Retailer: PSP Go will "fail miserably", Apple's success on digital distribution is Apple's alone

Set sail for fail. That's what the independent games chain Chips' managing director believes where the PSP Go is headed to. Don McCabe is of the (rather) strong opinion that the PSP Go will "fail miserably."

"I'm 99.9 per cent sure it's going to fail miserably, in which case it's going to put back other potential people coming into that digital space." However, there is a good thing that can come out of this failure, and it's the retailers who will benefit the most from it. As you will know, it is allegedly the game retailers who are the most in trouble with the arrival of the digital handheld.

PSP Go - Image 1
Definitely a rocky start

"I heard from someone at Sony saying 'this steps our authority on the digital space and signals our intent,' and actually what I think is that they'll scare the crap out of anyone else who tries to follow," he goes on.

McCabe is but another one of those retailers who are looking at the PSP Go as the fluke success that Sony is hyping up. ShopTo CEO Igor Cipolleta has also confirmed to GamesIndustry that the launch of the PSP Go was actually off to a "slow start", considering how the consumers are turned off by the high prices of the bundles, even though there lacks the presence of physical software.

McCabe also looks at Apple and sees that while the digital downloads are definitely booming in that area, truth of the matter is that developers are having quite a hard time profiting from it.

Apple's a tremendous success story for Apple, it's not a tremendous success story for anybody else. It's going to come, no matter what, but a very small amount of people are actually going to go on to make any money out of it. One or two will make serious money and they'll be help as 'you too can do this.' Whenever you see anyone producing fantastic figures, just ask them how much they actually made from it.

» PSP Go!

No homebrew, no CFW.

Even worse, no UMD support everything has to be downloaded = FAIL!!

Main reason I download isos is that I hate carrying around a load of UMDs. Yeah I still buy them but they go on the shelf and I go get the iso version. Having everything go on the memory stick is extremely useful especially on a portable device.

What do you expect? Its only been out a while look at the psp 3000 ? Come on !!! You have to give it time:P

In my opinion I think it won't fail as long as $ony stop trying to $$ every person with their expensive content.

Of PSP GO, they have already made one.

You should make an article about this, it looks identical to GO in everyway except this one has a 4.3 inch screen.

Everyone is just jumping on the band wagon of putting down the PSP Go... I personally don't think it will fail and I feel it is a good piece of kit as I do own one.

» LOL

funny how the previous article says retailers to be overtaken by digital downloads in 3 years.

its all biased, all bull*****. according to retailers, psp go will fail because digital distribution sucks, while sony says digital distribution is the future.

but i do agree that the psp go sucks but not because of the digital downloads, but because its still THE SAME GODDAMN PSP only pricier and smaller. i mean cmon, sony promised a whole new psp after the 2000 version. plus they released the go too soon. i mean they just released the 3000 version then they release the go.

You can still buy the SAME stuff from the PSN on the PSP-1000 2000 and 3000 too and not carry around new UMDs.

As a bonus you can also rip your legal UMDs since you have CFW.

The PSPGo*****yours elf is a complete moot product and actually LACKs features. Just like every single PS3 released after the launch console has only gotten WORSE not better. Every other company improves their consoles. Sony makes them WORSE than the launch console.

» plus

i was really hoping for a second nub, a touch screen, normal mapping/bump mapping, faster processor and more ps2 ports, higher flash version for netfront.

sony promised all that months before releasing the 3000 model.

» retard

I really don't put anything into the comment of a retailer... it's because of digital download that they're getting stiffed on game sales and that makes them mad.

As far as I see the PSPgo is selling, so bam, it's not a failure. Should Sony drop the price? Hells yeah, but as it is, it's selling... and we're in what? week one?

by hush404 - 2009-10-08 02:31
» ...reknow is a dumbass.

Sony didn't promise any of those things you f*cking idiot.

The PSPgo is nothing but a repackaged PSP3000, to expect them to create a whole new machine, thus making their other one completely useless is complete lunacy! Come time for the PSP2, you might get your second nub and other upgrades... but expecting them in a re-design shows that you have near the amount of brain cells as a gawd damn door knob.

by Humpfreey - 2009-10-08 04:00
» sub-standard

The Go is way over-priced and offers little new, the Sony PSP division needs a restructuring as at the moment they are sub-standard.

Missing this 1 for sure

by NathanDrake - 2009-10-08 04:02

Makes them worse than the launch console? My PSP Slim is far better than the regular PSP my friend has. And the PS3 Slim is a great machine and much nicer due to it being smaller (would actually fit better on my cabinet). The only thing that bugs me about it is the lack of Other OS function.

Main reasons I like the Go are the sliding screen over the controls, and the 32gb combined storage. Can fit all my isos, emulators/roms, homebrew games and programs on that with plenty of room for future stuff.

by RJ - 2009-10-08 04:08

Are Steam users also "fĂșckers"? Or people who only buy PSN games, or people who buy a PSP Go?

by RJ - 2009-10-08 04:10
» -

Wait, you didn't expect sales to go up during a product launch? Even the PS3 started with a sales surge and that was a PR disaster (it was even the topic of a lecture I attended). What is important is a constant stream of sales. That 300% isn't going to continue. Not sure why they wanted to point that out, it's like celebrating locking your front door and not having a bird ***** on you.

I still dont understand why you would go out and buy a PSP go and has the same features as the regular psp other than the bluetooth and pay way more money for it.......it just doesnt make any god damn sense!!!!

I guess as it looks 'new and shiny', when will Sony stop faffing about and give us a cool design like dual screens?

FAIL?

the psp go is selling too damn fast in USA!!

and sony just started to low its price to $199

and the psp go is already hacked but we need to wait for a CFW.

by Genotype - 2009-10-08 06:15
» ...

They should wait until it starts failing to call it a failure. The 16 gig internal memory and bluetooth support justify the price, and the support of bluetooth makes it a better music player than the toothless ipods imo.

by Versus - 2009-10-08 06:24
» @Atownaction

The psp go is not for people who already own a psp. its meant to appeal to new customers who havent yet bought a psp. New customers who are not in the CFW and Homebrew loop will go for this product because they dont knw what old psp is able to do.

by Alycan - 2009-10-08 06:35
» Sales up 300%.. Deff not a faill.

SCEA: US PSP sales up 300% thanks to the PSP Go

PSP Go! 199,- in the UK.

Doesn't sound like a faill to me. +Why the hell use UMD it sucks so much power. + Savestates + Bleutooth modem in combi with a phone.

Sony is learning from the homebrew community. Also the shops shouldn't complain for a bit cause there still able to sell al new releases on UMD (sony stated that before that all new games will be both download and UMD release) Also the retailers earn money from the PSn cards same way as from the apple store cards.

It's all just *****ing around because they can.

by MadCat340 - 2009-10-08 07:17
» oh for the love of cheese

everyone can't just expect sony to make a brand new console when there isn't anything (graphically) which challanges it.

one main point two nubs makes it a new system with new games crossing out the older ones pluas the fact why make a new system when the psps still going strong?

i do admit the go! is the same console but i liked the first console so whats the point of a new one *plus i hate nums *

Look you don't like the PSP GO!

Dont *****ing buy it, its that simple.

Now you can just stfu and not criticize on stuff you cant afford.

the battery life might be a problem

by Dark_Skai - 2009-10-08 09:02

people *****ed about how expensive the ps3 was when it was actually the same price as its rival when you include everything the ps3 had, that's why they they dumbed it down because dumb people kept complaining, so they had to compromise.

» Chips?

Lol @ "Independent games chain Chips"

I've never heard of them!

The original PSP and slim have never been great software sellers anyway.

50 million PSP sold, some big PSP titles don't sell more than a couple of hundred thousand copies. :\

Even has a built in camera. I could go for one of those.

Remember the camera option on the real psp go under photo? Y is that there if Sony didn't even make (probrably wont) a camera peripheral available in the united states for old psp's and the go?

by Silver-Tiger - 2009-10-08 13:08
» .....

hahaha....

I think it's funny. The Retailers are only afraid of the digital future. They couldn't care less about the PSP Go, if it wouldn't be digital only. They are afraid to loose money, because they can't sell games for it anymore. That's all.

by chessboxer - 2009-10-08 13:49

and I wouldn't buy from them either. They still sell COD4 on PS3 for ÂŁ49.99 and that's not even the GOTY version!!!

» hush404 is a dumbass knowitall jerk

check the archives of qj.net, they have a video featuring the supposed new game engine thats running on the new psp.

and besides thats exactly what im saying, PSPgo is a repacked 3000 model.

like i said before, they released a number of videos saying the next version after the 2000 model will be a DIFFERENT PSP, a PSP 2 they said.

read before you call someone a dumbass, you dumbass know it all jerk.

by chessboxer - 2009-10-08 17:23
» No reyknow...

Sony never said that the next PSP would be a PSP2. If you check the qj.net archives or the archives of any other well known gaming site, you will not find any official statement from a Sony rep stating such a thing.

If Sony were to release a PSP2, it would get announced at an E3, a massive event where they have the gaming worlds attention and not some random videos posted on the net.

» No Torch is Right....

Every PS3 after Launch has gotten worsed (in a feature sense.)

1.Dropped PS2 compatibility to software then dropped it again after that to non existant

2.Removed the Memory Reader Ports it DID use to have a 7in1 card reader on the earlier models

3.lastly but not least they removed the install other OS function likely to avoid future possibility of homebrew on PS3

oh and they made the slims extremely ugly and removed the nice shiny finish

» The Features of a PSP-Go

A lot of ppl seem to be confused as to what this thing is capable of. 16gb of internal storage, Pause/ Resume, and Bluetooth. Thats what sold me. The size is nice too.

Bluetooth = Dualshock 3 on your PSP. Very awesome for games like Monster Hunter Freedom. It also allows you to play your 2 player PS1 games with a friend. Thats freakin awesome as hell.

Pause/ Resume = Ever started up your psp to browse the web or play some media but werent quite near a save point yet or possibly in a game that doesnt save at all?

Now you can, in fact you can bust out another game and still keep that state until you resume or write over the last one. That made Brave Story playable to me. Its also very useful for Thexder and StreetFighterAl pha2.

I have a lot to ***** about this thing for but for those reasons I think it was worth buying.
