Report: Sony working on PlayStation phone, iPad competitor

It's like not a year goes by when we don't hear about Sony's alleged PSP phone. Apparently it's that time of year again. The Wall Street Journal reports that according to industry insiders, such a device is in the works along with another device being built to stand up to Apple's iPad.

“That’s the vision, but it’s still not quite clear what specific steps Sony will take to achieve that, especially when iPad and other highly capable mobile devices are crowding the market,” said Nobuo Kurahashi, consumer-electronics analyst with Mizuho Investors Securities.

As the WSJ's source puts it, the new device "blurs distinctions among a netbook, an e-reader and a PSP". The smart phone, on the other hand, will let users download and play PlayStation games. Sounds kinda like the Satio, doesn't it? Both devices will also reportedly support Sony's new online media platform and will launch this year.

Hmm, I don't really care what Sony does to improve on the hardware side just yet(unless PSP2). They need more killer apps for the PSP. I know, PSP has awesome games but a lot of them don't even get released outside of Europe.

A lot of RPGs are still in Japan. Look at what PSP can actually do, God of war is a fine example and so is Dissidia and Crisis core. Soon, Kingdom hearts.

Instead of bringing out new hardware every couple of months they should focus on third party support.(Yes, i'm not mentioning a lot of games. That would take too long)

Plus, aren't Sony and Ericsson partners? Why not just make a phone

I can't speak for RSX, but I have used the iPhone 2G and it sucks just as bad as any other Apple product and just as bad as any other cell phone out there, even worse.

instead of being an apple dumbass (i hate that retarded company and most of its stupid hippy users) you could get a droid phone, its open source, doesnt have a bunch of shit apps clogging up the store, and their phones out preform iphone. (note nexus1 and N900, also pretty much anything high end from HTC)

Steve Jobs or whoever, have been calling out the PSP and claiming that they will win over more consumers with the iPod touch because of it's touch screen gaming capabilities and it's cheap prices and so on and so on.

iPod touch and phone just happen to play games and eventhough it may be fun and innovative to catch attention, they are not primary gaming consoles. So SCEA has every right to counter them.

I don't care what Sony does @ this point, but whatever they do, they had better do it right. Obviously, it's not gonna look as big and obserd as the iPad.

If it's a "PSP phone" then compete with iPhone not iPad.

Why would Sony take the same exact route as the iPad?? They are competing against it with features and more accessible options & the games are still the primary focus.

And so what if you think SOCOM FTB3 sucked, get used to the controls, It's the PSP. Beyond all the shit you bitch about in that game, is a fantastic experience that pushes the PSP's power to it's limits.

Well see my biggest problem isn't the software because i know there's some really good stuff there, the problem is touch screens are horrible for text entry on internet etc and playing games, and things like camera seriously underperform compared to other high end smartphones and unreplacable battery and memory just make it unusable for me, Apple stuff is good if you just want a easy to use phone but too many people know the phone won't do everything they need but buy it anyway.

What I would like to see is something similar to what apple did with the ipod touch/iphone. Have two similar models with almost exactly the same capabilities but offer one including the phone capabilities ect... this way people aren't cheated out and everyone wins. Something like this would kinda make sense right about now seeing as how the psp is pretty much at the end of its life cycle, so who knows only time will tell O_o

people imo sony's best move would be to combine the Ericsson X10 with the psp brite/go. that way we get to keep our UMDs and get all the power of Google's android OS(and apps) but with sliding out game controls like the psp go(only bigger for those of use with larger hands).

I hate the concept art, playstation is meant to be desirable not looking like something microsoft would churn out of their ass. Anyway, it will prob look like the PSPGo with a phone built in, and touch screen, none of this stupid buttons everywhere lark. I would buy if it was cheap but it's not going to be, you know they will price it like an iphone or PSPGo plus Ericsson touchscreen multimedia phone.
