Homebrew coder dan369 is back to release a new version of PSP Mario - The New Worlds, an attempt to clone Super Mario Bros. for the PlayStation Portable. Although the latest update only contains one playable level, the dev reminds everyone that this is just a tech demo mainly to get feedback from the community.

Developer's note:

Basically the game itself is a tech demo, it isn't no full Mario experience with loads of levels, for a level count there is still only 1 level in this game. I've released this mainly to get feedback, what people like/don't like, improvements & what should be added next? The game is a step above v0.01, with a lot of improvements, the full list is underneath:

  • Everything from Version 0.01
  • Collision between enemies
  • Mini-Mario Logic implanted into the game (i.e you can't smash the brick blocks!)
  • Full Green Koopa A.I including Idle state, Shell state.
  • Coins have been added, stand alone coins ain't 100% done yet.
  • Coin Blocks Have been added, note: that so far coin blocks are only in '?' blocks, there isn't any hidden coins in any of the Brick Blocks but I'll add that soon
  • Red Koopas are also added into the game, but the A.I isn't 100% (Red koopas don't fall off ledges, but that's all that needs to be done with them)
  • Added a few more of the classic sound effects like the Coin, Kick etc. (i can't seem to find the Brick block one, where you as little mario hear the 'thund' sound )
  • Had to re-do the map format, this means that previous created maps won't work, I'll release the updated editor during the week sometime.
  • (Even though you don't see this, i have the level system up & running, which will switch you from level to level)
  • Fixed a bug with Mario dying (where he'd just keep falling & falling)
  • A lot of other minor fixes which i honestly can't remember, its been so long

What About The Future?
The future is very bright for this game, probably the next update will be sometime around spring when i hope to enter the NeoFlash Compo for the first time, but immediate plans would be:

  • Finish Red Koopas & Stand Alone coins
  • Add Invisible blocks
  • Add coins into special Brick Blocks
  • More levels (Defiantly!)
  • Finish off Level system (needs some touching up even though the base is their)
  • Start on Big Mario additions

when u kill and an enemy and hes still dying or w/e it lags a tad bit. and when the shells are moving it laggs a little too.

and when you try to go back, the screen locks(like it should) but mario can still walk far as hell OFF the screen(shouldnt be) otherwise pretty good.

I don't think it would be easy for him to do a New Super Mario PSP version.

But don't worry, Yoshihiro was working in a Nintendo DS emu for PSP called DSONPSP. ... maybe he will continue it's developement some day, and luckly we'll be able to play New Super Mario Bros on PSP.

Why the hell do homebrew devs always throw away their time and talent for something that isnt really necessary and might actually get shut down by legal problems due to copyright? I mean...if youre a talented programmer why do you try to make a Super Mario Bros Port? Especially on a system that's capable of emulating the original just fine... Why don't these people make something original? Something they can really call their own? Something that's interesting because people havent played that before?

I mean think for example about that Chrono Trigger Remake Project. That looked pretty nice and there was some hard work going into that project. But eventually Square made them stop developing it so it was all a waste. All for nothing.
So why didn't they make something original with all their talent? If they lack the ideas... look on the internet and you'll find plenty off people with good ideas that can't make them into a game because they dont have any programming skills.

There's thousands ideas, half of them ain't practical at all. But there is also the issue of gfx, sounds etc. Yes there are websites for those types of people but to find someone who is on your wave length (ie. you get along, he understands what your trying to do, you've seen his abilities & impressed with him/her?) is extremely hard. I have plenty ideas for my own games and im pretty sure i have the ability to make them as well, but all those other things like sprites, backgrounds, sounds, background music etc. those are the things i had trouble with, compare that with the availability of mario sprites/sound effects/music, as you see its a lot easier.
Also no legal issues for any other mario clone has come up in the past that im aware of, theres loads of clones, copyrighted sprites used in a vast amount of games. So the legal issue for me isn't present or in better words its very unlikely of any legal issue.
That why i created this. + the fact i thought it would be cool :P

Absolutely roflolmaomfg. I've never understood why people who can program do stuff like this. The Mario concept has to be finely done, so much so that nobody other than Nintendo can create a good Mario platform game (both independent and commercial devs fail at this).
It's easy to find an artist. Or better still just find an art style that you can work in. Graphics don't need to be good to have a great game. There are many pixel artist forums with members who are more than willing to get their art out there...

One thing:
the video was recorded using RemoteJoyLite, it records the video @30 fps.

dan @ that's not the only speed which is recordable.

15-30-60 around these, simply config.

See this vid -> http://tinypic.com/r/2rxi1ck/4 It was recorded while RemoteJoy was running (recording).

using nes or even snes versions is a good idea too. adding new playable characters from different games like final fantasy, mgs, gow, resident evil, pokemon, naruto, etc. in a chibi kind of way. who knows, it could be fun. :D xD

No it wouldn't. Adding more characters doesn't make a game fun when the game mechanics are locked like this game is. More does not mean better. Even in the newest Mario game they only have 3 playable characters in order to keep the experience solid and consistent.
