Games for rent on PSP? - Image 1Those who've gotten a PSP Go and have spent some time tinkering around the XMB may have come across a few folders pointing to expiring games. Since when were games cooked in tomato sauce? Apparently, we may be looking at a yet-to-be-announced feature for the new PSP, which could be pointing to the possibility of digital game rental.

Of course, a few empty folders alone won't be sufficient to point to that conclusion. But back in May, Sony already surveyed for the feasibility of such a feature, asking if consumers would be alright with gaming rentals for the PSP via the PlayStation Store. Without UMDs to rent, surely, this would seem like the digital counterpart.

The feature, actually, could not be limited to the PSP Go. Previous PSP models running on the latest firmware also have the same folders, so it might not simply be to due the lack of a UMD drive.

» More then a rumor

A few weeks ago I was at a trade show and next to our booth was Sony showing off the Go! and the Slim PS3. I got a chance to ask a few questions about the Go!. One of them being about the game rentals. The response I got was, a big smile and "Do you have another question?".

From that response I think Sony will start the rental program. The only downside from Sony's point of view is that games from PSN can be decrypted and turned into ISO's. I think the rentals will only be done from the Go! and the rented games will use a different format and encryption. Something along the lines of the Go! update PBP that will not run on the older versions of the PSP.

» Definately needed

Some people spent $200-$300 for games the day they bought this, and if realise they don't like the Psp go they'll be stuck with those games with no chance of refund or trade in, Sony should have done this the day it was released but their greed for all the early sales was just too much to resist.

» Old....

well, only read the top part of the news....

But like on PS3, when you press the square on the different categories on the XMB (Video, Photo, Music) they change sort-order (so to speak)... and when doing it on PSP in the games folder, it sorts between ALL and Expiration date... so it's not Go-exclusive.

and it's slightly old too

» Nickle and diming mother......

The motive is to create another way to make money off people that want to try a game before they buy it. They should be releasing more game demos in the US and also implement the game sharing feature more often....

» demos vs. rentals

believe it or not people rent games because it's cheap and they get the whole game at their disposal. demos have limited gameplay, limited features, and not 100% complete meaning bugs are present and visuals are iffy. plus, some developers don't release demos for certain games.

and of course it's another way to make money. they are a business, of course. i dont know why people don't understand this.
