PSP dev kit on eBay? What the...

We know the homebrew scene just loves to push the PSP to the limit, to show what they and Sony's little machine can do. Still, there's pushing, and there's pushing, especially if the brewer in question has THIS sitting in his bedroom.

WHAT THE --

The two questions on our minds are (1) is this really for real, and (2) if it is real, where in creation did emceemoney get a PSP development kit to auction on eBay? Not like the guy's a prolific eBayer, even with a 100% feedback rating. We're even not going to make the comment that the current bid as of this posting is US$ 329.00.

If you were to get hold of this devkit, what would you do with it? What games out of your imagination could you conjure up in the darkness of your development lab/bedroom? (Although somehow, a pro-level UMD of Ponies and Kittens just made us... have kittens). Yeah, it's gonna be a somewhat steep learning curve to learn how this thing works, but that's the price of playing the big boys' game. That and whatever the final bid for this kit will be.

(This is, of course, presuming that this is a legit deal to begin with.)

Update:
Cope2 sent us a tip that eBay has removed the PSP dev kit we featured in this post.

» not so much a DevKit as it is a Test Kit

We have these at work and we just use them for testing. You burn the games on DVD and run them on a psp that is connected to the box. It is able to run UMD's but sadly no homebrew, in fact you can not even access the memory stick from the XMB interface other then the save menu.

I'm actually the seller of this item. I came on here to try and find out some more information about the devkit. I didn't say I was the owner before because I wanted to know what everyone thought about it. IT IS NOT STOLEN! It is not a scam either. I manage a buy/sell shop in Oregon. When this first came into my store I spent 4 hours on the phone with Sony. They had no information they were willing to part with about this devkit because they don't want the general public to have them. This was purchased legally through Sony Manufacturing in Eugene Oregon from one of its former employee's after the plant shut down. He had no use for it. I tried to give it back to Sony but they wouldn't claim it. It was run through our local PD and our County PD. It is not stolen. For some reason Ebay shut the auction down. I need to sell this thing because I have no use for it either. It has been tested and works fine. If anyone is interested in please PM me. The last offer I got was for $700 but I think it may be worth more. My former employee was posting in the other thread and got it locked so I had to start a new one. Thanks

Why don't you donate it to people like Dark Alex and maybe we'll end up seeing the true potential of a psp!!

by donate - 2006-12-05 17:56
» donate!

yer it should be donated to dark alex! imagine how awsum that would be he could make like downgrade eboots for all firmwares! so wen sony comes out with a new firmware we could downgrade of he could make an eboot for like 3.02se so if u had upgraded for whatever reason then u could just run the eboot and upgrade for homebrew goodess!!!

» erm, questionable.

I dont fully believe you. I work for a game studio and sony would demand that it be returned.

Licensing contracts state that hw is not owned by the studio or company who purchases it. You purchase a license to barrow it and have no right to resale it.

If you were on the phone with sony they would have demanded the unit returned and would threaten legal action if you dont comply.

» About the sony plant in Springfield Oregon

There never was a Sony plant in Eugene, it was in Springfield. And it only pressed and packaged music CDs and PS1 games. It never produced PS2 games, let alone PSP ones.

Devkits? HA! The only PS1s then eve had were the ones that were used in store displays with the TV and 2 controllers.

To make UMDs, you have to send the code to $ony since they're the only ones who can make them. I'm sure you need to buy a hundred thousand or so.

by Bleh - 2006-12-06 01:38
» ILLEGAL

Everything sounds suspicious about this. Sony would never refuse the kit if it somehow fell into someone's hands, and secondly, developers (including Sony employees) do not own the kits - they license the usage of them, they have absolutely no authority to sell or re-license them (technically publishers and developers can permit the usage of them to other developers, however). It is true, however, that Sony doesn't really reclaim the kits when development generations are over. We've got handfuls of old PS kits that just collect dust. But Sony can technically can call up one day and say "give em back", and we'd have to comply.

You are a jacka$$. This happened to me on one of my PS3's that I sold. I ended up getting all of my money back from eBay so the seller would NOT have to pay a lot for eBay fees, it's just a hassle. People like you should not be allowed to use eBay.

by Hmm - 2006-12-06 05:06
» You sound real

your story sounds real but that factory may only make ps1 games but that dont mean that theres not gonna be a devkit there does it also sony woud be happy to put 1 mil in other wise there will be a devkit in the hands of a homebrew then theres gonna be some sort of downgrader out to downgrade any firmware via UMD but yea writ a letter to sony before complaining about my psp being bricked and at the end i asked where to but umds (they said 100,000 min) but they said they werent willing to release any more info unless i had a game developers lisence (whats that)

but that guy is selling on the internet not ebay (i know its on the internet but you know what i mean) so if sony whants to buy it of him they cant cos he can say no (like hes gonna if they offer him 1 mil

here's what you can do with it.

by blazeking - 2006-12-06 06:38
» maybe....

That dev kit is for an older model PSP if they don't want it back. The PS3 had THREE DIFFERENT dev kits. They don't want it back because it's really of no use to them. I'm on the Playstation G.A.P. (blazeking2)

o yeah, off topic BTW. A 2.80 downgrader has been made but it is under extreme testing (making sure it won't brick a psp)by 0okm.

by Some Highschool Smart-guy - 2006-12-06 08:06
» Freakin Genious

I wonder... Can this published signed eboots? If it can, Someone could make a signed eboot for 2.80-3.02 that can "Update" it with 1.50 PSAR's. Since it's signed, It'll just basically be a 1.50 update eboot renamed to 3.04 and signed to run on any psp (< 3.04 of course... not that there is one).

If the kit can't make eboots (just UMD's). D_A could probably make a UMD iso that mounts/runs in devhook on one PSP and "GameShares" a signed downgrader "Game Demo" eboot to the PSP being downgraded.

Just my thoughts.

The kit cannot publish signed eboots, nor does it make UMDs for that matter. Given what we know about the PSP hardware and the tools available publically, this kit is just about useless to non-developers.

its not actually a dev kit but a psp that can boot from dvds apparently to save buring umds, u get the picture. (thats what the box is next to it)its not actually a dev kit. but a test kit, you cant even access anything else on the xmb other than game -> umd and savegame manager

by dvd - 2006-12-06 16:53
» dvd media

The dev kit can play games on umds or cds and dvds.

The devs have to send the data to sony for them to put it on umds.

by Blazeking - 2006-12-07 02:26
» dev kit, test kit.....

Lets clear this up right now. That's NOT all the pieces to a dev kit. Like I mentioned b4, PS3 had THREE dev kits. Basically a dev kit is a developer model of the console that looks NOTHING like the market version. That box in the picture not the "magic machine" that you can power on and hack a PSP. BTW you won't get ANYWHERE with it. You would need more than that kit. Second, pspizzle is right about it only accessing GAME UMD and Savegame manager and booting from DVDs. Why??? There are blank UMDs and writers on the market but do you know how much it costs???? That's why the only UMDs you see are from Sony and Movie companys and they're about to abandon the format if sony doesn't commercialize UMDs like CD-r and DVD-r. Besides, This is a PSP DEV KIT:

http://img164.exs.cx/img164/1097/pspdebug42hf.jpg

http://img164.exs.cx/img164/2796/pspdebug30sv.jpg

http://img164.exs.cx/img164/3673/pspdebug27mg.jpg

I'll show the PS3 dev kit later......

by blazeking - 2006-12-07 02:33
» ^

forgot to add something. It's the part of the dev kit called a debugger console, basically it runs PSP firmware on the inside. You CAN extract any data but it doesn't make eboots. It's the desktop computer version of the PSP.
