It is not to stop hackers, look at the DS and the R4 carts.

2GB+ flash is so cheap now.
Flash media also has benefits of faster read speeds and lower battery consumption. It also would be a smaller device than a UMD drive.

Sony knew that it would be foolish to have games that required online to download. They had to choose between flash or Disc base.

I wholly approve. Also, no L2/R2, but I think the read touch screen will do even better than 2 extra triggers would have.

they are useing android based os on the psp2. google made android open source. meaning people can do what ever they want to and install it on any android or non android device. duh. do some research.

1) Android isn't licensed under GPL, it follows the Apache license. Sony's allowed to build a closed system with it. Nothing dodgy or illegal there.

2) Being based on open source software =/= lack of security. That's a fallacious way of thinking if you really take a look at the details.

Or rather, Sony isn't following itself. They are the only company to use disk based media on a portable device since its own MiniDisk players and the DVD Camcorders.

Flash Cards are nice because that means games can be big without any sort of size limitation.

Sony actually listened to the fans.

Looks like a PSP.

:D

But there's nothing wrong with that.

Ipods also tend to look like Ipods.

Those specs and solid state game media are the real sexy time, and thats what really counts.

Methinks Sony may have just peeped their heads out of their asses for a sec like groundhogs day.

Well i guess it proves Sony have zero imagination for design, after all they've gone through 3 consoles with an identical controller but i'm just being picky here. The main thing is they actually learned a lesson for once and stuck with physical media and happily not UMD. But creating decent hardware's always been the best part of Sony, it's the day to day running of Playstation they do a mediocre job at, so they need to make more effort to be competetive this time or get another failure.

Well I had also expected the PSP2 to look a little different, I actually kind of liked the improved Go looking thing we saw.

But as far as 3 consoles with the same controller, I suspect that may have something to do with the PS controller still being the best one on the market ever since its introduction!

Xbox controller were hideous when they first came out, then became less/smaller hideous. Gamecube was smart and just copied the PS design, (but in candy colors of course).

Thank god Sony didn't try to get smart ass and foist that batarang thing on us. That would have been a mistake.

Change to a damn near perfect thing just for arbitrary changes sake isn't just by its nature a good thing.

I suspect that has been one of the fatal design theories that has made such a mess out of FF these days.

I agree that the design could have been more attention grabbing, but I'm still a bigger fan of function over gimmickry.

# RE: RE: ...symbal 2011-01-27 16:20
The main problem is if you've got big hands the Playstation controller can feel small, cramped and sweaty, where the Xbox controller has evolved over 4 models and is a very good fit for me, so i always have to use a third party or Xbox controller converter whenever i play Ps1,2&3, and sony don't offer to sell any other options, because 1 of the reasons they won't change the controller is the silhouette of their pad is part of the Playstation brand image and they just don't want to change it.

# RE: RE: RE: ...But Fukir 2011-01-27 17:16
Damn, you've got some big fricken hands dude!

You need to make a youtube video of you trying to play a Go IMO.

It'll go viral.

Luckily for the hand,
uh... "endowed",
Pelican and the like make some pretty snazzy and beefier alternatives.

I've got a pretty cool pelican aftermarket for my ps2 thats bigger, rubberized, wireless, and has tilt.

Although the tilt ended being more trouble in actual use IMO.

And I also noticed that the PS controller has become an identifiable "image".

I suspect thats also what they're attempting to apply here.

They probably should have put a bit of chrome on it or something though to make it more obviously "next-gen".

# RE: RE: RE: RE: ...But Fukir 2011-01-27 17:21
Although back to my original point, most aftermarket alts that I've seen for any system are usually variations (bigger, smaller, more buttons, tilt...) of the PS design.

Other than personal choice factors like size, its just the most logical and smartest general shape/design of them all.

# RE: ...xnamkcor 2011-01-27 17:25
They actually changed their D-Pad drastically. Also, if isn't broken, why fix it? The DS2 works just fine. And you seem to be ignoring that the PS1 didn't start with the Dual Shock. And the DS2 added pressure sensitive buttons. And the DS3 added new L2/R2 triggers and Six-Axis. They have been slowly modifying it when necessary. If you want meaningless change, just for its own sake, fine, but Sony doesn't feel the need for that(at least in its controller).

Going retro with the cartridges again! Wasn't expecting Sony to pull such a brilliant move to save both money and space while coping with the anti-digital consumers. I'm impressed! Especially with the specs of the display, the sleek design, the new media, and the 2nd analog! Sony might actually destroy the 3DS, originally thought improbable! Kudos! 6+ years of giving pushes for a second analog finally got through to them.

There is a vast difference in what I assume you mean by "cartridges" and the flash media used in DS and NGP cards. Flash or Masked ROMs are hardly "old school"

# RE: RE: RE: Sony unveils next-gen PSP successor codenamed Ryugen 2011-01-28 01:38
Maybe if they start using punch cards... But yeah, he probably means old school as in they aren't trying to create something new like they did with the UMD, and they are trying to be more practical instead of innovative.

I'm basically saying instead og going all-out digital like the Go and the PSN, they're using a solid-state flashcart much like older systems used to use (smaller and more hi-tech of course) instead of using a disc. Discs are overrated and can be completely ruined should they take face-damage. Carts and cartridges only need their connections cleaned, you'd have to deliberately stab a knife or sharp object into the connectors to ruin it. That's what I mean by retro approach. I suppose I shouldn't have used "cartridge" as their is indeed a large difference between a NES "cartridge" and a DS flashcart. My bad.

this design looks clean and acceptable to returning psp fans such as myself. it seems to have some pointless features, such as the touch screen and back trackpads, but i guess well see where sony takes this. i too am happy about the return of physical media even if its not umd format. it would have been nice to be able to play my hot import nights on it, but thats what i have my psp 1000 for.
again, very clean looking, games sound amazing even if they are just rehashes, but overall looking forward to the release. will i be getting one? well see...

Love the NGP..... looks great. Only thing I would have liked was a flip-screen design (like the NDS) so that it protects the screen while being carried around instead of having to buy one. Then again, they probably want to differentiate themselves and sell accessories.

I also feel this is the obvious fault of the playstation pocket.

But its a trade off.

Although you may get nicks and scratches into the glass of a PSP, they are usually not very noticeable unless you unusually abuse them.

And anybody that abusive would pretty much trash anything!

The mechanics of a clamshell screen would fold under that much abusive just as quickly!

Nintendo makes up for that with a cheaper to manufacture system.

IE: cheaper to replace.
(Or: Apples and Oranges.)
