pick up! your PSP's ringing... - Image 1Apparently, the rumor that Sony Ericcson is working on a PSP phone stuck like glue to some people. And they are seriously considering the limitless possibilities that this project may bring forth to the industry.

The folks at Pocket Gamer have already created a list of the things they would want to have in the PSP phone. It's a pretty concise list, actually. First up, they'd want it to be a slider, similar to the W850i model. Then, they want to have landscape gaming in it, complete with shoulder buttons and 3D support for that extra push against the new N-gage phones.

Of course, what's the point of having a PSP Phone if it can't be connected to the PSP or the PS3, right? Yep, that's on the wish list, too. And last item on the list, they would want to have those nifty media applications, such as a camera, an MP3 player application, and video player functions. "Oh, and it would need to be 3G, please," they stress.

Hmmm... a pretty lofty wish list. Then again, wishing is for free so why not go lavish on it, eh? Still no confirmation from Sony about this rumor but Kotaku reports that they managed to squeeze in the question to the folks at SCEA, and they got the usual "no comment" template response. However, John Koller, the PSP's senior marketing manager, did say that they "are always evaluating new technology and listening to what their consumers want."

... Actually I want this as a firmwareupdate for the PSP! Nice for a phone, but we ALREADY HAVE THE HARDWARE, so why dont integrate this? People buy style, see apple, so Sony, get your s''' together and go for it!

» Forget cell phone functionality

I like the idea of a PSP phone, but come now, we're not going to get homebrew on such a device for quite some time, if at all.

Seriously Sony, leave the phone for the next-gen console, I don't need two PSPs. (But I promise to buy the next gen PSP and pay a little more for that cell phone feature) But please, do give us Skype and allow us to have video chat with it.

That would be worth more to me than any cell phone. I would be able to use it EVERYWHERE at my university's campus as there's wifi everywhere.

» Sony don't be a dumbass

Do what nintendo does and just make a phone adaptor you idiots! God damn. You're going to just screw over a bunch of loyal psp users because you want to make a new version that can be used as a phone? How dumb is that. Nokia proved that was a dumb idea. Who wants to have their game interrupted by some phone call? wtf

» a theory...

I believe I read something a while back were in Sony was asking N-gage's creators some Q's. What if the next version of the PSP was like an N-gage? Where as they can always control firmware by just updating through the phone system. Not to mention detect what software you would happen to have. I don't think they'll drop the UMD system, as to much money has been invested into the format already. As cameras have already been integrated into the accessories lineup, and since cameras are very common on cell phones, it will most likely have one built in(maybe even gps if it proves successful in the states). Bluetooth integrated maybe. It might look like that little side held messenger phone of sony's (myko? sp?) with the little side slide keyboard and such. Pro duo prices are going down, and they may choose to keep it, or go with the NAND memory versions, or maybe both. Sony already has both feet up the ass of the phone and gaming industry, this is natural evolution...

Just a theory.

» here's my wishlist...

i wish all you brain dead people out there that want this ***** can wake up to yourselves. how about sony actually taking better care of the ACTUAL *****ing PSP? it's a GREEEEAAT fkn machine but no one cares because the lack of games (leave alone good ones), the non-exsistent marketing in australia and sony ruining the umd thing. seriously whoever was responsible for green lighting ***** like top gun on umd should be shot. WHO THE FRIG WANTS TOP GUN ON UMD????

chili con carnage was released here not long ago, and you wouldn't know it unless you sought the game out for yourself! a great little game for the psp, perfect for 'pick up and play' gaming and correct me if i'm wrong but isn't that what the psp is for, for alot of people? i mean the big game they hyped at psp launch was pursuit force ('ooh pick up and play blah blah, made just for psp gaming' etc) and this actually gets the mechanics of that game right and the general psp population wouldn't even know. get your act together sony! market the good games better, stop letting the crap games get made, and support your current consumer base. i STILL sit there on a train and can't believe i'm playing such a kick arse handheld device. (despite what u may have thought of the game, TOMB RAIDER on the train!!!??? WOW- this on a handheld? great stuff)

in short...support your product better sony, the psp deserves better, and NIX this stupid psp phone malarkey.

» has spoken

personally the Ngage was actual balls but a simple voice over IP program for psp would be nice enough for voice communication console to console.

bah, i'm totally uninterested in this. most people already have a phone. it would just make the PSP more expensive.

» what if...

I believe that it wouldn't be to hard to put it in a firmware update, if I could get it as an ekstra app like the GPS or Camera I would probably buy it. You remember the mic. in soccom? What if they did something like that? And just put some box somwhere on the wire to put your simcard (or maybe make an adapter for the memory card slot, don't know if that's possble, and it would probably be annoying to always switch between sim card and mem stick, but I'm just thinking. Anyway, if they put it in a FW update they could just let you write messages the same way as you write everything else with PSP and the cell phone itself would be kind of like a handsfree. This wouldn't be interesting for everyone, but I would probably buy it, if it's going to be another console I'm not so sure, but I would love the oportunity to use my PSP as a phone to, a bit big, but I usually carry it around everywhere anyway... If they should make it a new console they must make the screen smaller so it will be more like the size of a cell phone, how they are going to let u use the UMD's then I don't know...

Hm... Maybe that could have been a homebrew app? Use the soccom mic. as a phone... Oh... just remembered the problem with sim card...

» ?

well including VOIP on the psp will just need a firmware/software update but a cell phone function will need a GSM type connection that the psp does not have. VOIP will use your WiFi connection, but a cell phone needs GSM/sim card type thing to work

» yeah real cool

» Anyone know how hard tapping the audio buffer would be?

I figure the audio coming from the mic has to be buffered, or stored 'somewhere' in the PSP. This would really be the holy grail of PSP hacking. Figuring out how to redirect the buffered audio out over wifi, back to your trusty home computer. Once you've got the audio streaming back to your PC, there's any number of ways you could set your machine up to pipe it out over your home phone line. (use PSP-VNC to remotely operate your PCs phone-dialer program).

Hell, even if I had to buy Socom to make this work, it'd be worth it. Maybe someone could set up a 'altered' socom server to act as a mini phone company???

So what do you do normally when your playing a game and get a phone call? Finish up your game and call them back?

» Nice

This is a sweet idea! However, I think it would be better if this came with a redesigned PSP with dual analog, two more triggers, and have the phone as an optional sim card add-on function, which includes premium mobile broadband functionality. All the PSP really needs is mobile broadband. That way, I could combine use the PSP with online gaming, web browsing, cell talk, skype, PS3 remote access functionality, or location free tv anywhere I go, no matter where I am. Combining PSP with the PS3 is cool, because then I can access any of the media files on the huge PS3 hard drive anywhere I go! I can access my 30 gigs of music, and 20 gigs of movies anywhere I go on the road thanks to mobile broadband access! Mobile PSP access is a great idea, and the more communication service providers jump on this, the lower the price goes. Combined with a bluetooth earpiece, and a slide out QWERTY keypad would make the PSP unstoppable!

» PSP Phone?

Lame idea, I have pretty much every playstation device there is and I know for a fact that the PSP Phone will be a complete waste of money. The PSP was a waste of money.. and theres only one half decent game which I think is Metal Gear Solid. People who have a PSP and a Cell/Mobile Phone will have no use for this PSP Phone idea.

I'd rather see an official Sony update for the PSP that would make it at least worth the cash. I wouldn't think that will be out any time soon, so why think a new PSP will be out sooner?
