Yellow Dog Linux free version officially released! |
Ó
All those who've just got a PS3 for Christmas and are thinking of installing Fedora Core, stop! Terrasoft has released the free version of Yellow Dog Linux. While you might be wondering that Fedora Core is much more popular, I'd advise you to go with Yellow Dog Linux because it is based on Fedora Core itself. Secondly, and much more importantly, it is very much optimised for the PS3, since it's specially made for it.So now that you know about it, how would you go about installing it on your PS3? If you're new, you can just skip over to the download and further instructions section. For all the newbies who've just learned of this, I'll give you some info which will lay down the basics for you.
To install a second operating system on your PS3, you will need the following:
- A PLAYSTATION 3 with a Hard Disk (20GB is fine).
- USB Keyboard, USB Mouse.
- A USB Storage Device.
- An ISO of the desired Linux distro.
- Sony PS3 Other OS Installer.
- OtherOS.bld file for the respective distro.
- Blank optical media + burner.
- Other things which will be specific to every distro.
Now for the download links to the required stuff:
Sony PS3 Other OS Installer
otheros.bld for Yellow Dog Linux ( here / here )
Yellow Dog Linux 5 ISO image ( here / here ) (3.3GB ISO!)
Install guide for Yellow Dog Linux ( here / here )
Now that you have the required stuff, the first thing you should do is go through the install guide a couple of times. In case you don't understand any step, make sure to ask in the forums for clarification. If you're not lucky enough to have a Hi-def TV yet, we do have a guide to install Yellow Dog Linux on SDTVs.
Bear in mind that our wiki is still in its infancy and as such, won't be complete. We'd love it if you might want to fill it up with how-tos, instructions, or anything else you have in mind. We will be officially launching it sometime in the near future, so if you'd wait until then, no worries. Also, thanks to mussadek from our forums for the heads-up!

Check: The IGN thinks Ps3 Better Tha Wii Thread
check !
it's quite nice that they released this for free. has anyone else installed this yet? I'm curious to see if it has any issues with it, or how compatible it is with programs
I just finished putting in YDL for PS3 and had no problems after getting the necessary files listed in the article, I haven't played around with it much besides doing some basic changes like wallpaper and such, but I wasn't connected to the internet automatically, gotta configure that part later...
thx for collecting all needed stuff URL's on one place! ;)
I haven't the slightest idea on how to do this. I don't know what I need to Download or where I can download it. Please Help
I got it
Can you brick your ps3 doing this?
Only bummer so far that I found, other than the Sony lock out of the GPU.
Ha! Chances are slim to zilch; it all runs over top of the PS3 firmware off of the HD.
The download speed on this is horrible. I'm getting a constant 30-50 kB/s. Anyone have any other mirrors?
How would you go about installing yellow dog if you have already install fedora on the ps3? will there be any complications or will yellow dog override fedora? has anyone tried this?
does anyone know if u can switch back to xmb after installing ydl?
does anyone read it anymore? it says in the PDF manual that you type boot- game - os at the kboot screen.
Unfortunately, YDL does not support wifi at the moment. If you want internet access you will need to run it through a cable.
It was easy, just follow the YDL install PDF. A.k.a. start over but you won't need to reformat the drive.
im excited as hell to do this but i don't have a usb keyboard/mouse. I was wondering how good it is (what programs can run on it etc.) and if its worth it to go and buy the usb keyboard/mouse. thanks
I downloaded the ISO file that was supposed to be 3.3GB... but when it finished it was about 1.4GB. Did something change?
The file i downloaded is actually around 3.5GBs... I guess the person who wrote the article is just really bad at rounding numbers.
I was wondering if there was any way I could send the ISO over Wifi or something like that becuase I dont have a DVD burner. Any suggestions?
on the SDTV install how do you install the GUI?
There is a Torrent for this yellowdog os.. search google and use it to download ..
for the people that stare at the kboot: and nothing happens you prolly need to extract the iso file you downloaded. use winrar to do this and then burn all of those files you extracted as a data dvd
Yeah, I dont have a burner either. Was curious if maybe YDL can be installed via an external hard drive- anyone know if this is possible?
omfg the downloads are so damn slow any one wanna post a link were i can find the necasery downloads that go faster than *****in 30 kb/s
lol um yea i realy dont care if i have this anymore but i have installed the otheros.self and otheros.bd and i have not made the dvd yet so i was wondering since i changed it to startup other os is ther a way i could just delet it or make it back to game os with out having to install the linux dvd
I have downloaded this otheros.bld from multiple websites but everyone keeps telling me it corrupted when i try to install other os from the ps3. Can anyone shed some light please.
u need the otheros.self from sony but do not make the mistake i did download the linux program and burn it before u install anything or u get stuck waitin on the dam download and wont be able to use ur ps3
if any one is thinkin of doin this just stop lol it seems like a cool thing i havent been able to get my ***** to work yet its just a pain in the ass not worth *****in with untill it is a little more developed
you are right
Does any one know if this can be installed from a memory stick. It's a 4 gb.
every time i try to send the extracted files from ydl it says that an problem happend
Alright, well...I made a boo boo. Because I was just too head-strong to heed warnings, I decided to put this damn thing to good use and run the installation WITHOUT a keyboard. So here I am, looking at the kboot re-run over and over, asking myself if there's anyway back to XMB since my lack of a USBoard. Someone email me a yes or no answer. Pauljr83@aol.com The total dumbass.
hold down the power button for 10 seconds the ps3 should restart and ask you to plug in a controller via usb then press the ps button this will bring you to the option screen
