Enterbrain CEO: PSP Go is worse than WonderSwan

Enterbrain CEO Hirokazu Hamamura is not mincing words when talking about the PSP Go. In not so many words, he's not a fan. Oh, and he thinks it sucks worse than WonderSwan.

Wonder what? For those of you who are not aware of this particular handheld, we don't blame you. It was maufactured by Bandai, released in March of 1999 specifically to compete with the Neo Geo Pocket Color and Game Boy Color and basically went down in quiet flames.

So, back to Hamamura and the PSP. Speaking at a marketing seminar, the CEO expressed his discontent with how the PSP Go was designed. He said it was worse than WonderSwan and that the system's cramped design scheme was just not gaming-friendly. This posed a particular concern for Hamamura because of the popular Monster Hunter games.

It just so happens that Hamamura views Monster Hunter 3 to be the best-selling PSP game of all time, and with an expectation of 5 million copies sold over its lifetime, it's really unfortunate that the game can't be maximized to its full potential because of design shortcomings from the end of the PSP Go.

Somehow, I don't think the CEO is the only one shaking his head at the plight of the PSP Go. Maybe that's why we're hearing talks of a new PSP 2?

Seriously, Is the PSP-GO THAT BAD?? All I see is bad reviews and the main thing is the UMD thing. Is it because the majority of you are just poor losers in life and cant afford using your credit card or scared to ask mom and daddy? Rich kids go for the PSP- GO

No the psp go is not that bad. I bought mine just to show it off to friends and now i use it more then my old psps. Its just not friendly with fat fingers and takes a bit to get used to it. Also the little rubber pads on the back it about 200x better since your psp cant slide around and get scratched.

PS. Monster Hunter is just as easy to play on the GO as it was to play on my 1k and 2k.

are you for real? then if you statement is accurate that means rich kids are stupid, I can afford it, but why would I want a PSP that doesnt deliver? why would i want a PSP that plays 10-20% of the entire library? and first and foremost.... why would I want a PSP when I already got one that "it only does everything?"

I have a go and REGRET BUYING IT. It is junlk. you can't even tell how much battery percentage you have left. It lasts for about 3 hours if you are lucky. None of the us games will work in Canada and basically it's just a mp3 player to me. Until homebrew comes to 6.20 otherwise DONT FUCKING BUY ONE!!! I've had 13 other psp's all from 1000 to 3000, DO NOT BUY A GO. No comic store either. Thanks alot sony...fkn thieves

Dude... seriously, you're such a liar. Ive got a Go, its amazing. Much more portable than the old PSPs, I pretty much use all the features, music, videos, comic (yes it does have the store), and especially games... on top of which regular special offers means i can get games dirt cheap off PSN. Whats to complain about?

The Go sucks, PEriod. I rather have a Lynx (google it) :P ...not really but I still dont get what Sony wanted to prove with it, with the PSP (1K-3K) they have proven that there is future for them in a market where Nintendo is not the only choice, they made it clear that we can get home console quality games on a hendheld (you like the games or not since we all have different POV) and still get more than games. with the Go I just don't get it...

just don't buy the psp Go if you don't like it and play your monster hunter on one of the older models

I can understand him preferring the 1K-3K series over the Go but him saying it compromises his game's design is just BS. The majority of his customers are using the 1K-3K systems and the Go is fully compatible so I fail to see what restrictions the Go places on the software.

I really don't see why the PSP Go has failed so bad? I personally bought one on day one of release and am loving the new form factor. It is way more portable to carry around than the standard PSP. Apart from its short comings (PSN download only, no UMD) I can't see why its so bad? Am I missing something?

My hypotheses on the matter is that the majority of people who wanted a psp already have one, and introducing a reiteration of a console as old as the psp is really unneeded. It would be similar to sony releasing a new ps2. I can't speak for everyone tho. That's just my personal take on the matter.

well if u ever had a previous psp console the psp go is uncomfortable, some games come out even later than retail date for DL on psn, not able to change battery(unless with screws), no usb connection, and if u get bored with a game u can't trade it because u bought it digitaly. not to mention u can't hack the Go

I have the fat, the slim, and the go. All of them are good. I like my go the most. Everyone's bitching that it sucks only because that's the popular thing to say right now. None of you guys are original if you never even touched the dam thing. I play games on the go all the time and in fact enjoy that save-state feature cause god it's a life saver on the train to work. I was afraid my hands would get cramp but that has yet to happen. Even when playing something like Rock band which require a lot of hand movement. I have a 16 gig memory stick in there upping the drive to 32 for tons of movies and music that I convert (and buy from the PSN store.)Now if the Go was making a lot of sales the you wouldn't be reading these articles because they would be saying how awesome it is. What Sony should do is make good advertising for it and lower the Go Dam price. Then you'll see the sales jump up higher. But unfortunately Sony sucks at advertisement. Look how long it took them to make awesome ps3 commercials

the only thing that is making the Go! crap is sony's lack of games on the PSN store!

# I agree...Acteon 2010-04-11 06:28
I have both PSP models, and I find the Go's screen sharper and the form factor more portable, so it's always the model I *want* to play games on.

However, the lack of PSN support is horrific. Games are often more expensive than retail versions (which also have special editions) and the late arrival of the select few titles that do get added is hurting it badly. Why Blazblue was 3 weeks late to the party is anyone's guess.

The Go is a luxury, and certainly no replacement for the 1k-3k models which can play multi-region games, carry CFW (making for a better digital model since you can make your own ISO's) and are generally more comfortable over long periods.

Bottom line - I like the Go hardware, I hate the handling of it's library.

I totally agree with you Acteon ... I actually didn't find the Go to uncomfortable to able to play games on for long periods of time. I still have my older 1-2k models as well.

I think one of the greatest strenghts that the Go has is Bluetooth and the ability to sync a PS3 controller to it. When I am home i have it connected to my HDTV .. sync it with one of my ps3 controllers. Its almost like having another home console.

But 1 thing Sony needs to work on is the tiny sound! I almost have to always have head phones or my Stereo BT headset with me to be able to listen to music, watch movies or play games. That or I maybe losing my hearing haha :P

its got a smaller screen, so will be sharper... LOL

But seriously the problem of the cramped button configuration is that its designed for kids / small fingered people, i tried using one in my local games store, with my fat fingers, way too big for the buttons, one great thing about it, is the sliding screen i just love that design.

Yeh this is why I'm still waiting for the GO to be hacked. The PSN updates are terrible. Sony said that from day one, both store shelves and the PSN would have the same library of games. So far the PSN games are lacking. This is one of drawbacks I see for the GO. Also the USB thing annoys me too (its stupid to bring the cable everywhere I go) And yes I do own the other iterations of PSP's. The PSP Slim and Phat. The GO for me is a way better product. More portable and alot more hard drive space to store more games. The PSN needs to be updated with better games! Still waiting for SOCOM-Tactics!

# RE: PSN library...Guest 2010-04-11 11:46
I never understood the dazzle of the extra hard drive space, I use a photofast 2-in-1 card to couple 2 16GB sdhc cards into one big 32GB memory stick for my PSP 1000 fat which is twice that of the Go and ony cost me ~$80. None of these newer iterations have offered any extra screen protection so these claims of "extra portability" that I hear everyone buzzwording, I just don't see. They need to do more than hide the buttons in a slide-out shell if they expect me to pay the astronomical price they're asking for with not so many better features and a few aspects crippling it and in some ways taking away from the loyal customer base who now owns a catalog of games they can't play if their primary unit craps out and they decide to buy a new one.

i like the idea where i can use my dual shock 3 on my psp go it's a shame i think the price tag really put people off and of course for those who wanted to migrate from the original psp can't transfer their own games to the psp go. since sony opted out that option.

A Handheld with a Analog-Stick in the middle of the device can only be fail ;) and they had the chance to add a second stick (for what almost everyone was waiting), does Sony even listen to their customers. All in all the whole idea was just fail not even mentioning that the game library on PSP anyway sucks (by the way i have one since they were sold in Japan) except of some exclusives almost everything else are bad ports that you can better play on a real console.

If Apple makes a games console with front face analogue nubs & buttons as well as touch screen, Sony will be F*cked, its in there best interest to do so, to destroy the competition.
Personally i hope that the Ipad doesn't work out, because most people don't like controlling touch screen games, but for everything else, yes its great for those, web browsing, reading ebooks, etc etc

I pre-ordered the PSP when it came out. I loved the original one, then got a PSP2000(slim) and loved the smaller size but felt it was kinda light and didn't feel as solid. Not that it mattered much. I bought a PSP GO when it came out and other than the lack of titles on PSN I love it. Honestly, if you like Disgaea 1 and 2, there is almost no reason to complain because any way to make Disgaea more pocketable is ideal. I can't stop playing. I also have Monster Hunter Portable 2nd on it, I don't see what difference it would make being on the GO vs the regular PSP. I have average to large hands and I played MH Portable 1 on my regular PSP and MHP2 on my PSP Go. No complaints. Regular PSP is so big I don't want to have that thing in my pocket all the time. I still keep my old PSP for UMD games, but since Disgaea2 I rarely play anything else, sometimes Patchwork Heroes. Price-wise, sure PSP Go is a lot, but it has 16GB of built in flash, plus you can use a memory stick(stupid mini ones...) If you were to buy a brand new PSP3000 $170, then buy a 16GB Memory stick, it's only a little less. I enjoy the portability. But I do have both.

I actually believed all of the lies that Sony told us prior to the machine being released. Everything from Metal Gear Acid to Yugi-Oh right down to Crisis Core, we got NOTHING.

PSN was updated last thursday. And, the best thing they could offer us was some crappy ass Pool game. If it were not for Monster Hunter, I would have loooooooong Craigslisted this machine. Period.

Yes, I am avidly counting the days until the machine is completely hacked. Now, I see why Apple and Nintendo will eventually win the handheld war.

I have a Go and a 1000. I like the Go better. I prefer it for its smaller size, better screen, pause feature, bluetooth, hard drive, and I think its more comfortable to use. It also conserves power in the off mode better.
What I dont like about it:
Battery life - which i understand that a smaller device will have a smaller battery.
Charging via usb can only be done in usb mode - I think this is a problem for all the PSPs when charging via usb.
Region lock on dlc like demos.

If they would freakin port Crisis Core to the PSN store I would stop #^@%#in about how the store sucks. Thankfully they are adding FFIX which was one I was wanting a while back when I got my Go. They do have some homebrew for the go btw. It only has a few things like Pong and now the Old RIN for it. only 1.1 is said to work I think. It is done from the Patapon 2 demo save data exploit. lan.st is where you can find it. I can see both sides. Sony has the PS3 which is still yet to play ISO games, but the PSP was rampant with piracy, so sony, afraid to lose developers (not that alternatives are pirate free) made the GO, promising that it would be hard to hack and put pirated games on it. and to Sonys credit they got what they wanted, a system that isnt pirate friendly or gamer friendly. are developers going to make games that will be 90% legitly sold copies to a market that barely exists? probably not.

To the developers side of the story, most hardcore monsterhunter fans will play this on 1k 2k and 3k PSPs so i dont see what the big deal is, i dont own a GO personally but every MH fan knows that the "Crab finger" camera angle looks painful with the GO.

the whole article is pointless imo, no need to bash the GO because it does what it intends to, people dont pirate on it because not many people like it to begin with... and MH fans wont be playing his new game release on the GO in the first place.

I like my psp go. I had an original phat psp and then finally upgraded to a psp go. From that standpoint the psp go is great. I love how small it is and it is much nicer to hold in my hands than the original phatty. I suppose if you were one of the people who had a psp 3rd gen or something, yes, it would seem silly to adopt a go, but from phat to go, it's a nice step.

# improvement for the GOGuest 2010-04-13 11:28
The GO is a good system but there are flaws that can be fixed by Sony. Before getting into that I want to put in my 2 cents to respond to some of the complains about PSP Go.

First, people should remember that the PSP Go is not meant to replace your other PSPs. It is created for the "digital" people that are always on the go as Sony mentioned. Hence, the smaller size and internal HD. In other words, Sony's answers to Iphone. Also, Sony probably wants you to have multiple PSPs hehehehe.
Second, Sony doesn't want you to be able transfer your UMD games into PSP Go because chances are some people will abuse this and transfers their friends games. How can Sony prevent this? Easy, Sony removes this option, just like the Other OS in PS3.
Third, I can think of 2 reasons for the 2nd analog stick. The first is probably because it's too late to add them. Older games have no use for them since they were never programmed for 2 analog sticks and newer games will need to make sure they work for all PSPs. How would you play a game that requires a 2nd analog stick in older PSPs? Sure the game can have an option to use or not use a 2nd analog stick, but why would developer waste time and money to add an option for 1 system? Second reason is the cost to add a 2nd analog stick. I know, I know people are probably saying bullshit to the cost. But if you think about it, to add a second stick you will need to change the internal hardware - which means more chip(s), wire(s), blah, blah, blah. And then Sony will need to have the QA team test it. Now if you put the 2 reasons together Sony has no reason to add them. Save it for PSP2... maybe :P .

# improvement for the GO - IIGuest 2010-04-13 11:32
So Sony, how can you make sure people by the GO?
- Lower the price by at least $50
- Make it easier for developer to put games on the PSN so the library can be huge
- Guarantee that all UMD games arrive on the PSN at same time as in-store (as promised - derf) - probably ties in with the above improvement
- All UMD games should cost at least 10% less that in-store UMD because Sony should save a bundle on distribution cost if there are less in-store UMD.
- Have the ability to connect to Internet without using hotspots or WIFI. Probably make some sort of contract with one of the wireless carriers (T-Mobile most likely since PSP already uses their hotspots). And yes T-Mobile will most likely charge user a monthly fee but just to have this option is a blessing.
- For CFW apps/themes, let users create them and be sold in PSN via Sony approval.
- Longer battery life, maybe be able to last 30 hours if only listening to music.
- Something other than a clock if the slide is down.
