Koller: iPad is a "net positive" for Sony

It seems Nintendo president Satoru Iwata isn't the only one unconcerned by the Apple iPad. Sony's John Koller is also not threatened by the device's gaming capabilities. In fact, he thinks it'll just drive people to buy PSPs.

In a recent interview, SCEA's Director of Hardware and Marketing told the Wall Street Journal that Apple's wireless tablet computer will only serve as an entry point for people who want to move on to a dedicated gaming device.

"Apple's entrance into the portable gaming space has been a net positive for Sony," Koller said. "When people want a deeper, richer console, they start playing on a PSP."

Welcome to Apples user base. Douches who spend almost as much time convincing themselves as they spend trying to convince everyone else that the 800$ Palm pilot was worth it. Or that 1700$ laptop somehow outperforms a measly 700$ Dell (No surprise?) then sticking their fingers in their ears and shouting really loud when people point out actual 1700$ PCs that can outperform a mac book pro with ease. Well in some way he's not, someone smart would think twice before buying this thing. It's honestly a huge iPod Touch really and they said it would cost around $400-$500, I'd rather waste that money on a PS3/360/PSP if I didn't have one. The only people I can see buying this thing are people with old iPods or idiots with money.

It's like a giant iTouch or a smaller Microsoft Surface. Think of it like a combination of Microsoft Surface with a Apple Laptop. It's Expensive like their laptops, and it will fit in your lap, but will act like a Microsoft Surface.

They kind of stole the Surface idea and made it smaller.

My comment was towards the reference to the PSP as "deeper, richer". Really? How do you figure deeper and richer? I'm NO ninty fanboy - I don't even own a DS! But I watch people who do, and I can count a game library with the best of them. I also know that the DS has some depth with its touch screen - what do we have? An analog NUB... Revolutionary...
Sorry guys, but minus the homebrew capabilities (and a much better supported HB community), we have to give the nod to the DS on this one don't you think?

So you would probably buy the ipad then, if you are into the gimick, and not the game?
DS is fun, yes, but if i wanna GAME on the go (and movies and music), i choose PSP.
DS ia a GIMICK, just like the Wii (don't get me wrong, i enjoy playing them, but the Quality is lower for both than the current Gen, Wii uses 6 gen H/W, just a GC in disguise)
It's not all about being Revolutionary (although i think 128 Bit gaming on the go is pretty revolutionary)

I think what they say it's true. While Apple does make awesome stuff, without real buttons there are a lot of issues with "usual" games. If you have to click around the touch screen is perfect, but a virtual button? Please, Bomberman was so damn hard to finish with on screen controls. And i dedcided to play my old PSX Driver instead of the one on the iPhone, because it's absolutely pointless with that kind of controls.
So, in the end if somebody will find a "need" for a better gaming platform there are both the DS and the PSP, but that's only because the iPad/iPod touch/iPhone dosen't have hardware buttons.
And, as already stated, people will do what they find best with their money. No gaming platform, one, all of them...

Apples and Pears.
If I was happier with less graphics capability I'd get a DS or an Iphone. Even though there aren't enough good games on the PSP that take advantage of its capabilities, I still like having the power for that possibility.

Apples will never have top shelf games made for them. It will always be a "popcap" machine as far as gaming (Which unfortunately the PSP is also stalling at right now).

I think the Iphone/Itouch looks like a better gaming experience than the tampad IMO, but I'll still take the PSP if I had to chose one.

Every time Apple Releases a Fail product , they make a crapload of money off of it.

Nothing can bring Apple down, people always buy apple's products no matter how crappy they are.

And im posting this from an iPod touch ( Started as a fail, but turned into some great device. (And to the person having problems playing bomberman on the iPod touch , you must really suck because i played both 1 and 2 and I never had a problem with on screen controls, anyone who does have a problem with it is just unfamiliar with how to use a touchscreen) ).

I don't think they fail - quite the contrary - I think apple is the new "Yuppie" product line. It use to be that anyone who had a Cell phone was a tosser, but now everyone has them, then it was PDA's. Anyone who had a blackberry was shunned by the rest of us (and still are) - so Apple has become the new Wanker factory, pumping out gadgets the no one really needs, isn't functional until about 1000 hours of training has been completed and make you look like a pretencious Bastard.
Not Really trying to put down the people that have these devices, but next time you whip it out on a train or bus, or anywhere public, observe the looks of comtempt you get. Not to say there is anything wrong with you - it's probably just envy (or maybe you are just a wanker - who knows)

I'm a total gadget freak (iPhone, 3xPSP's, a DS and a Clie UX50 make up my main barrage of IT tat) and even I can't see the point of this thing.

An iPhone has all the features of this beast and is far more portable, can make calls and comes with integrated 3G. Even the screen on the iPhone 3GS is brighter than the tablet, so who the hell would want one?

the iPad has a 3g GSM and HSDPA. It is a Big iPhone with Both versions of cellular networks built in - and a faster Processor (and possibly more RAM, but no confimation on that yet)

It seems Apple make one product that defies all possible sense of use, and then the ENTIRE Apple userbase is attacked.

I've got a Macbook, I bought it because I like Mac OS X (I'm BootCamping Win 7 & Ubuntu for school) and I feel safe knowing that if anything goes wrong and I can't fix it, the customer support is gonna be there to help.

I hate the look of that iPad, I hate the idea of it. If I need a 'big-iPhone', Microsoft's getting my money with their Courier.

So come on, guys. Stop generalizing. All Apple users aren't douches, all Windows users aren't tool and Linux users aren't geeks.

No it can't, hardware-wise the PSP is stronger then the DSi but if you base it on games then that doesn't count cause that would fall in to preference. What he's trying to say is if people want to use iPad with games they will eventually move on to something with better graphics which the PSP excels in and he's right on that.

680g certainly isn't light especially when you still have to carry around in a case like a netbook, i'd rather put up with the extra 300g and carry a netbook, and for $500 you can get a good one with ten times that pathetic 16gb non expandable memory in that thing.

Watch, or better, play the game Avatar on iPhone.
Then, try the same game on PSP .

You will be impressed by the difference, controls, feelings, music, playability, etc..

There isn't a lot on the PSP market thats worth it! I swear its probably been two years since something came out that I was compelled to buy. I await, Peace Walker and/or Fireteam Bravo 3 reviews, yet cant shake this feeling of being let down.

koller is absolutely right. this is nothing new - infact china already developed the ipad its real name is P88, which apple stole the idea from. google it pretty much does everything what an ipad does.
if the p88 didnt pick up as well as it should have i dont see the ipad picking up either.

The same people on here complaining are going to be the same people in line buying this when it comes out. We've seen it before with the DSi. People said "so what? it has two cameras and bigger screens," and what did they do? The went right to a retail store and bought it two weeks later. So STFU and stop complaining.
