Another "Unconventional" Ad From Sony - UPDATED |

Just to be sure I wasn't being hypersensitive, I showed the picture to my girlfriend, her reaction, "Oh my God!' Then I showed it to my brother, who looked at it for a second, and then his eyes widened, "What the...!?!" So what do you guys think, is Sony just naively innocent, or are they just looking for attention any way they can get it?
UPDATE 1: Some new images have been found on the Dutch PSP homepage, which would seem to lay out the rest of the ad:

So they both get to have a go at each other, that makes it ok right? Not really, personally I still think the ad smacks of irresponsibility, and it's an underhanded and a sneaky attempt to cash in on public sentiment. Is it bold advertising? Yes, but as an artist who has done a lot of work in the advertising field, I have to say it's a very cheap move. Thumbs down on this campaign Sony.
For clarification, I feel that I should point out that while the ad itself is not necessarily racist, or promoting racism, its implications are of a questionable and tasteless nature.

I don't get it, are you suggesting this particular ad is somehow offensive or controversial??
There's nothing suggestive about this ad at all! I'm assuming you're thinking its a race thing or whatever, but uh... no, just no. You're reading too deeply there Freud Jr...
Clearly Sony is TRYING to make controversy.
All the inevitable protesting that this ad will cause will get lots of news coverage, which won't show the ad of course, but will lead to lots of people going online to see the ad plus lots of other Sony information.
Sony WINS when people flock to see their advertising.
Meanwhile, any lawsuits can be tied up in courts for years and won't add up to the amount of coverage and publicity they got at society's expense.
Dirty pool, Sony! Dirty pool.
... I wonder if this would have been considered controversial say 30-40 years ago...
SONY IS BECOMING DIRTY MY FRIENDS.....
I dont see whats wrong with it?
Saw it on YTMND at least 3 days ago. I agree with Dumby though, this is GREAT publicity isnt it?
that sucks. I like the black psp way better then the white one-
Sony stupid ads are getting annoying... Sure there funny, but I think there striving to be "controversial" with these ads to get attention... But even if they are funny.... they still are quite stupid...
What's so unconventional about a white woman holding a Phantom of the Opera mask?
...wait, let me turn up my screen brightness higher..
...
...
oh... there he is.
@Quzz
if it was a white guy on that ad, you´d be thinking differently.
it´s the woman who saves it from being controversial.
thats kinda nazi of them sony make so many stupid ads.
Where is the white PSP coming out? Europe or America? Or both?
It looks a bit to arty-farty to me, probaly look better on the back of Esquire or GQ advertising some Calvin klein perfume!
I dont think it looks racisist at all, just *****!
its already out in europe
The white psps actually get dirtier than the black ones because dirt and smudges show up better on the black one. But I still have to admit, the white one looks pretty good.
the ad tries to be edgy but just ends up being stupid. its too easy to misinterpret the ad. they should just stick to something simple: half-naked chix playing a white psp. done. no race involved. just sexism like all other ads.
It's a fact of life, some people are white, some people are black. I dont see how its "ill-advised" to have an ad like this which is simply using some of the diversity in our society to promote thier product. It happens all the time in everything, constant references in films etc to how white men cant play basketball........ is that also ill advised? I dont think so....
Europe has the white one for few months *****
just like i thought theire red and white psp ads over the UK were good - these adverts are different, and stand out to people.
#10 - about the white bits; it means tan lines (i take it you're american) so the advert really was saying 'nude pics of my girlfriend here'
i dont think the ad is racist at all. i think its a very clever, metaphoric advert. it uses people in the place of the psp..think how boring it would be with a balck and a white psp alongside each other...using people brings the ad, and even the product to live..there just happens to be black people and white people to represent the PSP's
wow those sony bastards how dare they point out skin colour in an ad how dare they...seriously though that isnt as bad as youre try to make it out to be sony have done worse with the psp ads (squirel ones) this is nothing calm down you are over analysing this to bring out an issue which i would guess doesnt really apply to you (meaning i guessing your not black) now me being black i see nothing wrong with this all they did was point out skin colours had they said white is better than black or something then you could start your petitions and your angry letters but not now
Can see what they were trying to do but they should have re-thought this as it does seem a bit wrong pitching humans in the ad.
this is racism!!
You do think Sony would have learned their lessons by now, but once again they prove us wrong. Either Sony are Nazis, or they are plainly idiotic. Comming to think of it Japan had a strong alliance with Hitler and his Nazi party, so they may just be going back to their roots.
sony owns
I'm a graphic designer.
and if you see the "artsy" point of view, it's really not that bad nor racist.
it's well thought and very sleek indeed.
wow, im usually pretty relaxed about racism and such, but this does seem to over step the bountries on sony's part. the chick is pretty hot tho at any rate
@24 owns what a rubber duck? or maybe a pair of shoes???
clever marketing or not: i wont buy products from any company that is doing advertisment with racial content.
dude look at the cloths they have on. Black guy seems to have on some kind of old slave uniform or something (u really cant see) and the white has on a more upper class type outfit. THe black man cant have any thing these days....first you took O.J. and now this?!?! lol im jp but yea. ITs pretty racist in my opinion....but mabye its because im black
there is nothing wrong with this ad..you being ignorant; you see a black man alongside a white woman (and yes it appears the woman is dominating the man..but its just a metaphor which is representing the psp's; and advertising how the white psp is coming and is the next thing from sony) so yea you see a black and a white on the same poster and automatically think of racism and criticise th ad and sony for being racist - you kind of people is whats wrong with this world..
this ad isnt racist in anyway...i think you need to go away and think about the actual meaning of this ad..
well we know what it is actually trying to portay but think about the subliminal message that is there
well we know what it is actually trying to portay but think about the subliminal message that is there
its only there because people want it to be - people are so conscious about the past and slavery and what not, that they see anything implicating blacks as racists...its not normal, this just needs to be forgoten and over looked, so people can really appretiate the ad for what it is
I think its absoultly fine. You lot are way to sensitive. If that was a black women grabbing a white person it wouldnt get the sort of reaction this has had.
Everyone chill out ffs and stop being all goody two shoes like.
Seriously guys, we were just kidding about the whole LocoRoco thing. This is REALLY racist though. I'm not even kidding.
oh wow subliminal messages must start race riot cant control myself, sony using mind control to make all white and black people kill each other so they can take over 31 and 32 you are an idiot and sony isnt gay you are
we're not all graphic designers are we? We don't all look at the ad from such an artsy point of view
whoa, i can tell the same kind of people who attacked loco roco not so long ago will be on this quick. Except this time i think they're more justified. A white woman looking hatefully at a black man while strangling him? Yeah, that's pretty well thought-out, especially when sony thinks of the kind of attention this will get
Over here now my friends, we are trying to hypnotize the african eurpeans into believing that there was NO racism at all.
"DO NOT SEE THE RACIST OVERTONES!"
That is just stupid. Whites should ALWAYS be apologetic for enslaving the masses and should watch thier a$$e$ before coming out with denials like the ad above. period. There are no ifs and buts. This whole history denial the neo-conservatives put forth in media and society is utter BS.
YOU cannot be sorry if you are NOT SORRY. Remember that the next time you try to deny the hurt it will cause by your bigoted propoganda of "reverse racism" and "i-am-not-a-racist-I-love-the-blackies".
If anything this ad does reflect history that we are trying so hard to forget.
AND WE MUST NOT FORGET!
P.s. I am white
I think what the ad is trying to say is that the "black" psp is old and ugly, while the "white" psp is younger and sexy and has a cute "button layouts". and that white psp totaly ownes black psp.
First sexism and now racism... what else are you goint to try pass as "artsy"?
that is so racist
wont you all stop being a bunch of babies everybody thinks they see racist every wher. ok lets put it this way say i get pulled over by a cop and his last name is churchill can i say hes being a racist to me becuse im irish quit being bunch of babies. and i should know i live in hell AZ. this state hase more div than any other state.
Blame *ALL* white people for what? Slavery? NOT EVERY WHITE PERSON ON EARTH WAS *FOR* SLAVERY.
Did you ever think about that? That white people were born *AFTER* slavery...you can't blame the sins of the father on the son!
Moron #38!
Also, I don't know about you, but I don't think my great great great great long gone relatives in italy had slaves.
Again...MORON #38.
you are a dumb ass my family came to america in 1901 we did not own slaves we also build the railroads becuse no one would give us a good job you can come to my state and see singh that say no irish alowed but do i blame the majorty english settelers no thats the past so stop being souch a ***** if you have a problem with that i live in AZ USA step to me. p.s. sorry wagste if this post gets me banned i understand no hard fellings.
WELL.. I DONT KNOW WHAT TO SAY IF ANYTHING LOOK AT THE SYMBOLISM OF THE AD AN FORGET THE FACT THAT ITS SONY SELLING A WHITE PSP THEN MAKE UP YOUR MIND AT THEEND OF THE DAY SYMBOLS ARE WHAT THE MIND DIGEST FIRST THEN WORDS THAT HO THE BRAIN TAKES INFO, HENCE WHY YOU RARLEY HEAR WORDS IN YOUR DREAMSAND YOU HAVE TO INTERPRET THE"IMAGES" AND NOT THE WORDS IN DREAMS........ I GOING TO SIT ON THE FENCE ON HIS ONE BUT DO ASK THAT YOU LOOK AT THIS FROM A SYMBOLIC VIEW POINT
I think we're all missing out on the important part: where was this ad shown? Was it shown in the US?
Has anyone actually seen this billboard? The text on it looks a bit... funny. Like it's been Photoshopped on.
of course he had to have an afro ^.^ obligatory black people always do.
whoa..why is it racist then? just coz a white woman appears dominant over a black man - that is pathetic. the ad ia represetning how the black psp is old news, and how the white psp is a new product which may dominate the black psp - the ad used humans to bring it to life and ad some creativity to attract the public.
yes slavery was appauling, and ok it shouldn't be completly forgoten to ensure it never happens again - but it should be in the back of our minds - we, nowadays shouldnt be worried about being racist and offending people by putting a black and a white person together in an ad; guess what, Sony wernt worried..they shouldnt be..the ad is very good at representing the PSP's, and the release of the white psp.
i think its mainly americans who are/will be shocked by this (they shouldnt be) if this was shown in Europe - very few would relate racism to this ad... i'm a white male living in the UK.
once again, there is nothing racist about this - you see it as racist because you want to - its all in your head
what is racism? can you eat it?
sony didnt create that message, YOU did.
they are just basing their ad around a controversial issue. it is clever.
any publicity is good publicity.
people talk.. "OMG SONY IS RACISTT1!!11!! THEIR NEW AD FOR WHITE PSPS IS SAYING WHITE IS BETTER THAN BLACK"
"yes, shame about that, but the white psp is coming? when?"
you are their advertising you morons.
Sony is just trying to get as close as possible to have their name circlated to make sales. Is it racist...I would say so....but that is what will get them free publicity. Marketing is expensive....so if they can get in the news for free.....bam! All over the front page.
She has cancer of the left thigh....or maybe it's a PSP, who can tell?
Serious comment: The whole racism thing is going too far, people are far too ready to jump on the 'this is racist' bandwagon, and Sony is playing to this in order to get publicity. Is it racist? Maybe. Is it trying to look racist? Definitely.
I wish sony would stop trying to make 'different' ads, and make some 'different' games. LocoRoco is a start, but come on, the DS has the PSP beaten for games, and the only reason I use my PSP is for homebrew/development.
@ The next person who meets a Sony CEO, pimp slap them for me ^_^
orna i is blue n yous r dissin me racism orna.
bring it on greenboy!
nocomment
"Once you go black you never go back"
stop being racist evry1. this will only lead to racist jokes etc. think of the pain you're causing!
eesh...
dumb@$$es!
yeez... Too many people are looking for controversial issues here. There is also an advert where the black woman is standing over the white one.
I don't really see the problem...
Ok it says the white psp is comming.
You have a blck dude about 2 get beaten up/ threatened by a white chick, suggesting the white PSP is better than the black. Ok that does sound fairly racits but cos its a white chick, it kind if diminishes the 'racist factor' a bit.
And yea Sony's obvuisly pursosly done this, so yep they get more pubplicity due to 'contreversy'. Think about it if it makes the news there effectivley advertsing on TV for free!!!
Oh yea to Dark_Lord
Oh yea to Dark_Lord
for all you people in the UK for a majorty of americans white and black alike thats all they focus on every day its very sad i just get so mad when every one throws out the race card like its secound nature it just i live in a state 90 miles from the mexican border i view people as pepole .
i can understand a white coloured person in a pose, but at the same time holding in his or her hand a black man, whoever says thats not racist is absolutely wrong and is definetly a racist themselves.
be funny if it was 2 guys and the white one had a whip
First of all, let me say that slavery and racism is bad. Secondly, I will never be apologetic for slavery because I never had slaves or treated another race differently. I am speaking for myself and not my ancestors. I think that focusing on the past can also be a problem. It's good to look back and reconized shameful things, but we should never feel personally sorry for then. We know that we might do something differently if we knew what we know now. That is true understanding and knowledge. If we are constantly apologetic and overly polite to a paticular race, then we are treating someone different because of their race. That will never bring us closer together.
We need to meet new people and focus on what we learn from them. Who cares what happened XX number of years ago, if we are friends now?
And about this ad. There seems to be racist undertones, however intentional. I would think it would have been better to have a white ninja standing over a beaten black ninja. Or possibly a white and a black person on equal footing, fighting eachother. I think we would find racist undertones in any white v. black ad, anyway.
Maybe they should have had an all black person and all white person working at a common goal, and a slogan like, "Now black and white can stand together." They could replace "stand" with "fight" or play" to suit the tone they are going for. That would also play into one of the PSP's best features, WiFi.
My damn commetns keep getting cut off.
I just want to say; Dark lord no.23, you are the biggest tool to grace the qj comments boxes.
Sonys ad department must be on drugs.
I think the black psp looks more slick anyway
Black or white.... all psp's are made with GREEN circuit boards on the inside.
I agree with Nerd. We need to stop being so careful about "racism" and just live life like we normally would. If slavery had never happened and racism had never happened, no one would think anything of this ad. If the ad had shown a black woman dominating a white man, again, no one would care. I simply do not understand why we must yell "RACISM!!!!" at everything we see. When it gets to the point where we call out a game like LocoRoco for racism, that's just stupid.
Like Nerd said, this ad is not racist, however, because you live in the US and you're all extremely overly sensitive to "racism", for some reason, you interpret it as so. Wasn't the entire point of racism being that black people were being treated DIFFERENTLY than white people? Well, to me, it sure looks like you're still treating them differently because of their skin color, because if the ad had been 2 white people, no one would have cared.
So let's all stop and think for a moment, that maybe we shouldn't scream "NAZIS!!!" when Sony makes an ad like this.
Yeah, its pretty obvious sony and their ad agency are aware of the potential to cause offence, hence the white GIRL. A white guy would have been too much for even sony to stomach though I reckon that ad agency wouldnt have thought twice about it. Sony seem to be really working hard to alienate what will be their key demographic in the upcoming couple of years (males 25-40, with PLENTY of disposable income), and even I (a closet sony fanboy), am rapidly losing sympathy for them and my faith in them.
PS.
I tip my hat to trooms comment about treating people as people regardless of race. nice 1 mate.
I'm gonna have to agree with one. You're all reading way to far into this. Nothing racist about it.
If everybody here just took the time to think before talking...
It is not Sony tyhat starting this "racist adcampagne". It's people like you who see a picture and start screaming right away.
If you go to www.yourpsp.com and go to the dutch site, you wil see sony has got 2 pictures with this compagne. the first one you see is the one that's being talked about here. If you wait a few seconds you will see a picture of the "black psp" standing threathingly over the "white psp".
So I ask you! What's racist about this campagne?!
Because of all you people talking about one picture makes that averybody forgets there are two.
That is racist
Serouisly...all other ads failed and now this?
i agree #74 - i don prefer the black psp. OH NO!!! IS THAT RACIST BECAUSE I PREFER THE BLACK PSP OVER THE WHITE ONE!!?!?!?!?!?...*****ing hell..could everyone shut up with the comments about this add being racist...you yourselves are being racist for picking the black man out a 'black' - you are creating the racist image in your own minds! its not sony's fault you lot are mentally sick and that racism is the first thing on your mind!
but yea anyways #74 sony still need to advertise this as much as they can and push it as much as the ydid the yblack one - they've probs got a few millions in boxes in a warehouse somewhere - they did to get rid of them somehow lol
thanks #76 - i appreciate the mention and am glad to see you agree with me, and im glad to see somebody else on here with some sense :)
I dont get how this is bad she is in white cloths hes in black cloths is there something im not seeing? the fact is it is just a black modle and a white modle are you people saying that it should just be 2 whites or 2 blacks then u my friends are the racist! I bet you wouldnt say anythign if it was the other way around!
I'm a black graphic artist, and really don't see the racist thing with it. You guys gotta stop saying 'racist' bout everything, that's what makes ppl racists...
--
i love all my macs!
Thanks #86!
Finely someone else who sees it!
The black people from africa were not all slaves in the first place. The majority of black people who were brought to North America were either taken from their homes, or rallied up from external villages, who were oblivous to the outside world. This is why so many black people are angry. Now, the "whites should ALWAYS be apologetic for enslaving the masses" comment (who made it) is REALLY pissing me off. I'm *****ing italian and greek, my family wasn't even here when black people were still a victim of the slave trade. So, even though I am highly sympathetic to black people who were slaves or had family who were slaves, I have no right to apologize. I'm not the reason they were slaves. Just because my skin is a certain colour I have to apologize for the acts of others with the same skin tone? No. That's like asking a random black person to apologize for O.J. Simpson. It's just not right, and doesn't even make sense.
you people keep talkin about that the white chick is holding a man, but i've seen the thing in real life and its a woman she's holding. And it looks racsist to me!
I like some controversy in my advertising but leaves a bad taste in my mouth...
yeah that a every nice post retro i have the same thing my family wasnt here during slavery or slave trade so as i do feel bad for them and how the slave owners treated them and such I dont feel the need to say sorry because my family didnt have anything to do with that + my family all lives in the nouth. all 13 of us lol...
ohh please get over it, it's just an add...
they have been showing up in the Dutch newspaper all the time when the white psp came out.
and don't pull that "can we really think this is a nice ad, or should I say it is racist, so as not to be frowned on"
it's just an ad of a white woman and a black YES BLACK guy, portraying the white and black PSP.....and THATS ALL !!!!!!
sjees get over the racist CRAP already
you would kno its not Sony themselves thats creating these ads, so dont bash Sony, its their marketting\PR division that has no common sense whatsoever, i think Sony needs to clean up that division as they are taking things way out of hand (ex. "take a running jump here".... at a subway station!, and now this)
i can see how it may cause some offence but to be honest you have to admit...its quite a good advert and im sure it will become successful on PSP sales.
I hope Microsoft wins this new generation!!!!! !!
I think this is alittle racist, I don't like the ad.
Lets see how many cmplain about this being racist!
BITE THE KERB
atleast it got people talking...imagine what it will do out of the current psp community!
Sometimes, I just don't seem to understand the problem of the poster.
everybody KNOW that it's not racist and that sony doesn't promote racism with this add, they're not that dumb. However, it IS plain bad taste.
For all the people that are like "but it's just an ad, you morons!!", just try to imagine an ad with a huge picture of gaz chambers with lots of jews dying in it, and the catch-phrase "VERMIN NEED TO BE DEAL WITH", and some spray beside it. The message would only be that the spray kill vermin, and I guess it could be considered some kind of "joke" about world war two but it just would be horribly horribly wrong.
I understand that it's not at all the same thing, but the principle is the same : the picture is just not right, it deliberatly implies that the white chick is superior to the black : even if it's a joke, it's just incredibly poor taste, just to attract some attention.
Throughout history, every major civillization has enslaved another. EVERY.
It's human nature. Infact, the Africans originally enslaved MY people! Those ****ing RACISTS!!! The Africans should forever be apologetic for what they did to the jews! But nobody has ever apologized to me, and instead, people tell ME to apologize for slavery? Stupid. I've never held slaves, and i've never been enslaved. It matters not.
I hope you see my point.
Bollocks! Only one of these pathetic 'Do-gooders' would say this Ad is racist. I think it's a pretty cool ad personally. Peace!
I didn't even think of this ad being racist until i read about it on here...
Seriously what the hell?
Anyway i like the ad, it looks pretty cool.
So, i think that this add could be racist seen as she is looking at a black guy angry and the ad says "PSP white is comming". But then again, it could be a human visual representation of WHITE PSP's over BLACK PSP's.
Im not really bothered anyways, i got a psp, they need to stop advertising it now. PSP WHITE has been out for ages.
...maybe you didnt see all the pics...scroll up the page - there is a pic of a black women dominating the white women (which is representing the black psp being greater than the white - the series of pics is only really representing the upcoming battle between the black and the white psp's; notice how the pics are showing the women fighting each other!!)
there is nothing racist whats so ever in these images - anyone who sees it as racist, is being racist, because you are picking out the BLACK people...i dont see anyone complaining that thw white woman is being dominated..oh thats write, nobody cares because she's white - you are being racist for picking out the black persons, and identifying her as different..why do that? its not normal - just look at the ad for what it is
This ad can produce many different meaning.. Final judgement is yours... If you think they represent a black n white psp, they are all just the same, just another new psp.. simple!!! If your first instinct of the ad is racist, den you don't have a pure heart.. being a white or black will still bother you.
I smell a ytmnd titled "sony doesn't care about black people"
That isn't the issue, the issue is whether or not it's morally objectionable to use this symbolism. In art, moral objection means little, but such art generally has a higher purpose than to shift units of an eletronic plaything.
is the person who post stuff on here about anything thats not dev. related instantly lauds it, and these gaggle of *****tards go in and join the jerk that posted the article. The 50 Cent thing, the Jamie Kennedy thing, and this. Compaines are trying to help your failing system, but once it hits the god forbid "mainstream" they throw thier homebrewed ***** at the wall and act like its the worse thing to happen to the PSP since updating.
It's freakin advertising for cryin out loud...the point is to...advertise...and there's no better publicity than word of mouth...and sony got that with this ad. just look at the amount of comments :). It's a great ad...the photography is beatifull. There's no racism issue here. If anyone thinks that then they should be pissed at the console being black or white, not the ad. What about people with brownish skin color or yellowish skin color. there's no yellow or brown psp. aren't you pissed of at that?? Get real people! Do you also get pissed with your grocers because he separates the green apples from the red ones? shoudn't the apples be pissed to? It's a ridiculous comparisson I know. But it just goes to show how ridiculous you guys with the racism issue look like to some of us.
whats the problem at all..
it's just good, who cares? if they want attention they'll get it.. any way.. and this seems a good way.
this is NO way rascistic!
50 cent's game IS rascistic. this is pure nature and it points out to be meant to be the psp's so dont friggin bother about some useless add!
person that posted this is useless to me.
9/11 was an inside job!!!Do your research for the 4th of july!!!
lol, why does the crazy ***** have such stupid hair? and the black person has a white undershirt.... they missed that. This is just stupid everybodys wineing about jack all. w.e and i totally agree with Escudo ^^^^^
Now that it looks risque and racist, more people are going to look at the ad and for better or for worst, it's going to give Sony public attention. If you think about it, the black model knew what she was getting into and had no problem taking the photo shoot.
I think Sony is losing it with the PS3 and there stupid ads
This is utterly unacceptable!
It's like the flicker of flame to ignite the volatile hatred between the whites and the blacks. It's an act to stir up again the now dormant war!
These ads needs to be pulled NOW!
white psp will never beat the black one niot with the firmware its coming out with black psp is the original !!!
with kernel mode yeahhhhh....all this contreversy for the same system with the same capabalities...ohhh boy the impact of color in this world is amazing....anyways to all my brothers YELLOW RULES HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! !!!! ASIANS KICKS ASS they should come out with a yellow psp kicking both their ass LOLLLLL matter im a spray paint mine rigth now !!! HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! !!

this ad is racist in my opinion. it shows a white girl wit good hair and decent clothes looking down at a black girl wit nappy hair and ragged clothes. wat black girl has hair like that. tisk tisk tisk. im offended.
that everyone is in on a joke, because if your guys are serious, thats very sad.
this ad is racist in my opinion. it shows a white girl wit good hair and decent clothes looking down at a black girl wit nappy hair and ragged clothes. wat black girl has hair like that. tisk tisk tisk. im offended.
That lady has an inverted cross on. That means satanism.
Dangit, Sony. This is too far.

Anyone who finds this racist is reading too much into it. It's freaking funny. If there was a white PSP first, and a black PSP that came later, it would only result in an ad that people would consider reverse discrimination. Hell, to me, it would be just as funny. The people that are sensitive to this ***** are the ones keeping the racist issue at an all time high. When people can LAUGH about the differences in the color of our skin, that to me is an ACCOMPLISHMENT. But there are the ignorant ones that will keep their close-minded approach to how issues should be dealt with. What else can I say?
If sony just said white psp is coming people would call racism. If Sony shows a black guy people call it racism. WHAT IS NOT RACISM?
artsy or racial or not this add is just TRYING too hard to be cool, nobody likes a "hey over here look at me im cool" marketing campaign and sony is just geting way tacky these days.
you guys do realize that is a black woman not a man in the advertisment, unless men wear skirts these days lol
Who would have thought that even PSP owners are becoming a bunch of whiney, politically correct dolts!
SONY........if it wasnt for homebrew.................i would be ashamed to own a psp -_-
SHAPE UP OR SHIP OUT!!!!!!!!!
the person in black is guy..right...........-_-....good grief. THIS AD WOULD NOT MAKE FCC REGULATIONS,eit her way!
SONY,....................SHIP OUT -_-
the person in black is a woman
this makes me sick i cant belive that they would be so stupid to make this ad
5. » However
The white psps actually get dirtier than the black ones because dirt and smudges show up better on the black one. But I still have to admit, the white one looks pretty good.
by core tactic (Unregistered), at Jul 04, 2006 at 07:44AM
ay?doesn't make sense?so all psp's get dirty?
look im no sony fanboy but this aint racist, the only reason it looks like that is because sony is horrible with their ad campaign, remember their subway ads, sony desperately needs to fire their current pr and ad team and hire a new one badly because right now sony sucks horribly at advertising their products
You're making up the "racism" in your own minds, people. Think of it this way: Those are PSPs, NOT people. Did you even LOOK at the other pictures? The black PSP's winning as well.
And after reading this article, I KNEW it was Christopher C. So I scroll up to look at the author and...Whaddya know? It's that whiney idiot, Christopher C.!
Fire EVERYONE who had a say in that ad campaign.
Sony is probally the best for Adds, look around everyones talking about it...
I have a silver PSP....
I do not believe sony itself is racist. In this day and age it has nothing to gain financially by being racist (at the end of the day its about the bottom line).
Sony wants EVERYONE to buy their PSPs. Not just white people.
I think it is naive to think that they didn`t foresee the possible interpretations of this ad.
Of course they saw the possible racist meaning....but that to them is a bonus because it means controversy and therefore extra publicity. And if ever asked about it they can play ignorant and strongly speak out against racism citing that they have people from all nationalities working for them etc etc...
I personally think its cheap and lacking in imagination.
Lol ppl, you need to chill the f*ck out a little. Why such a brawl for a cool AD like this? This is just genious and stylish, nothing about 'racism'. Lol are you really that old fashioned to see racism here
Love n peace.
Those crying racism usually are racist themselves.
People, racism is a form of power. When you are a white banker denying a loan to a black customer, THAT is racism. To think of your race as better than others is bigotry and prejudice, NOT racism.
You only make the ad into a racist thing. It's definitely art. "Art", granted, differs in people's minds. But this is not an attempt to pit blacks versus whites. The allegories the women represent are PSPs.
You little kiddies are dumb as dirt.
Why would Sony be pitting their Black PSP against their White one? I mean, what the hell? Why are they fighting for supremacy?
My suggestion...Hitler for president.
I don't know what you guys are all talking about. I just don't see any difference in skin color. I don't see a black person and a white person, I see two fine people.
Seriously though, this is ridiculous. It's not racist. What pisses me off is that if the white PSP had come out first, and the add was inverted, nobody would've said a damn thing. Stop pitying black people at every turn! THAT is racist. Downright insulting.
There has been recently a big rise of racism among dutch people.
you guys are stupid. seriously
Fu cking *****s, first they try to get equality with us, and now they are trying to rape our beautiful white women.
LETS KILL ALL THE *****S!!!
Ok. That is racist. This ad, is far from racist. Anyone past the age of 12 can see that, in any nation, of any race, as long as you are remotely intelligent.
Synopsis: There are two chicks fighting in this ad. One is black and the other is white. The white chick seems to have the upper hand. Each girl represents a different color PSP. This is not racism.
Our generation has been brought up to ignore race as much as possible in order to make the issue go away, which (surprise) doesn't work. What is hard to realize is that this is a very good beginning to an age where race can actually be used in a context other than racism. It's a time to celebrate, not whine!
We're on the brink of something really great here. Props to the artist!
Like the guy in the first post.. Some of you are stupid white kids, saying "this has nothing to do with racism"...
Its obvious that sony wants the controversy with this racism ad. So dont be stupid saying its not racism.
That is hilarious.
racism is well and alive by the Dutch
this just proves it
This ad definitely stirs up controversy. It's hard enough trying to ignore the racism that STILL exists in the USA. No matter what anyone says about how far our country has diminished racism, it's still around, covertly. I'm not trying to make an excuse and say that circumstances that I'm part of is due to racism but I'm not going to ignore that some people are still ignorant...black AND white.
Even though this ad is being expressed in an artistic viewpoint, the artist who thought of this knew what the hell he/she was going to start! Why couldn't the black woman be dressed in white and vice versa? Why have a white woman as pale as the moon and a black woman as dark as my PSP? Why use people at all? If the ad is for the PSP, why the hell a white PSP wasn't used?!
Put this ad in the U.S. and sh** is gonna fly, for real. Now I know the artist of this ad may say: "I didn't intend any racial connotations with this ad..." (or something to this quote) but no matter what he/she says, it is too controversial. I'm not saying that this ad is depicting racism but it certainly causes speculation. This is coming from an educated black man who has earned his Masters degree who is also a teacher/mentor. Intelligence has nothing to do with racism because racism is STUPID to begin with.
P.S. Whether it's black or white, I love my PSP, dammit! FW1.5 rules!
This is soo silly. Ok, here's how silly this entire argument is.
I have a black ipod.. if apple were to have advertised it using an african american would it have been racist? No, and neither would it have been if there was a black girl in the face of a white girl.. I think it's edgy, not racist. It's people who live in the boonies that take this sort of thing seriously.. go live in a real city for a few years, and then tell me it's offensive.
Get a life, we're talking about an electronic device here... And the white one is in the minority, so stop your minority hating -- racists!
This really is racist(people from anywhere but America can't really backtalk this "racist" thing bcause over there, yes, i've been over there, there aren't as many races and/or cultures, so it's very easy to pass this) girl gets 2 shot guy gets one, could even be called sexist, but i no it isn't. Speaking of which, it isn't sexist to have a half-nude grl on an ad, ots of guys w/ their shirts and shoes off r on ads, and im not gay, yet i wouldn't say it's sexist.
dudes learn to laugh at the colors of anyones skin and for them to learn to laugh at you, be positive man, im mexican and i think just about anyone is cool and i also make fun of anyone and im fine if someone makes fun of me because im not oversensitive, people should learn to laugh at one another, besides this is an ad for a gaming hanheld, if its racist it is not sony's fault its just their horrible ads and taste in what they think is hip, anyone remember their subway ads those were funny but wrong, anyways what i say to all races who take this seriously whatever color of skin you are i dont give a damn because i treat everyone the same the way they deserve to be treated
wait,...I think the supposed man is actually a black woman with an afro
I actually like it .... no I'm not white , far from it . It's very artistic and new . Besides only Sony would have the BALLS to publish that ad , anyways everyone keeps overlooking the real question , Is it coming to the US ?
A lot of you people are American. Because of this, I'm not surprised why some people think this isn't racist. But this is amazingly racist. I can't believe Sony would do something like this.
Let's get the facts straight:
This ad campaign had VERY racist intentions.
13% of the United States is black.
A negligible amount of Holland is black.
Europeans, in general, tend to be more racist than Americans (this is not generalization, this is a trend). A major reason for this is that there are not many black people integrated into their communities. Many Europeans have only seen black people on rare occasions. Meanwhile, people like me in New York see almost as many black people as white people.
At the beginning of the World Cup, there was a major problem at which fans were screaming "monkey" at a black soccer player. In another instance, a coach of a World Cup team motivated his players during practice by emphasizing that the opponent had a black player and he degraded that player.
Europe is very hostile towards black people and surely will understand the racist implications of this. Sony is being horribly controversial with this ad campaign.
I don't think this Ad is racist at all...
Sony has gone to the trouble to minimise controversy.
1. A female is in a position of power. (ie. not a white guy beating up a black guy)
2. The clothes match their respective colours.(ie. A white person is not beating up a black person in plain clothes.) Thus it's the colour that becomes the focus, not the colour of the SKIN.
3. It doesn't even look that violent, or make a strong statement that white is better than black...
My opinion anyway...
stfu everyone how can u freak you a *****in ad who cares if people are black and white we are still the same suck it up princess
man wtf are you atlking about, a white girl having a battle with a balck girl is now calssed racism? why? because white is new? so what, it's supposed to mean we do not like the black edition?
ps: maybe I don't see the racism here because I'm from québec, canada, we're not racism here, in montreal where I live we have about 30% of people from québec, and 70% are from other places! so caucasian white ( if you write it like that ) is a minority, nobody can really tell where you come from because of one law that obligate students to use the same school, so where you're from nobody wanna know, we don't care. But I heard on the election of the president of US george bush they didn't even count the votes made by black people, US is racist ( at least the south, maybe not the north, I mean democratic is not racism and bush follower are ( and bush was nammed president by a majority so... )
you have any comment on this ? maybe I'm not right, tell me. ( but for the votes ignored this is right, it was in the news, and inside the moore's farenheit 911 )
holy ***** i think he's right...
Is that a chick?!
*shrugs*
I think it's hot
I must ask.. how many of you are honestly brothers....
the ad 30-40 years ago would have caused all sorts of problems... the damn thing reeks of jungle fever.... They are selling the damn machine with sex... and all the dumb as crackers are screaming "oh the poor black man"....
hell, it looks like he's getting what he wants... I would.
I hate the over sensitizing of everything... whispering from one to another... did he say *****... or they said ***** right... shames on them....
I'm a black man, and proud, not proud as a some might think... but damn.. this crap is so 60's and 70's... very little racism towards backs exist here in Missouri... now for the Texicans and Mexicans (OMG... they're Hispanic, must be PC)
Kiss it buddy... I'm sick of this crap
I think people are only angry because the black person is an ugly toad. If they'd used some sexy black chick...we wouldn't be having any of this discussion. People would be too busy jacking off to it.

Ok. Its 2 women fighting. Can't you guys look past the color of their skins?
Granted, Sony got what he wanted. So they are not stupid.
The people that got offended by this are stupid.
I'm sittin here thinking the exact same thing. I don't beleive this ad was trying to be racist, but it wouldn't have sparked controversy if they didn't have the black and white woman pitted against each other. What's the point of them fighting? For one thing, both versions are made by the same company, if anything they should be holding hands....or making out.
Put a KKK figure holding the white PSP is probably than this stupid ***** ad...
What is the matter with you, making a stupid, pathetic article like this?
I should slap the piss out of you just for being a moron.
First off.... As an editor for this crappy website with all of it's increasingly moronic articles and "point of view" crap like this blatant act of website stupidity, you apparently think way too much of your stupid opinion, and you laughably belive that everyone else is instatnly going to care and see the same "tasteless" nonsense that you seem to see.
Well, you're not only an idiot, but you think way too much of yourself and your stupid opinion. You sir.... a a baised, selfish, and self-important fool.
Jeez. And people wonder why sites like digg pan on this crappy ass website the way they do. Well, this idiotic article of pure ignorance is a great example in and of itself.
This isn't a news site. It's a whining, complaining site for self important loser 14 year olds to bang up some dumb opinion peice made out of an ignorant and reactionary self-deluded observation like this.
I mean.. who gives a crap besides you? Or is it that you decided "OMG WHITE WOMAN AND OMG BLACK PERSON. I MUST WHINE ON THE INTERNET SINCE I WRITE FOR QJ.NET!!"
That's about as pathetic as making a big deal out of this article is.
As for taking issue with the "tastelessness" of this ad itself, I can irrafutably reduce your stupid opinion pretty quickly (More than i've already done, I mean.)
Firstly, if this ad has it's origins in America or Europe what gives you the right to suddenly be the one to declare what is or is not good taste for something that just depects something pretty innocuous, in the first place. It's only as "edgy" and "tasteless" as you think it is, and the main point being that since it actually does not depect any racial message besides the one that your MIND projects into it. (Probably becuase you have some serious race issues yourself)
However, if the ad's origins are in Japan, boy are YOU in for a rude awakening.
You see... In Japan... you might not realize this, but there are no black people in Japan. There are no white people, either. There are the Japanese. And something else you may not realize, is that culturally, in Japan, since there are no classifications for mixed races in Japanese society, there are no "racist" overtones in there.
Besides people of color being commonly depcted in Japan as an identifier of "A foreigner", there is no racist attitude inherent in a society where there are no mixed culturism of other races to offend in Japan.
So, if the ad is from Japan, any looks that YOU take from it are pretty damn irrelevant, and even if it's from Europe or America, you're not the damn decency police, anyway.
So.. it occours to me that rather than getting whiny and reactionary about something that offends YOU, dosn't mean that the rest of these sheep who read this site, (usually with the reading and writing comprehension of a small child) are going to see it your same way.
So in short... You fools on this dumb site should strive to continue to report on news (Besides the news reports that this website just plagerizes, word for word that is), rather than give you halfassed opinion peices on things that you can't even beghin to know what you're blabbering on about or why you are.
It's stupid articles like this that make this site suck, and it's idiot editors like you that compounbd this.
If you want to whine about stupid crap, stick to doing it on a personal blog like everyone else has to. Just becuase you whine on QJ.net, dosn't make your blubbering any less whiny and opinionated.
So take your stupid article and shove it.
Ohhhh!!!
For awhile, I thought it was about the part like looks like she's wearing a giant inverted cross!
As for racist, this is about as racist as loco roco.
Everybody's seeing racism in everything these days, which ironically are far less racist than, say, a few decades ago.
Farenheit 911 is just propaganda and unfortunately, 90% of people who watch it don't notice how Michael Moore stretches things and makes unreasonable conclusions that only appear correct. He strings fact after fact, but you must notice that these things become irrelevant. It is absolutely untrue that the United States intentionally did not count votes from black people. First of all, how the **** would someone be able to do such a thing. Votes are ANONYMOUS. That claim is complete BS.
Also, just because 30% of people in Quebec are from there, it doesn't mean that only 30% are caucasians. In fact, Quebec is one of the least diverse places in North America. An overwhelming majority of Quebec is French-Canadian. About 2% of Canada is black, and only 1% of Quebec is black according to the 1996 census. Only 6.2% of people from Quebec were visible minorities ("persons, other than Aboriginal peoples, who are non-Caucasian in race or non-white in color").
Just the fact that you mention that there is no segregation shows that Quebec, a province with very French origins, is not very diverse.
That statement about the US not counting votes from black people is REDICULOUS.
...the advertisement is very weak! The is a very lame ad, I don't see this ad as racist but very tasteless. As an entertainment giant you would think they would blow us away w/ their advertisements along w/ their products. If they want their products to sell (ads are not doing it) they need to make them very practicle. Like the UMD's. The are not at all universal if you can only use them in the PSP. And movies for 20 to 35 dollars a pop, who would want to pay that much? And w/ the Bluray discs, it would be great to have added content like MP-4 versions of the movie to play on your PSP on the disc. That way prople would not have to rip DVD's to convert them to MP-4. Those disc's are going for aprox $30 bucks a movie...common Sony!!!
Whoever really thinks this is racist is immature, seriously. If it was two black people or two white people you guys wouldn't say anything. Stop looking at race jesus are we ever going to get over it? Every single day something new is "racist" when its not i mean it seems you can't put two people of a differnt color in the same picture without it becoming racist.
why do people defend what others find offensive ?
why do people defend what others find offensive ?
Sony should release a brown psp, with a hidden knife compartment. Orale Guey!
Why?
Is it so that only white can fight another white? and black another black? why not white vs black. Its as natural as white vs white etc.
And I think its OK for an AD. Next thing they will release yellow psp? and put japanese there to kick the hell out of everyone else? :D. Yeaaaahhhhh RIiiiight.
It's funny, so many people in this thread are retarded it's not even funny, for the last time it's 2 WOMEN fighting. I mean seriously do you see alot of black men wearing strappy heels on a daily basis?
So my question is, if you can't even take the time to realize what is actually in the ad how you make the argument of what it's actually trying to say...racist or not?
will these white psp's come with 2.7+? i hope not, i want a white one to mod and have homebrew... but theres always UP i guess
"That is just stupid. Whites should ALWAYS be apologetic for enslaving the masses and should watch thier a$$e$ before coming out with denials like the ad above. period. There are no ifs and buts. This whole history denial the neo-conservatives put forth in media and society is utter BS."
You are truly one ignorant bastard. You obviously know nothing about the history of slavery or anything else for that matter. What "masses" have Whites enslaved? As far a black slavery, blacks enslaved their own and sold them to Jews who in turn sold them to Whites.
Of all involved, Whites had the LEAST to do with black slavery. Someone should kill your mother for give birth to an ignorant, self-hating anti-white.
...it's the writer of the article that's horrific. I mean, that's quite obvious.
No, I'm not kidding.
ok
what?
if its a white chick fighting a white chick
or white dude fighting a white dude
its not racist
if its a black chick fighting a black chick
or black dude fighting a black dude
its not racist
if its a white chick fighting a black chick
or black dude fighting a white dude
it is racist
people always see things as racist if its interacial!
but i say the person is thinking its racist is the racist one, for its not a problem if one own's race stays with it's own race and leaves the other out.
now thats the racist thinking that currupts our sociaty today
i mean... in other words
you pic two people to do something, and they have to be the same race. otherwise everyone will think it is racist!
but then there is a problem there!
the other race, the undepicted one, will view it as thier race being left out. that doesnt make any since!!
theres no way to win
and as far as the ad. thats just stupid
and i have 3 psp's right now, and i dont plan on buying a new one at all, but i still want the white psp's to be at 1.0, or 1.5, even though they probably are not going to be
most likely more like 2.6 or 2.5, because they had to start making the white ones a while back, and when they started it was probably the firmware 2.5/2.6 era
wow i just noticed this
and no one else hasnt noticed it yet :)
the white chick on the first pict has a glove on her hand that she is touching the black chick with
this another racist symbol?
no!
its a fanshon statement!
RIGHT NOW! EVERY ONE GET UP AND DANCE TO THE AWESOME GROVE!
DOO DOO DOO DOOOOOOOOOO!
word up
When thing's colors are associated with ppl's... IT SURE RACISM
What does a psp has to do with white vs. black ppl?
Why didnt they put 2 psp's ?
RACISM
is there any where i could get a better pic of this sev i cant realy tell anything in the pic it a bit dark but any way if that was the one in black looks like its gona get what he or she want (white psp gona give it up lol )

I went to the site and like i dont it being racist or what ever but with little amagination it could get a little kinky
any way it a cool ad once u see it in a good shot of it
Omg dat ad iz lyk so racist
If you find that ad racist or in any way "controversial", then you really need to take a long look at your life.
http://www.yourpsp.com/psp/psp.html#section=homepage&locale=nl_nl
Thats a black woman.
And its obvious that the message that they trying to portray is that white psp is better than the black psp by showing a metaphorically displaying a white person being dominant over a black person or white supremacy. The reason why this missage seems so strongly offensive to black people is because of their unforgetable, undinable broken history. This horrible history is what rendered so many african americans today so easily sensitive to any racial offensice. To even make a slight tease of anything slightly racially offensive to african americans is like making fun of a person becuase they were abused and raped by their parents when they were small. Of course anyone who hasent experianced being raped by their parents when they are small wouldnt understand the same way someone who has an ancestry of people who were enslaved, abused, murdered, tortured, and discrimated against just becuase of their skin color. Try to understand and sympathise what its like.
Im sure if this ad was of a woman being beaten down and choked by a man, or a jewish man being dominated by a Nazi, it would would stir up the same controversy.
WHY? WHY? WHY?
Racism? What is racism? I tell you - racism is all in the mind! It does not exist so there. Pointless thread.
Ronaldinho's Teeth save the day again - HURRAH!
All I want for Christmas is...
a sausage roll!!! MMMMMMMMMMMMMMM MMMMMMM...
Oh yeah and Mr Blobby is a big fat fish!
.. whining about?
It's an awesome add, I really dislike people like you trying to act politically correct in every aspect..
bah, grow up.
I think its racist that people didn't know if the black being was a female or a male - what are you trying to say?
Actually i dont.. because "Black" isn't a race, african american is a race, european is a race but black or white isn't.
So to the people who think this is racist could you say what coloured race is being attacked here? and by what pale race?
this ad defines true dirtyness and ugliness.
re4ryu
I think that its a woman in the add...cuz look at tha second large picture...i dont think ive seen a guy with those type of legs...
and this is all BS...i mean cmon look at the real message
the Black PSP is old news...the white one is prettier, and sexier--thats all theyre trying to say
and publicity for sony will cause a whole flock of people to go online and research the topic...that will definately up sales for them--especially since theres a public taht may not kno about the PSP comin now in different colors...then theyll check oout homebrew...its a marketing cycle--sonys amazing at that =)
Now the black psp and the white psp are the same system rigth ????!!!!
ok.....
Now what in the world sony's trying to say with that ad that the white psp is better than the black one ???
why didnt they just put the two fine ass girls black and white posing acting cool being fresh you know...saying the "white psp is coming"
But NOOOOOO dumba$$ sony puts a black girl with a f**%ed up afro being owned by some white girl ...whats the messages??? people with black psp 's must figth the one with the white one ???shiiit!!! that 's a stupid commercial and i dont think that ad his gonna be posted in the streets of north america or there's gonna be some riots down there and sony building will burndown....
To all white psp owners!! if i see u in the street with one ill beat u down like there's no tomorow and that's wether you black ,white ,yellow ,brown, blue ,red,green...
the war is on white psp is going down...KERNEL MODE RULES....!!!!
The add sucks ass....
ANYWAY
I still think the black PSP looks better. On the white one, the buttons and back look really cheap. Also the gaps between the button and hole is pretty distracting, maybe it was just the system I was using...
Back to downgrading my PSP.
as being a person of higher pigmentation levels, i say that people who read this ad like out of the blue would say that it is racist, well it is kinda, since it is balck over white, but if you study it carefully it actually bringing the psps to life like how the humans WERE, as the white did rule over black, but in the end i stilll thought the black psp was cooler, as are rappers and bstball players
I have read through every single comment, looked at all the pictures, and done my research. Any normal person with a high school education can make the statement that this is not a racial thing at all. Only the uneducated can look at the ad and see such "racism."
People often look beyond the art, in its most simplistic form. Anyone can nitpick and "analyze" a piece of work and come up with wild conclusions and inferences.
A good example, as someone mentioned, is Fahrenheit 9/11. I was defiantly pulled into the whole conspiracy theory, because he did such a good job of explaining it all. He definitely "nitpicked" the situation, and made his argument. Although I could be classified as a Democrat, and on many levels agree with Moore, I can see that there is obvious stretching of information and facts. The truth of the matter is, the whole situation was blown out of proportion.
That is true with this whole series of ads from Sony.
To the untrained eye, at its most basic level, the ads are catchy and entertaining. But, as with most things, there will be an underlying argument for, or against a particular aspect. The others in the series "played" with "sexism, and racism." I personally don't see it as credible for all the reasons I stated above. It just doesn't add up.
As a digital artist, and website creator, I understand the need to create something that will captivate the general public. The most basic, and time-tested way of doing so is to offend someone. It’s just that simple. Even if one person is pissed at the fact that a white girl is "over" a black girl, a war will spawn that will capture the attention of thousands, even millions, and create opinions and feelings that were never there before. It’s all of a sudden a personal battle. You YOURSELF were insulted. Sony won. They got the attention of over 200 commenter’s and readers of QJ.
Like the "sexist" ads, women in general (especially those feminists) were "shocked and appalled," and because of that some guy/girl, possible offended (or excited) himself started paying more attention to Sony as a whole. (Sony won again.) Then, while other people just look at the ads during their daily commute, and brush it off, this guy actually stopped, and noticed this one. He thought that these ads were really offensive. He thought that there is a pattern. All it took was one person to make the comment that "this is wrong!" Now there are flame wars dedicated to Sony. All the while, Sony’s artists just won the battle. In the business, if you touch the hearts (or wallets) of one person, it was all worthwhile. Now, if that person is touched in a bad way, then the media buzz created because of that is thirty times greater.
Another poster said that "Racism is a power." (or something to that effect)
I clapped my hands at this statement. I have never been able to quickly and easily say a few words that could sum up a whole attitude towards racism, sexism, and other -isms.
Thousands of people were affected by slavery. I get it. I feel sorry for them. But, I do NOT feel an OUNCE of sympathy for anyone in this generation pulling the race card. Not one single person is directly feeling the affects of a "hate" provided by any race. It is completely WRONG for the government to give apologies, money, grants, and preferences towards the affected (these are not just black people). I am tired of there being scholarships just for being Hispanic. I am tired of there being groups dedicated towards Feminists. I am tired of there being privileges just for being Native-American. I am tired of there being cash rewards for there being a slave in your blood line. It is just power being exercised. It is simply called a “double standard.â€
You are telling me that I can get away with having a group of my MAN friends, dedicated towards the "fair treatment of men nationwide?" NO! I will be a sexist. But women can do it.
You are telling me that I can get away with having a group of my WHITE friends dedicated towards the "working white man?" NO! But black
people can do it. Jesse Jackson can do it. Native-Americans can do it. Hispanics can do it.
But of course all black people are lazy, chicken eating bastards. All Native-Americans have casinos. All Middle-Easterners are terrorists. All Mexicans jumped over the border. All women are feminists. All white people are from the KKK. All Germans are Nazis. All people from Holland smoke pot. All Asians are smart. Do I really have to continue?
The bottom line of it all is simply put: racism is a power. Anyone can use it at any time. It just doesn't matter that this "life changing event" happened 200 years ago. People are "still being affected."
Stop trying to make SOMETHING out of NOTHING. It is pure blasphemy. Leave Sony alone to do their jobs. We all know that Sony needs this ad campaign to work, otherwise the PSP is dead.
I really hope that this post is the post-to-end-all posts. I show no racism. I have no prejudice. This post is coming from the heart.
I also hope you all know that Sony is having all of us eating right out of their hands. Normally, it takes a couple of years, and a lot of sales for an ad campaign to be “successful.†Sony just did it in a couple of weeks. Now THAT’S balls.
this ad is wack! might as well put a asain, indian,me xican, and every women from around the world on this ad and release a rainbow psp
A couple peeps I know there say its a part of the culture, but I was just using it as an example. :)
No, it's not "racist"
Yes, it will be seen as racist.
Just by the fact that people are arguing over the nature of the ad here proves my point. The ad wasn't made with racism in mind, the ad was made to put the image of racism in people's minds but still be ubiquitous enough that Sony can duck out of any possible hate-crime damages (because there aren't any.)
The whole purpose of the ad isn't some kind of artistic statement, it's to stir up trouble, just like the previous PSP ads.
And we aren't even talking about the PSP white being a quick cash-in to the DS Lite's and iPod's designs (because God forbid Sony EVER ripped off ideas from Apple or Nintendo. No, they're completely original over there.)
Why? Because of the way you look at people.
You shouldn't think of a person as black or white at first, you should think of her as human.
There are two humans, one black, one white, fighting each other to show the contrast of systems, which is way more artistic than just showing 2 systems.
Also aggresion is artistic itself, it pushes human to act.
So author = closet racist
This ad = artistic
I know its not racism.. but what i do know is that this add doesnt clarify that its about Sony psp... it shouldn't have only text on it to make it clear that its from sony...
All i wanna say is that the designer was a bit clumsy to make a confusing looking add... it just look cheap! like i could pick 2 people from the street and take a picture and say that teh psp white is coming and add text...
as a designer myself i think sony could get more out themselfs to make something !Allot Better!
they obviously made this ad to stir up controversy so it sells more.
"However, if the ad's origins are in Japan, boy are YOU in for a rude awakening.
You see... In Japan... you might not realize this, but there are no black people in Japan.
"
Obviously you have no *****ing clue how Japanese think... yeah there are no black and white ppl in Japan (NOT! there are now!!! Go visit some bars in Japan). There is no concept of skin color in Japan.. yeah right because there is only *****ing Japanese color in japan. Japanese being one of the most racist culture in the freaking world dude. To them there is only the superior Japanese and the 'other lesser race'. Some might say: yeah right.. that's the old generation. The new generation of japanese kids are fun loving pot smoking tree-hugging folks. Sure, wait and see.
I don't see what the big deal is. White has always and will always be better than black, it's a known fact.

I agree with you that Sony has been very successful at gaining publicity by offending people. But that doesn't meant that it is not a racist advertisement. It is a VERY racist advertisement, but Sony will get the best of it. The only "fair" thing to do, in my opinion, would be to have the Dutch government fine Sony. The only problem is that the Netherlands don't exactly have the strictest legal system. I also agree with you about how Michael Moore strings together true, surprising facts and makes a conclusion that is all too weak and too circumstantial. Although all his facts are correct, his conclusions are not.
Just because the goal of SONY was to get publicity, they did it in all the wrong ways. This ad is EXTREMELY racist.
ok you idiot ....whatever.... if you dont see the racism in that pic with the ADD cause the pic itself doesnt really mean nothing its what come with it ..now if you cant see that than your just being ignorant and if your ignorant Than your not as EDUCATED as you think your are you f%$*king prick ....educated my a$$....
http://serv3.imagehigh.com/imgs/04/1268_realpsp.jpg
I dont see whats racist about it at all. i see a white psp kicking a black psp's @$$. thats what the photo does for me. anyone who sees other wise has issues with other races. Grow up.
oh and number 240 is the worst of all. calling someone names on the internet and typing such hateful words. lol i bet you wouldnt say that to that persons face.
I find the ad quite erotic :p~
White should apoligise by going "down" on black :P~
j/k
We would have never heared about the new portable white sony if not for the campaign...i dont think its racist they asking for attention
i guess they released the ad to put the lights on sony, they 99.9% were aware of some problems that would come out of the ad. they just want to beat the competition- ipod
so number 242 if i ever see u with a white psp does it mean that i should kick u in the face for having thats what i see in that picture my freind ...white psp's versus black psp's u see maybe #240 was harsh with his words but his not wrong...
Please note this is an advertising campaign by SCEE not SCEA or SCEI. The references to the 4th of July in this article are misleading to somehow indicate this is an American ad campaign.
Now if Sony had only released the white PSP first...
haha.
Now if Sony had only released the white PSP first we could have avoided this whole mess..
haha.
So they have a white one and a not white one. Who do they think they are? Henry Ford with a one color Model T. Why don't they try ROYGBIV just to get started. They should have all sorts of colors and patterns. Stripes, dots, paisely, tie die patterns would probably sell fairly well. Maybe they should have a Web site where the user can design the PSP to suit individual taste. If they sold multi-color and pattern toys then users might want to have more than one. Sony seems to think small is the best way to go with the small toy.
I think Sony did a A+ good job with this ad! It's striking, has contrast and appeals! With the racism part, I think its a huge improvement that most people can talk about the past with openess. Dont you think so? Whites and Blacks are all cool. Our civilization is comming to a level of sophistication where people can take negative history and portray it in a peaceful and meaningful manner.
The ad campaign looked like it started out extremely clever... powerful black and white... a constant fight for your eye's attention. Strong in both their sides and two colors natural to this world.
BUT... Black isn't submissive. White is coming out way too dominant with the way she's grasping Black's face, White seems angry while Black is calm even in all the different positions. Thus the Black vs White begins to float into racism because they didn't keep with the correct theme of simply two powerful, natural colors.
I feel they were on the right path from the start and should have went with the two powers. Powerful Black, Powerful White Fighting it out for attention. Both in fight poses for one shot. White most dominate and Black still in fight but not center attention in one shot, with black blending into the back much like the main ad for the US shows with a black background. Then for a third shot, Black most dominate and White in fight post with a white background so that she blends in.
Most ad campaigns have multiple presentations of their concept idea and usually will consist of three very well thought out layouts for different needs. Magazine, Billboard, Flyer, etc etc... Thus the three different images.
This had the great potential to be a powerful yin and yang concept, only with people and a play on backgrounds, clothing, colors... thus equality and no one side screaming of racial hints because intelligent minds would notice the equality. It would still remain Bold Advertising without coming off as it is now... tasteless and holding some subliminal hints of racism that are both formed by historical rememberances and through even just the simple display of White wearing gloves when she touches Black's face, yet not wearing them in any other shot.
A poor decision by Sony's Graphic Arts team for not being more careful with a very very tender subject and keeping it subjective to strong colors... not people.
that's a great way to put it man instead of all that bullcrap upthere but i still will say one thing shiiiiiT they should change that black chick maan that add is for america!!!!?? man black folks is gonna be pissed man African descent's looks better i beleive....im not generalizing im just saying...
Dont you see the strengh of those once called slaves..? Dont you see the impact they have on our common lives..Those African took back they pride wich we tried to strip from them and make them ashemed of who they are look how well it turn out they came out with a new atittude a new identification that everyone copy these days they came back and strong!!! you see in America they had MalcomX and Dr Luther King in SouthAfrica they had nobody (until Mandela)they were still getting pawned Meanwile those who really stand out are those From the West Indies(Central America) who really took revenge and killed all the white man's down there for freedom and claim supremacy over the land ...but you ppl dont know that all you know about slavery is the American version of it ...wich makes it look like a fairytale just because it got edited ...that's just a bit of knowledge for you guys...
Amazing how everybody concentrate on the picture of the white woman holding the black lady,
how about the other one?
The one where the black woman is in top of the white girl?
These adds are great and sexual, this is photograpy at its best,
it is art.
The only racism here is in the mind of the viewers, get over it, it is an add
and it is doing exactly what it should.
Well its one in the eye for the constant barage of black supremacy vomited out by the media at large. More plese!
Well I don't know or care much about how Europeans view the add but I guess it would probably be much more controversial among americans (black and white) because of our history. Personally I don't think anything sony makes should be considered art because it's meant to get stupid people's money and this add is tasteless from this American's point of view. Funny how it brings out the stupid trolls who are such losers they have to post their racist comments anonymously because if they said it in real life they'd get an asswhooping. In NYC anyway.
First off let me say that...
The "black dude" you all keep going on about...is actually a woman.
Yeah a woman, none of you would know it, but she's a very famous model. Her short hair allows her versatility, but that's neither here nor there...
This ad is indeed racist. The ad says that the portable white is coming yes but all together the ad is saying "Watch out for it". That's the point. But the ad itself is showing the Black and White at odds with one another. Did they have to do that? Couldn't the black have welcomed the white? No the white has the fight that black, back and forth. Blah.
THAT makes it a bad idea. Because had that "black woman" been muslim or something everyone'd be singing a different tune.
I'm from Holland and why are this commercial thinking about rasism, because we want to see that, but think not to much.
When I was young I loved black and white picture's.
Why not.
I loved everyone,also Sony
greetings
Sjaco
First off, #252, I like your analysis, but I have to point out that the white girl (damn near albino) is wearing gloves in all the shots.
I agree with 252 that they were going for sharp contrast here. We have a very dark-skinned black woman (yes she's a woman, and she has great legs as pic 3 proves) wearing all black, up against a very pale white woman wearing all white. Both have unusual haircuts and attire, which gives the whole thing a quasi-futuristic, almost cyberpunk feel. Plus both women are pretty hot in a weird sort of way.
Now I can see how people would interpret racial undertones, but I personally don't; in light of the other shots, and the phrase "white is coming," I think it's meant to be sexual rather than racial.
My first thought on seeing this ad was "She's totally about to kiss her." Am I the only one?
Whatever, However. I just grudge *****ed the dog ***** out of
a white girl that looks just like that last nite!
Tootaloo!
I want to point out that it's the first photo people are concentrating on more because it's the one that appears to have gone up as a large billboard. Do we even know if the photo of the black woman having the upper hand will be used, and if so, whether it will be distributed as well as the first photo??
I'm not sure if it's already been said but that add wasn't released in America for the obvious reason that people would take it as a racist attack rather than a clever advertising campaign. People in art college would get As for this kind of creative idea with the contrast etc but as soon as it is public there's obviously a racial entity to it.
Also if the white one came out first and the roles were reversed there wouldn't be any controversy over it. I know history etc but if that's the case then you're not using the same rules for everybody.
and is this any more offensive (just imagine it's not a cartoon) was drwan by Tim Buckley of www.cad-comic.com http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f316/Irvine_valentine/ds_ad.jpg
who in the world thinks that sista upthere looks fine are u kidding me?? she's butt ugly man ...is that the best they could find in germany ?? f**k!!!! if that ad was for the states hommie it wouldve been so different if you know what i mean (wink) they probably would kiss instead of fighting...that ad needs a new black girl.. that rigth thurr is just a diss man she couldve at least put some braids and *****t ...DAAAMMMNN!!! AAAAHHHH!!!....
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=18101
All you *****s that keep going out about racisim is the EFFING REASON rasicm still exists... Maybe if you bastards would shut the hell up, and stop blowing you lid at every little thing that YOU don't think should be right, then maybe (just maybe) we'd get on a whole lot better! Holy crap - It's a sodding advert for christ's sake...
Stop dragging every little thing down to being politically in/correct - That is *****ign getting on my tits - All the PC people of this world need to piss off and let the rest of us live in peace! One day you people are going to instagate a new-world-war just because you finally managed to piss too many people off!
I give up - Maybe we should all go to hell right now as planet earth is soon becoming somewhere that really shouldn't be inhabited!
And yes - I'm bloddy annoyed - Every which way I turn I hear yet another stupid bastard complaining about racisim where it doesn't exist, thing needing to be changed where change shouldn't be, and being told how I should NOW live, as my life before was an offence to someone.
And to the stupid effers who thought it wise - IT'S BLOODY CHRISTMAS YOU BASTARDS! Gits!
I WOULD HAVE TO SAY THAT THE COUNTRY THIS AD CAMPAIGN WAS MADE FOR WOULD BE IMPORTANT. If they run it in the USA then ya they are stupid but if its ran in lets say any other continent then no big deal. It only goes to show how programed and conditioned we are here in the states on looking for racism.
What if it had been a pic of two white women? Or any other combination of skin colours? American people are hyper sensitive when it comes to racism. I've not seen the ad myself, but from the pictures I've seen online, the ad would probably have made me think: "Nice pic, beautiful contrast."
Thats a black women not man u idiots
I've been hearing about this issue on mainstream news. People are yelling racism by this ad, but when PSP was pushed by ads of squirrels and dust balls talking in racial stereotypes, nothing was said.
dadgum, no one cares about stereotypes or insults as long as they're not directed towards self-proclaimed victims.
i remember playing soccer with a a bunch of kids back in school, when it was clear we'd win this one guy (dark) startet calling us names, he called me a f****ng white ***** and when i said he was an idiot, his friends called me a nazi whore.
we just left then, but it's anything but nice when your best friend happens to be afro-american and most of the time you're the only one with a light skin-tone on the whole playground while half of the kids grew up in racist homes and just didn't know better (and yes, it's racism when ANYONE makes abusive comments about ANY ethnicity, country or religion, doesn't matter who's the one saying it)
ok, this was a while ago, but pretty much nothing has changed around here in the cities.
people with darker skin tones (as there really isn't any black and white, look at the colors and compare them to skin) can say anything they want and you're not allowed to even tell them to shut up because as soon as you say something against them, someone cries foul.
of course no one has a problem when someone's against people from turkey or russia.
i'm from germany, btw.
as for the ads, i don't really like them, the photography's great, just not my taste.
i can see how people could interpret them as racist, but at first sight, i just thought that the blonde looked horribly fake.
they could have done better, trying to show them as equal opponents (as in picture 3) only, but i guess they think their target group wouldn't go for that.
people want to own new, cool items to be winners, to be the better ones, not to be equal to those who own the old version.
Racist my ass! Maybe Sony could have substituted a Muslim woman for the Caucasian lady (who am I calling a 'lady') but then they would have sparked a Holy War! It's also a clever way to spark the male fantasies of a ensuing 'catfight'. What newspapers should have then shown was the black peson gaining the upper hand. Then we'd see the KKK letters coming in! Sexy... tough... white... that's a product I want to buy.
The first people who has to question themselves are those who feel offended by been called black and have had to be renamed African American; my God, there are black and white people, it is not the color or your skin what makes you better person or more clever or talented.
I find Sony's new ploy to sell White PSP offencesive, I would never get a white one and I won't give up my black one either, What amazes me is that the perception of the white beating the black is poor advertising. Using women to promote this toy is offensive, why didn't they use boy's and or men, really how many women own a psp??????
for all the ppl that skipped to the end, this will sum it up for you... sony purposely based this ad off a contrevercial subject so ppl would go on and on about how it is racist... and then EVERYONE IS TALKING ABOUT EITHER RACISM OR PSPS... but not nearly as much... also treating someone overly polite is kindof the same thing as racism.. lol @70
first of do you really think they are going to show each one individualy. they are going to be three pictures on a bill board with a giant *****ing sony label at the bottom! another thing is i havent heard a thing about when the black LADY is on the white lady. im black and i honestly don't give a flying ***** about this. racist over tones my ass and even if there were you need some thicker skin if this can even attract your attention. plus this ***** won't even show up in the states because the naacp will ***** the japs for every thing it's worth if they do and because of this we all have to see some boring ass white and black hand held game next to each other instead of two *****ing lesbo's beating eachother up ***** YOU LIBERALS AND EVERBODY ELSE WHO WON'T LET ME TAKE THE BAD AND THE GOOD THAT COMES WITH LIVING IN THE UNTED STATES yea im dont now *****es.
First of all, using something controversial, in this case race, to get your ad noticed is lame. Secondly, perception is reality. How the ad is decoded is the only thing that matters. And lastly, racist ads aren't considered bad just because they revert back to the whole slavery issue; they are bad (at least for blacks in America) because blacks are a minority group, and anytime a minority group gets picked on they lash out. They are still fighting against the majority whom always seem to reap the benefits of society (because of their size).
I'm black and i find this very offensive, i like sony and their stuff but dåmn the way they made this ad makes me very mad indeed, even if they're not trying to say anything racial, this is F*cking racism, if u dont see the racism in here then YOU MotherF*ckers are the ignorant one. Like you may insult one of your friends withouth trying to be, just trying to make a simple joke or something but this is deep. Seriously, i'm like so dåmn mad right now........i'm calm but here is one thing when releasing *****ty ads make sure you get your point across withouth insulting or making fun of someone, Unless that's what you're trying to say. I'm quite mad at sony for this but hey the ps3 (well not the price) will blow all these memories away (hopefully , but i know it will)
please wake up kid.
I agree they should have taken more time to look over this ad before they put it out there because anyone in their right mind would see this as rasicism...basiclly they lost alot of sales doing this!! Their bad
