Insider claims PSP 2 coming pre-Christmas: dual analogs, no UMD, sliding touchscreen and all

PSP2 - Image 1

It looks like the Internet is not happy with a month passing by without any new rumor about the next iteration in the PSP handheld line. Whether it's going to be a PSP-4000 or a PSP 2, an insider source of PocketGamer claims that Sony's going to release it before Christmas of this year.

Why? Despite Sony already shrugging off any threats from other handhelds, turns out they really are planning to release the PSP 2 because of A) the success of the iPhone, and B) the newly released DSi. Now here's how PocketGamer describes the device:

Like Apple's newcomer, the PSP 2 will be a compact device with a large touchscreen. However, where Sony's machine has the edge is when the touchscreen is slid open as it reveals familiar buttons, D-pads and – praise the Lord of Handhelds – dual analogue controls.

This new format should allow for both existing hardcore console titles as well as simpler touchscreen games along the lines of those currently available in the App Store. And like the App Store, (and in the absence of UMD), the games will all be available for digital download via the PlayStation Store.

Ok, where's my waffle-maker baking tray, dammit?

We're notching this as rumor for now, and hoping Sony either A) makes a comment about this within the next couple of days (in which case, they'd be all "we don't comment on rumor and unfounded blahblahblah") or B) announces this baby come E3 '09.

Can we dispense of time wasting rumours and just focus on the facts? Things like this just peoples hopes up.

by LeXiO - 2009-04-07 04:27
» Why bother

Seriously, why post another fake rumor, like all the other fake rumor topics. The PSP2 isn't coming, not anytime soon at least, not even this year maybe. So stop all this dumb rumor ruckus about the PSP2. It's really annoying because no one ever provides facts for such rumors. People are seriously getting dumber by the day.

Seriously, QJ, another rumor?!

» Ok, honestly...

This crap needs to stop. We all know that there is no way sony would be putting all this work into game development and pushing other publishers so hard to produce games for this current gen PSP if it was on the edge of death.

LBP PSP isn't even going to be out until Christmas if gamespot is to be believed, so why would one of the biggest exclusive titles be released AFTER the demise of the console? Wouldn't happen, even with backwards compatibility.

by enigmaticdude - 2009-04-07 05:29
» and the rumor mill spins again.

Why does Qj report rumors?

The title says it all, SONY has not said a word about the PSP getting rid of UMD yet or that the psp will have a touch screen. The touch screen on a psp is useless anyways, there are buttons on the damn system. USE THEM.

by triac - 2009-04-07 05:33

Pre christmas?

That would mean in less than 8 months. And it isn't even announced yet. Its actually the opposite.

Less than 8 months between first announcement and release. No way. Case closed.

"like all the other fake rumor topics"

I assume "all other fake rumor topics" include the phasing out of the 60gb PS3 model, the PSP-2000 (and 3000), LBP for the PSP, new Jak+Daxter... etc etc etc. And almost every time, you guys have to blast us for reporting these rumors?

I don't see any reason why NOT to post rumors. All of these rumors have a chance of happening, no matter how slim. I don't know about this one, it may or may not happen. But that doesn't mean we should turn a blindeye to it.

Of course, if you look around you, the other gaming sites are also reporting about this. I see not why we should be exempt from this.

You're doing a great job at what you do.

And to everyone like "aww, moar rumorz?!"

Shut up. It SAYS it's a rumor, like MANY of which have come true.

No one's forcing you to act like it's FACT. Take it for what it is, and stop complaining. Sheesh.

» ok

QJ or Gino D. You know I love the articles here, and I fully understand why rumors are submitted cause other areas do it too. But could ya at least add rumor on this article name? Please. ^_~

Anyway, I seriously hope this isn't true. I want UMD to be on the PSP2. Now people can attack it or insult it all you want, but when it comes down to storage, you can't argue how much superior PSP has with UMD then Nintendo's DS with it's completely limited space.

I want PSP2 to have UMD slot, so it can be BC for the PSP original games. And I want Sony to try making either a Blu-ray UMD(so it has higher Storage space) or at least make a 5GB UMD space, I mean that would be a dream. I know people like the Digital Downloading or USB to keep games, but there's something about having Physical Copies of Games, imo, that completely owns downloading games. Now obviously some will disagree, and I fully understand, but as a old time gamer from the NES/SNES/Genesis days, I just love physical copies. Someone thought having not only having a second analog but have two extra shoulder buttons would make PSP2 the greatest handheld ever. Now idk how feasible that can be with the extra two shoulder buttons, but a second analog couldn't hurt. :)

» PSP-4000 Description is Impossible.

If this were the case of a new PSP, with a touch screen, dual analog sticks, no UMD drive,

Wouldn't that make the older PSPs obsolete?

And to pull anything like that would be bold.

I personally like having physical media also, and I also agree with UMD being superior for storage, what I'd like to see Sony do is make a faster UMD drive for the next PSP, so games can load faster, touch screen is definately a plus but not a necessity , and I would personally like to see it have 2 analog sticks also for shooters

by Galduke - 2009-04-07 09:12
» Almost a like dream... Almost

This would ALMOST be my ideal handheld system that I once thought of after considering the deficiencies of the DS and PSP except the idea of buying purely digitally. I absolutely REFUSE to buy anything I can't touch unless it makes me money, and if they try to make me with this console I'll go full pirate (I already have the parrot, well conure anyways). Good thing it's just an (cool) unrealistic rumor.

by xtatic - 2009-04-07 10:37

there is just as little evidence to say this IS a rumor as to say that it ISN'T a rumor. this could very well be true.

the LBP arguement is bullcrap, its not like no game has ever switched platform before, let alone a psp-psp2 jump couldn't be THAT hard to do. and the "too soon" arguement, doesn't mean ***** at the rate that technology is advancing these days, 5 years is actually a pretty awesome run time.

shut up and be thankful that you have sites bringing you things to ponder and learn from cause otherwise... you are a retard

» External UMD port?

if there isn't going to be a UMD port in the "new" psp, an external UMD port would make a lot of customers happy. Of course there still could be a UMB port since its a rumor, but if not, this would be helpful.

more than likely the person you talked to lives off rumors and believes every single one of them. back when MGS 4 was rumored to be on 360 as well i bet your source would have said that MGS went multi platform to everyone.

"if the ds/iphone/ipod touch proved anything is that a touchscreen makes games worse"

I don't think the touchscreen alone made games worse. More likely: DS's crummy processing power, and iPhones lack of buttons.

PSP already has performance and buttons, and now they'll add a touchscreen. So PSP2 is just adding the best aspects of all machines together.

by mr.x256 - 2009-04-08 00:28
» Faster UMD

I've said the same thing. Upgrade the Distribution Medium. Making a UMD drive that is faster and has higher capcity ensures backward compatibility and a means of games distribution for the next PSP iteration.

It's the obviouos solution, and will most certainly be the solution adopted by Sony.

doesnt removing PS2 BC from PS3 make the PS2 obsolete.

i would much rather be told the rumours because the you at least have an idea of what might happen....rather than being ignorant and left in the dark. Its good to here others options on these matters rumour or not.

i for one want qj to keep going as is. The people who don't like it don't have to read it, it does say "RUMOUR" in the first line.... and "CLAIMS" in the title. not very misleading i think.

Yeah, don't let these fools get you down. How many companies reveal their plans as soon as they have them down? Everything that happens starts off as a rumor (unless it was somehow kept under wraps for so long). If it never comes to be, no harm done. And if it does, we got to know way beforehand, because of the site.

it be too much like microsofts game plan.

paying extra for stuff (overpriced extra at that) that should of been in the unit in the first place.

ala xbox360

HDD

xbox live

sony will try to avoid this, you'll probably start see the original psp games come out as UMD for original PSP owners and digital for PSP2 owners.

i also think to push people to buy the PSP2. they could make the original PSP games available to only PSP2 users for like 1 to 2 weeks.

since its rumor we can speculate all we want.

lets see what happens in 8 months.

sony can also make a portable umd drive for it, for those people that has lots of umd 's and no old psp to run those umd's with. yeah the two of them.

I am under the impression the PSP2 will be a completely new generation of PSP eg. 'PSP2-1000'.

Therefore the games for it won't run on the old PSP generation (PSP-1000, PSP-2000, PSP-3000) regardless of the storage device (UMD or MEM stick), but it can still playback first gen games.

why dont you try reading comments properly before posting, you'de see that we are all under that impression.

the question is will they dump UMD (which would make PSP games NOT run in PSP2) in favour for pure digital distribution.

» REAL as YOU R!

And like the App Store, (and in the absence of UMD), the games will all be available for digital download via the PlayStation Store or mostly any place on the internet lol!

Well I hope they release this New PSP, I did look at the prototype, looks so cool! Besides, if you want to play your old UMD games, go grab the PSP-Phat or the PSP-Slim or the PSP-Brite, you got 3 choices there! DOn't ask for more! ><

I just have a PSP-1000, I don't care about the other 2 ones, do the same ***** as the first one, but this 4000 would be more than just another PSP, it would be a New Manufactured PSP, "PSP2"

Yeah, probably doesn't come for this Fall, neather this Christmas, but its sure that Sony its already on the Develops of this New Handheld that will rule the Portable Gamming Scence as its doing with the actual PSP's...

I hope they add fun Touch-n-Go! Games Tittles for this new format of play...

» From your comment

"sony will try to avoid this, you'll probably start see the original psp games come out as UMD for original PSP owners and digital for PSP2 owners."

To me it sounds like you are saying that the games for PSP1 + PSP2 are the same, and not an upgraded or enhanced version for PSP2.

Personally I believe that it would be a stupid idea to drop UMD in favor of Digital Distribution for PSP2. They are far more likely to continue with both UMD + Digital Distribution much like they are doing with the current PSP generation.

by Aces In The Palm - 2009-04-10 19:46
» not sure how you got that

i was saying if PSP2 doesnt have UMD

to keep backwards compatibilty they will propabaly release both a UMD and a digital download version.

and whats more to push you into wanting a PSP2 more, it wouldnt surprise me if they released it on PSN first for PSP2 customers only for a short period even though it is a game built for the original PSP.

why?

people are impatient.

they want it now.

if the PSP2 came out and the new God Of War came out on PSN for example, and sony said "this is exclusivly for people who went out and got a PSP2. however original PSP owners can be sure that next month the UMD will be release and the PSN download will become available to you"

its was all one big speculation on what could happen on the PSP2 if sony decided to drop UMD.

i also dont like the idea of a digital distribution unless....sony release the PSP2 with its own internet access (like mobile phone network)

i dont see why i should have to pay twice for a game.

once for the game

once for bandwidth

i'm on prepaid 3g

for $100 i get 10 GB

so a 1.8GB game costs me $20 just for bandwidth.

by Aces In The Palm - 2009-04-10 19:55
» oh

and i do apologize for the condescending remark before

i just thought since it was a reply to an external UMD idea for original PSP games (PSP1) and i put my thoughts across first on why sony wouldnt do that.

i thought it would of been fairly obvious that i was talking about how they would distribute PSP1 games, since its very obvious that PSP2 will be digital distribution only

by mr.x256 - 2009-04-11 14:58
» -

Didn't Sony once say that some major PS3 games would be released on PSN first about two years ago, if so there's no reason why they wouldn't do that on PSP2.

I don't think that Sony will release a handheld that only has Digital Distribution because a considerable amount of the gaming community do not have internet access or have inadequate internet access.

If like you say the PSP2 has its own network then PSP2 would probably drop UMD, if this is the case then Sony should just make it into a gaming phone. It could only help sales.

by Aces In The Palm - 2009-04-12 22:35
» yeah i do remember something like that

but could you imagine waiting for a bluray worth of information to download

or would they compress to DVD9 standard so downloads are 8GB or less i wonder

» Oh crap!
