Rumor: PSPs with non-downgradable firmware on its way to the stores? |
Ó
Would you buy a PSP armed with a security feature that makes it hack proof? According to Nadclovek from PSP-Spot (sourcing an EB Games Regional Manager in Calgary, Canada), new shipments of PlayStation Portables may sport higher firmware (4.xx) and retail at 169.99 CAD or around US$ 153.67. This might not be good for PSP sales to say the least.
Nadclovek says:
Sony was sending out Emails to its Commercial Retailers that all new PSPs to be sent out will have 'Downgradable Prevention' built right into them. All new PSPs to be shipped out as of next week Friday, May 18th, will be a higher firmware, 4.xx (specifics were not released), but they were promised to include new security features to prevent hacks and downgrades. Apparently this is one of their first steps to start focusing on the PSP again, instead of diverting all attention to the PS3.
The report also mentions that it might have implications in North American PSP sales. While we doubt that it'll be the end of PSP hacking as we know it, but it's a sobering thought to say the least. For now though, we're still sticking this in the rumor bin until further notice. Stay tuned.

I don't see how this email report should cause us any more trepidation. Our beloved hackers probably see this as another exciting challenge, designed simply for their cracking pleasure. So to Sony, I simply say "meh", to our hackers I bid good luck, and to my fellow gamers, I say don't panic, just be patient.

As for the rest simply go to some backwater store that doesn't sell a lot of units and pick up your 2.60 FW PSP.

Sony, let the grudge go, yes, devs made several awesome breakthroughs that threw Sony to the ground, but whether you know it or not it's HELPING sales of your PSP console. Only reason I bought mine was because I could also downgrade it to play homebrews and stuff, and that's the only reason my sis bought one as well... So stop and think a minute Sony. This very bad move will kill your console IF our devs can't beat it again, and if they can, you'll be lucky.

First you're bringing down the Lik-Sang community, for some stupid ass power adapter sh*t...
Now you're bringing down the homebrew scene as well??
It's time you stop hating the homebrew scene and just make some friends out here....!
You will sell more PSP's then you will ever have...

But it doesnt really matter anyway, where ever there is a game system the is always a hacker to make it better. the 360 was hacked on the first week of relaunch, even tho microsoft said that it was "hack proof"
This wont be "Non- downgradable" either

But yeah seriously... this is no different from any other new firmware version. i remember back in the day when 1.0 and 1.5 was all there was, and we were terrified that 1.52 would never be cracked.

And the homebrew scene sure is nice but the best games are still delivered by sony. As soon as we can download PSX games from any pc. A 4.xx firmware isn't bad at all.
Why we should pay for their games? Because we want a psp2. Just think about the homebrew possibilities if somebody hacked it!

i got a 1.50FW there and upped it to 3.03OE-C and i'm doing just fine right now
Does anything other than LocationFree and PS1 even need that high, aren't games still only requiring 2.80 at the highest (ie. Port Ops)?
By the time a game comes out for a 4.xxFW, it'll be hack by then, but until that happens, who really cares?!

Sony claim that they are not afraid of homebrew apps but are concerned with piracy. It's true that this is a major problem but then, couldn't sony just find a way to disable piracy on the psp and still enable HEN???
Another thing is that hackers like Noobz, Team C+D, Dark Alex; they claim that it is our decision to do with what we want. They just come to provide us with the true potential of the PSP. It is all based on business ethics.
"I think it is up to users to make the correct decisions about how to use my software"
Dark Alex
Anyhow, my point is.. Sony should be thinking of ways to work together with the PSP Hackers then to go against them. Trust me, doing this will raise PSP sales. Unfortunely, they only care about their profits rather then consumer's opinions.. unlike other companies.

WHAT! YOU GOT TO BE KIDDING ME! BAHAHAHAHAHA. And you guys trust THAT? I could say that I'm the son of the co-ceo of sony and tell you that there's a ps4 comming next month and you idiots would still belive me.. come on.

i can pretty well assure you its costs $100+ to make while the games cost liek $1 probably (think of a cd and a plastic cd case)and games cost 20-50 bucks so they make 50 bucks on the consol and 20-50 bucks for each game...

But yeah. Just what could Sony hope to do to make such a thing? Sounds like just another pointless scare tactic to me. Essentially "You've pushed us to do this".
The only good thing about the PSP is the ability to put homebrew stuff on there. If anything, they're hurting themselves by doing this.
And of course, that's all setting aside that no matter how well-protected anything is, if it runs, it can be cracked. It's a simple fact that's been proven time and again, and not just with the PSP. Perhaps Sony should acknowledge that fact first and foremost before anything else.

"oh em gee sony you suck my nuztz! you should give up the fight! you can't winz! unhackable dubba tee eff! so was gay ta-082!!"
We don't need ANYONE to come on here and start spouting all of that bull. Anon was the only one who said anything remotely intelligent. The only reason sony is doing this is to try to reassure third party devs and to keep them making games. If they thought that all of their games would be pirated the day after they were released, why would they make them? They would lose millions.
Unless you have something intelligent to say, and not about how much Sony sucks and how they should just let hackers do whatever they want, don't post here.
(And no, I am not a hack-hater. In fact, I love my 3.40 OE-A CFW PSP and all of the homebrew games and apps on it, and I don't want Dark_AleX or the Noobz team or anyone to stop what they're doing.)

LOL just kidding. But seriously who the hell gives a damm about Pokemon. It's the same thing over and over again. They just add a 100 more Pokemons and a couple more minor improvements and that's it. Why even bring Pokemon into this. We are talking about the PSP here if we want to talk about kiddy games we'll go over to the DS section.

Assuming there will be something to exploit in that firmware version to run unsigned code.
Besides, even if they can't hack it firmware wise isn't that what a freaking mod chip is for? Geez, all this fuss from everyone.

SONY if u want uz to like u den u hav to let homebrew free not be like u giving evrithing to Ps3 n forget bout PSP
Reply

But yeah. Would I buy one of these PSPs? Sure, as long as I have the money. The first one I ever bought is horribly broken, and I'd be interested to see if swapping the motherboard from it with a new one would do anything. That is, assuming they don't change the design, but there aren't many details to go on.
And to the guy above this post (the "dude dis is *****" one), they're not forgetting about the PSP. That's one of the main reasons they're doing this (assuming the rumor is true, of course). There's still quite a bit riding on the PSP, and a minor setback such as their latest firmware getting cracked is *not* going to stop them.
Props to Sony though. They're putting up a good fight :3

approximatily only 20% of all PSP AT ALL know about homebrew and the numbers are even lower when you only count people who CAN use homebrew....

- You can use the newest Custom Firmware(3.40)
- You have all "new" functions of 3.40
- you can customize your PSP
- 3.40 is very stable, also the bug with the random writing to the flash is fixed.
Even Dark_AleX recommend to use 3.40 OE-A

IMO
2.71 SE was a big breakthrough for custom firmwares... then its 3.03OE-C...anything above that is just for newer games and maybe for ppl who wish to have the latest CFW
it would be best to let dark_alex create one big uber useful CFW than have him create little steps

you can change a 1 to a 0 and a 0 to a 1. Its just a matter of finding the right ones to change

because we all know sony cant say ***** about being "unhackable", and we all know that when this unhackable firmware gets hacked, we will eventually have a kick ass custom firmware. (of course given sony's track record, I don't expect any new features or anything, just some more challenging code to crack, so maybe it wont be any more kick assed than 3.40OEA)
good luck to the hackers!, though I don't think you'll need it.
