A cautionary tale: PSP battery explodes during charging

PSP battery burn - Image 1Attention PSP owners: here's a reason why you should always, ALWAYS take care when hunting for a replacement charger for your portable piece of PlayStation gaming joy - else, the same thing that happened to PSP owner Bob Nixon may happen to you as well, causing no small amount of grief for both your pocket and gaming needs.

And if you ask, no, it's not about bricking - it's about the inadvertent destruction of your PSP, as Bob's handheld literally exploded off his nightstand.

So what actually happened? It seems that Bob had bought a generic replacement charger for his PSP, after losing the original on a trip. The PSP had been left to charge for an hour or so, while Bob chilled out in the living room watching television.

Suddenly, he smelled something burning - and as he walked around the house to investigate, he heard a loud bang. Yes, that was the PSP exploding, with so much force that it popped off the nightstand and into the floor.

Upon further investigation, Bob found out that it was the battery itself that exploded - the pack reduced to tiny bits and pieces all over the room floor, with the explosion leaving a black mark on the nightstand itself. Bob believes that it was his choice of what charger to use that led to the battery's demise - he should have checked first with Radio Shack staff before purchasing it.

Let this be a lesson for all of us who want to keep our handhelds safe: third party products may be convenient and affordable, but some of them may cause more harm than good to our gadgets.

» Learn to correctly set your voltage on universal adapters

This is an example of someone not setting their universal adapter to the correct voltage. This is NOT due to 3rd party PSP accessories. This is due to not following directions and not buying the right part for the job. If this person bought a 3rd party PSP charger, this never would have happened.

» Crystal balls???

Of course, that is the ONLY explanation. (knob). You haven't seen the charger so you don't even know if it has variable voltage setting or not. Who are you, Russle Grant or Mystic Meg or something? And anyway, isn't a universal adapter a 3rd party charger by definition - so where's the logic in that comment? You are clearly a drongo with a bug up your arse GoBob. I bet you buy string with your bacon.

i found this under further investigation(c ouldn't think of another word):

That guy was on our local news station in Orlando. He said that Sony was sending him a new PSP Slim. I guess they didn’t want him to try and sue over some electronic malfunction. He also said he waited in line for 2 days for an iPhone and got it.

People make mistakes. This guy could have kept this one to himself but instead he is sharing his mistake with the community so they can avoid it. Call him an idiot all you want, maybe the next time someone makes a stupid mistake that blows up their Psp, they won't share it with you.

by Boots - 2007-08-10 13:00
» Yeah well...

Considering it says he got the charger at Radio Shack, rather than some place that sells peripherals DESIGNED for the PSP, I'm willing to bet that yes it was a voltage issue, and it's his own fault for not checking it.

lulz i know wut happened. He was mstrbting w/. pron on his psp, and he got so excited that he prematurely jacked off all over it, and the sticky stuff made its way inside the psp. Not wanting to explain to his mummy about the situation, he exploded the battery on purpose and cooked up this scenario to cover up the truth. Now nobody will take a closer look at the white stuff here and there, but rather at the battery.

I work at radio shack if he would have asked he could have got the I GO system and the correct A54 tip for the PSP which automatically selects the correct polarity, voltage, and amperage and has no risk for messing something up by simply them being unaware of the information they need to know..

» this is odd, why is the picture so small?

i have to say its fake. i mean if the explosion left scorch marks on the nightstand their should be at least some blackening of the psp logo on the back. (and believe me i've seen my fare share of electronics going BANG ) and when the battery is involved its really gets messy with scorch marks everyware

It has nothing to do w/ 3rd party psp equipment. It equipment that wasn't designed to be used w/ the psp. And someone who didn't know how to pick the correct "non" psp equipment that would work properly.

by noob - 2007-08-11 03:13
» noob?!!??

ur such a noob.ur not meant to use any other equiptment apart from what sony gave u wid the psp .dip*****.

if you lost ur charger, you should'nt just plugged any other ***** in the ac.y dont you use ur common sense and buy a BATTERY PACK that was designed for the psp.Until then go research some more.im sure ur psp doesnt work after what happend.

» Serves him right

He decided to nickel and dime on a battery and that's exactly what's going to happen. It's tough to feel bad for someone who doesn't follow a basic purchasing rule:YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. Now him saving himself 2 dollars has now costed him almost 200 bucks now... I have 3 batteries and all of them are Sony brand and I've NEVER had or doubt I will have any problem like that. This should be a lesson to all. I'm not some Sony fanboy or their corporate shill, this just proves that you should only use official products that he could have at least gone to Sony to talk about possible warranty replacement. Oh well.

by bambam - 2007-08-11 06:12
» Damn!

That's why I havn't taken my "seemingly" third party battery out of it's pack yet.

It says Sony, but I bought it from a market in china, so the chance is high that it's a copy, lol.

Sony should extend the warranty on them. Mines just more than a year and a month and the conductor inside the yellow bit snapped clean off. In the dark; lost. And Just as well I stopped using the travel charger for use in any country except Africa, or i would have no fingers on my right hand.

» this already happened in the uk

it happened to my cousins mate who was charging his psp with a charger which he bought from argos and he charged it and was playing then the psp went on fire as smoke started to come out of it and his Matrix Reloaded UMD melted. He brunt his middle and index finger and nearly lost a thumb but lost a psp. anyway he got compensation from argos for selling faulty products and got £1000.

£1000 dont repair fingers and thumbs argos.

Bountyhunter53

by bountyhunter53 - 2007-08-11 13:23
» oh yea i forgot

and argos replaced his psp cause he was with the argos warranty. Luckly he never burnt his house down as the psp just burnt away his carpet as well now he has a large whole going thorought the carpet so u can see the floorboards. Oh well that also teaches you buy original sony chargers. i aint going to do this mistake who do you take me for Argos.

Argos are fools thinkin you can buy new finger and thumbs with £1000. FOOLS!!!!!
