No PSP 2, but a "PSP FIX"?

Ó

PSPWe reported earlier about a rumor that Sony is hinting a PSP2 with Sony allegedly emailing survey forms that seek feedback about how the PSP could be better. That's not the only "hint" that the Sony people are giving; apparently, there was a PSP focus group in New York wherein the guys over at Sony distributed preliminary questions that focuses on the PSP's functions and how the gamers used 'em.

If you're already rejoicing that indeed a PSP2 is on the way, well hold your horses. A PSP2 is still far from the horizon, instead a "PSP Fix" may be the reason for all those hints. Also, it seems that this PSP Fix will include an " "iTunes-like" downloadable content, e GPS functions, maps, and PDA life software apps."

As for the downloadable content factor, those who participated in the focus groups were asked to rank 7-1 "content like You Tube/User Videos, Music Videos, Full Length Movies, 30 Minutes TV shows, 60 Minutes TV Shows, HBO Programs and such, like The Sopranos." Will these be any indication of the features included in the fix? Your guess is as good as ours.

There was also a lot of talk about software emulation (for PS1 and homebrew) but the Sony rep was allegedly uninterested, or maybe he just didn't know what to say. What do you think about this rumored "PSP Fix"? Is it good or bad news? Tell us through your comments.

how about a physical fix like the d-pad which sucks d@#k for fighting games like street fighter an when they release tekken, sony should listen to the people who use them and hire some of the guys who make homebrew apps an games instead of corparate wankas who are usualy the opposite to what people want

When I first saw the survey, I deduced that these features were going to be included in firmware updates and first-party accessories, in order of importance so that they can determine which feature to prioritize and release in the proper time.

Theres no point in releasing a "fix" for the PSP. You don't fix what's not broken. The PSP isn't doing as well as it should be because they're up against the DS. Bring out more games for my friggin PlayStation Portable.

# yeah,comedy 2006-06-16 01:05
this sounds more like what kind of firmware updates and things should be given priority, i mean they can't just open the flood gates and give us the choice of all the possible apps from day one.

that picture's from ages ago as bumbum (#8) said, it's a concept picture.

they woudln't replace the hardware, it's doing too well and they like to milk old hardware as long as possible. though saying that, they've brought out slimline ps2's and the psOne... still it's too early for them to alter psp, it's touted to be a big gimmick for ps3, so they certainly won't fool around with that.

# PSP D-PadGuest 2006-06-16 01:47
You can fix your D-pad by opening up your PSP and inserting a small cross made out of plastic (margarine tub lid, or any thing plastic) between the plastic D-pad and the rubber inlay below it. Games like SF2 and Darkstalkers Chronicle will work PERFECTLY. Yes, it fixes your D-pad. Google for it and there are walkthroughs online.

The more components added to the PSP through firmware upgrades the more possibilities to hack the system. We need access to the PSP again like 1.0 gave us, but with a new firmware and without a damn overpriced modchip.

This "PSP Fix" Will probably leave the old Model in the dark. They'll quit making the older model... ETC.

Wait.. Better online Gaming? Great. Now I can watch You tube videos. And online videos. But how are they going to do that? Extend the ram? Hopefully.

Err most of that c*^p has been slated for release for the PSP before any PSP2 comes out. Like someone else said, I think they are just trying to get a feel for which is most likely to recoup the most revenue in the shortest space of time. I like the idea of GPS, but doubt I'd buy one for the PSP unless its £50.00 or under. PSOne emulator? YAWN...... PDA style apps.? Its about sodding time but are u gonna charge me £40.00 for Notepad without a keyboard?

I think the one thing that most people would agree on the PSP needing would be some kind of keyboard, but seeing as homebrew are the *only* apps. that will benefit from this its doubtful that we will get one.

# The machine is TOO DAMN BIG!Guest 2006-06-16 04:03
Psp is going to lose to the light Lite just like it already is doing. Sony needs to listen even closer to their customers to make this work.

Portables=Good form factor.

Even Nintendo, who HATES change(everyone knows this), had to make a physical 'fix' in order to make a difference. I almost never carry my psp with me because of it's weight, size, and fragility when traveling. Then one day I 'woke up'. And, realised that's RIDICULOUS! This is supposed to be a handheld. Something I should be taking with me on trips!

Shortly after this, i imported a Lite. Now, I completely understand Nintendo's dominance in this market. The Lite taught me something very important about handhelds. They should be:

1. Easy to carry.

2. FUN (not necessarily techincally superior, but actually FUN)

3. Have a protected screen.

And last, if you are going to boast that your machine is a multimedia 'powerhouse' then you MUST give the damn thing a HARD DRIVE! Nobody is interested in purchasing a 'new' media to see movies that they can get for free off of the net! Even Apple Ipod makers know this!

They need to stop letting the 50year old 'suits' make the design decisions and start to listening to us.

WE BUY THE GAMES, WE PLAY THE GAMES!

its probably going to be a firmware update not a new hardware, what makes you ppl think they will release a new hardware just to fix the problems the old one had. sony is not nintendo, meaning you will not see multiple psp models in the market ie. DS, DS lite. instead i see sony waiting till 2008 to release the next psp, which will be cell equiped and the tilt technology to compensate for the missing anolog stick, and will cost a fortune haha.

Sony will not release another PSP anytime soon. Check back in a few years. It just sounds to me that they want to make the PSP more open to all media formats. I would give up homebrew anyday for TV and youtube features on my PSP that work good. GPS, PDA features like alarm clock and Email would sell more systems too. Mainly to people like me who love to play some games and when your stuck, watch The Jogernaut B**** on youtube. Plus Sony made the USB port and upgradeable software for a reason, their not gonna throw away the smarter and cheaper choice and come out with something comepletely different this early in the PSPs life. That's dumb. And even if for some stupid reason Sony decides it's best to toss the PSP in the trash and get the PSP2.00bettersystem, I'll be too busy waiting in line to buy my XBP and Halo Portable. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it.

Kinda funny how Sony could make more money from the home brew scene, even though they act like they're against it they have to like it because if they release a new PSP or whatever a lot of home brew scene people will rush out to buy a new one, just so they can have HB on one and new games and what not on the other.

I wish I was there during this "survey". I would have told this guy that anyone wanting to do most of that ***** is ALREADY DOING IT. Except of course for the I tunes part. It doesn't take a genius to put the latest Sopranos episode of his PSP. There just trying to delve into a market thats already thriving in the underground while at the same time trying to make a quick buck. The way they see they can promote these new features while incorporating new "security fixs". This so called "rep" as the story describes him was uninterested when the subject of homebrew came up? I would have kept my mouth shut and slapped down the sales figures of movie UMDs vs. game UMDs. I think then that would get his attention. I dont know about most of you but I love my PSP and my main use for it is games, I would say like 95% games and 5% other. Hey $$$$ONY rep I hope your reading this, and yes I love my F'ing HOMEBREW and would never give it up buddy. Examine that ***** in your study group!!!

ever since psp came out i've gotten back in, through the hacking and getting hombrew going, finding glitches, i think the psp is perfectly fine, i'm running the 4 gig hard drive and the 3600 maH battery and i bought my own custom case for it being bigger than what the psp cases are for, but there are only a few things i want on this psp:

1. an update with psone emulation(theyd make a lot of money off of it)

2. some internal upgrades, such as memory, maybe even embed a larger hard drive into the system i mean come on the ipod can fit 30 gigs, with what the psp can do we need 30 gigs to put it to its full potential.

3. and lastly, sony should make an MMO because world of war craft, guild quest, and final fantasy XI are amazing

im hooked on monster hunter(theyshou ld release an MMO version of taht too ;-D

# No Mod ChipGuest 2006-06-16 11:49
This fix is obviously to Create new hardware so the mod chip won't even fit in your psp, no homebrew, and no 1.5 new games, 99% PS1 games emulated, and other useless stuff that you could just about do on 1.5 sooner or later. I wonder if they'd make it like a backwards compatible with PSP1 like ps2 does.

# Here is a great idea!Guest 2006-06-16 12:45
To Sony,

Here is a great alternative to keep the umd disk format blood fowing beatufully as well as leave for backwards compatability for the next psp. For the psp2 or whatever it will be called. Please make disk space bigger. Yes, alot of you say that flash memory can surpass the memory of a umd. True, but sony needs to keep umd production cheap as possible a bunch of games on 4GB flash cards would add 50-100 more dollars to the price. We dont want that! So to make the PSP2 end up to be smaller, let it be able to read "bare" 1.8Gb umd's and, lets say 2.6 umds as an exampple of the higher capacity umd's. Would'nt that make it hard to keep the psp slim? Nope, if the games for the psp came shipped, bare, without the umd casing, sure, it could get scratched more easily, but we have been putting up with regular cd's for years now, since playstation1. So, the new bare umd should slide right in a slit, like a mac os x. Like a floppy drive being inserted into a l=slit. But with a umd. This will keep the psp slimmer. Would'nt that leave 2 slots? No, for to acheive backwards compatability all you will have to do is for your old psp, split the umd casing, and slide the umd cd right out. Then , you can use it on the psp2. Eventually, if sony listens to this great idea, they will probably create a tool to extract a umd from its casing. I've done it many times and it is easy. Why do i do it? Because i test the thoery of case splitting with games that are too scratched to play. So, there is my idea. Anyone agree?

# ideasGuest 2006-06-16 12:58
Sony needs to let people give them IDEAs, not give out questionnaires. I can see the logic in that, but all they are basically saying is "we're planning on making these, how much should we sell them for" rather than asking the customers what they REALLY want.

Saying that, I'd like a camera (a video camera that is, with sound). Not so sure about the gps though.

Reply

# yes i agreeGuest 2006-06-16 13:00
but the PSP2 (not PSP fix) should have mini blue rays, rather than mini DVD's in cases (UMD). Yes just the disc without the case would be slimmer and in that case the PSP2 (not the fix) should come with a value pack including a holder for the bare discs because they will get scratched. other than that I agree with #57

I think the size is fine but I wish it were sturdier. I hardly take it with me for the fact that if I drop it, it maybe a goner. I hope they bring PS1 emulation to it and that you should not have to pay for the games you already own for the PS1. One thing I don't know about is how they can emulate game control correctly if you have no L2 and R2 buttons. I wish you can play other versions of video like wmv, mpg and avi without hacking the darn thing. I also don't like the internet browser to much because it doesn't always organize things properly even if you change the settings.

Maybe in the future they can make one that works on wireless internet so you can be almost anywhere to use it instead of being in hot spots.

Man thats alot of stuff. But overall the PSP has been fun and I use mine just about everyday.

# Firmware Update?Guest 2006-06-16 18:06
You know, they could have the PSP perform all of these functions, as it is right now. My theory as to what this is hinting at? A HUGE firmware update.

Think about it. Sony likes to make and save money. It also loves the idea of forcing us to update constantly. By not releasing a peice of hardware to accomplish this task, they save themselves the developement and distribution costs.

By making it the dreaded 3.0, they not only make it available to more people, but they can put a stop to homebrew for the moment. Two birds with one stone for Sony. But... Does anyone elso share the view that they are doing this in direct retaliation to the Undiluted Platinum rumor? It would fit, and would be an even sweeter victory for them.

Extra battery: $50.00 CND

2gb stick or 4gb: $125 or $245

Datel Wifi Router: $60.00

PSP: I hope ill find v1.5 for under $300

Total- WHOPPING $600 ..oh welll ill have so many free games on stick...worth it...plus the emulators

Should i get the 2gb stick or 4gb stick?
