PSP before and after: Famitsu compares PSP Slim to old PSP |

We've heard about the reported differences between the old PSP and the PSP Slim, such as battery life, color palette, and of course, the size. However, it would be better if we got a chance to actually place the two together, side by side, and see for ourselves how they measure up against each other.Famitsu did a favor for all us by making a comparison of the two, and the gracious folks at Japan Gaming Guide managed to scan the related magazine pages for everybody's perusal. Check out how each of them scored: PSP Slim weighed a whopping 33% less compared to the classic PSP, and is also smaller both in height and width.
We can also see that the bulky ends at the back of the PSP classic were flattened in its slimmer incarnation, and that the eject mechanism was also ditched as well, opting to include a simpler "stick-the-UMD-inside" method of loading UMDs.
So far the PSP Slim is looking better and better, with the idea of holding a lighter PSP for extended play becoming more and more appealing. We'll have more updates on the PSP slim for you as we get them.

loveee the psp!!!!!!!
I'll stick with my original psp.
It mustve bn a complicated decisn 4 Sony but they kept it the same in order to not let us old owners feel left out

looks tempting but the only feature I would care about would be the tv out function. bad news is is that you would have to buy all new accessories for this thing cause it would be two small for the older ones.
I can see no compelling reason to get one of these if you already own an original PSP. It's very likely that Sony will change the very nature of the hardware itself, which brings hackers back to square one. It may even make homebrew impossible. We don't know for sure, of course, but I'm expecting the worst.
Besides, it's only marginally smaller than it's old counterpart, memory sticks are becoming cheaper by the day, and the TV out feature is already available through various peripherals. This is looking more and more like an obvious attempt by Sony to damage the homebrew community.
Unless it can be downgraded. Sony probably won't let it slip on this one though..

In the article on the site, it says a revised D-pad. It looks the same to me. Also, on my PSP, the speakers are at the bottom underneath and not on the front. On the front, the whole are just to like clip something on but everyone seems to be saying different.
Also, is it just me or does the new one look more cheap and easier to break. Like the UMD drive and mem stickholder.
I'm going to get a redisigned PSP. Why? Because the one I have now is about to spontaneously combust I've used it so much. The redesign is a piece of crap, people. We all know it is--don't try to hide it. Yeah they didn't add any amazing new features...we can all get over that. But 19% slimmer?! 33% less weight? The exact utter same face design? From the pictures, it doesn't look like they improved the plastic on the analog stick, either. This isn't a redesign-- it's a bad touch up. Compare the DS and the DS lite-- that's some serious weight loss, and better all around, yet there were no new features added at all, were there? While Sony may suck, I have (had) enough confidence in their design team to at least come up with something comparable to that. Jack Tretton compared the PSP to the Walkman redesign-wise, and here's a message for him-- the PSP is not a $20 music player. It is a $200 portable gaming system. And until Sony starts to treat the PSP as such, when it is obvious they haven't been, this is all we're going to get.
screw the new one, old school rocks. and it's already small enough...
the current psp is fine. its not like its too heavy to hold. its sized perfectly. using a redesigned psp may take our hands some getting used to. since it doesnt really do anything special id consider it a waste of money. keep you old homebrew-capable psp. dont waste your time with one that looks a little different.
does any one know what the price for the psp 2000, im not 100% sure that my pockets are that deep for a new psp, shure it has alot of cool new fetures and upgrades but the old psp works just fine. plus when it comes out the old psps will be really cheap and have homebrew

my psp is falling apart so it need replacing anyway. gonna give in 3 months after its released if its not been hacked by then just gonna get another fat psp on ebay. 2xram is so neccassery psp load times r shockingly bad compared with other things
ill stick with my old PSP without a patched motherboard and having the ability of homebrew.
the core price in the black color will be the same as the original, $169.
Homebrew MAY be possible not at first, And sony MAY
still release a t.v. output plug for the current psp....Hopefully
Whats to keep us from using the internal parts
that allows for Video out on the Slim and connect
it to the PSP-1000? It's just a matter of getting it
connected right and installing the CFW that
supports Video out.
I believe this is totally capable of being used
inside of the PSP-1000's. After all, Video out and
updated 64mb RAM are the only perks to the
new system really... Power efficiency.
The power supply should have been moved like
the audio data connection was so that we could
use that space by installing a second nub.
We have always been able to charge from USB,
this is no new news but they play it off as if it
was impossible before the slim to charge in such
a way.
How... there is going to have to be an adabtor
so that you can voice communicate while playing
on your TV. You can't sacrifice Video over Voice!
I feel a new Head set coming out, or at least
SONY better be planning on addressing this
issue or a 3rd Party adaptor better be around

Not PSP2, bro. That means a little better, more enticing to NEW users, without raising the price. Not something that'll make everyone renounce homebrew and pile up their PSPs and set them on fire. Get over it. (Besides--the PSP lost MORE weight, as it was heavier to begin with.)
yea but you might want to get the new one asap becaseu it will become hackable and have HEN and helloworld and stuff and youll miss out on it and get a slim later one and ask for a downgrader every 30 mins
im also keeping my classic one. cfw beats a slimmer design ANY day.
tv-out is sooo lame, memory and ram and all that crap is basically the same as cfw, and the battery lasts long enough.
psps ARE worthless if its not cfw so stfu.
I like the idea of a faster system, but the tv out is useless to me, im not near a tv when i play my psp no anyways. and nothing is unhackable. give it 3 months after the release and someone will do it. and if i ever break my psp, ill save the money and get a phat one. be a hell of alot cheaper.
I like the heavier psp's because it makes me feel like i own something expensive, the lighter it gets makes me feel like its some cheap plastic toy. I guess it just dephends who you are the only thing that caught my eye was the video port, to the tv.
The USB Charge feature refers to the fact that it can charge JUST via the usb slot, not with a special 2-in-one cable...
It's like other devices, that charge when you plug them into usb, using the USB cable, and its power supply.
As for the video out function, I would think it's a completly new peice of hardware, prolly a small chip, but it's not going to be easy to hack if it's not already in the PSP-100X.
The RAM was probably implemented for a reason, maybe it's used to buffer the whole screen when performing video out functions, or maybe the PS3 needs that extra ram to activate some cool connection function. :/
I'm pretty disappointed they didn't install a new Nub.

I agree with darkness. If you want a sony product that has been made with less parts and redesigned so you can't play your HOMEBREW and isos then go for it. Besides shellin out another $170 for the unit your takin it in the 4ss for thinkin they made this for the people and not to save money on manufacturing and somewhat try to slow down the Homebrew community. The TV out is going to be there biggest upgrade to the new one, but ask your self would you need a PSP if you where around the TV all the time why not just buy a PS3 or an XBOX. Sony is just greedy and not to happy about gettin HACKED all this time. PHAT PSP fo LIFE....
To all of the people saying that they won't get the slim PSP, that's very good - Sony was probably never intending on marketing it to people who already have one in the first place. Instead it's an incentive for those who don't to buy one, that along with various upcoming games. If Sony can make a superior PSP that probably costs less to manufacture (and is being sold for the same amount or less) then all the more power to them; there's no way you can convince me that they would have been better off continuing to sell the original ones.
And to the ones saying that TV out/extra RAM will be a hackable feature.. yeah, in your dreams. The d-pad, on the other hand.. and yes, it's a new d-pad, if you don't see that you must either not be looking at the right shots or you're just blind (look at the one that has the PSP from the side head on, with the d-pad sticking up. It's clearly not the same, it doesn't indent towards the middle like the current one does)

Sony wants the kiddies to beg their mommies for the "better" model, even though they have the same damn thing. I've seen it happen several times with Nintendo's GBA and DS remodels. Little kids are total suckers for them.
On that one other video it had it said it was a simpler umd drive but it looked a bit more complex than the old one. Plus the new one looks kinda flimsey. But who cares? Not me, I got a brand new XBOX 360 :-D
What features could you want to actually add to the psp?The psp already has internet,music, games,photos and video.If its gonna play for a longer time,be slimmer and weigh lesser than people should get it.Being a bigger size doesn't really make it feel more expensive.For example I have a Sidekick 3(yes....i know its not a game system) and it has gotton smaller with every generation.It still feels like I paid $250 for it.The original PSP is type heady.If its gonna be 33% less weight than its good.
im keeping my old one it seems like its better
