Ace Combat X

With most PSP games, the addition of wireless multiplayer is very important. Ace Combat X: Skies of Deception is the first title in the long running Ace Combat series to hit a portable console, and therefore the wireless multiplayer is even more of a big deal for this game. You can have fun in single player, but what we really want to know is what multiplayer modes will there be? Will you still be playing the game after you have completed the single player mode?

Surprisingly, the multiplayer mode for Namco's Ace Combat game for the PSP has many customizable features. There is the option to set everything from weapon strength and ammunition type, to the number of ground targets and location of the aerial dogfight. Namco, the people behind this game, have released information on five multiplayer modes that will be included in the game:
  • Traditional Dogfight - This has to be the simplest of the five modes, where you and a friend simply take off and shoot down whatever they can. However, this mode contains two sub-modes: Survival, where you try and shoot as many planes down as you can and be the last pilot in the sky; and Shootout, where you just aim and shoot, aiming to be the pilot that has shot down the most planes.
  • Base Attack - This mode is pretty self-explanatory. Players form two attack squads and try to capture the other teams base. This mode is a little more strategic than other modes as you must find a balance between capturing the enemy base and protecting your own.
  • Air Superiority - In this mode you have a limited supply of weapons, and the aim is to for a long time without being shot down with enemy planes all around you. The longer you stay airborne, the more points you will score.
  • Data Beacon - This mode is much like capture the flag modes on FPS titles. You have to capture the enemy beacon from the enemy base and bring it back to your own. The team that gets the required amount of beacons back to their base first wins.
  • Escort Battle - As the name suggests, players are split into two teams. One team will be responsible for attacking the convoy , and the other responsible for escorting the convoy to safety. Depending on the location of the fight, you can find yourself battling over land or sea.

Online?

This game still could be online, I'm not sure yet if it is. Even if its not, there have been more than enough amazing games that do not include online multiplayer across all consoles, I'm not too worried about a shortage of them. Couldnt hurt to have it though.
by - 2006-06-24 08:59:56
wtf

Am I the only one who actually read the article? It's clearly describing the multiplayer modes that will be available. How the hell can you speculate about whether or not it will have online multipler when IT'S CLEARLY STATED. Sometimes I wonder if most of the people on this site are

Yes, there was an Ace Combat title for the GBA

Like the other guy said. I've corrected you QJ staff guys a couple of times on this, but you still seem to insist that this is the first Ace Combat title on a portable system. "Oh, well it's the first one on a PSP..." Duh! In case you hadn't noticed, here's a news flash for you: The PSP is not the first portable game system. Also, what is everyone's fixation with having every single title an online multiplayer game? Just because the PSP is capable of going online, doesn't mean that every game should be centered around it. Yes, it would make sense for a game like this, but performance may be an issue. Especially in simulators. Any amount of lag can cause terrible game play experience. If you've played any simulators online on a PC, you'd know that all too well. Personally, I can't stand playing games online any more. Too many annoying jerk kids. My wife doesn't play video games and none of my buddies have a portable console of any type let alone a PSP. They're all PS2/X-box/PC gamers. I'd prefer that the developers spent their time developing the single player game since that's all I'll play. If they want to include the online or any other sort of multiplayer, that's fine, but IMHO it shouldn't be at the expense of the single player game. I'm 29, I'm all grown up, and I want a grown-up game experience, not playing with a bunch of retarded spaz kids.

GRRRR!!!!

How about instead of this crap we get ports of Ikaruga and Radiligy?!!!!
by q_dmc12 - 2006-06-24 14:07:59
@ 18

But you can kick their 455 - that's what's fun about playing against 14 yr olds }8-D
by Vipre77 - 2006-06-24 15:57:42
hahaha

FLai: Crap? Whatever there, dude.... Never heard of the games you mentioned, but they sound like Japanese titles. How about instead of you whining on here about not liking the very good Ace Combat games, you write a letter to the publishers of the games you want ported? q_dmc12: Not necessarily. I don't have time to devote 5-6 hours a day to games like the little teenagers and college kids do. The little punks get so good at these games that the casual gamer like myself couldn't hope to compete. To add insult to injury, you have to deal with the little brats the whole time you're playing against them. On a PSP title it might not be as bad because you probably won't have voice interaction, but on PC or X-box games it really gets annoying quickly.

Wow #18

Wow #18, just because you want a great single player experience doesn't mean everybody wants that. It's not that hard to find servers online that don't have jerk people, just because you had a couple of bad experiences, doesn't make it right to condem all multiplayer. Believe it or not, some people get bored playing against computer players in single mode, and love to get online to enjoy multiplayers.
by - 2006-06-24 22:38:39
'

"But you can kick their 455 - that's what's fun about playing against 14 yr olds }8-D" It's fun that you age them by three weeks? I just keep chat off/muted. It's never anything important to hear, and is pathetic no matter what the age of who's talking.
by Vipre77 - 2006-06-25 06:08:25
Hey, Ryan

My name is Ryan, too... :P Anyway, you didn't comprehend what I was saying. I'm not condemning multiplayer. I'm just saying that everyone complains when multiplayer's either not included or not up to their expectations. I think for most people, they'll be playing the game by themselves most of the time, so the emphasis should be on the single player game. If they want to include multiplayer in the game, I don't have a problem with it as long as they don't take away from the single player game. The problem is that often they spend too much time developing the multiplayer aspect of a game and then the single player game just sucks when it could have been so much more. *cough* Quake II *cough* And no, I've not had "a couple of bad experiences" with multi-player. I've been a gamer since around 1982-1983 when I got an Intellivision II system and a Commodore VIC-20. I've been gaming a long time and have played more than "a couple of games." I've got plenty of bad experiences with multiplayer games, most of them on the PC, where online multiplayer is even considered to be "done right."
by takingadvantage - 2006-06-25 17:42:07
o yea

im getting this ***** this looks tight o ya i want to get it the multi would be tight if it is like it is sounds fun
