Enterbrain CEO: PSP Go is worse than WonderSwan |
Listed in: PSP Tags: Enterbrain

Enterbrain CEO Hirokazu Hamamura is not mincing words when talking about the PSP Go. In not so many words, he's not a fan. Oh, and he thinks it sucks worse than WonderSwan.
Wonder what? For those of you who are not aware of this particular handheld, we don't blame you. It was maufactured by Bandai, released in March of 1999 specifically to compete with the Neo Geo Pocket Color and Game Boy Color and basically went down in quiet flames.
So, back to Hamamura and the PSP. Speaking at a marketing seminar, the CEO expressed his discontent with how the PSP Go was designed. He said it was worse than WonderSwan and that the system's cramped design scheme was just not gaming-friendly. This posed a particular concern for Hamamura because of the popular Monster Hunter games.
It just so happens that Hamamura views Monster Hunter 3 to be the best-selling PSP game of all time, and with an expectation of 5 million copies sold over its lifetime, it's really unfortunate that the game can't be maximized to its full potential because of design shortcomings from the end of the PSP Go.
Somehow, I don't think the CEO is the only one shaking his head at the plight of the PSP Go. Maybe that's why we're hearing talks of a new PSP 2?

PS. Monster Hunter is just as easy to play on the GO as it was to play on my 1k and 2k.

its as easy as pie
the only thing that is making the Go! crap is sony's lack of games on the PSN store!

However, the lack of PSN support is horrific. Games are often more expensive than retail versions (which also have special editions) and the late arrival of the select few titles that do get added is hurting it badly. Why Blazblue was 3 weeks late to the party is anyone's guess.
The Go is a luxury, and certainly no replacement for the 1k-3k models which can play multi-region games, carry CFW (making for a better digital model since you can make your own ISO's) and are generally more comfortable over long periods.
Bottom line - I like the Go hardware, I hate the handling of it's library.

I think one of the greatest strenghts that the Go has is Bluetooth and the ability to sync a PS3 controller to it. When I am home i have it connected to my HDTV .. sync it with one of my ps3 controllers. Its almost like having another home console.
But 1 thing Sony needs to work on is the tiny sound! I almost have to always have head phones or my Stereo BT headset with me to be able to listen to music, watch movies or play games. That or I maybe losing my hearing haha

But seriously the problem of the cramped button configuration is that its designed for kids / small fingered people, i tried using one in my local games store, with my fat fingers, way too big for the buttons, one great thing about it, is the sliding screen i just love that design.

I recently posted on my new blog a comparison to the 1000 and GO. its alot of pictures. and I even have pics of MH playing on both systems.

Personally i hope that the Ipad doesn't work out, because most people don't like controlling touch screen games, but for everything else, yes its great for those, web browsing, reading ebooks, etc etc

I actually believed all of the lies that Sony told us prior to the machine being released. Everything from Metal Gear Acid to Yugi-Oh right down to Crisis Core, we got NOTHING.
PSN was updated last thursday. And, the best thing they could offer us was some crappy ass Pool game. If it were not for Monster Hunter, I would have loooooooong Craigslisted this machine. Period.
Yes, I am avidly counting the days until the machine is completely hacked. Now, I see why Apple and Nintendo will eventually win the handheld war.
They actually CARE about their customers!

I don't think the Go sucks monkey balls though :)

What I dont like about it:
Battery life - which i understand that a smaller device will have a smaller battery.
Charging via usb can only be done in usb mode - I think this is a problem for all the PSPs when charging via usb.
Region lock on dlc like demos.

I think we all agree that Sony aren't very good at this whole "online" thing. PSN has probably been their biggest weakness this generation, and sadly, from the interviews I've read, they just can't see it.
Very sad.

you cant pirate anything on psp go, and the screen is smaller so its "harder to see"
but seriously. who wants a psp that you cant pirate on? nobody.

To the developers side of the story, most hardcore monsterhunter fans will play this on 1k 2k and 3k PSPs so i dont see what the big deal is, i dont own a GO personally but every MH fan knows that the "Crab finger" camera angle looks painful with the GO.
the whole article is pointless imo, no need to bash the GO because it does what it intends to, people dont pirate on it because not many people like it to begin with... and MH fans wont be playing his new game release on the GO in the first place.

HAHAHAHA That's what I've been saying this whole time forget homebrew on the Go just buy a 3000 they still slanging them...

First, people should remember that the PSP Go is not meant to replace your other PSPs. It is created for the "digital" people that are always on the go as Sony mentioned. Hence, the smaller size and internal HD. In other words, Sony's answers to Iphone. Also, Sony probably wants you to have multiple PSPs hehehehe.
Second, Sony doesn't want you to be able transfer your UMD games into PSP Go because chances are some people will abuse this and transfers their friends games. How can Sony prevent this? Easy, Sony removes this option, just like the Other OS in PS3.
Third, I can think of 2 reasons for the 2nd analog stick. The first is probably because it's too late to add them. Older games have no use for them since they were never programmed for 2 analog sticks and newer games will need to make sure they work for all PSPs. How would you play a game that requires a 2nd analog stick in older PSPs? Sure the game can have an option to use or not use a 2nd analog stick, but why would developer waste time and money to add an option for 1 system? Second reason is the cost to add a 2nd analog stick. I know, I know people are probably saying bullshit to the cost. But if you think about it, to add a second stick you will need to change the internal hardware - which means more chip(s), wire(s), blah, blah, blah. And then Sony will need to have the QA team test it. Now if you put the 2 reasons together Sony has no reason to add them. Save it for PSP2... maybe

- Lower the price by at least $50
- Make it easier for developer to put games on the PSN so the library can be huge
- Guarantee that all UMD games arrive on the PSN at same time as in-store (as promised - derf) - probably ties in with the above improvement
- All UMD games should cost at least 10% less that in-store UMD because Sony should save a bundle on distribution cost if there are less in-store UMD.
- Have the ability to connect to Internet without using hotspots or WIFI. Probably make some sort of contract with one of the wireless carriers (T-Mobile most likely since PSP already uses their hotspots). And yes T-Mobile will most likely charge user a monthly fee but just to have this option is a blessing.
- For CFW apps/themes, let users create them and be sold in PSN via Sony approval.
- Longer battery life, maybe be able to last 30 hours if only listening to music.
- Something other than a clock if the slide is down.
