NGP getting Unreal 3 and Havok support

Sony's next generation portable entertainment system (codenamed NGP) will have major backing from some of the established gaming software platforms around. Hot on the heels of middleware companies Trinigy, NaturalMotion and Crytek announcing their support to the device, Epic Games and Havoc has now also confirmed that they are bringing their respective game engines to NGP.

At last months PlayStation Meeting 2011 in Tokyo, Epic Games' founder Tim Sweeney presented a sneak peek of what their system can do on the device, giving the audience present in the event a real-time preview of a large, outdoor environment running on NGP, demonstrating a sweeping panorama full of particle systems, animating characters and atmospheric lighting effects.

"We were very proud to be onstage with SCE to give the world just a taste of what Unreal Engine 3 can do on NGP," said Mark Rein, vice president of Epic Games. "NGP raises the bar for the performance of handheld platforms with its multi-core GPU and shader-based, multi-core CPU. This makes Unreal Engine 3 a particularly advantageous fit for NGP. Furthermore, multiple UE3 licensees are already working with NGP, some of which have indicated they intend to release their games for the platform's launch."

"We see NGP as a true game-changer with a perfect combination of performance, innovative controls and gamer appeal that make it truly a high-end console in your pocket," said Sweeney.

Another major outfit pledging full support to NGP is Havoc, a physics and animation firm owned by Intel. According to the press release sent out by the company, the full development suite of their Havoc Technology is now ready for game production on NGP. Havok and SCE have a long history of partnership (Uncharted 2 and Demon’s Soul, among others) and now have worked closely together in optimizing Havoc for NGP. Additionally, Havok’s technology for NGP has been tapped by a number of key launch titles for NGP.

“Havok's suite of tools and targeted optimization for NGP will ensure that developers have best-of-breed production solutions on SCE’s exciting new platform,” David Coghlan, Managing Director, Havok, said.

That articles are one page again?

That Sony is doing their damnedest to hype-up the NGP before they announce a $400+ price-point for the low-end model?

Or that Havok is in absolutely everything and saying that it's going to be available for a system nearly as powerful as the PS3 is like saying my refrigerator makes ice-cubes.

Also, now that there's a working version of Unreal Engine 3 on iOS, it's not all that special that it's going to be on the NGP too. Assuming that it wasn't would have just been plain silly.

I don't really like taking the wind out of peoples sails, but seriously, this isn't news. It was as inevitable as the sun rising. This is just a really weak marketing blip.

The NGP looks awesome, and I probably won't have money for it. But lets face it, people are lining up to buy useless ipads for $600 and their cellphones cost around the same price,if sony markets this right they could sell many even if they were priced at $400. I still hope it doesn't cost as much but I doubt it would be less.

For all its flaws, let's get one thing clear; Sony releases quality products. They're the Apple of the console world. $500 would annoy the hell out of me...

... but I'd probably purchase it anyway.

This is pretty good news actually. This means we might actually get a bunch of games for NGP right with it's release, considering the licencing on UT3 engine. UT3 engine is free for use until you reach a certain profit, afterwards you have to buy the engine. This will help a lot of small dev release games for NGP or why not cross-platform.

Unreal 3 and havok support is ok, but imagine a microsoft and sony collaboration, now that would be interesting, port some 360 titles over, halo nxt gen? whatever, cant see a problem really, as for ngp pricing i'm jus gonna chill, no point in bustin a hernia, it'll be what it'll be.
