PSP Go! mockup - Image 1

Ready for more PSP2 rumors? Yes? No? Well, ready or not, here we go. This latest batch of rumorlicious rumors comes from 1Up, who apparently has some sources "directly involved with the new system". Some of them we've heard about, some we haven't., so I'll just distill all the rumors into a list so it'll be easier for you guys to wade through, okay? Okay.
  • Sony will unveil the revamped PSP at E3 09.
  • The new PSP won't be called PSP2. Neither will it be the PSP-4000. 1Up believes it'll be called the PSP Go! instead. Because of, you know, those Go! accessories Sony released in Europe. Maybe they're also planning to bring them over to the US?
  • The redesign will come in two SKUS: one with 8GB of built-in flash memory and another with 16GB.
  • Japanese release date is September. The US will get it in late October or early November
  • It won't have a UMD drive, so Sony will have over 100 classic and new PSP titles available at launch.
  • The PSP's buttons will be hidden underneath a sliding screen (see the mockup above). No second analog stick, though.
1Up also speculates that Sony may borrow some design concepts from their Mylo 2 handheld device for a possible 800x480 pixel touch screen and a built-in camera. They contacted Sony about it too, but of course Sony just stuck to its "no comments on rumors and speculation" stance.

I'm still a bit concerned about the "no UMD" feature, though, since it'll render all my UMDs unplayable with the new system. Even if Sony releases all of my current UMD games as launch downloads, can I stil get them for free? I sure hope so. Or maybe Sony could just release an official UMD ripper that re-encrypts the data so it's playable only on the new PSP.

I don't know. All these rumors are making my head spin, and I'm not even possessed. We'll know who's right and who's wrong in the speculation arena when E3 rolls around.

I highly doubt it, because a specific question of the survey Sony made some time ago involved the 2nd analog stick, and I bet almost everyone said "YES".

For the UMD, Sony said in recent press releases they didn't plan to abandon physical media entirely on the near future (say, the next PSP release), so that would be contradictory.

And also, I really doubt the sliding screen thing too. It just doesn't seem like something that would be durable enough for something like a videogame system. Sure, they do it for keyboards on text phones, but whats the worst that would happen if it wouldn't stay open? You can only text with one hand? Who cares! But a videogame system that keeps trying to slide shut is useless.

Mockup is stupid. The Trigger buttons are waaay out of reach for anyone holding the PSP and its weight looks extremely unbalanced towards the sliding screen.

From what i read, the mylo was NOT the most popular thing on the shelvs.. however the PSP pretty much kicks ass so why would they fall back on a not-so-good design? Also, we ARE talking about sony, unless they planned the slow painful progression of the 1k,2k, and 3k units, this new PSP wont be RADICALLY different. Hoever "different" will be fresh and new, so its a good move in their part. Loose UMD please.

They promised us (United States) that the GPS would be released "This year" 2 YEARS AGO. And yes, there used to be a GPS fad in America which is mostly over because every phone on the planet has one now...

on topic: i really, really don't want a psp with a sliding screen... and whatever it looks like it had better have a 2nd analog stick, as it makes it easier for developers and players...

No second analog stick tells me that this might not even be the PSP2 at all, it may only be another PSP1 revision and we'll be waiting longer for the real 'PSP2.'

There had better be two analog sticks on the PSP2. I'm not the only one who's tired of awkward (Sometimes limited) controls in games because the face buttons/triggers are being used for aiming and camera angles 'n whatnot

# about no umd:93pauott 2009-04-29 02:44
maybe you can just return your umd's to your local game store.

then they'll either sell it (if it's without a scratch) or they'll destroy it.

after you have returned it, you'll get a code you can write in on the PSN so that you'll get the games that you returned.

this is how it SHOULD be.

You know the usual UMD's are fat, soo....Why not make games Without the umd cover. Only the small discs. That would be perfect!! Then you could open up your old umd's, get the mini disc out and insert it in your new PSP. If Sony did that, then it wouldn't be called a psp 2 nor a psp 4000. I always wondered why they had the UMD cover and other consoles like the PS3 have normal CD's. Mini CD's might be plausible but I haven't seen anyone mentioning it. The PSP would have more room, no umd door but just a hole where you slide the CD in ?? And the no UMD door means there might be room left over for an INTERNAL camera.

Just by saying it is called the psp go makes me think that it will have built in GPS. One of these rumor things said that Sony sets trends, not folllows them, and no other system has gps. It'd be funny to see what games, if any, use the gps if that is true. A built in camera would make that annoying camera menu option not so annoying...

I Don't see y they wouldn't add a second analog. It wouldn't be very smart for them to ignore what the consumers obviously want. It would give dev's more room.& please Psp taget audience. The probably won't call it the 4000 or the psp-2.It wouldn't be productive. They want U 2 feel as though u are buying a new product. The shoulder buttons won't be that high.maybe on top underneath the flip screen.might make it difficult 2 play if they tried 2 make it a touch screen though. They prolly won't include the Umd.there is more room for improvement without it & ppl r tired of their games breaking ,however they will prolly offer a download service that way you can turn your umd's into a digital format to be played on the new psp.they are proll just testing the name go 2 see how you'll react .

good thing its just a mockup. i bet that the triggers would be behind the screen, also the sliding screen doesn't look heavy for someone to hold right at all. think of a sidekick.

# OH YAY! No 2nd analog stick, modding PSP time.YAMI ANUBIS X 2009-04-29 19:51
I knew there would be another PSP coming out this year, I thought maybe it will atleast have a dual nub to replace the camera button or whatever like how the mod does it but nooooooooooooo!

I will buy this and if they bring out a 2nd analog stick mod for it, I will mod this craptoid thing for making me angry.

Oh I've been angry about this for I don't know since 2005.

Biggest Sony mistake was the analog stick because of there stupidity.

Greatest handheld but button area was not well scripted.

Original PSP button area or design was not designed as well as the Slim 2000, it was poorly done.

Every button was hard to push down for alot of games.

D-PAD was hard for fighting games aswell as the other buttons, they improved it majorly in PSP Slim v1 and then v2, only good thing about original PSP was screen.

They added the left analog stick in at the last minute like lazy people, didnt even think of doing it like a PS2 controller but instead thought like PS1 controller without the sticks.

Its too late now but Sony should have just put in a second analog stick into the PSP like they did the first analog stick, then it would be complete but they didnt think about that and LIED!

Don't you see no comment and so on, they are all big gigantic lies made up by Sony, every company does this, they try to justify the one analog stick.

Anyway I'm tired of waiting for the stupid PSP2, I wanted it and now that I know its this thing, I'm buying a 2nd analog stick modding kit to make me happy.

I know what it does, trust me. I'm just tired. But this PSP will be nice in my collection aswell as a modified 2nd analog stick in it.
