New Final Fantasy Dissidia video

For those of us keeping tabs on the Square Enix beat-em-up that's headed to the PlayStation Portable, Final Fantasy: Dissidia, here's something to send chills down your spine and whet your appetites at the same time: its first ever trailer video. Prepare to be blown right out of your chairs.

The video begins with the first calming notes of the Materia theme - and then it's full throttle from then on. We see gloriously-detailed characters fighting it out in destructible arenas with their over-the-top attacks rivaling those of a certain fighting game with colorfully-dressed ninjas. One thing to note is that the characters have voice acting - something that the Final Fantasy franchise had never dabbled with, that is, until next-gen, and they actually FIT their corresponding character's personalities as we know them.

The last part of the trailer then confirms something we've been all wondering about - the presence of a certain one-winged angel with the seven-foot sword in the game. Enough spoilers from us. Do yourself a favor and watch the video - you have to see it to believe it.

» Uhh... Voice Acting?

"One thing to note is that the characters have voice acting - something that the Final Fantasy franchise had never dabbled with, that is, until next-gen, and they actually FIT their corresponding character's personalities as we know them."

Way to annoy the FF Fanboys. PS2's Final Fantasy X had voice acting back in 2001, and then again in FFX-2 in 2003, and Dirge of Cerebus in 2006, and Final Fantasy XII in 2006.

So never dabbled with? Seriously? Try entirely had every line spoke by the protagonist team voiced? Have you ever played a Final Fantasy game?

by Fasoo - 2007-06-19 08:02

I knew they were trying to put as many characters in the game, and it looks AMAZING. I just OMG OMG when I saw Sephiroth. this game is gonna be the best thing ever. This and Crisis Core are gonna be the best selling game for the psp.

» High expectations..

Well.. We'll see if this is gonna be as good as the trailer wants to make us expect.. As there aren't many PSP beatemups, it's quite hard to lay down any expectations.. Thank god the GoW is coming.. And this.. Must.. Get..

by Nick - 2007-06-19 09:59
» Whoa whoa

whoa. This is going to be a BEAT-EM-UP game!? As in not fighting 1 player vs 2 player Street Fighter type game but an ACTUAL BEAT EM UP GAME?!

That alone makes me want it. Add that it looks something on the lines of KH, and we have probably best PSP game ever...

by Shadownet - 2007-06-19 10:06
» ok...

Yay there's sephiroth!!!!! Because no one could have ever seen Square putting in the second most hyped up character ever. Now they just need to satisfy the Could-fanboys' wet dreams... I want confirmation of the not overrated characters,...

Seriously if Squall isn't in this, im not getting it....

Download it....probably, but i wont pay money for an overrated-character brawlfest

» character appearances

*supposedly* we can at least look forward to all the main heroes and villians from FF's 1-10 being in it. I think Tetsuya Nomura stated that there would be at least 20 characters in the game. So I wouldn't be surprised at all if Squall will be playable. He's actually got a solid chance of showing up.

"had never dabbled with, that is, until next-gen"

which meant until the ps2. they didn't "dabble" with voice acting in before ps2.

Now.

And Squall best be in it... Tired of FF8 being dumped on cuz noone liked the Junction system.

» well

it looks promising but who knows, it could suck like DBZfighting games, but just being too skeptic cause in real the whole DBZ franchise sucks (worst anime ever, besides pokemon, yugioh, naruto, full metal alchemist, ect.).

by Don't care - 2007-06-19 15:39
» FF8

While FF8 might have been good, it wasn't as good as 7. In my opinion Squall is a homo in comparrison to Cloud. I understand the opposing viewpoint though. FF7 is getting a lot more exposure, but what all of the "I can't like something because it's popular" people forget is that it was an awesome game. It was an awesome game WITHOUT the graphics of 8. Feel free to disagree, that's my opinion though.

dbz games from the snes to the ps2 have been awesome, like dbz or not the games are good. Man I've been wanting a game like this ever since I played smash bros melee

by You are entitled to your opinion metalspector - 2007-06-19 18:49
» and we are entitled to ours

DBZ fighting games don't suck, neither does the franchise, or Naruto/FMA. Pokemon and Yugioh are not my cup of tea so I will leave it at that.

Keep your opinion to yourself. No one else cares.

by Who said anything - 2007-06-19 18:52
» about this being a beat em up?

surion, please don't fool other people... Nick, please do a bit more research yourself before you believe what others say.

by sayde - 2007-06-19 18:57
» It's a work in progress

The end of the trailer specifically states that it's still a "work in progress". So Square-Enix doesn't have a release date for us just yet.

by ikuzou - 2007-06-19 19:49
» well, that may be true...

...but the fact that it says that its the 20th Anniversity game pretty much gives it the deadline of before the end of this year. Otherwise, it'll turn into the not-so-impressive 21st Anniversity game... Now, the question is if it'll get to the STATES before the end of the year.

by 1 - 2007-06-19 20:10

if this is going to be a melee Game, they should totally port a version to the PSstore (ps3) and create psp-ps3 vs option, thatd be great +D

by Fasoo - 2007-06-19 22:14
» Just one question.

Why is someone who cries for his dead mommy is loved this much? I mean Sephiroth if you didn't know what i meant.

Ok,I've wasted HOURS on playing seven and I havetn't seen ONE scene like that so excuse me if I call bull.

PS:Why are you *****ing about it?Is it because your favourite villain comes second? *ouch.....that was a burn*

by Christpher7xii - 2007-06-20 02:25
» last gen you mean?

Umm, PS2 isn't considered "next-gen" by any definition. This gen is PS3/X360/Wii, which I can still get by with people calling it Next-gen... but PS2 hasn't been "next-gen" since 2002 at the latest. It's considered Last-gen if anything now, considering its rivals (Xbox and GC) no longer even develop games (aside from multi-system release movie tie-ins).

So I don't know exactly where you're getting the idea they meant PS2 by saying "next-gen". They were just wrong, plain and simple.

by Christopher7xii - 2007-06-20 02:28
» well..

considering Squall is a major character in the Kingdom Hearts series, you know they have love for him.

I hope to ***** Steiner, Vivi, and Yuffie make appearances in this.

by Christopher7xii - 2007-06-20 02:33
» uhmm...?

Dude, Squall is a severe bad ass compared to Cloud. Cloud, as his name implies, just sorta does EXACTLY what people expect / want from him. He makes zero decisions on his own. He's no more than an avatar. I love FF7 and all, but Squall is a much stronger protagonist. He pushes beyond conventional means, always gets his sh*t done, defies all odds... And ya know what? Unlike Cloud, he doesn't spend a chunk of the game in a wheelchair and falls into a pool of lifestream. Oh yeah, Squall also didn't just stand there, 3 feet away, while his chick got killed. Talk about worthless.

the one that cant get the video to play

get DSL

by xGarthx - 2007-06-20 03:09
» Hmmm

Im not saying I dislike Final Fantasy VII, or that I'm a "Cant take something cuz its popular" guy...

But FF8 Really doesnt get the treatment it deserves, FF7 gets way to much representation in everything, especially Sephiroth... They even found their way into FF:tactics.

Squall (correct me if Im wrong here) was the only FF8 character to make it into Kingdom Hearts, and even then they changed his name. -_-

The same could be said about many other FF games, but to a lesser extent.

by FF Fanatic - 2007-06-20 07:37
» omfg! yay

for starters, Squall should def make this game, and I agree with the previous comments regarding FF8, FF7 was hot ***** but I also loved FF8 cuz the story was cool it was just lacking a super villan like sephiroth to give it that edge

but yeah this game def looks like a fighting game to me and hopefully its gonna rock!

GO FF!!!! and PSP , cant wait for FF13 either (drool)

by Christopher7xii - 2007-06-20 08:02
» yeah

Squall changed his name in Kingdom Hearts as part of the storyline. Essentially they were hunting down warriors that might cause a problem, so he changed his name from Squall to Leon (since his name is Leonheart). At one point someone even starts to call him Squall, but then stops.

But negatory on him being the only one. Selphie is in there on the starting stage, Destiny Islands as a kid with Tidus and Wakka.

Ummm... am I the only one that thought FF XI was the best??? *cries* Oh well... you were loved Zidane... you were loved............

by hmm - 2007-06-20 12:40
» FF8

I think 7 had a MUCH better character arc with Cloud than Squall in 8. Whining should not be brought into the argument unless you want me to aim that weapon at your beloved Squall and say that he is the Luke Skywalker of 8. An Avatar who is meant to be an insignificant experiment ascending by choice to the role that he had only believed he was in, is a much more compelling story. The flaws are what makes his character interesting, and all your doing by pointing them out is making a stronger case for my argument that his character has a better arc. Once again, this is my opinion.

by OMG! - 2007-06-20 13:37
» Damn...

It's about time I find someone with the same train of thought as me! Everything was perfect about Final Fantasy IX. Cloud was just...weird because of the way he acted like a ***** in the beginning of the game, and Squall tried to act cool by rejecting everyone's handshakes....-_-

by xGarthx - 2007-06-20 23:17
» Cloud

You could say that about any other final fantasy game...

Stop picking on Squall t3h Emo. ;)

by Fasoo - 2007-06-21 03:37
» haha...

Right. so you havent seen him crying "Mother" there and another "mother" there, etc.

Its not like i care about FFs crappy villains (kefka is an exception). sephiroth is just too overrated, and in all of the RPGs i've played, there are even MUCH more badass characters.

by Fasoo - 2007-06-21 03:42
» Cloud and Squall

To be really honest, they are both emo *****s. Seriously.

by umm - 2007-06-21 16:13
» xgarthx

Umm, no not any final fantasy game. A game like FF8 for example, you could not say that about. Well, you could but you'd be forcing it a bit. The emo bit is funny, because what it does is point out your need to fit into a masculine role that society (or your peers, who are probably adolescents) has defined for you. An avatar of wanna-be manliness. Whereas people who are truly comfortable with "just being" don't need to put on false airs of not having emotions. Take the most interesting character from any novel, play, or movie if they don't have emotions or shortcomings, then they probably aren't human(Probably not interesting either). You need these things to able to relate to them as a human. It's what makes Shakespeare stand apart.

by xGarthx - 2007-06-25 14:50
» Erm....

"The emo bit is funny, because what it does is point out your need to fit into a masculine role that society"
