Another "Unconventional" Ad From Sony - UPDATED |
Listed in: PSP Tags: advertising, Sony

Just to be sure I wasn't being hypersensitive, I showed the picture to my girlfriend, her reaction, "Oh my God!' Then I showed it to my brother, who looked at it for a second, and then his eyes widened, "What the...!?!" So what do you guys think, is Sony just naively innocent, or are they just looking for attention any way they can get it?
UPDATE 1: Some new images have been found on the Dutch PSP homepage, which would seem to lay out the rest of the ad:

So they both get to have a go at each other, that makes it ok right? Not really, personally I still think the ad smacks of irresponsibility, and it's an underhanded and a sneaky attempt to cash in on public sentiment. Is it bold advertising? Yes, but as an artist who has done a lot of work in the advertising field, I have to say it's a very cheap move. Thumbs down on this campaign Sony.
For clarification, I feel that I should point out that while the ad itself is not necessarily racist, or promoting racism, its implications are of a questionable and tasteless nature.

There's nothing suggestive about this ad at all! I'm assuming you're thinking its a race thing or whatever, but uh... no, just no. You're reading too deeply there Freud Jr...

All the inevitable protesting that this ad will cause will get lots of news coverage, which won't show the ad of course, but will lead to lots of people going online to see the ad plus lots of other Sony information.
Sony WINS when people flock to see their advertising.
Meanwhile, any lawsuits can be tied up in courts for years and won't add up to the amount of coverage and publicity they got at society's expense.
Dirty pool, Sony! Dirty pool.
... I wonder if this would have been considered controversial say 30-40 years ago...

#10 - about the white bits; it means tan lines (i take it you're american) so the advert really was saying 'nude pics of my girlfriend here'
i dont think the ad is racist at all. i think its a very clever, metaphoric advert. it uses people in the place of the psp..think how boring it would be with a balck and a white psp alongside each other...using people brings the ad, and even the product to live..there just happens to be black people and white people to represent the PSP's

"DO NOT SEE THE RACIST OVERTONES!"
That is just stupid. Whites should ALWAYS be apologetic for enslaving the masses and should watch thier a$$e$ before coming out with denials like the ad above. period. There are no ifs and buts. This whole history denial the neo-conservatives put forth in media and society is utter BS.
YOU cannot be sorry if you are NOT SORRY. Remember that the next time you try to deny the hurt it will cause by your bigoted propoganda of "reverse racism" and "i-am-not-a-racist-I-love-the-blackies".
If anything this ad does reflect history that we are trying so hard to forget.

yes slavery was appauling, and ok it shouldn't be completly forgoten to ensure it never happens again - but it should be in the back of our minds - we, nowadays shouldnt be worried about being racist and offending people by putting a black and a white person together in an ad; guess what, Sony wernt worried..they shouldnt be..the ad is very good at representing the PSP's, and the release of the white psp.
i think its mainly americans who are/will be shocked by this (they shouldnt be) if this was shown in Europe - very few would relate racism to this ad... i'm a white male living in the UK.
once again, there is nothing racist about this - you see it as racist because you want to - its all in your head

they are just basing their ad around a controversial issue. it is clever.

Serious comment: The whole racism thing is going too far, people are far too ready to jump on the 'this is racist' bandwagon, and Sony is playing to this in order to get publicity. Is it racist? Maybe. Is it trying to look racist? Definitely.
I wish sony would stop trying to make 'different' ads, and make some 'different' games. LocoRoco is a start, but come on, the DS has the PSP beaten for games, and the only reason I use my PSP is for homebrew/development.

And yea Sony's obvuisly pursosly done this, so yep they get more pubplicity due to 'contreversy'. Think about it if it makes the news there effectivley advertsing on TV for free!!!

We need to meet new people and focus on what we learn from them. Who cares what happened XX number of years ago, if we are friends now?
And about this ad. There seems to be racist undertones, however intentional. I would think it would have been better to have a white ninja standing over a beaten black ninja. Or possibly a white and a black person on equal footing, fighting eachother. I think we would find racist undertones in any white v. black ad, anyway.
Maybe they should have had an all black person and all white person working at a common goal, and a slogan like, "Now black and white can stand together." They could replace "stand" with "fight" or play" to suit the tone they are going for. That would also play into one of the PSP's best features, WiFi.

Like Nerd said, this ad is not racist, however, because you live in the US and you're all extremely overly sensitive to "racism", for some reason, you interpret it as so. Wasn't the entire point of racism being that black people were being treated DIFFERENTLY than white people? Well, to me, it sure looks like you're still treating them differently because of their skin color, because if the ad had been 2 white people, no one would have cared.
So let's all stop and think for a moment, that maybe we shouldn't scream "NAZIS!!!" when Sony makes an ad like this.
Reply
PS.
I tip my hat to trooms comment about treating people as people regardless of race. nice 1 mate.

It is not Sony tyhat starting this "racist adcampagne". It's people like you who see a picture and start screaming right away.
If you go to www.yourpsp.com and go to the dutch site, you wil see sony has got 2 pictures with this compagne. the first one you see is the one that's being talked about here. If you wait a few seconds you will see a picture of the "black psp" standing threathingly over the "white psp".
So I ask you! What's racist about this campagne?!
Because of all you people talking about one picture makes that averybody forgets there are two.

For all the people that are like "but it's just an ad, you morons!!", just try to imagine an ad with a huge picture of gaz chambers with lots of jews dying in it, and the catch-phrase "VERMIN NEED TO BE DEAL WITH", and some spray beside it. The message would only be that the spray kill vermin, and I guess it could be considered some kind of "joke" about world war two but it just would be horribly horribly wrong.
I understand that it's not at all the same thing, but the principle is the same : the picture is just not right, it deliberatly implies that the white chick is superior to the black : even if it's a joke, it's just incredibly poor taste, just to attract some attention.
Reply
It's human nature. Infact, the Africans originally enslaved MY people! Those ****ing RACISTS!!! The Africans should forever be apologetic for what they did to the jews! But nobody has ever apologized to me, and instead, people tell ME to apologize for slavery? Stupid. I've never held slaves, and i've never been enslaved. It matters not.

I think it is naive to think that they didn`t foresee the possible interpretations of this ad.
Of course they saw the possible racist meaning....but that to them is a bonus because it means controversy and therefore extra publicity. And if ever asked about it they can play ignorant and strongly speak out against racism citing that they have people from all nationalities working for them etc etc...
I personally think its cheap and lacking in imagination.

People, racism is a form of power. When you are a white banker denying a loan to a black customer, THAT is racism. To think of your race as better than others is bigotry and prejudice, NOT racism.
You only make the ad into a racist thing. It's definitely art. "Art", granted, differs in people's minds. But this is not an attempt to pit blacks versus whites. The allegories the women represent are PSPs.

Ok. That is racist. This ad, is far from racist. Anyone past the age of 12 can see that, in any nation, of any race, as long as you are remotely intelligent.
Reply
Our generation has been brought up to ignore race as much as possible in order to make the issue go away, which (surprise) doesn't work. What is hard to realize is that this is a very good beginning to an age where race can actually be used in a context other than racism. It's a time to celebrate, not whine!
We're on the brink of something really great here. Props to the artist!

Even though this ad is being expressed in an artistic viewpoint, the artist who thought of this knew what the hell he/she was going to start! Why couldn't the black woman be dressed in white and vice versa? Why have a white woman as pale as the moon and a black woman as dark as my PSP? Why use people at all? If the ad is for the PSP, why the hell a white PSP wasn't used?!
Put this ad in the U.S. and sh** is gonna fly, for real. Now I know the artist of this ad may say: "I didn't intend any racial connotations with this ad..." (or something to this quote) but no matter what he/she says, it is too controversial. I'm not saying that this ad is depicting racism but it certainly causes speculation. This is coming from an educated black man who has earned his Masters degree who is also a teacher/mentor. Intelligence has nothing to do with racism because racism is STUPID to begin with.
P.S. Whether it's black or white, I love my PSP, dammit! FW1.5 rules!

Let's get the facts straight:
This ad campaign had VERY racist intentions.
13% of the United States is black.
A negligible amount of Holland is black.
Europeans, in general, tend to be more racist than Americans (this is not generalization, this is a trend). A major reason for this is that there are not many black people integrated into their communities. Many Europeans have only seen black people on rare occasions. Meanwhile, people like me in New York see almost as many black people as white people.
At the beginning of the World Cup, there was a major problem at which fans were screaming "monkey" at a black soccer player. In another instance, a coach of a World Cup team motivated his players during practice by emphasizing that the opponent had a black player and he degraded that player.
Europe is very hostile towards black people and surely will understand the racist implications of this. Sony is being horribly controversial with this ad campaign.
Reply
Sony has gone to the trouble to minimise controversy.
1. A female is in a position of power. (ie. not a white guy beating up a black guy)
2. The clothes match their respective colours.(ie. A white person is not beating up a black person in plain clothes.) Thus it's the colour that becomes the focus, not the colour of the SKIN.
3. It doesn't even look that violent, or make a strong statement that white is better than black...
My opinion anyway...

ps: maybe I don't see the racism here because I'm from québec, canada, we're not racism here, in montreal where I live we have about 30% of people from québec, and 70% are from other places! so caucasian white ( if you write it like that ) is a minority, nobody can really tell where you come from because of one law that obligate students to use the same school, so where you're from nobody wanna know, we don't care. But I heard on the election of the president of US george bush they didn't even count the votes made by black people, US is racist ( at least the south, maybe not the north, I mean democratic is not racism and bush follower are ( and bush was nammed president by a majority so... )
you have any comment on this ? maybe I'm not right, tell me. ( but for the votes ignored this is right, it was in the news, and inside the moore's farenheit 911 )

I should slap the piss out of you just for being a moron.
First off.... As an editor for this crappy website with all of it's increasingly moronic articles and "point of view" crap like this blatant act of website stupidity, you apparently think way too much of your stupid opinion, and you laughably belive that everyone else is instatnly going to care and see the same "tasteless" nonsense that you seem to see.
Well, you're not only an idiot, but you think way too much of yourself and your stupid opinion. You sir.... a a baised, selfish, and self-important fool.
Jeez. And people wonder why sites like digg pan on this crappy ass website the way they do. Well, this idiotic article of pure ignorance is a great example in and of itself.
This isn't a news site. It's a whining, complaining site for self important loser 14 year olds to bang up some dumb opinion peice made out of an ignorant and reactionary self-deluded observation like this.
I mean.. who gives a crap besides you? Or is it that you decided "OMG WHITE WOMAN AND OMG BLACK PERSON. I MUST WHINE ON THE INTERNET SINCE I WRITE FOR QJ.NET!!"
That's about as pathetic as making a big deal out of this article is.
As for taking issue with the "tastelessness" of this ad itself, I can irrafutably reduce your stupid opinion pretty quickly (More than i've already done, I mean.)
Firstly, if this ad has it's origins in America or Europe what gives you the right to suddenly be the one to declare what is or is not good taste for something that just depects something pretty innocuous, in the first place. It's only as "edgy" and "tasteless" as you think it is, and the main point being that since it actually does not depect any racial message besides the one that your MIND projects into it. (Probably becuase you have some serious race issues yourself)
However, if the ad's origins are in Japan, boy are YOU in for a rude awakening.
You see... In Japan... you might not realize this, but there are no black people in Japan. There are no white people, either. There are the Japanese. And something else you may not realize, is that culturally, in Japan, since there are no classifications for mixed races in Japanese society, there are no "racist" overtones in there.
Besides people of color being commonly depcted in Japan as an identifier of "A foreigner", there is no racist attitude inherent in a society where there are no mixed culturism of other races to offend in Japan.
So, if the ad is from Japan, any looks that YOU take from it are pretty damn irrelevant, and even if it's from Europe or America, you're not the damn decency police, anyway.
So.. it occours to me that rather than getting whiny and reactionary about something that offends YOU, dosn't mean that the rest of these sheep who read this site, (usually with the reading and writing comprehension of a small child) are going to see it your same way.
So in short... You fools on this dumb site should strive to continue to report on news (Besides the news reports that this website just plagerizes, word for word that is), rather than give you halfassed opinion peices on things that you can't even beghin to know what you're blabbering on about or why you are.
It's stupid articles like this that make this site suck, and it's idiot editors like you that compounbd this.
If you want to whine about stupid crap, stick to doing it on a personal blog like everyone else has to. Just becuase you whine on QJ.net, dosn't make your blubbering any less whiny and opinionated.
So take your stupid article and shove it.

Also, just because 30% of people in Quebec are from there, it doesn't mean that only 30% are caucasians. In fact, Quebec is one of the least diverse places in North America. An overwhelming majority of Quebec is French-Canadian. About 2% of Canada is black, and only 1% of Quebec is black according to the 1996 census. Only 6.2% of people from Quebec were visible minorities ("persons, other than Aboriginal peoples, who are non-Caucasian in race or non-white in color").
Just the fact that you mention that there is no segregation shows that Quebec, a province with very French origins, is not very diverse.
That statement about the US not counting votes from black people is REDICULOUS.

And its obvious that the message that they trying to portray is that white psp is better than the black psp by showing a metaphorically displaying a white person being dominant over a black person or white supremacy. The reason why this missage seems so strongly offensive to black people is because of their unforgetable, undinable broken history. This horrible history is what rendered so many african americans today so easily sensitive to any racial offensice. To even make a slight tease of anything slightly racially offensive to african americans is like making fun of a person becuase they were abused and raped by their parents when they were small. Of course anyone who hasent experianced being raped by their parents when they are small wouldnt understand the same way someone who has an ancestry of people who were enslaved, abused, murdered, tortured, and discrimated against just becuase of their skin color. Try to understand and sympathise what its like.
Im sure if this ad was of a woman being beaten down and choked by a man, or a jewish man being dominated by a Nazi, it would would stir up the same controversy.

People often look beyond the art, in its most simplistic form. Anyone can nitpick and "analyze" a piece of work and come up with wild conclusions and inferences.
A good example, as someone mentioned, is Fahrenheit 9/11. I was defiantly pulled into the whole conspiracy theory, because he did such a good job of explaining it all. He definitely "nitpicked" the situation, and made his argument. Although I could be classified as a Democrat, and on many levels agree with Moore, I can see that there is obvious stretching of information and facts. The truth of the matter is, the whole situation was blown out of proportion.
That is true with this whole series of ads from Sony.
To the untrained eye, at its most basic level, the ads are catchy and entertaining. But, as with most things, there will be an underlying argument for, or against a particular aspect. The others in the series "played" with "sexism, and racism." I personally don't see it as credible for all the reasons I stated above. It just doesn't add up.
As a digital artist, and website creator, I understand the need to create something that will captivate the general public. The most basic, and time-tested way of doing so is to offend someone. It’s just that simple. Even if one person is pissed at the fact that a white girl is "over" a black girl, a war will spawn that will capture the attention of thousands, even millions, and create opinions and feelings that were never there before. It’s all of a sudden a personal battle. You YOURSELF were insulted. Sony won. They got the attention of over 200 commenter’s and readers of QJ.
Like the "sexist" ads, women in general (especially those feminists) were "shocked and appalled," and because of that some guy/girl, possible offended (or excited) himself started paying more attention to Sony as a whole. (Sony won again.) Then, while other people just look at the ads during their daily commute, and brush it off, this guy actually stopped, and noticed this one. He thought that these ads were really offensive. He thought that there is a pattern. All it took was one person to make the comment that "this is wrong!" Now there are flame wars dedicated to Sony. All the while, Sony’s artists just won the battle. In the business, if you touch the hearts (or wallets) of one person, it was all worthwhile. Now, if that person is touched in a bad way, then the media buzz created because of that is thirty times greater.
Another poster said that "Racism is a power." (or something to that effect)
I clapped my hands at this statement. I have never been able to quickly and easily say a few words that could sum up a whole attitude towards racism, sexism, and other -isms.
Thousands of people were affected by slavery. I get it. I feel sorry for them. But, I do NOT feel an OUNCE of sympathy for anyone in this generation pulling the race card. Not one single person is directly feeling the affects of a "hate" provided by any race. It is completely WRONG for the government to give apologies, money, grants, and preferences towards the affected (these are not just black people). I am tired of there being scholarships just for being Hispanic. I am tired of there being groups dedicated towards Feminists. I am tired of there being privileges just for being Native-American. I am tired of there being cash rewards for there being a slave in your blood line. It is just power being exercised. It is simply called a “double standard.”
You are telling me that I can get away with having a group of my MAN friends, dedicated towards the "fair treatment of men nationwide?" NO! I will be a sexist. But women can do it.
You are telling me that I can get away with having a group of my WHITE friends dedicated towards the "working white man?" NO! But black

But of course all black people are lazy, chicken eating bastards. All Native-Americans have casinos. All Middle-Easterners are terrorists. All Mexicans jumped over the border. All women are feminists. All white people are from the KKK. All Germans are Nazis. All people from Holland smoke pot. All Asians are smart. Do I really have to continue?
The bottom line of it all is simply put: racism is a power. Anyone can use it at any time. It just doesn't matter that this "life changing event" happened 200 years ago. People are "still being affected."
Stop trying to make SOMETHING out of NOTHING. It is pure blasphemy. Leave Sony alone to do their jobs. We all know that Sony needs this ad campaign to work, otherwise the PSP is dead.
I really hope that this post is the post-to-end-all posts. I show no racism. I have no prejudice. This post is coming from the heart.
I also hope you all know that Sony is having all of us eating right out of their hands. Normally, it takes a couple of years, and a lot of sales for an ad campaign to be “successful.” Sony just did it in a couple of weeks. Now THAT’S balls.

Yes, it will be seen as racist.
Just by the fact that people are arguing over the nature of the ad here proves my point. The ad wasn't made with racism in mind, the ad was made to put the image of racism in people's minds but still be ubiquitous enough that Sony can duck out of any possible hate-crime damages (because there aren't any.)
The whole purpose of the ad isn't some kind of artistic statement, it's to stir up trouble, just like the previous PSP ads.
And we aren't even talking about the PSP white being a quick cash-in to the DS Lite's and iPod's designs (because God forbid Sony EVER ripped off ideas from Apple or Nintendo. No, they're completely original over there.)

You shouldn't think of a person as black or white at first, you should think of her as human.
There are two humans, one black, one white, fighting each other to show the contrast of systems, which is way more artistic than just showing 2 systems.
Also aggresion is artistic itself, it pushes human to act.
So author = closet racist
This ad = artistic

All i wanna say is that the designer was a bit clumsy to make a confusing looking add... it just look cheap! like i could pick 2 people from the street and take a picture and say that teh psp white is coming and add text...
as a designer myself i think sony could get more out themselfs to make something !Allot Better!

You see... In Japan... you might not realize this, but there are no black people in Japan.
"
Obviously you have no *****ing clue how Japanese think... yeah there are no black and white ppl in Japan (NOT! there are now!!! Go visit some bars in Japan). There is no concept of skin color in Japan.. yeah right because there is only *****ing Japanese color in japan. Japanese being one of the most racist culture in the freaking world dude. To them there is only the superior Japanese and the 'other lesser race'. Some might say: yeah right.. that's the old generation. The new generation of japanese kids are fun loving pot smoking tree-hugging folks. Sure, wait and see.

Just because the goal of SONY was to get publicity, they did it in all the wrong ways. This ad is EXTREMELY racist.

BUT... Black isn't submissive. White is coming out way too dominant with the way she's grasping Black's face, White seems angry while Black is calm even in all the different positions. Thus the Black vs White begins to float into racism because they didn't keep with the correct theme of simply two powerful, natural colors.
I feel they were on the right path from the start and should have went with the two powers. Powerful Black, Powerful White Fighting it out for attention. Both in fight poses for one shot. White most dominate and Black still in fight but not center attention in one shot, with black blending into the back much like the main ad for the US shows with a black background. Then for a third shot, Black most dominate and White in fight post with a white background so that she blends in.
Most ad campaigns have multiple presentations of their concept idea and usually will consist of three very well thought out layouts for different needs. Magazine, Billboard, Flyer, etc etc... Thus the three different images.
This had the great potential to be a powerful yin and yang concept, only with people and a play on backgrounds, clothing, colors... thus equality and no one side screaming of racial hints because intelligent minds would notice the equality. It would still remain Bold Advertising without coming off as it is now... tasteless and holding some subliminal hints of racism that are both formed by historical rememberances and through even just the simple display of White wearing gloves when she touches Black's face, yet not wearing them in any other shot.
A poor decision by Sony's Graphic Arts team for not being more careful with a very very tender subject and keeping it subjective to strong colors... not people.

how about the other one?
The one where the black woman is in top of the white girl?
These adds are great and sexual, this is photograpy at its best,
it is art.
The only racism here is in the mind of the viewers, get over it, it is an add
and it is doing exactly what it should.

The "black dude" you all keep going on about...is actually a woman.
Yeah a woman, none of you would know it, but she's a very famous model. Her short hair allows her versatility, but that's neither here nor there...
This ad is indeed racist. The ad says that the portable white is coming yes but all together the ad is saying "Watch out for it". That's the point. But the ad itself is showing the Black and White at odds with one another. Did they have to do that? Couldn't the black have welcomed the white? No the white has the fight that black, back and forth. Blah.
THAT makes it a bad idea. Because had that "black woman" been muslim or something everyone'd be singing a different tune.

I agree with 252 that they were going for sharp contrast here. We have a very dark-skinned black woman (yes she's a woman, and she has great legs as pic 3 proves) wearing all black, up against a very pale white woman wearing all white. Both have unusual haircuts and attire, which gives the whole thing a quasi-futuristic, almost cyberpunk feel. Plus both women are pretty hot in a weird sort of way.
Now I can see how people would interpret racial undertones, but I personally don't; in light of the other shots, and the phrase "white is coming," I think it's meant to be sexual rather than racial.
My first thought on seeing this ad was "She's totally about to kiss her." Am I the only one?

Stop dragging every little thing down to being politically in/correct - That is *****ign getting on my tits - All the PC people of this world need to piss off and let the rest of us live in peace! One day you people are going to instagate a new-world-war just because you finally managed to piss too many people off!
I give up - Maybe we should all go to hell right now as planet earth is soon becoming somewhere that really shouldn't be inhabited!
And yes - I'm bloddy annoyed - Every which way I turn I hear yet another stupid bastard complaining about racisim where it doesn't exist, thing needing to be changed where change shouldn't be, and being told how I should NOW live, as my life before was an offence to someone.
And to the stupid effers who thought it wise - IT'S BLOODY CHRISTMAS YOU BASTARDS! Gits!

i remember playing soccer with a a bunch of kids back in school, when it was clear we'd win this one guy (dark) startet calling us names, he called me a f****ng white ***** and when i said he was an idiot, his friends called me a nazi whore.
we just left then, but it's anything but nice when your best friend happens to be afro-american and most of the time you're the only one with a light skin-tone on the whole playground while half of the kids grew up in racist homes and just didn't know better (and yes, it's racism when ANYONE makes abusive comments about ANY ethnicity, country or religion, doesn't matter who's the one saying it)
ok, this was a while ago, but pretty much nothing has changed around here in the cities.
people with darker skin tones (as there really isn't any black and white, look at the colors and compare them to skin) can say anything they want and you're not allowed to even tell them to shut up because as soon as you say something against them, someone cries foul.
of course no one has a problem when someone's against people from turkey or russia.
i'm from germany, btw.
as for the ads, i don't really like them, the photography's great, just not my taste.
i can see how people could interpret them as racist, but at first sight, i just thought that the blonde looked horribly fake.
they could have done better, trying to show them as equal opponents (as in picture 3) only, but i guess they think their target group wouldn't go for that.
people want to own new, cool items to be winners, to be the better ones, not to be equal to those who own the old version.
