Rumor: PSPs with non-downgradable firmware on its way to the stores?

Sony PlayStation Portable - Image 1Would you buy a PSP armed with a security feature that makes it hack proof?

According to Nadclovek from PSP-Spot (sourcing an EB Games Regional Manager in Calgary, Canada), new shipments of PlayStation Portables may sport higher firmware (4.xx) and retail at 169.99 CAD or around US$ 153.67. This might not be good for PSP sales to say the least.

Nadclovek says:

Sony was sending out Emails to its Commercial Retailers that all new PSPs to be sent out will have 'Downgradable Prevention' built right into them. All new PSPs to be shipped out as of next week Friday, May 18th, will be a higher firmware, 4.xx (specifics were not released), but they were promised to include new security features to prevent hacks and downgrades. Apparently this is one of their first steps to start focusing on the PSP again, instead of diverting all attention to the PS3.

The report also mentions that it might have implications in North American PSP sales. While we doubt that it'll be the end of PSP hacking as we know it, but it's a sobering thought to say the least. For now though, we're still sticking this in the rumor bin until further notice. Stay tuned.

» So what's new?

How is this anything new? I think we could all agree that every new firmware has had "downgradable prevention" built in. I mean, it's not like they ever released a firmware that gave you the option of downgrading to an earlier one. When units started shipping with 3.XX firmware, I'm sure Sony felt they were including "downgradable prevention," but we all have seen what happened there.

I don't see how this email report should cause us any more trepidation. Our beloved hackers probably see this as another exciting challenge, designed simply for their cracking pleasure. So to Sony, I simply say "meh", to our hackers I bid good luck, and to my fellow gamers, I say don't panic, just be patient.

» Riiiight....

That's what they said with nearly every firmware version past 1.5, but they especially said it with 2.0, 2.01. Every version past that were considered "un-downgradeable". I hope that WHEN (not if) we hack their so called "downgradeable prevention" PSP units, they see that they've lost and have been and finally give up the fight.

» Bull*****.

There's no such thing as unhackable software. I give up to 2 weeks for hackers until they'll crack it. Then, DAX will make a OE/SE/UE/EE/xE/whatever custom firmware, and it will be the same way as in 3.00 fw.

Wow if they do that it's gonna SUCK for sales. like 70% of what makes the PSP is the homebrew hacks and all, because it brings out WAY more of the PSP's potential that Sony won't allow us to see for whatever reason.

Sony, let the grudge go, yes, devs made several awesome breakthroughs that threw Sony to the ground, but whether you know it or not it's HELPING sales of your PSP console. Only reason I bought mine was because I could also downgrade it to play homebrews and stuff, and that's the only reason my sis bought one as well... So stop and think a minute Sony. This very bad move will kill your console IF our devs can't beat it again, and if they can, you'll be lucky.

there better be a good reason besides this that anyone would want this instead of an oe firmware. I am tired of sony just removing features but not giving us much in return. And what ever happened to watching movies on the PSPs. Why don't you guys let us do more of that?

by coolguy5678 - 2007-05-09 02:53
» Not quite...

There is definitely such thing as unhackable software (eg. Hello World) - just, with something so big as the PSP's firmware, it's really really hard to do it.

by Mr. D - 2007-05-09 03:00
» Sony needs to rethink their marketing.

Really, the Sony products are selling so well because of the possibilities you get when you hack them. The only thing is, the guys responsible for marketing (and possibly ken kutaragi) haven't noticed it yet. And still, TA-086 was considered un-downgradeable to firmwares less than 2.5. So this new mobo will probably get hacked in no time. Those Sony dudes must have really big balls to risk their sales like that.

Eventually they will stop. the psp's FLASH memory is limited in size so.....and IF this new firmware has more security to prevent hacking, then that means ole dark alex will just have to UP his time and skill lol. either we will crack it to be downgradable, or we will ENABLE our homebrew to work with that specific firmware. no issue. in order to KEEP on fighting the hacking community, they will HAVE to either release a new psp model that holds more flash memory space, OR, they will have to keep making updates, that not only ADD security, but REMOVE features just to save space. they had mentioned this before.....said they might have to yank out the psp's ability to play MP3's and replace it with security shlt lol....PSP + Awesome System, Sony + Shlty Company. i can show you over 80 or so games that ROCK on psp. [to you who say psp is only good for homebrew]

» Blargh

YARR! Sony is ANGRY! I bet the "preventable downgrade" function in their next PSP will be.... a non-upgradable FW ROM! Seriously. That's the ONLY way that's 100% foolproof. But even then, hacks can be found and HB can load from RAM.

So then I wonder, will there be the regular PSPs and then a more "secure" PSP edition?

But it doesnt really matter anyway, where ever there is a game system the is always a hacker to make it better. the 360 was hacked on the first week of relaunch, even tho microsoft said that it was "hack proof"

This wont be "Non- downgradable" either

by you guys - 2007-05-09 03:42
» it's not going to reduce their sales at all

people who use homebrew/hacking are a small minority of game players. there will still be tons of people who will go out and buy psp's after this, and play retail games, not even knowing about the homebrew scene. it will probably increase their sales, due to a price drop. $153 is pretty cheap for such a nice system.

But yeah seriously... this is no different from any other new firmware version. i remember back in the day when 1.0 and 1.5 was all there was, and we were terrified that 1.52 would never be cracked.

» justa question

why would sony email retailers with specifics on the new models about how they cant be downgraded? how would this information be beneficiary to them??

by Solidus - 2007-05-09 05:10
» Answer

The answer is pretty simple. To warn them. They are starting to catch on via reports and other information that people are downgrading their units and if successfull rely on the store's return policy to simply get another one with no reprocussions. Now SONY is telling them about their newer models so that they are informed about how secure it is and that if it gets returned it's probably not from a brick as it wont be that mainstream to say its been hacked and bricked. Now when we figure out how to downgrade/hack the damn thing sony will then call them again and tell them it's been hacked and warn them about it. Of course it is still up to your store's disgretion whether or not to take the unit back. (WALMART will but only for 90 days after date of purchase with reciept.) Without your reciept you can just lie about when you got it and take your chances.

Anyway I hope this clears things up a little bit. If my message appears incoherant. It's probably cause I havn't been to sleep in over 48 hours.....

by Kwastie - 2007-05-09 05:25

Sony claim that they are not afraid of homebrew apps but are concerned with piracy. It's true that this is a major problem but then, couldn't sony just find a way to disable piracy on the psp and still enable HEN???

Another thing is that hackers like Noobz, Team C+D, Dark Alex; they claim that it is our decision to do with what we want. They just come to provide us with the true potential of the PSP. It is all based on business ethics.

"I think it is up to users to make the correct decisions about how to use my software"

Dark Alex

Anyhow, my point is.. Sony should be thinking of ways to work together with the PSP Hackers then to go against them. Trust me, doing this will raise PSP sales. Unfortunely, they only care about their profits rather then consumer's opinions.. unlike other companies.

They are trying to encourage companies to produce games for their system. With all the system sellers coming out (GoW, Final Fantasy Series, and GT), they have to get some help from third party sellers to help ride that wave, by making good selling games. i can pretty well assure you its costs $100+ to make while the games cost liek $1 probably (think of a cd and a plastic cd case)and games cost 20-50 bucks so they make 50 bucks on the consol and 20-50 bucks for each game...

i cant stand people who would download like full psp or ps1 games to put on there psp but with emulators like nesterj those are exeptible in my opinion since they dont make them anymore and even if they did theyd gain little profit

Downgradable Proof? Why not just say "Downgrade-proof" works a lot better.

But yeah. Just what could Sony hope to do to make such a thing? Sounds like just another pointless scare tactic to me. Essentially "You've pushed us to do this".

The only good thing about the PSP is the ability to put homebrew stuff on there. If anything, they're hurting themselves by doing this.

And of course, that's all setting aside that no matter how well-protected anything is, if it runs, it can be cracked. It's a simple fact that's been proven time and again, and not just with the PSP. Perhaps Sony should acknowledge that fact first and foremost before anything else.

"oh em gee sony you suck my nuztz! you should give up the fight! you can't winz! unhackable dubba tee eff! so was gay ta-082!!"

We don't need ANYONE to come on here and start spouting all of that bull. Anon was the only one who said anything remotely intelligent. The only reason sony is doing this is to try to reassure third party devs and to keep them making games. If they thought that all of their games would be pirated the day after they were released, why would they make them? They would lose millions.

Unless you have something intelligent to say, and not about how much Sony sucks and how they should just let hackers do whatever they want, don't post here.

(And no, I am not a hack-hater. In fact, I love my 3.40 OE-A CFW PSP and all of the homebrew games and apps on it, and I don't want Dark_AleX or the Noobz team or anyone to stop what they're doing.)

funny when you talk about sony losing sales when all you people using hacked psps download the games for free. i know at least 6 people at work alone that have hacked psps and hard drives filled with every single game that has come out on the system. they get them the second the iso appears online and never spend a penny on the system besides the initial purchase. i really hope they do finally get this thing hack proof. would be nice coming here and seeing it a ghost town.

The amount of people attempting to direct their comments at Sony in this "thread" is amazing. The day one of their higher-ups actually does... well, it won't happen.

But yeah. Would I buy one of these PSPs? Sure, as long as I have the money. The first one I ever bought is horribly broken, and I'd be interested to see if swapping the motherboard from it with a new one would do anything. That is, assuming they don't change the design, but there aren't many details to go on.

And to the guy above this post (the "dude dis is *****" one), they're not forgetting about the PSP. That's one of the main reasons they're doing this (assuming the rumor is true, of course). There's still quite a bit riding on the PSP, and a minor setback such as their latest firmware getting cracked is *not* going to stop them.

Props to Sony though. They're putting up a good fight :3

"try to hack it, and you'll bricked it" they were saying loll okay true.. its because of GTA but a downgrader was still made and kernal acces was found.. what Sony didnt expected to happened, did happened July 1st of last yr with a 2.50-2.60 downgrader and then with a 2.71 and 3.03 downgrader.. so yeah its possible! ;)
