PSP OFW 6.30 adds Neo Geo and PCEngine folders to XMB

The PSP got a new firmware update earlier today, and while many of you may not be too keen on making the jump to the next version, there are those who already have, and they found two interesting new folders on the XMB.

pspxmb

The two empty folders are simply named PCEngine and Neo Geo. For those unfamiliar with them, PCEngine, also known as TurboGrafx-16, and Neo Geo were popular gaming systems back in the day. Now that those two have game folders in the PSP, Sony could be planning to revive the old titles of years past.

What say you?

Hmmm not sure why they are moving this direction....For those that have CFW running this is nothing new as they could already play them both via emulators... for those that can't use CFW well then its a nice little perk... little being the key word here

Well, doesn't really matter. I doubt that we'll see a new custom firmware based on something newer than 5.50 this year.

That wouldn't surprise me. The key problem with the current psp is that it lacks the hardware to add anything worthwhile. Until they release a new psp with something other that a 333mhz cpu, they can't add much other than older games, psp's current games are as high as the graphics are going to get. The current psp's cpu and ram are long obsolete.

Which is why the PSP is falling down a mountain of failure. I thought Peace Walker would help revive it for a little while, but it's not good enough to bring the PSP back to it's former glory. I'm disappointed, I really would've liked to see a PSP2 or some other hardware revision that actually met the price tag of $200 instead of adding a $5 add-on like a mic or brighter screen (both of which were already around when the PSP first came out - skype headphones and homebrew apps to brighten the screen). I'm thinking of defecting to the 3DS when it arrives... the PSP is dead for me and just isn't worth paying attention to anymore... at least until the Sony execs smarten the f*** up and actually give us what we want.

Genius much?? It's nice and all, but does it actually play the games the brewing community has managed to put on the PSP?

reason why psp went downhill already is because of hackers who ruined their product thats why there are no more new releases for it. Companies dont want their games getting ruined and get the fun sucked out of it. example: starwars battlefront, MGSPO, medal of honor. these great games got hackers running all over it. wondering why there will never be a new playstation after ps3? or wont be a new xbox for a long time? HACKERS

i really thought that when sony was introducing psp minis and applications that they were gonna have the homebrew community and chance to develop programs just like android allows it users to do...maybe if they did that they would be better ahead in the hardware race.

would be kool if there nxt gen model could run android...just a thought

Patches both the Patapon 2 Exploit(HBL) and the use of Datel's Action Replay(cheat tool for all OFW up to 6.20) What a huge fail Sony!!! Seems like the QJ.NET writers loves this new firmware... They keep talking about all these so called wonderful added features but keep forgetting to mention the patches that were made.

I wonder QJ.NET, why do you even have homebrew applications and such on your site but won't even warn the psp community about the new security in this firmware?

Lets see, you could be glorifying this huge piece of shit so everyone updates then about a week latter the headlines will be something like: "Wait! 6.30 patches recent Patapon 2 Exploit" Damn, Sorry we hyped you all up to update. Your loss....

because its obvious and there is no reason to say something to the people that do run the homebrew and already know that almost ever update has some kind of security patch in it for the psp

Because they are giving us NEWS, they aren't saying that you must update.
And if you own a PSP for some time, you'd know that updating your firmware is not a smart move.

An interesting addition. Let's hope it develops into what it appears. However, I'm sticking with 6.20 on my PSPgo for the time being. No way I'm giving up HBL for just a couple of folders!

LOL...Wow. Sony (little by little) is going in the right direction and now people are STILL complaining. Of course it couldn't be the whole homebrew package (IE. Nintendo emu and sh*t) but really? At least it's getting somewhere.

"More ripoffs of the brewing community? Sony's just running out of ideas aren't they?"

So it's all from the brewing community? Really? Last time i heard, i thought neo geo was a console of it's own. Didn't know homebrew made it....

"Hmmm not sure why they are moving this direction....For those that have CFW running this is nothing new as they could already play them both via emulators... for those that can't use CFW well then its a nice little perk... little being the key word here"

Well.. if it's not anything new to you then don't ask for new CFW with OFW features...

yes it is console on it own but homebrew community unlock the decyrption key to make it work on psp and sony stole it away just like that without any credit....

Anybody. It's more likely they PAID for the rights to have NeoGeo games on it's handheld. You actually think they just repackaged a homebrew app without NeoGeo's permission? You can't be that...aw forget it.

They will probably sell the games for very high prices and it's obvious that you can't play roms, that would mean that Sony is condoning piracy.

$ony is trying(or wanting) to give all you "homebrew lovers" the emulators you so desperately require. But at this time cannot fully indulge you because they have not reached an agreeable decision with Nintendo(and possibly others) concerning the rights to first party(Nintendo) and 3rd party (Sega and others) games. I mean ,seriously contracts are everything people.

If Sony wants to end piracy (in a way)They should contract the homebrew makers and a have like a android market and sell em for 0.99-9.99

couldnt agree more, they should make it like the android market so the great members of the home brew community get recognize and possibly make a lil money for their time and effort

well my PSP is a 3000 XUS (JP Model) so for my 6.30 update, it doesn't have that. but, for the US ones its because in Japan right now they have NeoGeo and PCEngine games for sale on the PSN store. Sony could be planning to bring them to the USA and maybe even EU.

# Sony starting to think95200Naruto 2010-07-02 15:00
Hmm, what I think this is is an attempt to try to bring more people using cfw back to official firmware and if they go where I think they are going, which is to add support for homebrew and homebrew plugins, this may work. If sony starts or in this case keeps looking in the direction of what cfw has to offer for people, we may indeed see a colaberation of custom and official firmware. For Example: 10.00 DAX
or
10.00 GEN v1
Note that these are just possibilities but it may indeed happen.
The only one thing people would still want cfw for psp if they add every thing I stated above would be cso/iso support, and obviously this will be mainly piraters and people who use it because they loose the umds. But Sony can add cso/iso support too. If they did they'd most likely put something in the cso/iso that detects wether the game had been ripped from the software Sony would create for ripping umds and if it wasn't the right software or program, it would auto delete or cause the cso/iso to be unusable. Just a thought.
