2. 3D gaming and the PlayStation Phone
3. Skype and manufacturing

We've read the specs, we've seen the demos, we've heard what people in the industry had to say about it. But one thing that Sony still hasn't revealed is the price tag on the Next Generation Portable. Kotaku follows up with Sony Worldwide Studios chief Shuhei Yoshida for answers.

ngp_shot2"We are not talking about price yet," Yoshida said. "but I hope that when we announce the price, people will say it makes sense."

When that time is, exactly, no one knows just yet. Yoshida did comment on the 3DS' US$ 250 price, which he thinks is, "pricier than what Nintendo typically launched their hardware for." Pricey, but he noted it was "pretty interesting" and that it feels like a more powerful DS.

Clearly, Yoshida's being very careful so as not to provide the slightest hint about the NGP price. But there are other things he was more willing to talk about.

with 3G and Wi-Fi, sony would probably keep skype from it, or charge for the service.

is it still too early to think about homebrew? :D

stfu with homebrew.

Everyone that uses homebrew, use it as an excuse because "it gives more liberty" and blabla, but the truth is that they're just playing pirated games on the system.

That's not what homebrew is about!

If Sony gave us an official outlet for homebrew, no one would be able to use it as a cover for piracy

Way to prove you know shit about what people really use the PSP for. We enjoy hacking our units and making them more open to more uses than just popping in UMDs or downloading PSN titles. Perhaps we'd enjoy playing Zelda on the road, or maybe we'd like to try our luck at creating our game we can share with others. It's not like anyone charges each other to download homebrew, it's a free and open community. Hell, you'd get pretty bored with a standard non-hacked PSP, most of us would anyways.

I didn't even consider the PSP something I wanted until I knew there was a surefire way to get CFW working on it.I bought a PSP-1000 New and a PSP-2000 used. I pre-ordered and bought my games New. I didn't end up with many games, but I'm not gonna buy games that I don't like. I'll probably buy a NGP new.

I agree with Zenshua91. The standard PSP is pretty lame. There's handful of decent titles on the system. As PS 3 started to grow Sony and other 3rd party developers began neglecting the little portable powerhouse. The fans realized the PSP's potential and started creating CFW's and homebrews. Without the brilliance of the PSP hackers Sony's handheld device would've tanked faster than the Ill-Fated Dreamcast (another awesome system that died before reaching it's full potential). If you don't know the difference between Homebrew and Pirated games you need to do your homework.

Who cares about the PS phone?

Phone people?

I'm thinking it may be best to smother that kid in the crib.

"but I hope that when we announce the price, people will say it makes sense."

Based on that, I'd say it's gonna be a little expensive. Possibly $350 or more.

NGP will be a brilliant device, I'll be definitely owning one, when it comes to the market.

Yeah, 3DS is a more powerful DS, that's all to it.

NGP is a total different story, which 3DS won't even be able to compete with it because it's much more powerful than 3DS, and the launch game titles are awesome!

Which about 3DS launch titles I found them rather boring.

I'll be expecting it to reach 300$ to 350$ at max.

Saying that he hopes that the announced price will "make sense" to me sounds like they're going to drum up as much hype as possible before dropping the bomb of $350-400 on the low end.

There's a lot of powerful as well as some excessive tech in this device, and given the launch cost of the PS3, I wouldn't expect it to be any less than $350.

Why would sony charge $350-400 for a portable?

The high initial pricing of the PS3 is the primary reason it took so long to be widely adopted.

Wrong.

This isn't Sony's first time to the rodeo!

They know the difference between a marketable price and not.

At 350$ for the device (many smart-phones are $300 without a contract) I'd definitely be getting it at launch. (Maybe 2 or 3 of them.)

Anything over $400 and I'd have to seriously think about it though.

That sounds like a good idea.

I'd buy one definitely, from what I saw in the Tokyo Press Conference NGP > Iphone > 3DS.

IMO 3DS has just jumped into psp level in hardware(graphi cs), while NGP went up by a lvls. To show MGS4 at it with that quality is impressive.
We do not need 3D on NGP, Wifi+3D would do, and I hope for bluetooth as well.

This is without doubt the successor of the psp

Seriously, why do you even start about comparing those two. All I see is the same story during the time DS & PSP were released. Nintendo did great trying out a new way of playing. Both of them were good and sold decent numbers, they aimed only aimed to diffrent audince. Nintendo made more Casual & Sony went more for hardcore.

3DS is not much better than a PS2 hardware.

So yeah, NGP is in a whole other level which 3DS can't even top, but it's NGP's rival so it'll have to do. :-)

So as NGP can play android games, what's stopping it running android apps like Skype?
Unless they only let it play Android games via Playstation Suite. But I think that's unlikely.

i think you would have to install the PS Suite on android phones so it can play those games. In essence PS-ing the android :-). I don't think the NGP plays android games. It plays the PS games that were on android via PS Suite. So they were originally PS games. not 100% sure though...

I think i'm gonna hold off buying a Ps phone because you just know if it does well someone will release other Android phones with proper analogs, and i never liked the quality of SE phones anyway.

Im under no illusions that this beast is gonna cost cause theres some serious tech under the hood, this is a gaming rig first and foremost, non gaming features are a bonus... I guess.
