Sony plans new PSP strategy

Sony is pledging to rejuvenate the PlayStation Portable platform, and with E3 2010 just around the corner, the company promises to "reinvent the whole PSP model in a very different way". According to SCE UK sales director Mark Howsen:

"I think in handheld over all the industry is at a bit of a tipping point. We’re seeing a trend whereby consumers are relatively accepting of the fact that they have to buy high-price hardware but at the same time they expect to pay very little, or sometimes even nothing at all, for software. That’s a real shift in behaviour."

"Of course there will always be a market for premium, full value product but the balance between that and value content is changing quite rapidly. That’s been fuelled by, I guess, piracy initially but now also the advent of new business models coming into this space and that’s feeding it even faster.”

"To reinvent the whole PSP model we need to look at handheld in a very different way, in the context in which consumers are now viewing it. We’re trying to reengage consumers with PSP, though that’s not just a challenge for us – it's a challenge for the whole handheld sector. We are at the point of a major shift in the way that consumers are engaging with the current players in that market.”

Rumors of a new PSP iteration has been making waves lately, with specualtions pointing at this months E3 for the big reveal.

I guess for all of this work, it's time for Sony to unveil the PSP 2 with consumers in mind ;-)

Nope. PSP2 is in development but it is HIGHLY unlikely that it will be shown during this years E3. If it does. You can call me an idiot. I hope I am wrong. I would very much like to see the PSP2

And you can call me an idiot too.

I think they are working to fix the PSP go concept and continue with the experimentation . eventually it will lead to solid product with PSP2.

Yes, I would like to hear about PSP2 in E3.

But if they do show off the concept to early.
Then it is just a rush move, the 3DS will cause them to rush and unveil a concept with far beyond realistic promises of what a real PSP2 would be.

Sony failed hard with the PSP. And unless they provide everything for free, its unlikely people will continue to use the device. Even if they did, only 20 or so people would still use the hardware that Sony royally failed with.

I think the PSP has proven itself to not be a failure. It is not without its flaws, but to be able to push ahead this long against Nintendo is nothing short of a win. Nintendo may have won overall with sales of software and hardware, but the PSP has shown that Nintendo does not have a 100% domination of the market and that there can still be contenders in the handheld market, which is far from something a failure could have done.

umd has to come back on the PSP2. period! consumers love to have a physical copy of their games to either keep or sale.

2nd, i highly doubt this will happen but the PSP2 needs to be priced at $200 or lower.

$250 for the PSPGo is a rip off because you cannot use your old umd games/movies and there is hardly anything valuable to download from PSN. there is always the percentage of people who do not have internet access to download their games. has sony been considerable of this sub-group? No.

if the PSP2 does not provide the needs from the consumers then the PSP platform as a whole will literally face a slow demise. gamer's needs do play a vital role in the equation of a game console.

There likely won't be a PSP2. I'm betting that there will be a PSP 4000 with new pricing plans and some new features (likely taken from the homebrew community).

of course they will take their ideas from the homebrew community.shoot over a yr ago i told people of a better ms support for their psps micro sdhcs with a pro duo adapter.now sony ripped off that idea to make m2.really expensive of course however, whereas my lil guide in pspmod forums state where you can get single adapters micro sdhcs and the dual cr3100 adapters that work the same or better than the m2,for free.sony steals from the homebrew community alot.thing is,do they understand it enough to know that we can always find a cheaper and easier way =P

All the psp community care about really is
vast variety of games (fps, rpg, mmorpg, platformers)
online support with mic suppor is mandatory
ten hours of gaming battery life
bluetooth support
everything else
like mp4 playback, mp3, inerne browser and crapp apps, we don care. They can add those little gimmicks just as long as they take care of our above needs!
The psp can do that stuff the ds cant. I love the ds and play it (currently) more, but me personally id wrather my psp do this stuff and NOT MY IPOD TOUCH!!!!
Spread the word
PSP THE WORLD!!!!!

Psp owners and pspgo, i got both.

On official firmware the PSP can do
online games and mic support to chat with other players.
There really needs to be more games like that.
More
first person shooters
RPG's
MMORPG's
Action/ Adventure
There should be just as many psp games as there are ninterndo DS games.

But i too would wrather do it all on my psp.

Also id like to add
if sony wants everyone to go digital, they should not charge full price. I would wrather things be %75 off retail store price, and then i would happily switch to digital.

Wot like $14.00 for Resistance Retribution. That sounds like a deal to me.

Sony could really take advantage of the handheld market if they opened the systems to fanmade programming.

Along with there massive marketing strategy, Apple's iphone and itouch are mainly popular because practically anyone can make programs and provide them on the appstore.
Android phones have also been gaining some mass appeal for there open platform that anyone can program for and run many homemade programs for free.

For the PSP, even with the new minis program, there is still an initial investment of $1000 for a Devkit. Opening the platform would obviously be a big plus for them, as many of us believe that the homebrew community helps push the PSP and we would love to see Sony embrace it.

These cheap little applications definitely have a huge impact on the handheld market and I bet its what Sony means by "a major shift in the way that consumers are engaging with the current players in that market.” That or possibly motion/touch screen controls, but thats really only great for those cheap little apps in my opinion, although the DS does have some innovative touch uses.

Whilst I am not about to ditch my PSPgo I still think Sony could release a low-price SDK (obviously different from the normal one, in that firmware flash cannot be touched, which is understandable and acceptable in my opinion) and let users create and upload their own programs/games (Jellycar legit in the PSN Store, anyone?)... then the iTunes Store vs PSN store arguments would be solved and sales numbers increased.

@Dudes:
The psp "community" cares about the ability to run homebrew on their psp, a large variety of "high quality" games, and all the general things you would expect from a portable media/gaming device, which includes long battery life and a decent internet browser.

I mean, the whole concept of the go is nice, but there is a lot that could have been done that wasn't. Its not asking for much and the go is already like 40 bucks more than a regular psp. Maybe TWO analog sticks and keep the damn umd drive. Seriously? What else does it have? 16gb card, big whoop. What if you don't have wireless internet? S-O-L i guess. But the concept of the sliding screen is nice. So all in all, if they kept the original umd drive and added another analog, then with a 16gb card and a kick-ass design, then i would consider buying this. But until then SONY, no such luck.

I was crossing my fingers while reading this article, hoping to see the words "Open" and "Platform" in the same sentience. I'm disappointed that we'll probably just be seeing more "high-price hardware" released at E3.

& the author spelled strategy wrong in the title.

I'm thinking sony is gonna take a step or leap in the wrong direction with a subscription service for limited unlimited play with micro transactions and pay downloadable content to fill the gap (their pockets) where normal games were before more minis more stripped down core games with the rest of the game as downloadable content.

# I 2nd that..sage3k 2010-06-01 07:24
I can see where you are going here... basically another $400 device from sony with some Online marketplace as a means to line their pockets with money and compete with established Markets like the Ipod/Pad in the process. The only way I would get a new PSP is if the console is completely backward compatible, has PS1 and 2 game playback and EVERYTHING that the concept fan designed PSP2 had. Not that it needs to be said.. but dual Nubs, some kind of rumble, Wi-fi, blue-tooth, and a few other things. I know none of this will happen but I just thought it would be a good thing to mention on the list of things SONY will never do.

Sony does not learn, I think that umdless smaller screened PSP was the major shift. Now it's time for the PSP2, stop killing a dead console to blame piracy because your mistakes. MAKE BETTER GAMES! SOFTWARE and stop with the hardware. GAMES, GAMES, MORE GAMES!!! New hardware isn't solving the lack of titles, how is this not inbreded in their tiny so called brains? :o :-x :zzz

Real shift in behavior? No! It's simply getting our money's worth! We pay more than we would for a next-gen console, and we get less! To hell with that! How about giving actual price cuts on hardware that cannot compete with the PS2!

i think that sony has been using piracy as the scapegoat in order to publicly deny the screw ups.

1. "a big game library" is the driving force" for console profiting. the NES was a lesser console than the genesis but it had a bigger game library (nintendo is still alive where sega isn't). the PS1 was a lesser console to the sega saturn and dreamcast but it also had a bigger library of games. the xbox 360 is a lesser to the PS3 but it has a bigger game library.

2. if the PSP2 doens't have a umd drive if it isn't price lower than $200 then it is a dead console.

Sony is heading down the exact same path that Sega followed.

The psp2 should have 2 analog sticks with l3 and r3 buttons they should put 2 shoulder buttons and the psp2 should be able to play games with ps2 quality...
this is where they will make money porting all the ps2 and ps1 library into downloadable form that work on the ps3 and psp2 to put them on our ps3 or psp2 we would pay between 5-20 bucks...

also a higher density umd drive for compatibility with existing umd and new umdBD discs.

Anyone who still thinks the umd should be dropped look at how bad the psp go failed and realize they made that pos for you...

Open source. tweak it to play Sony games. Low overhead on licensing and less on R&D. Add proprietary Sony Engine alongside open source SDK and you have a winner...and a phone...and a powerful game machine
