20 Great Games For The PSOne Emulator: Part 1 of 2 |
Listed in: PSP Tags: emulator, gaming, PS1
Ó

Let me start by saying this is by no means a "10 best games on PSOne" list, what follows is simply a stroll down memory lane highlighting some of the classics that debuted on Sony's cute grey progenitor. It's a list of cool, fun games, some more well known than others. It's a list of games that were great then and will most certainly be great today. The PSone era had so many ultra cool titles it's mind boggling, creating this list and researching all the titles that came out for the platform, it occurred to me that it's no wonder Sony dominated the competition. And now in no particular order, let's have a look at some of these classics shall we?
Vagrant Story: Vagrant Story had a real unique sense of style and a classy, grown up vibe that just drew you into the complex, compelling story. The graphics were intelligently stylised to take maximum advantage of the PSOne's teeny polygon budget, and the gameplay was refreshingly different from the majority of RPG's out at the time. It used a real time battle system that allowed you to focus attacks on certain parts of the enemy's anatomy, and chain attacks together with timed button presses (called Break Arts) for maximum damage. The cinematic presentation of Vagrant Story holds up with the best of the best, using its real time in-game engine it often approached and sometimes surpassed the amazing presentation of even the legendary Metal Gear Solid.
Rollcage: Many combat racers try to balance racing with actual combat, but few have come as close to perfection as Psygnosis and ATD's ultra fast paced futuristic racer. Hot on the success of Wipeout, Rollcage adds wheels back into the equation, but offers the ability for racers to reach such ludicrous speeds that they're capable of racing upside down on the ceilings of tunnels and on the sides of cave walls. The frenetic pace of the game was further enhanced with some truly wild weaponry, including destructible environments that could come crashing down onto the track, homing missiles, electrical weapons, a wormhole gun that teleports its target one position behind you and loads more. Let's have some infrastructure play with this one Sony!
Heart of Darkness: It's a crying shame Heart of Darkness got treated the way it did, constantly delayed and lounging in development hell for nearly five years, the game finally debuted on the PlayStation in '98... to the sounds of crickets chirping. Heart of Darkness tells the tale of a young boy on a quest to find his dog, Whiskey, who disappeared during a freak solar eclipse into a world filled with wonder and oozing with imagination. Very few platformers since have been as likeable, inventive and quirky as this gorgeous 2D side scroller, a game very much in the vein of Doug Tennapel's The Neverhood and Abe's Odyssey. Let's hope Sony's virtual console will provide a better surrogate home for this charming cartoon classic.
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night: A brilliant marriage of action rpg and exploration, this entry in the Castlevania series had lush 2D graphics and a huge amount of depth and customization to offer. Memorable lines such as Richter's, "Die monster, you do not belong in this world!" and Dracula's retort, "But enough talk, have at you!" will ring in gamers ears for years to come. We're yet to see a videogame vampire slayer quite as cool as Alucard (that's Dracula backward y'know). One thing that makes SotN so satisfying is the amount of game there is, you can spend hours and hours just exploring Dracula's castle, finding secret passageways and trapdoors and hidden rooms scattered all over the place. The retro style graphics and oodles of content would be a great match for the PSP's glorious screen and built in save to memory card features.
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver: Although the story began with the excellent RPG Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, the epic adventure really took off with Soul Reaver. We were introduced to the brooding tortured soul, Raziel, brought back from the abyss we follow him as he embarks on his journey across the eerie land of Nosgoth, slaying his vampire brethren on a quest to find his master Kain and pay him back for the torment lavished upon him. Soul Reaver featured beautiful graphics and award worthy level design, and a truly epic story that laid the foundation for an amazing trilogy.
Crash Team Racing: Nearing the end of the PlayStation era, Naughty Dog, having released three stellar Crash Bandicoot games decided to take the furry marsupial in an altogether different direction than everyone was expecting. CTR was Naughty Dog's first foray into Mario Kart-esque cutesy racer territory, and many were uncertain if the boys at the kennel really had the chops to take on the ragin' red plumber. But they do, and they did, Naughty Dog arguably took all the best elements of Mario Kart 64 and improved upon them by adding slicker graphics, a consistently smooth frame rate, zanier weapons and tracks and a simple but intuitive boost mechanic. This one would be an absolute riot if it supported four player infrastructure.
Dino Crisis: Dino Crisis came at a time when the world was infected with Dino-Mania, it was basically Resident Evil but with million year old reptiles instead of zombies. Looking back there are certain gameplay elements of Dino Crisis that are somewhat similar to those found in Resident Evil 4, such as the timed button mashing scenarios and a couple of the large scale boss battles. The games got fluid graphics, real time backgrounds (as opposed to the pre-rendered kind found in the RE games of the time) and of course some of the most unintentionally hilarious dialogue this side of a Chris Redfield soliloquy.
Driver: Before Grand Theft Auto, there was Driver... wait that's not right. Before 3D Grand Theft Auto, and before the Driver series of games started its downward spiral, there was Driver. Driver was a game with a sleazy sense of seventies style, substance and focus. You played an undercover cop masquerading as a getaway driver, and you were to get your clients from point A to point B, simple, no sandbox gameplay, no living city, just pureunadulterated driving fun. Check it out for the crashes, the physics, and the badass seventies tunes baby.
Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions: "What's this? Where's the original Metal Gear Solid?" You ask, simply put, we've all played MGS, we know it's great, it's awesome, so why bother putting it on the list really? VR Missions came out a while after the first groundbreaking game on PSOne, and promised to tide us over till MGS: 2's historic debut on Sony's new hardware, the PS2. VR Missions is a series of gameplay scenarios that take the very essence of the MGS games, the core gameplay, and delivers it in a potent package that'll have even the most hardcore tactical stealth action specialists scrambling for a game guide. There are over 300 missions squeezed onto the disc, and each one's more complicated to solve than the last. If you're a guy who believes in gameplay over graphics, then this is your nirvana.
Medal of Honor: A first person shooter... on the PlayStation? Yep, in case you've forgotten, the famous WWII franchise from EA got it's start on the great grey machine, complete with creative input from good ol' Stephen Spielberg. Masterful sound production, addictive gameplay, frenetic multiplayer action and suicidal Nazi hounds from hell made this one a game to remember. If you're an FPS fan and you've never played the original, give this one a go and get to know your roots, there's plenty to love. And that about rounds out the first ten in our series of 20 Great Games to get for the PSOne Emulator. Hope you've enjoyed taking this little detour down memory lane. As always I'd love to hear from you, so why don't you share what your top ten games to get for the emulator are, they just might be on the next list!

One of my fav. games of all time.
HEck, I still connect the "great grey machine" to play vs. my bro. awesome music, and game play.

Does anyone here remember the Oddworld series? Perhaps another candidate for Sony's emu . . .
And I'm sure Tekken will get a spot somewhere . . .
And before anyone starts whining about what games they want for PSP, remember the lack of a second analog stick.
Ape Escape played atrociously on the PSP when compared to its original debut on PSX.

I hope command&conquer makes it.

some of these i had forgotten existed but I will be dusting them off and having some fun 2moro. rollcage pwnd wipeout all the way, what a killer soundtrack that game had.
this article could have been named the games that time forgot as these are classics that no one mentions anymore. some of them have next gen sequels but in my opinion they cannot live up to the quality of these originals.
abes oddysey had better be in the next 10 as that game ruled the world.
i still hold vagrant story as having better graphics than some current gen games. that and mgs squeezed absolutely everything possible from my ps1.

I can't wait for the PSOne Emulator. I want to play Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and Final Fantasy 7 on my PSP!!

I'm thinking they'll have patched the devhook hack by the time the PSOne emu comes out, so 1.5er's only hope is PMF....and I think he might be gone.
Also - ROLLCAGE FOR THE WIN!!
You just reminded me of the best racing game ever. God I loved that game. If I could emulate PSOne on 1.5, that's the first ROM i'd get (buy from Sony if necessary).

I hope in part 2 though to see a few of the best. My list would probably contain FFVII, Tomb Raider (I, II and III), Worms possibly, Gran Turismo, pong, Tekken 2, and probably Kula World (I never did complete that!)
Can't wait for the PSOne emulator!

Games like Rollcage, CTR and Heart of Darkness are all pretty much pick up and play. Though maybe Heart of Darkness is a bit too "not-pick-up-n-play" but i will it would work.
Tekken, GT, ridge racer ? All those are, or are coming to the psp in new versions, so no need for those. If you are a fan you may have them on your PS1 anyway :)
I would like to see Crash Bandicoot: Warped too. Parappa The Rapper, remember that one :D? Would be so awesome too.

that's about all i can think of for now. i'd personally love a graphically upgraded Silent Hill, and brand new, PSP exclusive Castlevania title. it's such a great handheld, and i'm glad this second year is really showing what the system can do, emulator or not.

If Sony had released the first generation of games they would release for the PSX emulator this would be news. But it's just some guy daydreaming about what he'd like to see. Boring + pointless.

Clearly from the responses, your opinion (regardless of how much you are entitled to it) is in the minority. ;)

Half the peopleasking for it probably are just doing it because other people say it "the best"
it had a very obvious story line and sub-par character development. The main reason tis so like was that it was the first 3d FF. I prefered FFVIII (8) due to its interestin plot, inovative battle system, and relatable characters. The game was much more belivable than a skiny spiky-haired guy holding an impossibly huge sword fighting another guy with another ridiculusly large sword (althugh Sephiroth was probably the only redeeming quality of FFVII).

Among others like...
- Metal Gear Solid
- Breath of Fire III/IV
- Gran Turismo 2 (Kinda a no-brainer seeing that its a first-party developed emulator)
- Final Fantasy VII/IX (Just for the shear number of fans, although I prefer Tactics over both, IX would be worth the price of admission)
- Suikoden (If the 2-pack doesn't make it here, the boat has already passed anyway...)
- Xenogears
- Intelligent Qube
- Resident Evil(s)
- Wild Arms (Never got around to playing it, the spell system intrigues me)
- Front Mission 3
Can't think of others off the top of my head at the moment, but basically all I want to play is FFT... lmao. I would be happy if that was the only game supported.

seriously anyone who remembers that game and beat it was so sad when lisa dies towards the end easily as sad if not sadder than the aeris thing in ffvii oh well it was an awesome game the ps1 graphics how the textures where kinda blurry was kind of scary in its self and was a much scarier game than the ps2 games
it was so much better than re in so many ways real 3d, better story (if you actually take the time to understand it), less retarded production values(you all know what im talking about "master of unlocking") and even better music/ambience
any way it best be on the next list
(where is silent hill 5 i need it)

- fifa .(forgot what year).
- Klonoa

1) I'll probably get some final fantasies first, just for their longevity and the nostalgia value. Plus, I never beat FF IX, so I'll need to get that started again.
2) I think the PSP has enough racing games on it already to not need the PSX emulator to compensate for it.
3) "ANGER" (106), you phool! Now I know that Lisa dies, and I no longer wanna play Silent Hill. You phoolish spoiler, you.
4) Einhander and Resident Evil would have made good additions to the list, as well as Brave Fencer Musashi.

Definitely Tekken 3, Metal Gear Solid, Gran Turismo 2, Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere, and Megaman Legends 2. Not the first one, cause it sucked...
Hopefully Legend of Dragoon comes out for it, even if it would take up an entire 4 gig mem stick. I loved that game to death...

Did you forget about the actual unit marketed by Sony as the "PSX"? That was completely different from any version of the original PlayStation? The actual PSX, IIRC, was a PS2 with an included PVR and a cd/dvd burner and was only sold in Japan because it didn't do very well? Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Yes, I know the original PlayStation was called the PSX in it's short-hand form. However, since Sony released a unit actually branded as the "PSX," it now makes more sense to refer to all regular PlayStation units as PSOne or PS1 or whatever simply for clarity's sake.

- Metal Gear Solid (seriously, VR Missions is basically an add-on, not a complete game)
- Final Fantasy Series, Chrono Trigger & Cross, Tactics Ogre and Legend of Dragoon (Oops! How can you forget about these? Each one individually kicks Vagrant Story in the nuts any day... I understand, maybe you don't like RPGs)
- Twisted Metal Series (Anyone besides me remember all the fun in the living room blasting friends to shreds?)
- Tekken Series (Seriously...Great fighting & one of the best CG Rendered Movies on the system)
- Resident Evil 1 & 2 (Survival Horror genre pioneers....Anyone? I think only Silent Hill has been able to rival these two, so there's another game)
- Gran Turismo & Ridge Racer series (I could never pick one over the other, as they would complement each other in areas where they were missing something that the other didn't have)
- Parasite Eve Series (This one would better all the little failures found in games like Resident Evil, Dino Crisis and Silent Hill. That and the story line alone made it worthy of game greatness...The graphics were pretty innovative for that time, too.)
- Marvel vs. Capcom (anyone who still owns a copy of this, still plays it at least once or twice a month, so this game speaks for itself)
- Jet Moto (I think everyone got to own this one)
- Battle Arena Toshinden (This fighter was beautiful when it came out, and so simple to play, too)
- Jumping Flash! (Anybody Remember this one? It was more addictive than sex!!! Well, not really, but you'd still play the part of a rabbit lol.)
...And a whole lot of other games, that weren't on that list...Not to flame or anything, but some of those titles in the list are copies of other games (CTR=MarioKart) and that makes them mediocre to me.
