Possible PSP-3000 spotted, Sony Europe: 'No Comment'

Potential PSP-3000 pictures - Image 1

Here's a good rumor to liven up a dreary day. Over on the PSPChina Bulletin Boards (external link), there is a claim that Sony is planning on launching a hardware upgrade for the PSP, and this claim appears to have brought along some pictures as well.

From what's been said, this "PSP-3000," as it's being called, is supposed to come with a built-in microphone (beside the volume controls in the above picture), an updated set of buttons, and some changes to the physical features of the PSP. Furthermore, the picture above shows that the Home Button of the PSP looks to have been replaced with a PlayStation Button, possibly so that it doesn't confuse owners with the Home service.

CVG reports that it's already attempted to speak with Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, and they're currently giving the usual "No Comment" routine for these sorts of things.

While it seems likely that an upgrade will happen in the future, leave it to Sony to keep us hanging until the very last moment. In the meantime, feel free to view the pictures that are available here and speculate in our comments section.

They're finally moving against the Pandora's Battery. They would've done it with the 2000, but it was just too far along by the time Pandora surfaced last year.

Whatever 'features' they're going to add to the new model are probably just a smokescreen for a redesign of the battery port.

I wouldnt be surprised if the next model doesnt work with existing batteries or is missing the third prong.

the speakers are on the bottom... the old psp's are the only ones that hav'em on the bottom, cuz the slim ones have'em on the top.

FAIL! you're 2nd comment... and where are you getting that the speakers are on the bottom... speaker holes aren't even in the picture. I'm thinking that any pluses of this model will be outweighed by security changes... They'll most definitely make a move against pandora's battery. I'm glad that I got one of the first batches of slim that can still create a jigkick battery as well. And with my internal mic mod, this new model seems less appealing.... I'm wondering what other benefits the new model may have...

This is just stupid. Sony is just trying to add more features to the PSP to get more money. That is what exactly happened with the psp slim and lite. They made it slimmer and supposably better so people would buy they're stuff and what about the other people who cant keep up. They will still get updates but they can't keep the same features for example skype. Whats next a slimmer and "more cooler" PS3.

Don't *****ing buy it.

The PSP-2000 was released with the ability to play PSP games on your TV and was a lighter version of the PSP.

The new PSP-3000 is just going to add a microphone to it just to make it appealing to new customers. For us who have the PSP Phat or Slim and Lite, there's still the option of using a headset, so we're really not missing out on anything.

Also. If you try and make an argument that having an internal microphone on the PSP is much better than a headset so you're getting screwed over, then I'll give you examples why it's just as good to get a headset even if you do have the PSP-3000. The fact that a headset usually comes with "earphones/headphones." Making the PSP much much louder, bot to mention the fact that you can talk into a microphone just below your mouth rather than all the way down on the PSP.

"No one wants a gaming cellphone, they don't sell simple as that."

True. To a degree.

However, there's still that factor that the PSP is being marketed not solely as a gaming handheld, but a media device too. And today, the iPhone is selling well. It's not just a phone, but is being marketed with all these other media features too. So, if Sony were to release a PSP phone, then it won't solely be marketed as a gaming phone, but a media device.

Remember that feature that's supposed to be heading out soon? Portable Copy? Transferring Blu-ray movies (in standard-definition) from your PS3 to PSP for on-the-go viewing? Well now... That's where I think the mobile industry is going. Nowadays, the consumer is very picky. And gaming phones just aren't that hot and all. So, marketing a phone with features that range from gaming to media to wi-fi connectivity... If Sony plays their cards right, they might take a sizeable chunk out of the iPhone's userbase.

Not that I'm really psyched for a PSP phone - I believe there's still some novelty in owning a gaming handheld. But if you look at the numbers, they'd still add up on a financial scale, and coming up with a PSP phone would still be a move worth considering for Sony. It's all a matter of risking it, right?

While the N-Gage does have other media functionalities , I don't think it was one of its strengths. Nokia risked putting out a device that was primarily billed as something that that merged mobile phones and gaming, and I still applaud them for taking that risk.

The idea of a PSP phone (no, I refuse to call it PSPhone) is just stupid. It's basically a phone with some upgraded gaming features. And Sony probably won't make a new disc format to fit with the phone. So don't hope for a PSP phone. You'll be disappointed.

And this PSP phone thing is worse than Home. "omfg psphone awesome!!!!1!"

Could I be tempted into buying a third PSP? Having one of each of the current generation, I have to admit that I am quite curious, but without a built in HDD this could be a pretty pointless update.

I seriously doubt we'll see a second nub control, as it would mean that games companies wouldn't be able to sell new games that required it to the existing userbase, unless the original 2 are so damaged by piracy now that they wouldn't care.

And will it be out before Christmas 0.0

# I'm probably going to buy one of the first onesFiska 2008-07-22 08:00
depending on whether or not it comes with additional RAM, disc speed, MS reading speed, CPU speed, or anything like that that makes it run faster. Given that the first releases will also have the earliest firmware, they would be most susceptible to firmware cracking.

Once they come out, I'll buy one, and empty the box when an exploit is found. Of course, this is all provided the gaming power of the device is upgraded; I like the current PSP as a portable arcade. To make one that does that function better would be insta-buy for me.

And really now, in order to keep up with the obvious trend of increasing graphics, they'd have to jack up the CPU power at some point. It's been what, 3 years since the release of the original? It feels about time for an upgrade. PS3 has come out since they were first using the 333 MHz cap (well, 222 at first, then 333 with PS3, roughly, and now... there's got to be something hardware wise).

So based on these assumptions (which may or may not happen), I'm buying one first thing. Of course, these are just the musings of someone who's making conjectures half based on the theory of technological advancement, so there's that.

I just got a psp slim a couple days ago and now I am curious about what other think of this.

When the 2000 came out it made the original look cut down with the lack of video out and a few other features.

What I am wondering is - do you think you will cry for the features of the new 3000. Do you think that you will feel you could have had more if you just waited?

ummm... you can still wear headphones with an internal mic... and the headset mic is weaker than the talkman and go!cam mics... so when they're mounted internally, the volume is about the same.

I think it's great. It'll probably be another 6-7 months before any official word from Sony. I hope the add more RAM or increase CPU speed. The fact that they only showed the casing says to me that they are still working out the hardware deals. Remember the Slim PSP, January 2007-complete myth, August 2007-reality. I hope they don't get rid of anything though. The only thing that would keep me from this is if this is the "Pandora Proof" PSP. The only reason Sony hates homebrew is because of ISO and CSO piracy. The UMD is nearly dead. I hope they put some new media into use soon. If this is just another "thinner and lighter/f**k homebrew people" upgrade then I'm going to be angry. As everyone know, Sony has a record of one disappointment after the other.

I can say that with certainty. Sony already makes money in the cell phone market. They aren't going to make it because then they have to sell right to a cell company and that would only alienate customers. Plus, the PSP is about gaming, it's already got Skype. That's as much phone as the PSP will ever have. Touch screen is also just fantasy. The fact that they received a patent on one simply says "touch screen phone" not "psp with touch screen". I hope everyone understand what I'm saying. STOP ALL THE PSPHONE AND RELATED MYTHS, BECAUSE THAT'S ALL THEY ARE!!!!

I don't understand what you have against a PSP Phone. I think it's a great idea. It's not that all your games will not work anymore. They will just the phone abilities. Why is this a bad idea? Sony is trying to do something great with the PSP and all you do is complain. The reason the N-Gage failed is because it simply sucked. No good games, much to expensive and too expensive games, and bad marketing.

And don't come me with Skype. That is just pathetic. If it would be possible in-game, it would be okay but else it's just one of the most stupid features ever created.

Yeah, sure I go around seaching for a hotspot just to connect to skype so nobody can contact me.

first thing

anyone notce why it shows the where the umd drive used ot be?.....

i say this could be the HDD

also about the psphone

it will be a psp first, media hub second and a phone last

thats why it will excel over the n-gage, the n-gage was released as a phone with gaming capabilities, the psphone will (if) be sold as a console with phone capabilites, theres a huge difference

honestly i dont think this is true, anyone can make a psp cover, and the fact its been released by a third party connected with th official site, then could it just be a publicity stunt?

also people where talking about sony ripping people off

1. how do you know this wont be the PSP 2, a whole new generation

2. sony doesnt release a 2 psps a year

3. apple is a rip and so is the whole ipod thing, everyone simply wants it because everyone else wants it, people are unwilling try to various products as they might be looked upon as being cheap O_o rip offs

4. are does more choice become a rip

5. if your gealous, then thats your own problem either buy it or dont, just dont yap about it

and finally if this is true, dont worry it will be hacked, as all things are, at some stage

"then I'll give you examples why it's just as good to get a headset even if you do have the PSP-3000."

What's that mean? Oh yeah. It says I'd recommend getting a headset regardless if you get the PSP-3000(which will include the mic) or PSP Phat or Slim.

And who the ***** cares if the Gocam has a better mic? There's still the fact that headphones make it so other people aren't bothered by you playing the system. Common sense plz. Thank you ^_^.

# A reason to no "PSP phone"...Chrisp6825 2008-07-22 15:33
I think another reason that a PSP phone would be a big risk is the fact the people have modded and completely torn up the PSP.

If we had that, plus a phone, it would mean unlocking the carrier (Cingular only to T-mobile, like IPhone), de-branding, and homebrew apps that used the phone in un-intended ways.

The IPhone is already cracked and all, but it's not meant to run games and stuff close to homebrew, so I think the PSP with phone capabilities being hacked kinda scares sony...

Thats just what I think...

The only way i would give up the option of homebrew is if the new psp had a internal hd a second analog more support for different video formats a better browser maybe with some java support and a updated flash player. Also im tired of waiting for all the hardware addons that the other countries are getting for the psp. Gps, TV tuner and Go Cam still havent been released in the US but there thinking about putting out a psp 3000. Heres what i think the new advertisement for the psp 3000 should be " The newer sleeker cooler less weighing non hackable completely dax proof and pandora proof psp-3000 get yours now for only $299.00 ". I honestly dont think there will be that much to the next upgrade. I really believe to update a system and this is what console/game system buyers believe is if the graphics and speed of the system arent up graded then it shouldnt be called an upgrade or even new im my opinion.

WELL companies work like that, if they stop making new devices fro next years, they will lose or not get so much money as they used to or like other competitive companies. Is true APPLE makes New Ipods every year or something like that, imagine Sony stop making New devices when Apple will be still doing it just to get more money even if the new devices are the same except some crap on it? It would be Massive LOSE!! for SONY. So why not come with a total "New" Redesign PSP (PSP-3000) With stuff that PSP USERS would love that this have? Like Built in mic, why not to add a Built in Camera too, where ? on the Back or up front ? Why not both? Okay this would be nice features, New Video Graphic Card, Faster RAM, Extended Flash Memory (for "Sony New Features" "ONLY") New Touch Screen(every Good device have one why PSP cant have one?!) Two Joystick, Internal Memory or In-built HDD. Re-design UMD Drive (one that Reads New Minisized Blu-ray disks, well when SONY makes them specially re-size for the NEW PSP-3000).

May me SONY will ADD UP all CFW features with SONY License (Except ISO Reading, Until Sony figure out the way to stop UMD Piracy(("APE Quest Packages, Good call)) , That will be sweet all stuff we love from CFW but Legal on OFW?

Just May be...

New PSP 3000 nice IDEA for SONY to Make more Millions out of of some NEw MODEL with Over-Security Kernel and some built in stuff in side, Plus Great looking ' Playstation logo Home Button'!! SO don't say is the same PSP Slim and Lite , probably would be the same size as it.

Well this Will be a great model or a Better PSP Slim & Lite.

If u think it like that would be easy to buy, plus I havent buy a PSP Slim and Lite, I have a PHAT and I dont see the fact that I have to buy the same PSP just because is Thiner and doesn't have Kernel 1.50! I called that a RIP off for Already PSP USers and NEW Generation for New PSP USERS.

Since this NEW PSP-3000 is coming may be before Christmas I would buy it if it has more that the Slim does...

Not just Slimer and Skype -_-""!

Thanks thats my Opinion! Take it or Leave it Xp

I'm going to get one simply because its a new model, I'd like to have atleast one of every model.

The way I see it is it'll have:

In-built Mic (which will come in handy)

The 54 mbps WLAN card (802.11b/g) there was an article on QJ sometime ago about a new WLAN chip. My guess is it'll be capable of 333 mhz and 54 mbps.

Last week there was an article saying the internal HDD is a possiblity, so we may get that too This will be handy.

A reason why a PlayStaion Phone would do better than the N-Gage is that it would be linked to the PlayStation brand, Nokia do not make gaming consoles so there is no insentive to buy a phone that has their gaming abilities.

gamers would have read about

and people who make their living on the internet, and need to use it, may come across the article

also, it may make people hold off on buying a psp, but then again it could get the psp into the mid of xbox owners fro example

although they will be waiting for a new psp, as soon as this article is dismissed and the psp proven a fake, or the fact that it never comes out, or we wont see it again

it will then prompt those who dont own psps to go out and buy on

its a bit more in-depth, but its true

it simply gets the psp into the minds of others, as soon as people get interested and begin to wait for a new psp, it gets dismissed causing those who now want a psp to go out and get an older model just before a new model is introduced

the fact that you said all good devices have touchscreen, what a bull***** comment

seriously

does the ps3, xbox or wii one

do all sony bravias have touch screen (there might be one or two but that doesnt mean the rest are *****)

and before you say you meant handheld

yes touch-screen is a cool idea, but its bloody awful

i for one do not want to get finger prints all over the screen, and stylus require a whole hand so your gonna be holding the psp with on hand, and the stylus in the other HOW ARE YOU MEANT TO PLAY

and finally the slim got serveral improvements over than size an weight

TV output

ITS AN UPGRADE NOT A NEW CONSOLE

ffs, if something is updated then normally its only one or two minor things are changed, even if its a major update the psp stays true to its original format, such as UMD etc

your wanting a new console, not an upgrade

if visuals and umd was changed in an update, its not a very good update as it would require people to change there whole set up, they wont beable to play their umd games on their new psp

therefore nothing it upgraded

the only time youll see such a drastic measure as that is in a PSP2

I know that if Sony hasn't built a Blu- Ray Disk so tiny like that They will not made one, at least for the rest of the Year. Actually I didn't meant to say in anyway that other Non-Touch Screen devices were Crap. Well lets say that Touch Screen would not be so good then for PSP.... But Touch Sensitive and Pressure will do just okay.

Example: U ever touch an IPOD? How do u volume up and down? Well Sweeping lft and right to volume up and down, right? Well Imagine the PSP with two Touch Sensitive Pressure Display( Directional Buttons and Playstation Buttons (X,O, [ ] and /\)) With that same technology of sweeping but in ways like a Joystick and when u push it will act as Directional Buttons on the Display 1. On display two sweep like a Joystick (second Joystick) and when push will act as buttons. And in the middle each JoySensor Display will have L3 and R3 when u press on it(push). That way will save space and will be conformable to play and use the Device (PSP).

But this never will be true so will keep fate that they add 2 joystick instead of one.

Thanks

An official dumper would get hacked so quickly.

Have you ever tried to do play an AdHoc game using UMD against a person using ISO, the ISO one loads so much quicker that they get into the match first while your still loading and then the game has a disconnection due to the not yet getting into the match. -This is another reson why I don't see an official dumper happening, not all games overcome this error. Ace Combat X, GTA LSC, and GTA VCS all have this problem , but Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror does seem to.
