Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops Screen

We all love a bit of Metal Gear Solid, whether it be on a home or a portable console and it appears that Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, the latest in-development PSP addition to the long-running stealth shooter series has already taken the gaming community by storm. Although it hasn't even been released yet, MGS:Portable Ops has already won best in show at this years Tokyo Games Show and now we have this wonderful trailer that shows off just how multiplayer on the PSP should be done.

This trailer shows some amazing graphics and a good speed in a Multiplayer mode that looks as free roaming as the Grand Theft Auto series. You won't get any choppy gameplay here, no WiFi lag or badly-made maps. You don't see  your character randomly walking into an invisible wall as Konami have made an effort to create natural barriers to form the edges of the map.

Some players generally feel that PSP games have 'rushed' multiplayer modes, but here you can see that they have put effort into it, making this fun for all the family rather than just a lonely gamer. You can take control of a nice range of weapons and a combat looks like it's up to a good standard. The game is due to be released in 2007, so to keep yourself occupied in the meantime why not check out this rather impressive trailer.

» errr...

is it just me, or were those really hexagonal shaped tyres? and the movements of the character looked like the players were having some problems moving around. I'm starting to get worried about MGS. The previous videos look good though.

seriously. that looks bad. graphics are great. but the controls look very clunky and i dont want to fire while viewing my back. most of the times the player died is because he coujldnt see the target he was firing at becuae he could only see his back. camera views look horrid.

It looks exactly like MGS3:S's multiplayer. Seems to play just like it as well.

If anything there will be first person view aswell, but it'll probably be 100% behind your guy. Maybe we'll be able to rotate the camera around like in MGS3:S, that'd help alot.

But, the moving took getting used to on ps2, so these people probably just weren't good.

» Oh aye?

The very first sentence of this news article is flawed.

"We all love a bit of Metal Gear Solid..."

Uh, no we don't. Personally, I think MGS was fairly poor, judged purely as a game (defined as an entertaining interactive experience). It was somewhat entertaining, but "interactive"? I mean, 5 minutes of gameplay followed by 20 minutes of cutscene, repeated ad infinitum? No thanks. The best kind of storytelling is one which does not take you out of the game - System Shock 2 is a notable (and still unparalleled) example.
