It's been a long time coming, but if the new rumors are true, Sony may be finally dropping the price tag of PSP Go by as much as US$ 50 in the US, just in time for the holidays.

According to an anonymous tipster working in the Army and Air Force Exchange Service based store, the download-only handheld will see a price drop to US$ 200 starting this Friday, in order to boost its sluggish sales.

When contacted by Joystiq, Sony refused to comment on the rumor, not even offering a "We don't comment on rumor and speculation" thing.

even that's not enough to save the GO. Perhaps they should just make them the same price if they want to get rid of all the units they made.

That's just what I was thinking! Of course Sony will think that this price drop will be responsible for the future boom of Go sales when in reality it's due to TN's godly project x_x

yes, but when they think the price drop is the reason and not the exploit, hopefullt they will learn and then the psp2 will be low priced too.... seems like niether nintendo nor sony can compete with Apple's ipod touch... so what if they dont have real games, most of the people at my school (normal big city school) dont even know what the fuck a psp is and they have ipods....so they dont understand the different between the game quality comparing psps, ds's, and ipods... they think: "a game is a game"....proof is, apple has tons more sales... they should learn from the mastas...even the new ipod touch has camera.... meh, ds has one.... but psp sjure as hell dont.... weee text wall...

uhummm... ya, well hopefully you get my point..... the nintendo and sony devices need to be $225 or less to compete with apple to get the MOST sales... not saying that they wont get alot, just that apple with have more more more..

Unfortunately those iTouches are extremely versatile, probably more-so than the PSP is, so even if you keep a genuine iTouch, it's still cheap, affordable, and fun to play around with. The problem the DS and PSP face when competing with a game-playing MP3 player is that Apple makes shiny new things seem important in life while the DS and PSP aren't all that common/necessary for most people to have. iPods grew as the ideal MP3 player, then it grew into the ideal portable media player with video playback and photo/video capturing. Now with the introduction of the iPhone as well as the other features of an iTouch, Apple can expand on the iPod's success and puch it into cheap gaming. Unfortunately, people are brainwashed by the iPod reputation and get sucked in, while the DS and PSP are the real gaming devices.

Another issue is that the DS and the PSP aren't nearly as portable or slim as a wallet-sized iTouch, so it's much more pleasing to carry around than a brick weighing down your pocket. Sure, that brick happens to be a real gaming device, but it's no iPod.

Unfortunately the DS steered after entirely from the success of the GameBoy franchise, so it doesn't have all that much respect, neither does the PSP (though it was considering to be gold if you had one when they first came out). The iPod has a massive reputation and success rate behind it, so Jobbs is only adding more and more and building on the already-monumental features of the little gadget. If the PSP or DS can size down and focus on what people use extensively on a daily basis (such as music playback and videos, hell texting alone would be a huge plus), then there should be no problem for them in the market, but unfortunately the portable gaming scene has veered from quality gaming to "it does it all!" :/

agreed.

A top quality portable gaming console shouldn't be cluttered with other functions IMO except as secondary attributes.

To compete with an itouch or blackberry in testing, ebooks, mp3's, etc would require an interface more centric to those functions.

A wide touchscreen and possibly a mini keyboard.

Then in order to also have a proper gaming interface you'd have to add the trigger buttons and sticks/pads somewhere, which makes the device bigger, which makes it a less desirable alternative for those other functions then the itouch that was made for them.

Its really apples and oranges.

To make the device better for other functions you make it a weaker gaming device.

To make it a good gaming device you make it less desirable for those other functions.

I never play MP3's on my PSP.

What an awkward way to do it and a silly waste of a PSP's battery.

Especially when a 4 gig ipod knockoff cost 20 bucks and is light as a feather.

The only alternative functions that I use my PSP for is comics and text files, which work well enough thanks to HB.

Admittedly they would be even easier to nav with a touch screen, but I prefer that trade of for a fully equipped gaming device foremost.

(BTW: Not so impressed with 3ds' 3 cameras. We'll see.)

The new exploits and upcoming HENs will increase the value of the Go, and they will probably sell like hotcakes after a 6.31 HEN is released. It's inevitable, there's always SOMETHING to be exploited. Maybe it'll bring life back to the scene, instead of a few small releases and scattered major releases every now and then. I'm hopeful, but not holding my breath.

# Late again lmao!SnowSerpent 2010-10-12 22:04
 Sony smart idea. But don't you think this is late to the party already? I think we all know you lost the Portable market to the DS and 3DS. As well as to I-POD TOUCH etc.. But if your working on PSP-2 It better be not so expensive! And it better have touch screen's. And definitely be very innovative if you want to succeed Sony! 8)

I'll pick one up after Total_Noob releases his exploit. :D That way I can play all my emulators on the Go. Personally, I like how small it can get because it fits better in my pocket than the PSP now. Now my PSP and my phone can share a pocket.

It seems a few retailers have gotten a jump on SCEA because it has been available for $199 for a couple of months now (at least at Wal-Mart it has been)... although I've heard that the price drop was "to try and boost sales before the holiday season & will 'probably' go back to its original $249 price tag", so I've heard from a Sony Rep.

If lots of ppl are aware of Total N00b's FW hen release, that would be good for ppl and Sony (IF the GO starts seeing more sales). Everyone would win

The problem with the PSP Go is even Sony sees it as a failed product at this point. If they drop the price too much that pretty much announces it. If they drop the price too little it won't garner any interest. Custom firmware or not it's doomed.

They need to lower the price of the games on PSN, that's what's killing it. The unit would be worth the investment if the software wasn't 50% higher than the same games at retail.

Wrong end of the stick Sony, give yourselves a nice *facepalm*
