Tomb Raider

Earlier today we brought you some news about Tomb Raider: Anniversary Edition, apparently a reworked compilation of Tomb Raider 1&2 for the PSP, a title that was rumored to have been canceled.

At this point it's important to note that Tomb Raider: Anniversary Edition is being developed by Core Design, the original developers and creators of the Tomb Raider series of games. The latest chronological addition to the franchise, Tomb Raider: Legend (also due out for the PSP) is being developed by Crystal Dynamics, both titles however, are being published by Eidos.

Since the trailers appearance this morning the net's been positively bristling with activity. Skepticism over the trailers authenticity has run high, and optimistic PSP owners wondered why a title that seemed to show so much promise would be canceled. While no official word has been given by either Core Design or Eidos, the former has put up a notice on their official home page that reads as follows:

Following forum speculation that Core Design is no longer trading, we're pleased to say we're still very much here, so worry not. In fact, we're waiting to officially announce some very exciting news very, very soon. Watch this space.

In addition, someone purporting to be a member of the Core Design development team has made a post on the Tombraiderchroncles.com forums under the name Taohl and had this to say:

Hi all, you'll have a few people from Core online tonight and tomorrow morning with their feelings on this thread but don't expect anything concrete about the trailer.

We have (as the Core team) been asked not to divulge too much or enter into a protracted debate about the topic of this thread until an official statement is made. This is due tomorrow or possibly Monday and is to be arranged by our new owners / bosses as we are not under eidos' supervision anymore.

The facts will be made clear (or are there within this thread on previous entries if you can just believe them). Please be patient and appreciate that a particular small Core team (of the 60 development staff at the Derby office which has not been disbanded or closed down and is still making games) is very annoyed with the way this trailer has been dealt with.

If you want to know the truth then please wait and avoid the massive and unfounded speculation that has been circling and becoming increasingly grandiose and is more of a conspiracy theory now than a serious debate.

Thank you for your interest in the trailer, some of your comments have made us smile, some have down right annoyed us and some are simply bizarre.

I work for Core and turn in five days a week and the windows are not boarded up as far as I know.

At this point we're unable to confirm the validity of this individuals identity, but if he really is a member of the Core Design team then his comments would seem to indicate that it's possible the title has not in fact been canceled, and we can expect official confirmation by Monday at the very latest. We'll be keeping our ears to the ground.

» Thinner waist and bigger breasts

#1: Is there anything wrong with a thinner waist and bigger breasts? I don't hear any complaints. ^_^

» Dumb

~6: Firstly, this is nothing to do with TR:Legend. Secondly, warez are not appreciated here and niether is mindless spam.

» confirmation

according to http://www.us.playstation.com/PSP tomb raider legend is slated for release in 06/2006 (wait! isn't that THIS month?) it has been confirmed! LARA LIVES ON PSP!!!

» oh why

Anyone thought that this isnt a trailer for TR on the PSP but just a trailer for the PS2/PC game formatted for the PSP screen?

The game looks too good. Playing socom and other 3d games the edges are jaggy, the framerate drops. This game is sharp, smooth and looks great. Even if the processor unlock was removed I still cant see it running as good as the trailer makes out.

» it is fake

Actually, just played the trailer again and the backing music... Its from Star Wars.

Why would an official trailer as this claims to be use copyrighted music from Star Wars. They wouldnt be able to secure the rights.

I call bullspit 100%

» New bosses?

Core Design were bought by Rebellion Software, which makes their new bosses - Jason & Chris Kingsley...

» People, at least read the article before posting

#13: People..... READ. This isn't about Tomb Raider legend. This is about a remake of the original two tobm raiders created by Core Desgin (the original creators of the Tomb Raider series).

#15: This trailer isn't meant to be in public domain yet. It was an internal trailer which has supposedly been leaked. If this is an internal beta, it's quite likely that no soundtrack has been created yet.

The only reason that I have for this being fake is that if Core Design have been sold, I would assume that Eidos kept the rights, making a Core Design TR kind of unlikely, unless they have some sort of agreement with Eidos

by yoshinatsu - 2006-06-09 01:08
» Oh yes!

Oh man... TR1+TR2 were the games that made me love the Tomb Raider series (and not Lara).

Please, make that true Eidos. PLUS, both games are really suitable for PSP.

» Uhyve

Thanks for clearing that up, I guess I should have stated more clearly in the article, but I figured the Core dude said it clearly enough that the video was not meant to be released the way it was.
