Reeves: Sony needs to release PSP2 soon

Former Sony Europe boss, David Reeves, says that Sony needs to release the often-rumored PSP2 soon if they want to compete in the handheld market with Nintendo. Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, the current Capcom Europe COO states:

"It's an exciting time and you could possibly have two handhelds coming out within months or a year of each other. I'd like to the think it would be for the publishers and developers and consumers. Sony tried to make the transition with PSPgo, I think that changed some consumers' attitudes, but they need to come back with something on PSP pretty quickly to stay in the game because Nintendo are s*** hot at getting these things right. And they always get these things right."

A lot of us were expecting a PSP2 unveiling at this week's E3, but, unfortunately, it didn’t happen. What we got is a shinny new 3D enabled handheld from Nintendo, that created a lot of buzz in the industry and could potentially kick down the PSP even further down the drain.

I have been mouning ever since the 1st Phat PSP needed dual nubs. SONY doesn't listen to their consumers and releases the PSP Go with no 2nd nub which is the 3 iteration of the PSP, thus if the next PSP doesn't have 2nd nubs I will never buy a SONY product ever again.

I'm not really liking Sony lately: they've been kind of money grubbing and indifferent to what their customers want, so screw them. It would take a LOT to get me to buy a psp2 at this point. I'm switching to Nintendo where they don't try to nickel and dime with you dlc that's already on the disc (they don't do that on nintendo, do they?), and they don't give mandatory firmware updates that disable features.

nintendo is notorious for gouging consumers. there really is no value when you compare them to their competitors; if you compare systems directly (specs, games, and quality) nintendo loses every time. but they can sell those things like apple can sell macs

Sony failed with the release of PSPGo so that's why they probably didn't announce anything.

Here's what the PSP2(I call it P2P) need:
1. 2 analogs
2. Size. Needs to actually be portable like the Go.
3. Cheap with high memory capasity
4. Needs something bigger than UMDs or at least not all digital.
5. A camera
6. Great digital contents
7. Maybe 3D

I doubt that price will be less than $200 with the said features. I could care less for the camera but people want something more than just a gaming tool.

Accelerometer and bluetooth are huge and have become a part of gaming through the Wii and the iPhone. [ Gyroscope is making its entrance... ]. Bluetooth is huge as hell in gaming, considering its used in the PS3, the Wii, and in PC gaming.. Touch screens are taking over the world. Sim Card... unnecessary. But could be possible considering that Sim cards are appearing in more than just phones.

Ahhh, I say, if Sony really wants to kill the competition, they should utilize their OWN technology, chuck some Bravia LED technology into the screen to make it high-resolution and bright, with great contrast. Use the technology from their Sony Ericsson side and chuck some 3G or even 4G in there to game on the go (not talking about a phone here, just internet) Use some of that power that the VAIO range has got and utilize that contact you have with Intel or someone alike to create a GREAT processor, that doesn't need to be overclocked to stop lag. Use some Sony Xplode technology to enusre we have EXCELLENT sound in there. I dont understand, Sony is a MASSIVE corporation, they make almost ANYTHING electrical, why do they not utilize their OWN technology which would make it a lot cheaper and better?

The PSP2 needs something NEW. NEW is a difficult commodity to find but it sells more than anything else. If the people at sony can figure out a way to bring something new and exiting that isn't a gimmick and hasn't been done before or isn't widely talked about they can succeed. The 3ds brought 3d without glasses and 3d gaming for more than a gimmick but a practical step forward for the gaming industry. For sony to keep it's head about water they need something to match it.

Anyone hoping for Sony to ditch any of their formats like the UMD or the Pro Duo memory sticks, you might want to rethink your line of thought.

Sony's entire strategy for -years- has been to introduce new formats into a verity of industries in order to dominate the market. Blu-Ray, Betamax, Mini-Disk, MS-Pro Duo, UMD, and so on.

If a PSP2 does come along, I predict another shitty format, perhaps even worse than UMD.

I'd love to see the next PSP have

High resolution screen at the same size as a normal PSP
2 nubs and L2 R2 buttons
Internal and external memory
Definitely higher UMD capacity
Definitely more power
Built in accelerometer and bluetooth
Cameras
No piracy!!
and last but not least if possible at all, built in hsdpa support.

Better games for the PSP would beat the 3DS anyday, which is why the PSP2 would also fail if Sony pulls the piracy card again. Sony needs to learn from their mistakes before ever thinking about releasing the PSP2.

I think the Apple's iProducts are the only real competitor to the DS at this point. I wouldn't be surprised if the next PSP had the Sony Ericsson brand with that green blob icon on the back instead of PSP2.

SD cards can't match the speed of Memory Sticks. If you want better graphics, you need to be able to transfer data faster, though I won't deny Memory Sticks are much more expensive.
Some "leaked" specs of the PSP2 appeared about a week ago, they mentioned the new disc would be called UMD MAX which supposedly can hold up to 3,6 gb... even portable games will be hard to pirate then XD

It really does need to be released. Why oh why did Sony focus so much on 3D when the market for such a thing is so tiny (around 0.7% of PS3 owners have 3D capable TVs), yet didn't bother with the PSP?

but seriously, how hard could it be to emulate PS2 games on a PS3? It's supposed to have one of the best processors in the world, but can't emulate 10 year old technology? I think they REMOVED that capability with newer systems to sell more PS2 systems.

ok. on topic. Sony is going to lose. They should go out of their way to allow some sort of homebrew. Apple's app store does it SOMEWHAT (although it's much easier to jailbreak) It opens doors for future devs, and could be considered a 'job application' for people who make good homebrew and submit it to sony. Sony needs to worry less about money and more about the customers themselves. If the pspGO ever gets CFW, sales are going to shoot through the roof, regardless.

I've had PSP's (3 in fact) and I've had DS's (5 total). The only reason I've had so many PSP's is because they fail. The only reason I've had so many DS systems, is because they've been stolen.

Sony make a deal with the Hackers, (behind Close Doors if that what it would take.) To allow for home brew and emulators of previous consoles run along side the OFW. Of course not allow for the current machine's Roms to be playable. I would think that would be a nice compromise?

Depends on the area.
Where I live (Trinidad, West Indies), the prices for new PSP games are usually so high, that most people opt for CFW
A new PSP game here is more expensive than a new PS3 game in the States...

problem with a lot of this is price/battery life. a bluray umd would be expensive and suck power...having a really powerful processor is power demanding, it is a "portable" gaming console. and as mentioned before using a sd card is not as fast and getting fast sd cards is just as expensive as ms pro duos. i think internal flash memory combined with a better umd possibly?

it'll be interesting to see what sony can come up with

The 3DS doesn't even have a launch date yet, and frankly the PSP is still a viable platform with some great games coming: KH:BBS, Persona 3, Ace Combat, Valkyria II and more. I love my PSP, I'm happy with it. More games would be nice though.

PSP2 just needs 3 things:
1. Remain multi-region
2. Improve the spec
3. Add a second analogue stick/R2+L2

That should give us a portable PS2.5. Perfectly fine for a hangheld. Don't bother with any lame gimmicks, just give me a solid portable gaming platform with some quality titles playable on any region.

Any of those 3 things go missing, I'm out.

What would you define as a gimmick, why is it a bad thing and why would you even mention it? Is that a stab at the 3DS or DS? Because both have had excellent "lives" since they were announced.

Bloody hell the PSP crowd are a funny bunch. The amount of tech I've heard of as being "gimmicky" that became standard is pretty brilliant. Widescreen, dedicated GPU, analogue sticks, rumble, online multiplayer, motion controls. Next up is 3D, and better still 3D without glasses.

I hope the PSP2 has a 3D display too. Really does need it. From what I saw of the 3DS was nothing short of amazing - the best thing for gaming in the last 5 years. It's so immersive and just plain useful and interesting! It will be great.

This is tough. They have these cool games coming out for the PSP soon and they barely released PSPGo.

Ethier they wait a year or 2, or release one soon and continue on making PSP games and using up those remaining life-span time on the PSP.

meh.. some of y'alls ideas of the psp2 are kinda cool, but Here's what I think it needs:

1) a better browser!!!

2) anti-aliasing in games! (preferably 4x)

3) remote play feature for windows (jk. thanks pspdisp)

4) allow 3rd party stuff

5) power saver similar to Hold+

6) MUCH longer battery (gaming online for 5 hours on constant 333mhz)

7) an official youtube app!

2 ms duo slots

9) camera (at least 3 megapixel with night-vision)

10) of course... 2 analog sticks.

Main things I would look for in a PSP2 are,
1. Better Screen for outdoor play & Better Graphics
2. Better battery life
3. Some sort of screen cover (like a NDS/clamshell design)
4. Concentrate on bringing ALOT of games out preferably quality games instead of blaming piracy.. remember NDS has alot of piracy too
5. Accelometer & Gyro & touch screen (with Stylus option for RTS games)
6. Force Feedback (would be NICE)
7. 3d would be nice, but not necessary (if so, then allow an on/off option)

how come would you think Sony are going to properly add all these features whereas they couldn't even implement a decent d-pad on the current PSP even after numerous hardware revisions? Many gamers were so much disappionted and frustrated by that sturdy d-pad, making fighting games like SFA3 Max and others unplayable. I mean, PSP2 will surely be a new high-tech piece of electronic device, redefining the standards once again like PSP has done back in 2004, but, i think the priority should be given to gaming features over anything else. If Sony succeeds to deliver a solid and comfortable portable gaming device while adding good entertaining and connectivity alternatives, it's definitely going to find its way into gamers pockets, and Sony would definitely find its way into your wallet, you know on your other pocket. Because, in contrast to what Apple (wanna) believe(s), people who buy PSP and DS are not the same who buy iPhone.

... is that controls are very unresponsive because the d-pad isn't raised enough out of PSP's faceplate, which makes even quarter-circle motion moves a real pain in the a** to pull off. Not to mention Shoryuken-like moves... If you're fond of fighting games, you'll certainly get what I mean.

The reason the psp never really took off was because of piracy... Developers didnt want to games for the psp because of how easy it was to pirate games on the psp. Sadly to say piracy has its downsides lol

I wouldn't buy a PSP I can't install a custom firmware anyway, I was lucky to get a 2000 model when I bought mine.

With a custom firmware to install, people would at least buy the console, now without it, I don't know, it's just frustrating to buy one, it's kinda killing their market. Of course, consumers who'd buy UMDs would still buy, but are there enough of them?

Hey there is a Arm9 Processor thats at 1ghz that only uses 1 watt of power. If they use that in the psp2 there power problems would be solved. Not to mention powerfull.

Looking back at Sony's previous models.
PSP slim didn't really have anything special except it weight less. PSP 3000 better screen? PSP go take out UMD and change memory stick to a more expensive one as if the pro due didn't cost enough.
PSP2 could make it or break it. This better wow everyone without making them pay more than what it will ever deserve.

lol wow. IF any of you remember Nintendo isn't worried about $ony anymore since (no matter how many of you bought it and wont admit you wasted money on it) the Go failed. i will admit the go had some really good features but.....NO UMD, lets not forget that half of the psp games arent even available for DL. Even with the PSP2, Nintendo still wont even worry and $ony knows that it would just be for those few remaining fans.

About those piracy phoebics....just look how long it took us to get KHBBS to work and the rest of the 6.20 games. Their prices already went down by the time we were finally able to play them. Sure theres piracy on the NDS, but theres piracy everywhere so who gives a F$@%. Just deal with it because it will never end.

my current stand is that the only way $ony can come back (when i mean come back i mean get back into 2nd place as aperson2 said) is if they release a PSP with in between PS2 and PS3 graphics and finally release PS2 Downloadable games. the PS3 slim desperately needs that and that would make the PSP worth more. other than that....Nintendo all the way. Nintendo Dominated E3. I think it was mostly the 3DS tho
