Dissidia Duodecim is the end of Dissidia... but not exactly

In late 2008, Square Enix put a new spin into the Final Fantasy franchise with Dissidia: Final Fantasy. The game brought together major protagonists and antagonists from Final Fantasy I to XII and had them brawl it out in a three-dimensional action RPG/fighting game. Later this year, the company will be releasing a sequel called Dissidia Duodecim: Final Fantasy. It will feature more of the same stylized fighting action and will have an expanded roster and set of gameplay features.

If you really loved the direction Square Enix took with Dissidia, then make sure you get Duodecim. According to Duodecim Creative Producer Tetsuya Nomura, there won't be a next one. When asked where they would be taking the Dissidia series next, here's what he told this week's issue of Japanese gaming mag Dengeki PlayStation.

"There is no next," Nomura replied. "We're thinking about ending this pattern of Dissidia here. There also won't be a UT [Universal Tuning, the name for the international re-release of the original Dissidia] version. The overseas version is being released at nearly the same time and has the same tuning, so we're not thinking about a release [of a UT version]."

The end of the current Dissidia pattern -- the one with all the 3D fights -- doesn't necessarily mean Square Enix is done with the brand, however. It may still show up in the future, albeit in a form different from the first two games.

"For the Dissidia series, there's the possibility of it appearing in another form," Nomura explained. "However, we feel that we've done all we can with the battle base. We had the staff work for years on one on one battles, so I'd like to let them do another genre. I feel we've done all we can with this pattern of Dissidia. However, it is exciting to see past characters revived in 3D. So, if given the chance, we'd like to do something as Dissidia. however, I don't think it will be this Dissidia."

Dissidia Duodecim: Final Fantasy will be released in Japan on March 3, 2011. The North American launch has been set for March 22, 2011, and the European launch for March 25, 2011.

I wonder what direction they'll take it to next time. Personally, I'm just about ready for a new turn-based strategy FF.

Interesting. I'd fancy they do the dissidia 3rd game in retro RPG format. That would be refreshing for the developers and give RPG lovers something to rave about.

Also thanks for the one-page!!!

When I saw the quote "we'd like to do something as Dissidia. however, I don't think it will be this Dissidia." I though: well, they are about to create another CG movie for this :P Or maybe they mean that the next dissidia will feature a party of more than 2 characters and be on the NGP or 3DS? (they did say they like the 3D character design).
