Details on Atari's Dungeons & Dragons Tactics now out |
Ó
No need to break out the dice this time because Atari is releasing the newest D&D game for the PSP, Dungeons & Dragons: Tactics. Developed by Kuju Entertainment, it was amazing how they seem to have been able to cram so many elements of the D&D system which captivated so many of its pen-and-paper fans onto a handheld game. The game will be using the current Dungeons & Dragons 3.5 rule-set, which include all core characters plus the inclusion of two Psionic classes, the Psion and the Psychic Warrior. You basically take control of a party of up to six adventurers through the single-player storyline in a turn-based style strategy game associated to other games which it shares to the title "tactics" with.
The different choices you make through the game affect your alignment and how the flow of the story turns out. A system not unlike the Neverwinter Nights series, another well-known D&D game released by Atari.
However, the major difference here is the wireless multi-player system that the developers have taken a lot of time creating for the game. Players can play cooperatively through the single-player campaign or take them on in a more antagonistic role. Also, downloadable content will be made available to extend gamers' experience.
Anyone who's a fan of the tabletop counter version will definitely enjoy themselves with this handheld package.

The menu system is so long winded it really does kill off what could have been a great game.
The inventory system is the biggest weakness.
this should be good to all you geeks who played this in the eighties. Like the two parents who got to prison by playing this all the time and forgetting their kids.
I find that I am walking in the wrong direction to get to the enemies. They should have had an autotargeting system while walking...or something.
The menu looks like it was actually made with a bigger screen and mouse interface in mind, which they then switched to the PSP. Without bothering to resize the font, all the text boxes are like two words wide, making it all but impossible to read the information in a pleasant, meaningful way.
A real shame cos it totally wrecks an otherwise cool game.
I've been playing this with few breaks for the past couple of days (basically I just began summer break) and I find the biggest issue I have with it is outside of combat.
When adventuring I wish a could set up a macro or something though, I have three casters casting buffs at the beginning of adventures and even though my party is only level 5 I find myself taking a fair amount of time just to cast.
And then the other issues, rangers are gimped compared to them in D&D normally, as it stands they seem to be one of the worst classes because of what they lost compared to what they had.
And to add to that, it is set closer to the 3.0 rule system rather then 3.5 for many aspects. This just means for me and some players that it takes a little getting used to the old system.
Though I do miss cross-classing.
And lastly, I find myself going through my books occasionally simply because the manual wasn't detailed enough and the help thing doesn't cover the important aspect of many things involved with leveling up.
Still, I figure this game is a keeper since it is very close to a portable D&D and if I get my GF a PSP and a copy then we are set for mini adventures.
