Sony tight-lipped on rumored PlayStation phone

As expected, Sony is keeping quiet regarding the newly resurrected PlayStation phone rumor.

Reports swirled around the interwebs yesterday suggest that a PlayStation-branded Android phone is in the works and could be released later this year. When asked about the rumor, a Sony spokesperson simply told game site CVG the usual "We do not comment on rumour and speculation" phrase.

While we wait for further confirmation around this newly resurrected rumor, hopefully next week's GamesCom event in Germany and the upcoming Tokyo Game Show in Japan will shed more light regarding the matter.

Actually, yeah. I mean if this is true and if it's successful that might mean that we'll get handheld console / phone hybrids as a standard in the future. Maybe even a 3DS redesign with phone features. And maybe a PSP2 with 2 different versions at launch. One with integrated phone features, some mobile internet access which, maybe, you can actually use for gaming, messenger functions and multimedia stuff, etc. All in one package and such and another one which is 'just' a handheld gaming device which is cheaper and stuff.

I probably won't be getting this most likely since I already have a PSP, though that also depends on the exact features and what the "phone" part is capable of and also on the design and price but if I'm looking at the big picture... hell yeah, of course I hope this is true!

I don't want a phone that plays games, I just want a kick ass handheld that doesn't have to split its performance up with anything else.

As long as it doesn't used ridiculous formats like Java and Brew, I'd be fine with a "gaming" phone existing, but you should keep in mind the most important part of a phone, is the phone. I don't what to see Nintendo, Sony, or Microsoft pull an Apple and release an ok gaming device with a crappy phone as a feature.

do you realize how big that would have to be? otherwise youd have pay for new ones and download them which would be expensive and would take up tons of memory on regular phone microsd cards.

if the rumor is true i dont think it would be that bad. If it is running android there are plenty of apps plus the option to create ur own apps,flash support for youtube and other websites, lots of customization and the playstation game support rather than gameloft and other games should be sweet

If Psp2 uses the same Psp/android mix they might at least make a small dent in Apple's market share, but that's a big IF because Sony has a recent history of either getting things completely wrong first time or being painfully slow to match the competition, i've been looking to switch to Android anyway except i've never liked the quality of SE phones.

This has been ask for so long, if they do make one and make no mistakes like the ps3 (Overpriced + plus the removal of features after release). also it needs to be with T-mobile please and does not require a data plan as well please. that would make this phone awesome

It will be an Android phone. If you getting it at a subsidized price, it will require a data plan like all other Android phones. If you buy it outright, you could get by with just using wi-fi.
