Sega Genesis Collection - Image 4

Last month, we posted one of the best possible piece of news for PSP fans - the announcement of the upcoming Sega Genesis Collection which includes:
  • Alex Kidd - The Enchanted Castle
  • Altered Beast
  • Bonanza Bros
  • Columns
  • Comix Zone
  • Decap Attack
  • Ecco the Dolphin
  • Ecco: The Tides of Time
  • Ecco Jr.
  • Eternal Champions
  • Flicky
  • Gain Ground
  • Golden Axe I, II and III
  • Phantasy Star II, III and IV
  • Ristar
  • Shadow Dancer: Secret of Shinobi
  • Shinobi III
  • Sonic The Hedgehog 1 and 2
  • Super Thunderblade
  • Sword of Vermillion
  • Vectorman 1 and 2
  • Virtua Fighter 2
If you were born late and none of these titles sound familiar, here's a short history lesson: Sega Genesis (also known as Sega Mega Drive) was a 16-bit video game console first released in Japan in 1988, which was then also released to the rest of the world later. Sega Genesis was meant to compete with Super Nintendo.

The Sega Genesis Collection is a compilation of classic Genesis games from 15 years ago and the titles included in the package are considered as milestones in the earlier chapter of the gaming industry. It's the closest thing to turning your PSP into a virtual time machine! The Sega Genesis Collection is set for release this Fall.

Haa haa i have all these games on dgen.

But good one for sega for their choices of games.

They nearly choose the perfection assemblem.

It's only missing the streets of rage + shining force games.

» DGEN 1.70

I think I'll download the games on the list I don't have yet. Then I'll have no reason at all to waste my money on this UMD game.

by NortonComm - 2006-09-06 00:08
» dgen

I recently played the original ghosts and ghouls thanks to dgen. There is almost no difference(well , ok the graphics is a bit more advance) between that game and a recently published Ultimate ghoust and ghouls.

» a short list...

and I'd have to ask the same question, WHERE THE F**** is streets of rage, that was one of the best ones. You can't tell me they can't put anymore roms on there than that !! Not when I can EASILY fit @ 50 on my memory stick PLUS an emulator to run em . And they want us to PAY for them?? Truth be known , I could PROBABLY go out and buy ALL those games for about half the price of what the game's gonna cost I think Sony would do better to just sell and emulator online ( WITHOUT AN UPDATE !!) and then sell the roms for maybe 45 cents each. That sounds fair to me, anyway.

» haha

seeing as everyone else is complaining i'd just alwell!!!

COMPLAIN!!!>>> where is streets of rage!!!

by prime - 2006-09-06 01:54
» like the Dreamcast collection

With any luck, our clever scene may find a way to rip the emulator out of this, which may be more advanced than DGen (most likely). Although DGEN 1.7 plays most games at 50fps with a frameskip of 0!

» Nice one

You guys are hardly doing the homebrew scene any favours. "Why pay money to buy these games when I can illegally download them and play them on an emulator for free?"

And then people wonder why Sony clamps down on homebrew so much?

The reason that the number of games is limited, is that in order to release the pack commercially, Sega will have to throughly test each game to ensure there are no emulation issues. Emulation glitches may be acceptable when you are downloading romz to your emulator, but Joe Public will complain if a commercially released retro collection doesn't work correctly.

I'm guessing that some of the bigger games that are missing are being held back in case a sequel is produced. Quite often when retro collections are produced all the good games are released on volume 1 leaving volume 2 as a collection of second-rate games. I'm guessing that they are planning ahead by leaving some well-regarded games off this collection.

Exactly...where is streets of rage???

Comix Zone - NOT A CLASSIC

Flicky - DEFINITELY NOT A CLASSIC

Gain Ground - NOT A CLASSIC

Ristar - NOT A CLASSIC

Super Thunderblade - NOT A CLASSIC

Virtua Fighter 2 - NOT A CLASSIC

Although they were fun for a bit...they definitely do NOT deserve to be added.

These games could have easily been replaced with REAL classics like Streets of Rage, Revenge of Shinobi, General Chaos, and Gunstar Heroes. SEGA...no wonder you don't make consoles anymore...sheesh.

This is gonna sell as well as the UMD movies. Everyone who would want to play these games already has them on Dgen. I know i do.

Erm, you know that I paid good money for them maybe a decade or so ago... Screw this with their cheap tactic of making money!

ps - I could have made them screenshots on an emulator easily!

by chameleon_789 - 2006-09-06 02:59
» Too late

the only people who would buy this are people who upgraded to 2.8 and thought there was no chance of homebrew or a downgrader... but there is now :S This would have got waaaay more sales if it was released a month ago.

Since I'm already playing these games as ROMs, it'll be perfectly ok for me to play this UMD as an ISO ^_^

» Best Games Missing

I'm Missing Streets of Rage & Revenge Of Shinobi.

And even if they're not from Sony, I would like to see Another World (Out of this World) and Flashback in a Compilation...

"Comix Zone - NOT A CLASSIC

Super Thunderblade - NOT A CLASSIC

Virtua Fighter 2 - NOT A CLASSIC"

Well, those three are not classics but are (were) pretty class titles and I wasted hours on them.

I mean, everyone knows that Emulators are better and you can have all those games plus many many more. But those games on there are sweet, I can't believe Gain Ground is on there.

I'm still getting this because DGEN still doesn't play games at fullspeed. besides, since the games are old the ISO shouldn't be that big.

"Sega Genesis was meant to compete with Super Nintendo. "

how old are you man?? you realy don't know about videogames...

Sega Genesis was released years before the Super Nintendo, The Super Nintendo was meant to compete with The Sega Genesis!!

» STREETS OF RAGE ...

Im glad streets of rage is mentioned so much because its so damn funky . streets of rage one with the police car that pulls up and sends rockets down , all the sprites onscreen and unlike final fight or all the arcade conversions which just kill u as soon as they can to get you to put more money in , making it absolutely no fun at all, streets of rage took ACTUAL skill to turn at the right time, do the right moves etc etc. thats what makes this game an unsurpassed classic only beaten by the bigger and better streets of rage 2 which was better in every single way except 1 : no police car pulling up to launch rocket fire on the enemies while they dance left and right and then bounce of the floor , flickering before they die. I'm malcom X

by CombusT - 2006-09-06 07:01
» EMULATED

this is obviously run on an emulator, sad they didnt take the time to stretch it to full psp proportion and redo a bit of the graphics instead of just emulating them, i gaurantee if you extract the iso of this, it is under 80 mb and will have a ton of roms in it

by drmadcow - 2006-09-06 07:10
» Genesis Collection VOL2 haha

*11 - "Emulation glitches may be acceptable when you are downloading romz to your emulator, but Joe Public will complain if a commercially released retro collection doesn't work correctly."

^This ain't right you ever played midway classics? The mortal kombat games on them were missing sounds, you couldnt get reptile in part1,etc.

They left games like Streets of Rage, Sonic 3, etc PURPOSELY so if this UMD game sells they'll put a "Volume 2" out and sell it as that.

This UMD's for sale for little kids who heard their friends say they can play snes, genesis,et c on their psp's at school and think if they buy this it'll be like the same... lol

Anyways most people gotta choice on this one, shell out $50 for games you might of already paid for 20 years ago for the same price then wait a year for volume 2 and spend another $50 or download them all for free right now.... hahahaha

by Mr. Common Sense - 2006-09-06 07:28
» virtua fighter 2?

I bet virtua fighter 2 sucks on genesis.

by Spudgun - 2006-09-06 08:00
» Original idea...

Sony do you really think us 1.5 owners are gonna upgrade for this... you might get away with something like this as a free-bee UMD, but dont ask for my hard cash for this... PLEASE!!!

» Little fix

"Sega Genesis was meant to compete with Super Nintendo."

Megadrive is older than Super Nintendo. The correct is "Super Nintendo was meant to compete with Megadrive".

I find it very dissapointing that there is no Streets of Rage II and III. Come on Sega!

And for the record:

SoR>Final Fight

Hands down.

"Comix Zone - NOT A CLASSIC

Super Thunderblade - NOT A CLASSIC

Virtua Fighter 2 - NOT A CLASSIC"

Well, those three are not classics but are (were) pretty class titles and I wasted hours on them."

I understand your point, and I'm not looking at a fight. My reasons are this...comix zone was a bit laggy on the controls which made it rather annoying (to me at least) to play... Super Thunderblade...that was my mistake. That was a great title. As for Virtua Fighter 2 on the genesis...it lagged a lot and had a ton of glitches. The saturn/psx version was definitely great, however, back in our old days, when a game was a hit, it got ported to almost every darn system...sega messed this one up though. It was good on the 32x however...not the genesis. That 2d style didn't cut it at all.

That was my reasoning for that.

I like Comix Zone, I don't care what any of you think.
