Homebrewer brings 3D to PSP |

Just when you thought it couldn't be done, homebrew coder Geecko stepped upped to the plate to unveil the first 3D enabled homebrew app for the PSP. As spotted by pomopop over at PSPGen, homebrew coder Wassgha announced yesterday that he is in the process of developing a plugin that will bring 3D technology to PSP using your good ole red/cyan glasses and urged other developers to follow suit with his concept.
Developer's note (translated):
I am currently working on a "huge". This is neither a site nor a homebrew: This is the 3D on PSP! Yes! It is not impossible and I am trying to do, the only drawback is that you'll need a special telescope (Red - Cyan) for 3D on your PSP as the 3DS
So how can I get 3D on PSP?
I am currently developing a plugin that prepares the PSP screen to convert images of "normal" analygraph, he'll just put the Red-Cyan glasses to get your games in 3D! The development will not be easy, but not impossible at all ...
Just after his announcement, homebrew coder Geecko stepped up to the plate to release Cube3D.
Developer's note (translated):
Since the news of Wassgha, I put myself ahead of a sample code for a 3D anaglyph in real time. It's done! It is based on the example "cube" of pspsdk, with modifications of course.
Following features:
- Viewing a cube and eight satellites, which move
- Enabling / Disabling the 3D anaglyph with X
- Adjusting the perspective and angle of view with the directional arrows (values are shown in the top left of the screen)
The rendering is very fast since the sample runs at 60fps. Indeed, the mixture of the two views is almost "automatically" using sceGuPixelMask. The power required is doubled, so we can make any 3D game by halving the framerate.
To test it you will need of course the classic red / cyan glasses.

I'm sure he meant the plugin could be inserted into homebrew aps to make them 3d: perhaps that should be clarified so nobody gets their hopes up.

I think they are trying to achieve what Nvidia did for PC games (the red/cyan 3d view, not the stereoscopic 3d). And it's quite good too. I was impressed playing Batman Arkham Asylum in 3d using the red/cyan 3d.
I am, for one, excited about this plugin. I just hope it wont consume too much power.

Every game uses a different style of using the GE functions. The GE functions in our SDK is different than those in the Official SDK. Also the gu functions are not exported functions so there is nothing to hook.

Sony exec #1: "Looks like our customers want X new feature."
Sony exec #2: "Hm.... how about we do the exact opposite?"
Sony exec #1: "Brilliant! And while we're at it, why don't we remove some features?"
Sony exec #2: "Excellent idea!"
Sony exec #1: "Also it looks like another company is doing pretty well with Y feature. Doesn't seem like our customers are overly interested in it, though."
Sony exec #2: "Well what are we waiting for? Let's rip that $#!+ off!"

Secondly, I sincerely hope this catches Sony's attention and ultimately hire you devs to further develop this application to match that of 3DS.
Keep up the good work.

but i couldnt really find the best game concept fro this tech
hes developing a plugin, well all i can say is good luck
particularly for commercial games
3d requires rendering a scene twice, most game are probably maxed out of rendering capability already.

But i made it in a luaplayer, and the method i used is really slow, due to that luaplayer "alpha effects" system.
I will develop this fully when I get the .obj loading lib that comes with that luaPlayer (luaDev).
Cheers,
Carlos

First off PSP Dungeons 3D had this method of 3D. Didn't a MGS game on the PSP also have 3D?
If anyone if using this as a reason to say "fudge you 3DS and 3D PS3, the PSP can do 3D!", then I actually pity you. Though I doubt anyone is that stupid here.
For real 3D you need a high refresh rate on the display. Something the PSP doesn't have.
