Rumor: Logitech has PSP Go UMD add-on in the works

Logitech being singled out as the manufacturer behind the rumored add-on.

This comes from an unidentified source who informed online gaming news site CVG of Logitech's alleged plans. Neither price nor release information were mentioned, but apparently the ad-on would "plug into the PSP Go, allowing users to play their UMD games on the portable."

Logitech UK said that they're "not aware of it, so it may be something the US office is working on." Neither Logitech's US office nor Sony have so far said anything about this rumor, although knowing Sony I bet it'll just be the usual "we don't comment on rumors" jazz.

While such an accessory would be beneficial to PSP Go owners who also have the older PSP models, I can't help but be pessimistic about its impact on PSP Go - Image 1

Put on your rumor hats, folks, we've got us a big one. Talk is starting up about a UMD reader accessory for the PSP Go, with peripheral maker the Go's popularity, especially since a cheaper alternative already exists in the form of the PSP-3000. What say you?

You shouldn't have to pay extra for something that was already a feature in past models, but at least Logitech sees the logic in a PSP being able to use it's own format of games.

During the weekend I put some serious thought into purchacsing the psp go. I just couldnt go through with spending $250.00 on that device. The price is what steered me towards the 3000, which I purchased for $170.00. Knock off $100.00, or even $150.00, and its a done deal for me! Dont tell me the bluetooth features is what increased the price. Splurging money is cool do not get me wrong, but this is not worth it. Iam still playing the waiting game. Plus I want free games just like those countries get when they download some wallpaper or something or register it. GHAHAHAHA i do not want that stupid Rockband game that comes with it if you purchase it from my Walmart.

While I don't have enough UMDs to honestly care, this would allow the PS Go to have a game hack that won't be as easily blocked as the last one did. What once could easily be blocked on PSN is now free game with UMDs. Hopefully this will also be used in some way so we can take our purchased UMDs and load them onto our Gos.

Wouldn't that completely destory the reason of the PSP Go, if you have to carry around a UMD drive? Also, Sony wouldn't allow this peripheral, since the PSP Go was a step against piracy. With an UMD drive, you could exploit games again.

# Great rumor! ^_^Guest 2009-12-02 07:34
I hope this comes reality, I want a PSP-Go! but because it doesn't has a UMD driver it won't suit me.

Go for it, Logitech!

If the UMD drive add-on is created then exploitable games that would have been made useless due to PSN and digital game patching could be purchased at a store and ran in such a device to allow users of all 4 PSP models a new cfw regardless of Sony's restrictions on their own material.

Doesn't this get rid of the whole "Portability" factor ? I mean what are you gonna do, carry the Go and the adapter with you in your pocket ? I mean come on, some of us aren't in first grade ! :\ I'd rather be able to copy my own games to the Go. Heck, i'm pretty happy with my slim anyway. :P

I thinks this rumor is a complete fake.

But if they really release something like this then it would be easy for Sony to block this thing with a firmware update.

Last year at sony's main PSP business conference:

"We need a way to make more money with our PSP franchise!"

"Hey I have an idea - let's just remove the UMD drive, then make a deal with logitech and sell it sperately. And in the end, it's even more expensive!"

"Dude that sounds great"

# Piracy... RealityRetroGamerX3 2009-12-02 19:31
sony, microsoft, apple and nintendo can try to stop piracy,
but in reality it'll never go away.
i mean theres already an exploit for the PSP Go...
Sony cant do anything about it, except update the firmware.
And if they do that it just gets cracked all over again.
I really think piracy cant be stopped, just like the flow of drugs in many countries.

I hope this is real and they release some function to copy said UMD to the system. The Go's biggest fault is that you can only get games from 1 place - PSN. With all its DRM, region lockings, overpriced, limited selections...
Yea. I can dream.

That ridiculous thing is just to add the mini-usb port to the top of the go, like the original.....so you can use your camera or gps unit....stupidest thing ever. (They should have built a camera into the go in the first place)

I think the only solution that would work, without increasing chances of piracy...is to have a program where you mail sony your UMD and they mail you a card with a PSN code on it so you can download your game.

Its not Logitech. There is no way this cannot be done without official support from Sony.
