Dear Sony: firmware 3.00 disappointments and more

For those who aren't in the know, firmware 3.00 has been released (a "more updated" firmware has been released to fix a bug, and it's called 3.01), and along with more stringent security measures, this firmware allows users to play PlayStation games in their PSP and PS3 connectivity, among other things. And nope, it still doesn't have homebrew support, which dampened the mood of some PSP users who were anticipating the feature.

Anyway, updating your beloved handheld to this firmware is entirely up to you, so we won't dabble on it here. But as you know, your opinion always matters to us here in QJ, so we encourage you guys to share with us your thoughts on various matters. And so, one of our readers sent in his thoughts to us AND to Sony about his disappointment with firmware 3.00.

Here's the letter Evan sent us:

I'm sure you agree that Sony's new 3.0 firmware fell far below the bar as far as everyone's expectations. It's obvious that Sony's greed has taken over its desire to please its loyal customers. This is the email I sent to Sony:

"Sony, I am disappointed. VERY disappointed. You are ripping customers off by forcing PS1 games to be loaded off the PS3. I helped make you what you are today- I have nearly 40 PS1 games in my basement that I bought, and this is what you give your loyal customers? I want to be able to get onto the playstation store FROM my psp and buy (yes, that means me giving YOU money) what I want. Look, customers want to spend money on a good service, but they won't if you are obviously pinching them for more money. I mean think about this- people are most likely going to buy a game from the P-Store that they already own and enjoy. But thats just not good enough for you; you force them to buy a 600 dollar console just to do it! Not only that, but people have been waiting for 3.0 for a long time now, and it is a true disappointment; No new functionality and more security. Besides simple aesthetic changes, no new really functionality has even been added except in the case of PS3 owners. And US users can't even get games from the P-Store yet!

By the way, I am most assuredly buying an Xbox 360 for my siblings this year. Ha, Sony's respect for their customers has fallen below Microsofts'! You have hit absolute rock bottom sony!"

I encourage you, QJ, to encourage disappointed users to contact Sony and complain. This is the ONLY way for things to improve. Post an article, point QJ users to the consumer support page, just do anything to help kick sony in the ass and propel its handheld to its true potential!

There is no reason for these shortcomings!

Man, I have been a loyal Sony fan for a long time, and I still have faith in them. However, what they are doing with the PSP and the PS3 connectivity for the download of PSone games by the force of using the PS3 is absurd! I don't know what the hell they are thinking. They seem to be falling short of expectations, and the media and the customers are getting more and more pissed at Sony.

For Sony's sake and for the loyal customers, I hope Sony wisens up and start living up to expectations. They need to start thinking more about "ease of use," instead of trying to make people buy something they won't have for a while.

I would love to have a PS3, but I know I won't have one for a while, at least until next Christmas.

here here, some of us cant afford a PS3 and a HDTV, and the PS3 is not even out in the UK so what the hell is the point in making psone games available through the ps3? Ill have to wait till march 2007 till that happens- why?Surely its making sony loose potential customers, and more hackers willing to make a homebrew psone emulator. to me sony make no sense and are just being stupid.

Microsoft has small customer respect ?!?! You have to be kidding me. Microsoft has always been helpful to me with my Xbox 360, the first time it broke they apologised and instead of taking it in they asked the store I bought it from if they could give me a new one and have them pay them so I didn't have to wait. Nintendo and Sony dont have this level of customer support. As well as Microsoft going out of their way to get other console exclusives on the Xbox 360 im not sure how much more respect you could have for a customer in the console business.

If you ***** you can't afford it, and your over the age of 16, GET a Job. even at minimum wage it would only take like 2 months to have more than enough for a PS3, and HDTVs, if you shop reasonably are fairly cheap.

The reason you got dissappointed with firmware 3.0 is because you ACTUALLY believed all the rumors that appeared on QJ.

Sony is thinking about making money. That is what a joint-stock company does. Are you a stockholder? NO, because if you were, you'de be asking SONY to get more money.

I am almost sure that when all the good Playstation 1 games start becoming available for download, Sony will open the Playstation Store on the PSP. Until then, QUIT YOUR WHINING. Either way, if you prefer homebrew, then you will not upgrade.

a ton of stuff, like how europeans can't do anything untill next march (at the earliest), plus how homebrew is coming along soon we won't really need Sony's stuff. The PSP-X emulator is coming along nicely.

He could also have pointed out that allowing forms of homebrew can help the PSP sell by allowing more people to code for it and allow people to get some nice simple games in between playing the proper UMD games etc.

The weak point in the letter is that it touches a little bit on fanboyism "Ha, Sony's respect for their customers has fallen below Microsofts" and threatening people is never good in letters.

It's a good idea though for everyone to send a letter or email to Sony asking for the same thing, the allowing of homebrew!

some of you guys really need to chill out. Just be a little more patient, and downloads not requiring a PS3 will come. Be happy for what you got. They could have stoped at firmware 1.5 and not released any aditional features at all, but somehow everyone finds something to complain about. I'm sure most of you already have a PS1/PS2, so play your ps1 games on there. It's not like they've released Final Fantasy VII for the PSP. So untill that happens, I'm sure you can find some good PSP games to play in the meantime.

I really don't think that the reason that the functionality of the psp is being limited due to Sony wanting you to get a PS3. They know that they are going to sell out every system in the next 6 months, they are arrogant and *****y. I believe the true reason for not having the playstation store linked directly to the psp is where they have a lack of confidence - stealing software. Yes, they are afraid that if they offer a way to put ps1 games to the psp without another, valid, piece of hardware will inspire people to simply bootleg roms and use the emulator they spent the time to create. It's a valid fear, as most of the psp owners I know don't even buy games anymore, and that's sad. Also, the limitation of the size of the firmware has posed the new question - what the hell can be dropped so that we can run a fully operable PS Store on this handheld.

That's my 2 cents... but I am confident in my reasoning.

I don't understand it guys, You pirate Iso's, claim you don't want to upgrade because of no Iso support, then when you finally have to pay for something, you go and strike at the company that brought you the system in the first place. Also, they have even said themselves, that they are working on getting the PSP Infrastructure up, so you CAN download your Ps1 games. And also, you do realize Sony loses almost $250 dollars on every console they make....While Microsoft just put a Pentium 3 in Xbox, and Pentium 4 in 360, with Westwood Digital Hard drives, and Philips Dvd Drives....Your paying for new technology. I think we're jumping to a conclusion too quickly here. The PS3 and the store has barely launched. Before we say Sony is forcing us to buy a PS3 to play legacy PSOne games on a PSP, maybe wait a few weeks/months and see where this goes. I highly doubt that would purposely exclude the PSP Community. I'm thinking this was more of a poorly coordinated or planned launch more than anything. But I could be wrong. Just my thoughts here.

ANother reason would be that downloading to a PSP takes forever, and the RAM is very small. It takes 20 minutes to stream a podcast, now imagine downloading a 500mb file!

They will make the PSx games available for download to a PC or Mac, and then you can transfer them to your PSP using a USB cable.

At least that's what I think.

wow you people are picky about the news you read. Every single one of you see the negitive and skip the possitive. For what? bashing sony bandwagon? sure seems like it. Sony have said themselves that they are going to have it so you can only get them off the ps3 IN THE BEGINNING, then once everythings set up and worked out, youll be able to get your ps1 games straight off the site to your psp, your computer, where ever. The only reason its for PS3 only right now is to work out any server bugs and glitchs with a lower number of users putting strain on the servers. Yes it creates another incentive to get one, yes its more money, but its also bragging rights and reasonable. Like the Europeans, wait a few *****ing months, you can hold out for firmware hacks but not for a few games? Thats sad. Quit your *****ing bashing and get the news straight.

The PS1 GAMES WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR EVERYONE WITHIN THE NEXT FEW MONTHS FOR PSP, THEN WILL BE ABLE TO BE PLAYED ON PS3 IN A FUTURE FIRMWARE UPDATE. SO COOL OFF AND QUIT FORGETTING THE POSITIVES.

Its the whole tilt thing all over again, sony hinted at it in e3 2005, but people forgot about it cause of the CGI thing, so when Nintendo announced it before sony did, sony magically became a copycat. Xbots joined in with the home button (which started on the psp not your 360). The batteries, delays, ect. When will this ***** be tired of already?

The fact that sony still doesnt want to cooperate with homebrew is just stupid. now only a few ppl will upgrade to 3.01. even though this comment doesnt really affect me( since im 16 + i have a job). im not willing to buy a ps3 out of the blue JUST to play ps1 games.I bought psp to use ALL of its features quite readily and not have to pay more to use more. thats like having a computer with a bunch of games, and sick apps but being unable to use it because u have to "pay more" so it is enabled.why the fuuuk wud i wanna do that? With FW1.50 we learned not to use any Sony upgrade anymore and still all you people want to upgrade.....only for a stupid emulator to play 10 year old games, and you even have to pay for those games. Everytime the big company's like Sony say we don't buy the game but only a license to use it, but if you own a license for it Sony wants you to pay a second time...and complaining that I steal if I download an ISO to test a game cause there are almost no demo's available. Well, making people pay for a second time if they own a license for a (old) game is stealing also Sony !!

BTW, the PSP is a great piece of hardware, but remember that the Playstation(1) was partly developed by people who devoloped the Commodore Amiga computer, so if you want to emulate something, try PSPUAE

I mean, the PS2 had homebrew and !$0, but it only boosted the sales. The PS2 was huge. None of Nintendos consoles had a chance. And the PSP went of pretty well too, only that the sales weren't increasing as much as usual when Sony decided to block the $h!7 out of homebrew, and then the NDS (I know, no bad words, but I had to mention it :D) took over the market. Even I bought one. And I used to be a PlayStation fanboy.

I understand that everyone wants homebrew, and so do I (in fact I still have 1.5 just because I don't want to lose it), but there's a legal reason why they won't do homebrew. As you've seen, people have emulated SNES, NES, Genesis, etc. on the PSP. If Sony didn't do anything to try and stop that, Nintendo, Sega, or any other company can claim lost wages and wrap Sony up in a nice, long legal battle.

I'm not saying it's likely, but I think they see it as better safe than sorry.

But I do agree that Sony is messing with it's customers, which is something I don't appreciate. I'll be buying a Wii and/or a Xbox 360 before I get a PS3.

I've been a Sony fan for a while, and I still am. Even though I am a fan, doesn't mean I can't be disappointed though, and I am to some degree. The thing about Sony making money though in this situation isn't really true at all. Sony actually loses money for every PS3 they sell, so to say that they want people to buy a PS3 just to buy ps1 games on the PS3 doesn't make any sense. It makes sense though for them to offer that function to PS3 users first though, because it may encourage a few people to pick up a PS3. Sony said that we will be able to directly download the games to the psp in time, but if they don't have that feature up an running yet, then they don't have it up and running. If they jumped the gun, they could release games that are easily shared between people and be pirated like there's no tomorrow. I think their just playing it safe at the moment, but I'd really like to see the direct downloads to the psp come soon. Homebrew on the psp is just out of the question though, as blocking it prevents viruses being spread at a huge scale...and think of this: People run isos even when Sony trys blocking out homebrew completely, so if they allowed any sort of homebrew at all, you can bet that isos would be running almost instantly....which is bad..

Obviously we all know that Sony's customer service has never been awe-inspiring, especially in comparison to their competitors at Nintendo and Microsoft.

I do believe that it is in the players' (yes, that's us) best interest to let Sony know how we truly feel about their methods regarding how we can play the games they sell. If you don't like that idea, I respect your opinion, however, disagreeing shouldn't stop anyone from speaking out.

If Sony doesn't care about the customer enough to stop trying to scam us, then that's their loss. People will boycott through Wii sales, most likely.

I would have thought ppl would stop upgrading by now, I only had to downgrade once to learn my lesson (over a year ago from 2.00 to 1.50 cuz my PSP came with 1.52) I can't believe ppl are seriously still upgrading, especially with site like this posting all the hacking goodness (hey they are right 85% of the time, that's not so bad.) IMHO opinion, the so called "hackers" are actually programming geniuses. They do better work than sony. Sony used to care about it's customers alot, more so infact than any of its competitors, but those days are long lost to the tyranny of sony finding new ways to stop us from getting what we want from our PSP's. Most of you guys missed the WHOLE point of the letter. It wasn't about him whining about the games. Just the whole firmware upgrades. When has there been an upgrade with a significant change? About 90% of the firmwares was just to block homebrew. That's just pathetic. The PSP can do so much with homebrew, but Sony keeps on blocking it and making worthless upgrades.

Look at the bigger picture. versions, 1.51, 2.01, 2.5, 2.7, 2.71, 2.81, 2.82. Can we all agree that these firmwares didn't provide a significant upgrade? These were only meant to block homebrew. They came out with some other features just to cover their tracks.

however this is the kinda behavior i expect from some open source community, not SCEE an empire non the less.

there are millions of other ways to promote a console but why even try them on one thats destened to fail blu ray is a good concept but the kinks need to be worked out right now the laser goes hopelssly out of allignment if you breath on the casing to the console to hard bady sont should just focus on impriving cds rather than going to somthing years ahead of its time

i hate the idea that u need to purchase a ps3 to play ps1 game on ur psp. I think what sony should of done was AFTER the relase of the ps3 they should of introduced the psp as an accessory. Thats all its going to be nowadays with the ps3 being in your living room. The psp will be the travel accessory with the ps3 as its base station (sorta).

Homebrew can do so many things...make the psp a computer, make games, make programs-this is partly why I bought a psp, because there was a possibility. It's not just us from QJ.net who know about this, it's nearly EVERY psp user. I personally feel letdown after waiting months for a new firmware-3.00, to see it with some new aesthitics and some things I can't even use(ps1 emulator)(camer a). I was expecting an organizer, password protection (when it turns on), *homebrew, more codecs, updated flash, Java(not javascript), and some other things. If they run out of space, why not expand to the memory stick. We need to start complaining to Sony about this. They are rapidly becoming my most hated brand, they have always given less than we want, or something different than what we wanted-like ps3, I didn't ask for Blu-ray, I didn't ask for an unaffordable 500-600$ price tag, I didn't ask for a "super console"-all I wanted is some innovations. Innovations do not have to be technologically advanced, just fun(i.e. wii). I am regret that I even downloaded it in the first place...

People complain about a system that costs more, yet does waaaaay more than the xbox. People are over looking the fact that the ps3 is 20x better than the 360. First off, the 20gb ps3 is only $100 more than the 20gb xbox 360. And no kidding, i mean, theres no comparison. The ps3 has all these capabilities, and their only charging $100 more. They would be stupid to charge any less; they're already losing more than $200 per system. If you people love the 360 so much, go out and by one; meanwhile I think I'll enjoy the console with better graphics, 3x the memory, internet browsing, and sooooo much more. Not only that, but have you seen the 360 go down in price yet? Noooooooo. Has the PSP gone down in price yet. Yes. Sony will drop the price of the console a lot sooner than xbox probably. If you're complaining about the price, then wait, or sell your old ps2 and games or something. You'll see; the ps3 owns, no dominates the 360 in every catagory. Good job Sony!

fck sony thats why the wii is gonna win. ps3 is gonna be the gamecube of sony, just watch. with the psp all the good ggames are remakes and that pisses me off. they cant even make a game like final fantasy for it instead they annonce they are remaking FF7 and making us pay $40 for it. thats just rediculius. i spend more time on my ds than on my psp. i spend more time on my gamecube than ps2 (ps2 is crap, it cant read games like every three years u own it). and now i havent even considered buying ps3 but i got my Wii in my living room right now cuz nintendo sure can make your money worth while. i used to be a sony fan but when i see things like this i see that their just in this for the money. they dont care about their fans.

simple answer... yes i have and i own 9 games, psp games tend to be too short or get boring quickly (GTA LCS... bored me after a week)

I hardly use my psp these days, when i first got it i used it all the time, now i dont even use it as an mp3 player, my PDA does a much better job (and the PSP volume is crappy)

PS1 emulator on 3.01 without using the ps3 will come, and lets face it being a euro person i wouldnt actually get to buy a ps3 till july/august 2007 (they will be sold out for at least 4 months after launch) and by that point im sure sony will have sorted the downloads to not need to use the ps3.

Either way until theres some decent ps1 emulation my psp will stay on a shelf gathering dust (and yes you may all scream use the homebrew... but homebrew gets freaking boring after a few months, i mean sure its cool to watch videos, but its also much simpler to watch them on a pda... homebrew does get boring and v quickly!)

so to sony from me i would say, bollocks to homebrew just give me FF7/FF8/FF9 on ps1 emu for psp! oh and maybe the crash bandicoot games please! i dont mind waiting a while as long as i know it will happen!

oh and another thing, as mentioned earlier, jesus americans on here whine so much about everything! i mean why cant you all either use your psp legally or learn manners/patience!
