New Nintendo 64 Emulator from Daedalus!

Yup, a new build for the much talked about Nintendo 64 emulator has just been released moments ago. StrmnNrmn has released the official Daedalus R5 Emulator with many improvements.  Here is the change log from StrmnNrmn himself.

[+] New DynaRec engine, resulting in significant performance improvements
[+] New front end - ability to toggle a couple of options (more to come)
[+] Save game first pass (eeprom4k, eeprom16k and mempak)
    [^] Various interpreting engine optimisations
[~] Use .png file format for background images, save ~380KB
[~] Stripped out unnecessary code, save ~250KB

From the looks of it, there seems to be about a 2-3 frames per second of improvement on average.  Not to shabby if you ask me.  This is yet again a huge movement in the Nintendo 64 emulation scene.  Try out your favorite Roms and tell them how they work, if they work and the frames per second.  StrmnNrmn once again thinking about his fans has released two different versions of his excellent emulator, and the source if you want to fiddle around with it.  Thanks for the brilliant emulator StrmnNrmn.

I don't know, this emu is pretty good, but its pretty tough to play these games so slowly. I realize that this is an almost impossible to thing to make, but it's not really that big of deal when your playing only some N64 games at 1/4 the actual speed....

pretty good, i like the save states add on, without that it was pointless in even trying to play a game. cant wait till this gets faster though.... then itl be a full emulator, sound would be nice too, dont need it though.

When did the homebrew scene pop in? Was it Around May 2005 Or About the time of the japanese release? I have witnessed amazing progress for the PSP homebrew scene. Love the support for it. People have said it would take a few years for this progress. I believed it would take almost a year before we could emulate the 64. This is amazing!!!!!! Sony sucks! (I say that as I type away on a Sony PCG-GR370 VAIO. 5 year old computer. Its a great build too!)

it uses the save function of the game itself in sm64 collect a star save the game and then quite the emulator. then start is again start mario and you notice that your save slot hase a mario icon on it. with the number of stars behind it.

and i think if this emu can get to around 20fps it is good playable mario runs at 12 to 15 and i found it good playable

# Future Progress??Guest 2006-06-15 04:18
I hope strmn nrmn has a lot of space to work with. As in the emulator is obviously not near complete and the poor frame rate is just a lack of full compiling of all assests in the emulator. I haven't read anywhere about percentages in each area of emulation, like on the PSPSone site.

# It runs - that's a startGuest 2006-06-15 04:28
It's good to see the Emulator is actually running, but I think the developer needs to stop worrying about special features and focus more on getting the games running over 30FPS.

There's no need to add stuff to the code until you get the Roms running faster and more stable.

THEN you can look into stuff like sound and save states.

Just my opinion.

Good work so far though!

#115. What is the file extension on your rom??

Reply

# okGuest 2006-06-15 10:06
people who say it's slow , to make it go faster enable the dynarec recompiler and disabled tesselate large tris which will decrese a bit the quality of the graphics but wil make the rom go faster. And for saving , games like Mario auto save when getting a star and games that theres a save button then press the save button , save the games like you woul in a real N64.

# HERE'S THE DEAL!Guest 2006-06-15 10:28
OK here's the deal people:

1. After selecting ROM enable Dynamic Recompilation in ROM settings. You will get better speed.

2. You will notice there is NO SOUND, at least that was the case with Super Mario World.

3. Yes, it is true the START button does NOT work when playing Super Mario World. Why? I dont know. Probably a slight oversight.

4. When playing a game if you press SELECT it will show you the FPS you are running in the upper left hand corner.

In closing this version is definitly faster than the last. Much props and respect go to the devs of this fine emu and I look forward to the upcoming revisions.

It already has reached 30 FPS! I got 34 FPS during certain menus in the game! It is possible to reach 30, and beyond. If you have kept up with these N64 Emulators you'd know that they predict around 4-6 months, until full speed is reached. So stop your uneducated speculations! Even if this, or any other N64 emulator your not encouraging anyone to improve there work. Be more encouraging, and I love this emulator

Stop wasting your time deadalus.. You would be smarter if you tried to make something POSSIBLE, like gba emulator.. Why trying to do such enormeus advance, if the gba(mush easier to emulate) isnt emulated??? Making smaller improvement its the way to get to the top! Consider that please.

Stop with all these complaints!!! If you want a GBA emulator make it yourself, or wait for someone else! Until then let developers like strmnnrmn develope what ever the hell they want. Don't put pressures on these guys! I really respect this work, I cannot wait until the next update, and even if these updates are not perfect, don't bad mouth it! I hear "Ohhh why... WHY did u make this OMFGLMNOP!!!11!!! cuz its suxy!" People release updates so they can get feedback, and intelligent feedback. If you guys think it is so pointless to emulate a N64 on a PSP... Don't emulate it!

these sites are the most reliable (and free) rom downloading sites on the web. all other ones i've tried suck.

1) www.coolrom.com

2) www.emuparadise.org

with emuparadise if u cant get past the start part (with the password and *****) than do this

4 N64 go to www.emuparadise.org/roms/n64

4 GBA go to www.emuparadise.org/roms/gba

4 SNES go to www.emuparadise.org/roms/snes

game boy colour is gbc, NES is nes etc.

1. if you are running in eloader change clock to 333 using r1 button

2.before you select a rom in the main daedalus menu click options turn the setting off then press start to return to the main menu

3.select your rom and on the rom menu make sure dynamic recompiler is enabled and press start to play

# Regarding dynamic compilationGuest 2006-06-16 12:30
Isn't the N64's CPU effectively the same as the PSP's? They're comparable MIPS right? So is it mainly the graphics or something slowing it down? I'm not sure I understand why chunks of the executable code can't be 'simply' fixed-up for straight execution on the PSP? Curious. Great job, though!
