MY QJ: PSPTouchME concept images

Today at the 0x89 development forums, Harleyg have posted some cool concept images of what the PSPTouchME touch screen might look like. He also confirmed that it will use the USB port instead of the serial port. If the touch screen were to use the serial port, an audio jack would have to be present because the serial port wont be active if not.

This would lead to it having no sound, so now the touch screen will use the USB. Don't worry about the occupation of your USB, as seen on the images and written by harleyg himself, there will be a USB plug on the top of the screen (not actually on the screen it self, but you know what I mean, just look at the picture).

The touch screen may become compatible with the new 0x89 XMB Replacement Harleyg and his mighty team is creating. How cool is that?! And homebrew in the future may also become compatible! If not there would be no use.

number 11 is dumb ass, you dont need 2 screens for ds emu ! the touch screen would be enough, coz for games like DS ridgracers all you do is move the stylus about in a circular motion to steer( but we could just use the D-pad for that rendering the screen usess, which makes the point that touch screen is stupid idea anyways lol) so you could use DS emu with this but using a stylus would obscure the psp screen, so its not even worth it anyways unless you can extend it out past the psp's VDU. anyways DS is bolloks gimickey kidz toy, as people say this would eventually lead to fast web browsing on homebrew web browsers ont he psp if a fully qwerty kb is made of it or a sticker overlay with keys on that are pre-mapped by then microprocessor used for the screen

This is one of Sony's Attempt and Fail Procedures. All this company like to do is steal fresh ideas off of their competitions such as the Nintendo DS handheld system. What is Sony Thinking? This is why Nintendo didnt show their creative controller the WIImote early in the E3show coz they know their competitors will steal the idea and change it around, such as their rival Sony. Its posible to split the screen horizontaly. And have two screens in one. Becouse ds screen is alot smaler, scaled it can fit 2 on 1 psp screen horizontaly (+[][]x). And loading ds roms would be mutch of a problem. But this is only a theory. This is posible but not easy. The ds is a 3d system meaming evan though it has n64 grafix it is still a complicated system.

Why don't you try reading before you post instead of making yourself into a dumbass. Where did it say that Sony as a company was funding this and developing this? Nowhere in the article. This is completely a homebrew effort. Even if it was sony doing it you have to admit that it would take away most of the thunder from the DS because we already have a mic, we have more power, and a touchscreen would just finish it and we would have a more powerful system with the same capabilities of a DS. Hell when was the second screen ever useful? It wasn't and with this our homebrew might be even better than DS homebrew and official DS games. Because we all know that the only game you Nintendo fans swear by that is innovative is Trauma Center. The rest don't even use the touchscreen effectively. But with the power of the PSP we could have better looking FPS than metroid Prime Hunters and better homebrew that rivals official DS releases.

Don't let it surprise you that some of these noobz (read stupid kids) don't have reading comprehension skills.

It just amazes me how many coders/devs actually are more innovative then Sony is. One things I'd change though... make the USB on top passthrough instead of implementing a switch as they indicate. Would make it easier to use and not add another step to the USB connect process. Either that or make it software controlled to where the screen turns off and allows for USB connectivity when you go into USB connect in the XMB. Hell, for that matter coders out there should unite and just write some freaking firmware for scratch to totally replace the SONY one. Now that ***** would rock the community and show Sony who's who! If coders are worried about not getting anything for it in return, then sell it. I'd gladly pay for a custom firmware from the ground up with continued support and updates.

Wow, I will never be amazed at how unoriginal, despicable, sloppy, and idiotic Sony is. They can't come up with innovative ideas, good ideas, or any response to Nintendo, so what do they do? Copy them! Anyone who can still be a fan of Sony should just shut up and stop trying to back up a system that has a bunch of mediocre, sloppy copies of the real deal. Wii is offering a new way to play, Xbox 360 is offering the old way to play in a much better way than Sony will ever accomplish.

As for handhelds, Sony doesn't even have their own market. PSP is not a video game system, and never will be. Look at the reviews, and you'll see constant terrible scores. The only thing keeping the PSP aliev is it's MP3 feature that is more than dissapointing, it's laughable.

This touch screen attachment is a failure towards Sony, and the video game industry altogether. I've lost all faith in Sony, and their future. They've got nothing exclusive to their system.

Touch screens are difficult to program for, that is why there arent many good homebrew games, plus the DS games rule, so there is no need for homebrew games.

I have both the PSP and DS, I love them both but for seperate reasons, dont think that im a nintendo fanboy or that im trashing the PSP, bt come on, everyone knows that nintnedo games (Not including homebrew)>PSP Games

making the hardware is simple, all you need to do is buy a right sized touch screen, adapt it to miniusb, then split the usb port into another one. the hard part will be making a driver for this.

There is NO PLANS WHAT-SO-EVER on making a ds emu. Period.

This WILL be supported by 0x89, the XMB replacement.

Touch screen programming is not diffrent from collision detection, so once finished and a library is done, it will be fairly easy to program.

We already have a few devs who say they wanna support it in their homebrew.

Cant be used in xmb, cant be used in games, can only be used for homebrew games that have been written for it, come on, I know the developers think this is a great idea but its not what the psp is crying out for a t the moment, that woudl be a keyboard (I thought this was work in progress, if it is then correct me please) The psp is disctinctly different from the DS, this is further blurring the line between the two.

I believe that this touch screen is going to work out nicely and will have a ton of uses.

Disregarding all the DS nooblets crowing about how PSP sucks and how they wish they were right about SONY ripping off Nintindo when it comes to touch screen which we all know is popy*****.

As much as I hate SONY I do apploud them for some things and even though they continuously try to block us the PSP is the best Handheld we have seen yet and will continue that record for a long time to come only because of the hand played by the hack Devs.

Er...to all the people who say having a DS emulator on the PSP will prove the DS sucks: if the DS sucks, why in the name of hell do you want to emulate it? You clearly like the DS enough to want to emulate it.

Not that that will ever happen. The N64 and PS1 emulators are still crap; heck, the GBA emulator and the SNES emulator still aren't perfected. There isn't even a good DS emulator for the PC yet! And DS roms are designed to work with two screens, so an emulator would have to, at best, work around that programming. Also, because some games use both screens to show one vertical image, you'd have to hold the PSP sideways to make it look right. I don't know if anyone here has tried the vectrex emulator, but holding the PSP sideways for an extended period of time is not fun. Also, this thing is only in the stages of concept images! It'll be ages before this comes out, if it comes out at all, and by that time the PSP will probably have already died. Even if that's not the case, it will only be used for homebrew, and it will probably be difficult to program; meanwhile, the DS already has homebrew games that use the touch screen, and official games as well.

To 74, yes, most of the posts are about the DS, but most of them are about how the DS sucks, posted by idiots who don't have half the brain power required to understand anything I'm talking about here (people like you, for example). If you WEREN'T a moron, you'd realize that the DS is outselling the PSP by leaps and bounds, and that developers are saying the PSP is dead. Even Square-Enix, who in the past has always supported Sony, is focusing almost exclusively on the DS instead of the PSP.

I don't even know why we're debating this; again, if this thing ever truly comes out, it won't be for ages and it won't be used for much. There will never be a good DS emulator for the PSP before there's one for the PC.

I don't know how usefull it will be though, one idea could be a devhook plugin or something so that the touch screen can be used in the webbrowser and stuff, with some kind of mode switch between keyboard(with a sticker.. or maybe visually through devhook aswell, if possible) or handwriting and cursor (cursor seems quite easy relative to the writing stuff...)

If it will be usable with a notepad homebrew I will most probably buy it

Seriously, there is no need to debate the usefulness of this thing. I personally don't think it will ever come out. Think about it, making a tiny usb device and touch screen controller like the one in the concept art takes $$$. Who will be stupid enough to invest in it? Not to mention there won't be a demand on this thing, knowing that you can't use it with every single official games, or even the XMB.

If you want a touch screen, you may as well buy a DS or wait for PSP2.

Well, this will be used for homebrew only. If Sony picked it up, the would really look like they are ripping off Nintendo's ideas, with the sixaxis motion controller for the PS3 and all. I know that Nintendo did not make these technologies originally, but they made them mega-popular.
