Rumor: PSP 2 could rival the PS3 graphics |

So while we wait for the impending announcement of the PlayStation phone to arrive, more details of the elusive/long rumored Playstation Portable 2 has once again surfaced online, this time, giving us a more "comprehensive rundown of the device's features from someone with direct hands-on experience with the forthcoming handheld."

The juicy details comes from a source close to IGN, which states that the "current iterations of the PSP 2 will feature dual analog sliders that are comparable to those found on the existing PSP but are unique in that they have concave indentations rather than convex. It maintains the slider design of the PSP Go, but increases the overall size to accommodate the new features and a slightly larger touch-enabled display."
The source also confirmed that the the PSP 2, much like the PSP Go, will lack UMD drive and will only run downloadable or expandable memory-based games. The device also features both front- and rear-facing cameras, presumably "for pictures, video recording and communication, and augmented reality-based games." IGN also says that the rear-mounted touch panel is real and features a smooth glass-like surface, which our source says "can be used for a variety of input functions such as analog thumbstick-type controls, taps, swipes and other gesture commands like a swipe to reload motion."
But perhaps the most interesting tidbit that the source has revealed is the graphical prowess of the device, which the source says is a "beast, packing enough processing hardware to produce graphics comparable to early PlayStation 3 titles. The processor, we're told, is just over half as powerful as the PS3, though the specific framework of the cores and the clock speed was not revealed."
The source added that while the device isn't as powerful as the PS3, its "components should allow it to sufficiently play games of comparable graphical quality due to the fact that it is rendering to a smaller, lower-resolution display than a full 1080p HDTV."
Another interesting revelation from the source suggest that Sony plans to allow "developers to port or custom-tailor PlayStation 3 titles for use on the handheld, potentially to create a ubiquitous gameplay experience that could sync seamlessly between the console and the handheld. In other words, players could potentially start games on their PlayStation 3 and continue them on-the-go with the PSP 2."

also i dont think its a real deal breaker for a new console, for an existing one yes (psp go)
but if the psp2 need extra space to do what reported it can do that
in fact if kiosks are at local stores (which i can see happening) i think people will prefer downloads, no carrying extra stuff around with you
remember this is meant to be portable
and its totally possible for portable games to rival the early ps3 graphics
i dont really care about the price providing it does what it promies ill happily part upto a grand

however, i agree, it is kind of nice to be able to hold the the casing and read physical instruction manuals...

With those supposed specs, i bet it comes built in with huge memory space..

If Sony wants to succeed here, they need more new handheld titles, not adaptations of current titles.

Handheld game development costs around £0.5-5 million. HD console games cost around £15 million.
Whoever spread these wrong rumours... do they not know that most handheld devs won't be able to afford these HD costs? Do they not know customers won't pay £300 for a handheld console? Don't they know this would result in fewer games for our consoles?
This is why I hate fanboys online who spread such obvious lies.

I think it has worked pretty well.
The best games on the PSP are the full on/all out titles that utilize the hardware IMO.
The PSP is as powerful as a console.
I find popcap "specifically for handheld" games to be somewhat of an insult when I've paid for a more capable system.
If I want cellphone/pokemon games I'll play them on a cellphone/nintendo.
But I bought a PSP instead.

Good thing this is just a dev build or I'd be very disappointed...stupid + D-pad...

If true, it also shows that Sony has learned nothing from the Go. And that really is pitiful.
*Sigh* I'll stick with the current PSP I suppose or look at the 3DS.

I would buy it just for that I guess.

But you can reach that answer without developing games for it.
It's portable - it has a high DPi display - it runs off a battery that Sony aim to get the most life out of.
Of course it won't have PS3 quality graphics. You'd have to be a total buffoon to believe that.
I also don't know what kind of spaz your source is but download only? Again you'd have to be a moron to see how wrong that is. The Go was a record-breaking failure. Neither Sony, nor the majority of residential internet connections, have the capacity to provide a good service comparable to what physical media provides. That's why we won't be seeing flagship download-only consoles for a while. The 3DS has physical media and so will the PSP2.

Overkill.
And merciless on a battery I'm sure.
The trick for a handheld is finding the middleground sweetspot when power is limited IMO.

Also, is the main screen a touch screen? I think its a must, the more variety of inputs the more innovative games there will be

If PSP 2 doesn't have a physical media format then it'll flop cause most of us aren't willing to pay for digital shit. And like to own the original hard copies.

The 3DS promises current gen console graphics, just in lower resolution. That would not be possible give its current specs. I believe the PSP2 will be closer in meeting that, but only in the way the PSP could reproduce the PS2's graphics (not as good.)

The biggest improvement to the PS3 over the PS2 is the power to support a higher res(as shown with 1080p emulator screenshots). As long as the PSP2 stays 480p or lower, it can just have the power of a PS2(maybe a little more for extra polygons and bigger textures) and it will "rival the PS3 graphics".
Whenever you complain about the downsides of the terrible amount of "graphical power" a portable console is rumored or advertised to have, remember that the people spreading the rumors or producing the ads are out to make money. They will exaggerate and lie to sell their product.
PS: Sony, make the PSP2 play PS2 games and it will sell.

That would be great, yes, but PSP2 needs something more. I would like that Sony would allow a development of applications (sold on some store or as a free download). In addition, PSP2 would need more features compared to PSP: pdf-reader, for example. Then it could compete with ebook readers (in this case a little wider screen would be appreciated).

Just because the PSPhone exists, doesn't mean it's the PSP2.

2nd game informer had a pic of the finished product of the psp2 in the new release. was kinda interesting to see. because the nubs are both on the bottom inner between the d-pad and the square circle X and triangle buttons. really can't wait to see this come out hopefully they get something good goin on because the 3ds might dominate sales with the 3d capabilities with such limited hardware.
