PSP 2 in March 2007? |
Ó
Is this the reason why Target pulled the plug on UMD movies? Is this why there hasn't been any price drop for the PSP? si1enc3ed from the QJ forums has posted magazine scans from PlayStation Magazine (not the official one though) with details of how Sony's plans on making "PSP 2." The scans are rather poor and it was hard to decipher what's written, so to spare you the trouble (and save your eyesight), here's the introduction to the whole of the article. Thanks to milkman for the tip!
Rather than follow the traditional five-to-six-year product cycle of videogame consoles, Sony is expected to introduce an upgraded version of the PlayStation Portable in Japan before the end of March 2007. It will not be the "PSP 2" however, as Sony is instead eyeing a page(?) from Apple's iPod strategy and upgrading the existing PSP's specifications while keeping the retail price the same. It is also expected that, as Apple does with its generational iPod rollouts(?) the current PSP configuration will be discontinued when the new model goes on sale.
Sales of the handheld continues to be strong more than a year and a half after it was released in the U.S. It is believed that a combination of strong sales and plans for an enhanced version of the system is what has prevented Sony from dropping the price of the current PSP hardware itself. Instead, it introduced the PSP core pack earlier this year which offered a lower-priced alternative at the expense of previously bundled accessories.
The article in the scans goes into more detail of what changes are going to happen (The features they listed so far were built in 8GB flash memory, new configuration of the UMD slot -where The games will be inserted directly into the system- and a camera. The PSP 2 will be much smaller then the original. There has been no word about there being a second analog stick.) and what won't.
How come I feel like I've opened Pandora's box after writing this article?

--->That didn't come from me. That was in the article. Here's what I said "The scans are rather poor and it was hard to decipher what's written, so to spare you the trouble (and save your eyesight)"
however". yet in your comment, you keep on refering to it as the PSP 2.... wtf.
---->Because as of the moment, there is really nothing to call it yet. The best I compromise I can come up with is to put in quotations marks. But thanks for pointing that out. ^^

id have to wait and see if it can be hacked before i upgrade because although i play the odd game i mostly use it for reading books and comics and surfing the web.
itd be great iof it was hacked , then we could have the homebrew and itd be a lot lighter and thinner, right now its kinda bulky for a pocket.

Sorry for the caps but people are seriously dumb.
Read the article, gonna have the same power, still uses UMDs.

Atleast...i don't think i did...
Oh, and everytime I do give them a news tip I don't get a pinch of recognition. So i get recognition for an article that I didn't have anything to do with...
What's the deal?

And maybe they come out with "PSP v2-only" games...
Maybe 4GB UMDs and other stuff like that...
Oh man... AWFULNESS prevails in this situation...

I prefer they drop the price though. Perhaps a small scale revision like fixing the dpad, making it smaller (not the screen) and making the UMDs load a little faster with included memory wouldnt be too bad if they can keep the price low.

so think of it this way the psp (old one)will be priced dropped big time and the new one will prolly be from $200-$300
but this revision is alot better then the ds lite cause all the ds lite added was a brighter light and its smaller (why the hell do u need a brighter light? nintendo is crazy but there still good i got to admit nintendo is awsome

For curretn PSP games they could serve as a re programmeble 'macro' buttons like some unofficail console control pads., and then developers cud start making new games for the new buttons to be played with.....
Anyhow.....i like the PSP now, few wated down ports, but the games are great, console style! Tekken 5: DR rocks!

with the psone emulator it would be NICER to have L2, R2 and a second analogue nub. so they could put that on there.
and with the psone emulator 8gigs of hdd inside would go a long way to holding MANY 'roms' (or isos or whatever sony call them) on your stick, so you could have all of ff7, ff8 or ff9, even mgs or something else. let's face it, to have a 4 disc game you need 4 gigs, other memstick sizes won't cut it...
so that's a good feature to put in.
also, maybe they have good powersaving ideas, maybe moving that power button? there are certain things which they could implement in a REDESIGN which firmware wouldn't do sufficiently.
also, look at ds lite, sony must see that and just baulk, nintendo re-release a console (the exact same thing but shinier) and loads of people buy it! apple did it with ipod, everyone is doing it, sony would be a little daft to let such a lucrative opportunity go to waste.
also, if psplite, or whatever, did have all the buttons (or even tilt sensors?) then it could FULLY function as a ps3 controller...
then there's online digitial distribution, it sucks if you have a psp1 and you can only store one movie on it, why not have nand flash (now that it's cheap) and have 7 or 8 on it?
i welcome the change, cos a white version is not enough to make me buy a newer psp. i have my 1.5, and that's great for homebrew, but lets face it, gps, camera, mobile phone capabitlity (maybe), nand flash, psone emulator and the other things, will make a new version of psp very enticing. so i could be persuaded to part with some extra cash to buy a psplite.
one thing: ds games work on both systems and i would expect that any game released for psp would work on both versions (making L2, R2 redundant or optional within umd-games).
so there.

And if I do, I'll buy a nintendo ds lmao.

The UMD may reduce battery but it's needed for the quality of textures, sound and video that you'd expect from a PSP, it may support downloading games to the memory stick and that would be great aswell but the removal of UMDs is not something anyone should even hope for, cripes that's some bad speculation.
They're no chance they're going to add any new buttons as it creates a difference in input sets between the two models and they will never release a game on one that couldn't be played on the older models (firmware doesn't count as a model fellas, back off). It's actually illegal in US law if the product isn't clearly marked as a different product. It would be awesome if they did but it's not going to happen.
The PSP is dockable, you can buy any amount of docks that also work as displays, some have speakers and all sorts of things. Heck the only valid improvements are a change in a plastic latch and refreshing the screen a bit faster (which is up to debate as to whether that's the cause of anything, dithering occurs due to the rendering hardware, not the screen itself but an uninformed useless journo like the one who wrote this article wouldn't know that).
God awful reporting which doesn't lead to any significant proof that any of this is actually happening or what will happen when it's done. I hope there is a new model with a huge built in memory so I can get one for PSOne games and good quality movies and keep my 2GB carded one for development and homebrew, but this article doesn't really prove anything apart from that it's easy to piss off/excite internet nerds.

I still think it's too soon for something like this to hit the market though with the PS3 on the horizon. The revelation of the ps3 at e3 2005 totally killed the PSP when it came to getting Sony's attention and the PSP HAD JUST FREAKING COME OUT. I STILL SAY IF THE PSP FAILS EVERY NEEDS TO LOOK AT HOW SONY TREATED IT AT E3 2005

i show my friend my homebrew compatible psp-> he goes out and buys his own psp-> he bricks his psp cuz hes a dumb noob-> he goes back for a refund but since sony opened the homebrew world and has hidden software on the nand flash that detects homebrew useage that he is unqualified for a refund-> he misses psp soo much he goes nad buys 2 more... 1 for homebew... the other for regular psp work-> then he shows his friend and the whole cycle starts again.
trust me, this is a realistic cycle cuz it has happened( except for the part of sony knoing about my friends useage of homebrew... so he used the warrenty and BANG another psp for free lol)
o 57, dont b qwik to point fingers. mayb sony wantd to upgrade the psp for better use for ppl n not cuz of the homebrew world. use ur head( or mayb u dun hav 2 cuz ur da richest a$$ on the plannet). if we use homebrew, thats our buisness. aftr all, i bought my psp... sony didnt come to my house n offer it to me for free now did they...so they have no control on what its used for. thats to my degression.
p.s... i read the article and i was able to decifer a lot of info from it... apparently the 2 things that hav caught ma attn is the 8 gig hard drive sony wants to put in the new psp and the new cam that will b built in. that will b cool but for the hard drive...if sony did this and sayd no more mem stik, cudnt they put a total stop to homebrew by allowing onli certified files to be written to the drive... ie music vids, n stuff like that? its just an idea lol... i cud b wrong=P

I am programming a simple calculator for the PSP. That has nothing to do with me liking the NDS or hating Sony. Writing simple homebrew and emulators does not threaten Sony, unless it is an iso loader. It is no one's fault but Sony's if they lack the creativity to produce games that are more fun than the N64 games.
But then I ask myself, why am I responding to incoherent rambling labelled as a "lecture" when I should be programming a calculator...
On Topic: I'm sure that this will simply be a re-design of the PSP because Sony would have to be completely idiotic to release a new system this soon. But 8 GB of internal memory is going to be incredibly expensive. I don't see how they'll be able to sell the redesigned PSP for less than $400.
Reply
if Sony were to release an upgraded PSP, it'd probably genuinely be adding something that could not have been done at the original launch due to cost (like 8 gigs of flash memory). also, a redesigned PSP would not be coming out until sometime in 2007, if not 2008. the Nintendo DS Lite came out roughly 8 to 12 months after the original DS, and featured.....a smaller size, and a brighter backlight. whooptydoo! that's something they could have done originally, and at little cost. Nintendo holds those things back because they know their rabid fanbase will gobble it up because, "Hey, it's Nintendo!"
if Nintendo fans add up all the money they've spent on the various iterations of Gameboys they've purchased over the years (and come on, Nintendo fans, admit it, you know you bought all of them, or close to), it'd add up to way more than the cost of getting a second PSP.
Gameboy: $100
Gameboy Color: $100
Gameboy Color Pocket: $100
Gameboy Advance: $100
Gameboy Advance SP: $100
Gameboy Micro: $100
Nintendo DS: $150
Nintendo DS Lite: $150 ($200 if you imported, but i'm not counting that).
Total: $900.
Playstation Portable: $250
Playstation Portable "Lite": $250
Total: $500.
Nintendo fans and their double standards really need to go away. what applies to Nintendo should apply to Sony. if they redesign a handheld, so what. also, they aren't forcing anyone to buy the redesign. they aren't saying, "Hey! you have a DS/PSP, now get a DS Lite/PSP Lite, because we said so!!" you have a choice. much like those *****ing about the price of the PS3, Sony isn't forcing you to buy anything at $500/$600. you are choosing to do so, or not to do so. you can always wait for the PS3/PSP Lite to drop in price (it *will* happen), and more titles will be available for it anyway.
patience is often a virtue.
to milkman the sequel: like i said before, no one is forcing the early adopters to be early adopters. me, and any other early adopter out there chose to buy a PSP when it first launched, which is always a risky proposition when you are purchasing technology, as it's always changing and evolving. last years technology is vastly different from this years technology. us early adopters are aware of this, and take on that risk ourselves, no outside pressure necessary.
and if it wasn't for us purchasing the product there would be no price cuts and redesigns, as the system would be dead in the water. early adopters are necessary to technology to move forward. if people hadn't bought Color TVs back in the day (and they were costly by their standards), we'd still be watching Black and White.

Original Gamboy: Gameboy, Gameboy Pocket
Color Gameboy: Gameboy color
Advanced Gameboy: Gameboy Advance, Gameboy SP,
Gameboy Micro
Nintendo DS: Nintendo DS, Nintendo DS Lite
SO the gameboys are not the same or simple redesigns bc the color gameboy is different from the normal gameboy and the gameboy pocket so its wrong to justify them in the same catagory
So by number 64's research The "Nintendo Fanboys" have spent 150$ for the DS and $130 (not $150) for the DS lite.
280$
Compared to the PSP and PSP "lite" 500$
and the New psp isnt out or even officially announced by sony so i will not sell or be angry about buying my psp (i got it at launch date) and i'll prolly get the new psp if it does come out
I have the Nintendo DS, Nintendo DS LITE, and a PSP.

Also get your facts straight the gameboy color has always been in pocket form. If you are talking about when Nintendo released different colors for the original gameboy then I guess you need to add another $250 for the white PSP to your list then.
$900 (or $800) for Original gameboy games, gameboy color games, gameboy advance games and DS games
While $500 (or $750) for PSP games.

It's a REDESIGN!
For those of you with a PSP, it means:
a SLIMMER, SLEEKER, BETTER (read:"Accept for homebrew" second PSP for the same price as your original, which will play all of your PSP games, and store a lot more ***** on the system itself instead of a card.
For those of you WITHOUT a PSP, it means:
IF you want homebrew, go buy a used *****ing PSP at EB that is version 2.6 or lower, with an older mobo. This is not at all difficult once you consider that most locations such as EB, Gamestop, etc, offer used PSPs that theyve had for a decent while, meaning that your chances are pretty good if you know wtf youre doing.
If you dont care about homebrew, or are more interested in the latest games for the PSP, as well as having 8 gigs to store music, movies, and god knows what else, plus, yup, the same as the PSP first gen owners I spoke of above.
For EVERYONE:
There will be NO button redesign, at least, not as far as adding/removing buttons/analog sticks goes. It's made to be backwards compatible, and for the games to be compatible the the PSP 1.0, so that means nothing could utilize extra buttons or THERE GOES THE COMPATIBILITY!
This thing may have better video, processor, etc, but itd only be available for use for extras or PSP 1.1 gimmicks only, as the games, once again, would have to be backwards compatible. This is NOT A "PSP 2" any more than the DSLite is "DS 2"
It's just a good way to boost sales on the PSP and at the same time, utilize their latest security to try to prevent homebrew/piracy.
It DOESNT READ FUGGING CARTRIDGES! It reads UMDs! RTFM!
I, personally, will be purchasing one as long as its decently priced, for use with update-requiring games, and to store a lot more media, as sort of a secondary device to aid me in using both the newest PSP stuff and the older stuff, such as homebrew, thanks to a dual-handheld lifestyle.
I love my PSP as it is, but I would still enjoy owning a slimmer, more optimized PSP 1.1.
If this article is, indeed, accurate, we have nothing to fear but fear itself, as the changes are for the better, and there will always be those few million original PSPs in the world, for purchase used, and at first, unused, for a lower price.
Dont fear the change, embrace it or dont let it effect you at all.
And for gods' sakes, just learn to deal with "Lite" versions of consoles and handhelds, as they are becoming an important part in the gaming industry, for sales and consumption.

A psp 2 ?.....well yes normal after all the Devhoock Hacking and firmware hack and ISO , DAX and other homebrew thats F*ck sony company .
So in the PSP 2 new feature are :
A diferent bios Ship design , so like this firmware 4.XX will be the original one and no downgrade to 1.5 because the ship bios will not accepte older firmware ...so imagine lol .
a diferent UMD leans ......so thats mean PSP2 will play the futur PSP game better and faster then PSP1 ...lol
better life batterie and lcd screen at the TOP ....but forget about the firmware as we all know ...it will be diferent and re-updated to Stop homebrew and any hack ...for a long moment engouth to make you wait and make you buy a new PSP3 lol
Inside is so small and slim thats is IMPOSSIBLE to put a MODE SHIP ....beside you will need a MICROSCOPE to know what you are doing and all will be made to make it harder , beside even a profesionnal will have big payne to sode anything in it ...LOL
some new hardware inside to prevent any kind of add mode ship and memory stuff ....new security but hardware and not software ............
well i am sure i miss a lot of stuff but is all what i eard from SONY Company ,
the PSP1 will be wiped out and PSP2 with out hack will rulez
dont get me wrong i love homebrew and hacks ...i am PSP freedom 100% ...i just put my self in SONY shoose and i try to think like them ......a new PSP for what ?
so they will ***** the psp homebrew scene more then you think .............
i can see it from here ......people posting ....."I HAVE A PSP2 HOW CAN I PLAY HOMEBREW ?" .....and the answer will be " LOL"
So ok hack are always around but , hack are there because is possible for all of us to do so ........if you have to be a F*cking proffessional to Open and fix the inside of the psp to play homebrew you will see less and less people .....and if you have to pay a professional ...nearly none of us will be so interested about the PSP today .

ie. just like the nintendo ds lite
It will be no more than £50 extra ($70), psp can be traded in in the uk for about £100 at moment. When PSP upgrade comes out it will more or less about £70. Games will be worth £15.
Also Note: UMD games will work on this console, but not movies or music UMD's.
This PSP has a 40% chance of coming as; in the new fimeware's in the original PSP, the updated firmwares include camera, gps and 8gb memory compatibilaty.

Nope Microsoft shouldn't do that on the x-box because the x-box has some classics (KOTOR 1 & 2, Jade Edmpire, Ninja Gaiden Black, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Jet Set Radio Future etc.)

The reason Sony is releasing a new model of the PSP so soon is because the same strategy works for their competition (i.e. Nintendo and Apple's iPod). A new PSP would have the same basic hardware as the old PSP (same CPU, GPU, memory, etc). All the new PSP games will work on the old PSP so that is not a problem.
I see no reason to get so angry and start all this flaming of the new PSP redesign before we even have any solid details of what the new unit will include that is not on the old unit. Why should Sony push the same handheld when Nintendo will probably redesign the DS again before the end of its life span and while Apple improves the iPod further. Makes no sense to just sit on the old product and hope it sells while the competition continues to offer users more features. Some of you people freak out like its the end of the world.
And don't think that this new PSP will not be exploited like the old model especially since it will have the same hardware as the current PSP model. It just takes one exploit to get unsigned code running. DS Lite runs the same homebrew DS does after all.
I look forward to this new PSP model, I will buy one when it gets released if it is worth it. 8 GB of Flash Memory and a built in camera sound nice, if they improve the refresh rate on the LCD I'm sold.
Reply
For example take the memory stick, they made the memory stick duo. it's smaller and it costs alot more. so people have purchased the original memory stick sell theirs and go buy a duo.
Now they have the sony m2, so anyone who wants to use it on their phone (and maybe soon even smaller portable gaming systems/cameras) will sell their duo and buy the m2's.
Even look in the digital camera world, Sony made the R1 camera and that uses memory stick duos and it's own Sony flash mount (to communicate with the camera and the external flash unit), now they've made the successor to that, the Sony A100, and in the past with their pro cameras they have a memory stick slot (because its a sony product afterall) AND a compact flash slot. The A100 has entirely ditched the memory stick, it only has a compact flash slot. Also the Sony flash mount is gone and replaced by AN ENTIRELY NEW ONE. Um, wtf sony? Right I forgot, we have to sell all the now 'old' junk and go buy 'better' crap that we already had.
Sure Nintendo does that crap of upgrading and stuff, but at least most of their crap is compatible with the previous generation.
It's foolish to side with Sony, in the end they don't give a **** about you and are going to **** you over so you can buy their new generation of overpriced products, and thus forcing you to throw away all your 'old' Sony products and accessories that you have invested in over the past few years.

As far as cost - come on! You will probably be spending 100$ at best when you sell off all the junk + psp - (games, accessories, etc)
Also, I don't think Sony will ditch UMD for cartridges - couple reasons. Catridges are expensive to make, hold a lot less, and if anything, have no backward compatability. PSP2 might have a blu-ray UMD drive that is backward compatable. Sony likes backward compatability since it keeps all those previous owners happy.

8gb flash (even just a 4gb model would be fine)
better screen refreshrate (no more ghosting, in some games that means alot)
another analog stick (similar idea as th ps1 getting 2 analog sticks)
a built camera (hopefully a mic so i can record video)...
and keep it at the same price then sony wont only take over the handheld market but mabe even grab some of that ipod money
the real question is how come nobody expected this to happen? ps became ps one ps2 became ps2 slim line sony always does this...
IMO if sony doesnt put a second analog on the psp lite there retarded. all the fps games ive played beside socom and syphon filter the controls are frustrating. playing metroid prime DS is 10 times more fun then socom
while there at it tho they should add homebrew support bluetooth and .avi(all divx) .mov .mpg .vob codecs so you dont have to encode anything

I mean, I'm sad that new PSP owners can't experience homebrew with me, but I'm not really angry.
Some people just want a cheap, yet powerful, handheld console that supports unsigned code. There is nothing particularly foolish or evil about such a desire. Now companies wanting their customers to invest huge amounts of cash on useless crap, that is foolish and evil. The cost of buying UMD games really adds up.

But i'll say the whole thing does sound cool and i'm very loyal to sony but i'll be waiting a while before i go out and buy this. If it does use different disks, which i barely understand from the article, then hopefully Sony will be smart and do what nintendo does and release games on both psp and psp2 sometimes.
But it does really piss me off because i've only had my PSP since April. Alas not buying the PS3 right away either.

We're getting internal flash to store PS1 games and hopefully other media, plus it could double as system RAM to prevent websites from exceeding available memory. An enhancement, but still the same gaming. Slot loading UMD, integrated cam, all just improvements. Again, like Nintendo did with the DS only somewhat moreso.
But somehow, when NINTENDO re-releases hardware ad infinitum (Gameboy, Gameboy Pocket, Gameboy Light, Gameboy Color, GBA, GBA SP, GBA SP+, GBA Micro, DS, DS Lite...) it's all good. We love Nintendo becuase they're teh innovative. When SONY does it, they're teh suxxorz becuz they only want money. Nintendo doesn't want money. When Sony drops the price of the PSP to $150, it's teh lamez becuz someone just paid $199 for theirs. When Nintendo dropped the price of the DS before the Lite, well, that was just peachy.

I can understand making a new one, but If I need to buy it to play the new games I think I may dump off all things sony.
I hope this will go the way of the Ps2 slim, a bit of an upgrade but nothing *TOO* different
>though I think it would be sexy if they rolled out PSP with colours a la n64 colours

people cant decide whether to get PS3 or the new version of psp- unless if you're rich ofcourse- and with people already owing a psp- an exhange would be the best way to sell these so-called forecoming "PSP2" IT HAS TO BE EXHANGEABLE- if for some reason they dont then they're not very smart.... MAKE BETTER GAMES!
