Sony has no plans of 3D for PSP

psp One of the biggest bombs in E3 2010 was the announcement of the 3DS, which has been making waves positively for Nintendo over the last couple of days. Sony, on the other hand, despite selling 3D TVs, 3D games, and upgrading their console for 3D capability, is not going to walk into handheld 3D territory just yet.

"No, no plans for that," said Scott Rohde, Sony Worldwide Studios VP, in an interview with IndustryGamers. "It’s just not something we’re announcing right now. It’s just as simple as that. It’s all I can tell you," he added when asked about the long-rumored PSP2. Kaz Hirai already gave his take on portable 3D, and without specifically mentioning the 3DS, the SCE chief was clearly unimpressed with the technology.

According to former Sony Europe boss David Reeves, however, Sony needs to release a new PSP and they'd better do it soon.

So you like it that Sony has over priced PSP games or DLC in the PSN store? That is pathetic! $39.99-$19.99 for a DLC game no Thank you! This is why Sony fails versus the Xbox 360 games in there store! or DLC its way cheaper then Sony! You would know if you had an Account with Xbox-360/Or Live! But why is the PSP games being over priced in the first place?..

Don't do it! I don't believe they'll enter the portable market yet, but to completely deny it seems pretty ignorant. They will most likely enter the market sooner or later, most likely when the portable consoles become even more like multimedia devices... smartphones.

I agree that ruling out MS's entry into portable gaming devices is premature. The portables have always outsold the home consoles. There's always been more gameboys out than there were playstations, and there's more DS's out than Wii's or 360's. Plus they're easier and cheaper to develop for, which, combined with the larger install base, equals greater profits.

MS's only major deterrent that I can see is having to break into the industry and go through the growing pains like they did with the original xbox (it was NEVER profitable, but it set the stage for the 360). Now that their games division is profitable with the 360 and they've somehow established a positive reputation among gamers (why people are so willing to forgive a system with 50% failure rate, I'll never understand), they would have a much easier time jumping into the portable gaming industry. ...... then again, they tried the ipod industry a few years back and that was a flop (I say ipod despite it being a brand name because it's a very different product from a standard mp3 player).

I'm really glad they are not going to add 3d. It's cool that Nintendo is doing it, but its not something that Sony should do and follow others. But that leaves me thinking about what amazing thing Sony could be working on if they are not going to go 3D and let Nintendo a big piece of the pie.

Just because one game uses cel-shaded graphics (or it might just be the art style of the game, I dunno) doesn't mean that the console isn't capable of running more graphically intensive games. I heard the 3DS has a Tegra in it. If it does, the PSP is pwned.

God of War: Chains of Olympus is graphically better than any DS game. Ghost of Sparta looks even better. Time will tell, but there is nothing on the 3DS that has showcased better graphics than the AAA PSP titles.

C'mon, i don't want to catch them all AGAIN. I want a story, i want character development, i want action!!

The problem here is that the DS sells games and portables to KIDS who don't know how to pirate consoles (and like kiddie stuff like pokemon and nintendogshit). But the PSP is aimed to people who, unfortunately, know how to pirate games and consoles.

THAT'S the reaseon why Chinatown Wars sold nothing. The few hardcore gamers who played it, pirated the game instead of buying it.

My sister (19) knows how to pirate her DS, and the only original game she has is Pokemon Soul Silver (she wanted the pokewalker).

Harcore = PSP
Kids/girls/Casual = DS

Sony really needs to release a new PSP. I've been through 2 already and they only look good for modding purposes now. I don't care if there's no graphic upgrade i just want my two nubs! And a different format of games like UMD is are slow and bulky to carry around.

First off, you're very wrong. They are cutscenes yes but there are 2 types. Prerendered and "live".

MGS3 and RE are both live cutscenes. Meaning they're rendered on the fly. Have you not seen what the DMP PICA200 GPU can do? I guess not considering you think the 3DS cutscenes were prerendered. Its capable of self-shadowing, soft-shadows, true bloom and HDR lighting... things the PSP can't do. It's also capable of 4xAA, though it's not needed since 3D images have a method of AAing themselves therefore freeing up more video Ram for better images.

So you're actually very wrong. The 3DS blows the PSP out of the water, all we've seen so far are tech demos of a device that hasn't even got a release date. A device that displays a full 3D image.

No matter which way you look at it the PSP sucks compared.

The 3DS uses Parallax Border technology so you don't need 3D glasses for 3D. It isn't possible (yet) to get this tech on big TVs so it's limited to portables... Sony could use it too. But they don't want to make a brilliant console it seems.

It wouldn't mean less image quality at all. Where are you getting your information from? The 3D effect simply requires a type of image blit to separate the layers. Our studio are looking into migrating to the 3DS now. The PSP's a dead duck.

Regardless of image quality, 3D looks outstanding on the 3DS. It's literally the best thing in gaming. Standardised 3D on a console... that's a game changer. You can deny it all you want. All that will do is make me bookmark this page and in 2 years time I'll show you how wrong you were.

To be quite honest I think the PSP is a fine handheld. It just needs better support for games.

I know 3D will be the next big thing but for portable gaming I just don't see it being that big a hit.

I can't knock Nintendo though as without them the original PlayStation would never have been born. Their stupidity bought us a great new level of gaming.

Well that's a shame. What I saw of the 3DS at E3 was nothing short of amazing. If Sony don't step up they're going to be sitting in last place again. It's as good as cinema 3D... just portable and without glasses. It's a lot brighter too. Perfect really. I can't wait to own one of these things, I've also never seen so many launch titles that I want!

Come on Sony. Keep up.

I'm playing the PSP waaay more than my DS at the moment too so it's not like I'm a Nintendo fanboy. The 3DS is just outstanding tech and to see that Kojima is making a MGS launch title for it... is that not telling the "haters" how mindblowingly brilliant this machine will be?

The Playstation 2 has one of the largest libraries of games among all consoles, hopefully the next iteration of sony's handheld will have playback of these titles. They would make a ton of money this way, and hopefully increase development support for better games.

I would expect a newer system to outperform a 6 year old system :S Thats like when people said Dreamcast was way better than a PS1 because of better graphics and look what happened to the Dreamcast. At the end of the day PSP is old, you should be looking at the Iphone for competition as thats actually new.
