Rumor: PSP-4000 incoming with new sexiness, sliding screen |
Listed in: PSP Tags: GDC, Mylo, PSP2, Sony
Ó
Rumors that just don't want to die usually have some truth to it. And this rumor has been around for ages. VG247 reports that the PSP-4000 is real, and that it will have a "complete aesthetic overhaul," according to their source.
This means this rumored model isn't the PSP2, just a new design based on "existing PSP tech." We probably won't see any real functional changes, then. What's the biggest change? A sliding screen, Ã la Sony Mylo. The source says that the current design isn't that far away from the fan-made image above.
So when will we see this gee-golly-jeepers-that's-amazing-molly new PSP design? According to the VG247, it will be announced at either GDC or E3. The model itself will be released sometime this year, which concurs with earlier rumors. Personally, I want to see this happen, but I'll believe it when I see it.
Cross your fingers:
- Rumor bucket: PSP 2 out next year
- Koller: PSP 2 rumors "completely unfounded", new PSP strategy in the works
- David Reeves: no plans for PSP 2, software is PSP's weakness

if PSP4000 had 2 analog-sticks, then, that would mean only some games would be 100% compatible with it.. and thus, it would be a PSP2
you can't release 2 PSPs of the same type, and not have them do the same (includes model-upgrades)!!
^^ should be simple enought to understand..
otherwise you could call PS3; PS2-model-60000 !! it's the same... so the new PSP won't have 2 analog-sticks (unless SONY wants to piss of it's fans even more....... doesn't include me though

I'm starting to seriously think that Nintendo is the one who really knows how to produce fun without any competitor.

Now, what I think about the actual possibilities of the design? I speculate that the PSP will no longer have the traditional oval ends. It will take on the shape of a rectangle. Probably some silver accents around here and there. They possibly could increase the screen size, as technology up to this point always leads that way. If you take an example from digital cameras, over a period of two years, the cameras got thinner, more powerful, faster, and came with progessively larger screens. Also, they worked out most of the design flaws, by attempting to make it less high-tech, and more ergonomic. They realised that comfort was a selling point. Now, how this relates to these design changes in the PSP is evident already. They first made it thinner. This was because the thing had issues being able to fit comfortably in a pocket. Then, they upgraded the internals to make the loading time quicker and to help save battery life. Now, my best guess, is that they will focus on the ergonomics. They will drop the high-tech look, and go for something that fits into a pocket more reasonably, and will boast the bigger screen size. This is the exact same trend most devices undergo. Also, my final presumption, is that this will be the last revision to the series.
The PSP is a dead horse, honestly. They need to bury it and move on. They have made improvements, but the fact that their console was completely devistated by hackers of young and old only helped them learn from their mistakes. The PS3 was a huge improvement over the competitors, as it is still unbroken and only slightly ever penetrated. By the time a genious comes along and finally solves the security system in place, the PS3 will have paid for itself in units sold versus production cost. The portable unit, if they continue with the current model, will no doubt tank the gaming portion of the company. It undoubtably has had to take huge losses from lingering developers. I really hope they work to develop the next era of portables with tighter security, because without it, developers will have all but left that market.

At any rate, good news I guess. Curious what new tweaks in the PSP-4000 there going to fix.

Sony knows they can't stop piracy or the custom firmware of people. That what makes the PSP awesome than Nintendo's, the CFW. While I'm not big on that stuff, it makes sense why alot of people are clamoring over the greatness of it. Sony has always made redesigns of their consoles. PS1 and PS2 are testaments on that.

That's always been my favorite fanmade PSP look.

U want a slim, buy a PSP-2000 or Perhaps you want it even brighter, there you go PSP -3000 and slimmer too...
May be this PSP2 would have new games only for PSP2 and it will run PSP games too... Except the homebrews, until DAX hack in it lol
Let us wait, Possibly this would beat DS! expectations, and if you want touch screen buy a DS!!, PSP was meant to play buy buttons and Joystick.
Just wait, and save money, that's all.
I 'm planning on buying meself the DS! and I never had a DS before, I know how it works but I haven't buy any because I know there's always more copies of the Portable console that are better, with the PSP I did buy the first because it was something never release before! So awesome when it came out... But if this all truth that this PSP2 its coming out this year, I will save up money for this instead of that DS!, then I will buy that one, I guess I can say good bay to the Iphone, too expensive!
Lets just wait!

Old games are designed to work with one analog stick.
The new PSP has 2 analog sticks.
Now, what about there being a second analog stick would make old games "incompatible" with the new hardware?
The games would still work - they just would not utilize the second analog stick.

So if games aren't as functional on previous models of PSP if they utilize both analog sticks, its basically creating a completely new hardware (read PSP2) instead of a new model.

i want the psp2 to look just like that on the picture above.
intel atom plus nvidia ion processors.
no more UMD, games comes from PSN and memsticks.
should also be fully compatible with psp1 games.
i dont care if it has internal flash drive or not as long as we can put a memory stick or SD (to keep the cost from inflating).
mic and camera built in.
if it can do touch screen then a virtual keyboard is ok.
OTHEROS > linux and or windows
real usable flash compatible browser like firefox.

@Stealth!
Hey, I totally understand the hacking issue. Hackers can not be stopped. There is always a crack in the metal, and over time and with force applied it will eventually give way. I am just critical of the fact that most of these titles that we are waiting for aren't here, and they "have yet to come out..." is the evidence that supports we are still waiting. We might just put that on the todo list and file it in the round bin. I can almost, with out a doubt, imagine the titles we missed out on because a developer backed out. Pardon my words, but it is like a couple deciding to have a baby, whome by chance would have been the next Einstein and could have solved many of our worlds problems. Now see that the couple decided they didn't want to bring a child into a world filled with criminals and distrust. Sort of getting what i'm putting out? We just need to move along, before the developers lose trust in a shakey foundation that Sony built the Portable on.

I really hope they add Two analog sticks to the unit, but i'd might as well wish for world peace and a golden crap. I'll have more luck getten them than the the two sticks. Listen to your fans Sony mother*****ers!

if sony should improve something they should think about those :
- make the analog nub easier on the fingers - better grip and preferably a softer button - my thumb hurts after ~15 minutes of gaming, if you are playing a dynamic, action game.
- throw in a better, more robust wi-fi chip. the current one is ok, but it has poor range, and somewhat crappy performance.
- better (faster) web browser.
- second usb port? (just in case the one you have gets broken or something)
- the case should be easy to replace. and along with the buttons, too. i've bought a used fat psp and L+R were pretty worn out already. also the wi-fi switch is quite dodgy right now.

As for your comparison, it's also a ridiculous one. I suggest you come back with a better argument instead of one that actually is, in my opinion, stupid. Sony allows people to hack or CFW there systems, so I don't see the issue unless it's just personal taste. But that has nothing to do with those games having yet being released in other areas or finishing in production
The reason why the PSP hasn't gotten much support was due to the UMD and it's limitations. But I commend Sony for trying to get into the handheld business where most of the past companies failed to compete against Nintendo, and to this day, PSP is still selling quite strong and giving competition to Nintendo's DS. The PSP is a success no matter how you slice it. Same as PS3. hitting 21.3 million consoles sold in 2 years is very impressive.
