Guess who's back in the homebrew scene? (well, sort off..) Red Squirrel has released D2-D3 Switcher, a handy homebrew application that allows you to switch between custom firmware 5.50 GEN-D2 and GEN-D3, easily.

Developer's note:

D2-D3 Switcher is a simple PSP homebrew to switch easily from CF 5.50GEN-D3 to -D2 and viceversa. It works changing only the peagasus.prx in Flash0. Returning to D2 (using the D2's peagasus.prx) you will can use those savedatas that appear corrupted in D3 or play those games that have issues with D3 (such as Jak and Daxter, Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker, etc...). But remember to come back to D3 when you want to play those modern games that require it.

Red Squirrel said that he only made this a through a request from a site, so hes not actually back in the scene.

I didn't really notice the benefits lost in D3 that D2 had. Perhaps this can be further-built to switch to M33? Then there wouldn't be anything else needed except the obvious one-time solidified stable 6.20 CFW that solved all these issues (not complaining, just making the obvious more obvious). Way to go Red Squirrel!

this would have come in handy a few weeks back but someone patched MGS for D3 playing it now.

Personally I think Peacewalker is the kind of game you buy. It shows Konami that there was a point to making it. It's also so full of quality that every single developer involved deserves money.

You actually sicken me. You're the scum of the gaming world.

franchises like metal gear can rack up enough purchases to keep the company and kojima going.

what you need to worry about is small gaming companies that really really make interesting stuff.

look at clover studios: they made
okami (amaziing nique graphical style)
godhand (unique gameplay style, funny)
Viewtifull joe (original take on 2d)

These are high quality games...well guess what the studio was disbanded and okami is still property of capcom. we'll never see that stuff again.

you know tri ace? before they were called tri ace they made tales of phantasia, which is the best game in the series and is still being remade to this day (5th remake on the way)
they were sacked!
Nowadays they make games such as valkyrie profile, end of eternity, radiata stories. all VERY original games, i advise you to look at Valkyrie 1 especially which is so complicated it scares off most players cause they're not sure what to do.

vanilla studios? you know em? they've been forced to the wii because little people played their amazing game odin sphere which is the pinnacle of 2d gaming graphics and originality.
they've release muramasa on the wii now. check out that shit. hell check out all those games i mentioned and see that they're more than just another 3rd/1st person shooter.

mgpw is not just another 1st/3rd person shooter, and it is a good game, original, has lotsa content. worth buying! but if you do have to spend your money. support the industry by buying games that are original rather than the mainstream stuff that keeps getting rehashed (halo hurr, generic action game 5 durr, and don't get me started on those mmorpgs.

casuals spend money on the main stream games. so we gamers must spend money on original stuff cause else, in ten years we'll still be playing halo 6, cod11mw4, and linear fantasy 18.

pirate the mainstream, buy the original stream

Good Point!

...to add, "same applies to the American Music Industry!"

A fairly good point, but I'm not sure I entirely agree. I haven't played most of the games you listed (loved Viewtiful Joe and Okami, though), but most of the time when I hear about one of these underrated games that "you have just GOT to play," I'll try it out and find that it's got a few unique and fun quirks, but lacks overall polish. Not always the case, of course, but it seems like the mainstream AAA titles tend to be more polished.

That's not to say that they're without their faults, of course. I haven't played Halo 3 or any of the later ones, but I thought Halo 2 was a two steps forward one step back kind of thing (it was mostly better than Halo but a lot of what they changed was for the worse). The Final Fantasy series has been going downhill lately too. I can't say that for sure because I haven't finished 12 or 13--I got bored after a couple days on each.

It is a shame that those games you listed didn't get more play, though. It would have been interesting to see how the sequels came out and if the rough edges got smoothed out.

I do agree that Peace Walker (sod it, all games you actually want to play) should be bought.

That said, I have a heaving shelf of PSP UMD's, but I like to play using ISO to save battery life and save me lugging 40+ UMD's around.

It's for this reason I'm glad that Disgaea Infinite works on D3, but I love the box art and want to make sure Nippon Ichi continues to bring oddly unique titles to PSP.

How about they make a good working CFW. Where is 620GEN? Oh, THEY CANT make it so they keep making stupid addons for 550GEN.

If you'd have done any research into 6.xx firmware, you would probably have read multiple times that 6.xx OFW removes functionality found in the 5.xx kernel that is required by most homebrew. THAT is why we haven't seen a legitimate 6.xx CFW yet.

Learn the facts, or go fanboy elsewhere.

there is already a fix available, and its easier to use since you can stay on D3 with the fix applied

I've never had issues with my Savedata or any of my games from upgrading from D2 to D3. The people who have problems just don't how to operate their PSP properly. Some people get all frustrated and all like "OMG My psp haz da bricks cuz a plugin do not work!" This makes Team GENyUS look as if their CFWs are crappy. I'm not a fanboy of theirs but it puts them in a bad position.

Its like when most of these n00bs on Qj. A mod posts some news, lets take Glenn for example, and Glenn makes a typo. Everyone jumps on his ass and starts saying crap like "learn how to spell!" and all that is just bullshit. Everyone just likes shitting on everyone elses work, GROW THE FUCK UP!

Anyways, nice app for those who can't get their Savedata working.

im not an english major, nor do i have perfect grammar. the only writer here who i seem to have an issue with again and again is mabie A. and that is because she leaves out whole words, misleads the info and on most of her articles from day to day you can spot them very easily.. now is it childish to expect her as a PAID writer to write properly? i do not think so,

LOL, thats why I used Glenn as an example. She would've been a bad example to use lol. If its something like leaving out words or misleading all the time, then thats a whole different story.

I'm not picking on you either, it was just a general statement.

Pretty spiffy idea.

Are there many more games that prefer D2 to D3 other than mgs?

I've never had this problem because I have no interest in dew walker (other than trashing on it of course ;-) ).

Pretty slick idea though for people who either dont want to patch their dew walker tv show or for other games (?) that need it.

Buy the damn game and yall noobs aint gatta worry about brickin shitt.
To those who did buy their games, aint nothing changed. You still need to have a second psp that stays on CFW!

Great work Red squirrel! Just ignore the noobs that had their friends hack their psp's and now they dont know how to do shitt on them.

Not everybody who's running cfw is a pirate (though I'm sure it's a lot more than admit it--I admit it though: Aarg!). You can't run the umd version of the game on cfw, so you still have to rip it and patch it.

I actually kind of like how cfw works these days. It's complicated enough that you can't simply have your psp modded and then pirate freely--you have to be able to keep up with the scene and update your firmware or plugins. That alone severely limits the number of people who can be pirates.
