Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studio boss Shuhei Yoshida has some interesting comments on the current state of the PSP, even admiting that the handheld console is getting a bit old in today's standard. Speaking in an interview with GameIndustry, the Sony exec said:

“When we launched PSP it was the newest, biggest, brightest thing that we had – and after five or six years, and releasing many games, there’s no denying that people start to see that it’s getting a bit old."

He then went on to add: "But we’re always trying to expand the market – now our focus is on shifting to a younger audience and a more casual audience, and we’re making games for that audience.”

Mine too, even though it gets used as much as the wii I regret buying and they both are capable of playing pirate games. unlike the wii I have intimate feelings for my psp.

later on I think I'll even lick its analog stick... slowly to taste my dead skin cells.. mmmmmm

So announce PSP2 already like you should have done at TGS! It damn well better have things like 3D, PSN, trophies, in-game XMB, universal custom soundtracks, a camera, Full HD TV out, etc

;-) I agree PSP2 had better be what we have been asking for Touch screen's,Custom sound track's or the compatibility for in game music PSP2 trophies' etc.If they can pull it off this will sellout at the day of the launch of PSP2!!! But they need to keep it under $399!

Dang it, if it has a touch screen then all the games will be touch screen oriented, and if I wanted that I would have bought a DS not 2-3 psp's...

What. Are they going to aim towards children and casuals. Crap. This sucks. This is crappy. This is sucky. I cannot believe it. They are bad.

For doing this.

Look what launching shitty kid's titles did to the DS and the Wii. It made it an overall "kid's" system. Unlike the PSP which is much more of a mature system. There are wayyyy too many crappy games on those systems, that they could've made worth while games...they are bad for doing this sir.

But I still love the old girl. I've had more playtime out of my PSP than any of my next gen consoles. Admittedly most of that time has been spent on imports like Macross Ultimate Frontier and Gundam vs Gundam, but it's been a constant companion long after I got bored of the DS.

I have real worries that if the PSP2 is region locked, then I'll probably pass. I just don't trust Sony to get the best Western deveopers (or Japanese titles) on board in the West, especially given the incredibly poor marketing of the current console. The 3DS also looks pretty incredible, much tougher competition than the current DS imo.

"the psp is getting a bit old" are they on crack. look at ps2 a last gen console which Sony still produce games for and nobody complains about that. second thing why would you compare an 3ds against an psp that is kind of unfair despite 3ds is a newer console. thirdly they not going to release the psp2 till like what 2 or 3 years from now. ill give you a tip people stop believing secondary sources(rumors, that company believed to have the psp2) and believe primary sources ( actual word from Sony).

Yeah, well, relax. "getting old" is a relative saying when you compare what you can cramp in a device for your hands nowadays with what the PSP has.

It's fact that it can become so much better. And they will do just that with the PSP2. No need to jump cannons and be so defensive for no reason. :\

Besides... comparing is what a consumer have to do. Saying one shouldn't compare 3DS with PSP is outrageous. We have the right to compare and we will until the ends of time. :)

Although I would like to agree, I have to come at this with an objective opinion..You do say that the DS released 5 new models: DS Lite, DSi, DSi XL - I think you forget to realize that the PSP also made improvements with their revised handhelds: PSP 2000, PSP 3000, (well...) PSPGo. In theory the PSPGo would have been amazing, but the execution wasnt there.

All nintendo really has to do is release a mario game and they are probably going to make all the money back lost from the systems. The DS is much less powerful than the PSP right now, but the DS has 134 million copies sold, while the PSP is at 60 million.

Believe me I love my PSP over my DS by a lot, but to say that its going to kill 3DS is something i can't agree with. The craze with 3D technology is still insane right now (though i dont have much interest in it) that nintendo comes out and releases a system that DOESNT need glasses is ridiculous, and will definitely intrigue the mainstream population.

BUT, count on me to get a PSP2 when it becomes available (to hack..hahhha) but i have that soft spot for sony, a lot of my stuff is sony hahahah.

so what if it is old? as long as there are excellent games that keeps it alive it, will, not, die. :P There are still a whole lot more possibilities for the PSP, games waiting to be released, 3rd birthday, dissidia duodecim, FF agito XIII, monster hunter 3, god of war ghost of sparta and hopefully many more. PSP is still the best handheld gaming device for me.

The hardware itself is not old, whats old is the crappy software. What has Sony done since 1.0-6.0 Firmwires? A few decent updates, but nothing special. Well the PSP had its homebrew era, now its time for the PS3. Oh the possibilities! :D

Dude... don't be silly. Because of the hardware, there is only so much room to fit the firmware on there(flash0 =23.9 mb on a phat), so your logic kind of fails.

# Har har, douchebag.kupomogli 2010-09-21 19:57
So Sony copied Nintendo with the six axis and the Move.

How about you look towards the DSi? They added an SD Card drive, internet browser, mp3 player, movie file player, image viewer, camera(Sony had one first though it was an add on,) and DSiware. On the 3DS they're copying Sony by having one screen 16:9.

You could say all of that but the DSiware was to copy Sony. Nintendo might say they added the camera for games, but that's total bs. How many games utilize it?

Deny it all you like but the DSi was a blatant ripoff of many of Sony's features.

Meh, who cares if they rip nintendo off. Everything is ripped off of everything else, or every developer would have to start from scratch, and that would just suck... you use what works, and make that better.

The Psp was outdated a good 3 years ago, because put it up next to a Gamegear and what's really changed? Yeah it's got more power but it's rubbish as a music/video device, and the handheld world's moved on a lot with people expecting more ways to interface(touch screen, camera, mic, vibration etc.) and without homebrew i can guarantee i'd never bother to pick it up again.

If the PSP is old, what's the PS2? Those still get sold, for some reason that's beyond my thinking...SONY's gotta admit that because of hacking, the PSP's lasted a lot longer then it would have without.

uhh... the ps2 is also old. Just because People like the ps2, as it was innovative as heck in its time, doesn't make the psp brand spanken new. Not to mention most systems get hacked, and that doesn't really add to the system life, just a small fanbase.

it was an average shovelware console with no built in networking, and true to sony history they removed features over the course of the generation. even tho they saw fit to add networking with the slim, it was too little too late.

if sega wasn't it's own undoing... well the DC would have trounced the ps2.

i guess it was the first console with usb ports... woohoo?

why would they say PSP is old when it is finally topping sales charts now? they said they'd support it for ten years, but they didn't plan on having to deny PSP2's existence half that time. 3DS is coming out soon, and they're scared because of this stupid 3d market nowadays. By making this comment, it's obvious as hell how badly they want to just unveil the PSP2 now. They're going to kill the PSP earlier than they intented, you can count on it. Goodbye lame official updates, hello better homebrew!
