Xbox director: Sony has a history of under-delivering on promises

Greenberg: “Sony has a history of over-promising and under-delivering” - Image 1Aaron Greenberg, the director of product management for the Xbox 360 and Xbox Live, rocked the boat earlier this month when he lampooned Sony's line-up for 2008. In case you missed it, Greenberg basically stated that Sony is slow to deliver.

Greenberg isn't through yet though. He had more to say on the matter in a recent Major Nelson podcast (the same one where he talked about what's in store for Xbox Live Arcade).

I was basically expressing my frustration at a lot of specific things that they had promised over time. I think Sony has had a history of over-promising and under-delivering.

[I was] just using actual facts of all the things that they had promised. [...] I think as an industry, we owe it to our customers to be straight with them. I think that some of the stuff weÂ’ve talked about, while the reaction may not always be positive, weÂ’re going to tell youÂ…

People just want you to be straight with them. We know titles slip, we know things happen, and thereÂ’s little we can do to control that, but if we promise something - I think as an industry - we need to start living up to our promises. As an organisation, i think Xbox has a pretty good track record of doing that.

Sony is no stranger to harsh words from Microsoft, if you remember Peter Dille's remarks on the PlayStation 3 last year. If they managed to maintain their silence on Dille's remarks, it won't be surprising if they don't respond to Greenberg either. We'll wait and see. For now, you can listen to more of what Greenberg has to say by following the link below.

theyre right the ps3 is a huge disapointment in terms of games

GTA4 was set to be a good game the story is plainly crap

i know there will be fanboy comments after this about saying wiat till august when RFOM 2 comes out .....

basically the only game that will save the ps3 now is COD5 and thats if its exclusive which it isnt

i dont own a 360 or xbox by the way, everything i buy i try to buy from sony, purely because i think their hardware is good strong and long lasting unlike the xbox's which have a tendency to just blow up lol

cod5 you allready know is not goin to be an exclusive... and all ps3 exclusives have not failed.. you either hte em or love em but the reality is that they did incredibly good last year and will do even better this year.. you said the only thing that can save the ps3 is cod5? cod5 is gunna suck for both systems for the fact treyarch is back on it...

oh and another thing.. you said "save" like its dying wen it is only 100 and some odd units behing xbox 360 in the us only.. iwitch is ms biggest and only market..

.... btw metal gear 4 will end up killing all the other systems (cant include wii cuz they are some wut in partnership with sony)... sony has a bigger charicter line up this year then anyother system. xbox is the one that needs something to save it.

# so xbox manager hate ps3? wow, I'm supprised.platon 2008-05-27 08:03
I suppose that if you ask a sony manager, he'll say that against M$...

Only nintendo won't care since they make too much money right now, but I hate them to NOT CUT the price of the wii, I mean, can't they do more units per month and drop the price at least 50$? That's not cool for the fans...

# More trash talk??Lifeline 2008-05-27 08:12
Will M$ just shut up and grow up. All we hear is M$ trashing Sony or the PS3 how predictably imature of them.

Oh and if they want to be straight with their customers why don't they start being straight about their own products instead of other people's.

I don't know what this guy has to brag about. MS has about the biggest let down factor of any company out there. The XBox 360 has gone through how many revision trying to get rid of the RROD? And not giving their customers Full HD right off the bat? Good move there since all signals go digital in Feb. and everyone will have to switch anyway.

The best though is producing a version of their system that doesn't have an HDD. WTF, what's the point of having a broadband system without at least that? Even the Wii lets you add storage options.

I purchased an Elite a couple of weeks ago and was surprised to see the lack of features that should be there. I have to use AA batteries instead of having a rechargeable battery pack. ( Unless I want to spend another 20-30 bucks) The power supply is literally a brick, 3"x3"x9" if not more! When I turn on my (Falcon MoBo) 360 Elite, I'm afraid it's going to take off and fly out the window it's so loud. (My PS3 doesn't make a sound in comparison.) Finally, they had the foresight to not include WiFi, the only Next-Gen system to do such. I don't know about you, but I did the math, and the 360 is almost $200 more than the 80 gig PS3 when you calculate in all the extra crap you have to buy!

So, when Greenberg starts ranting about Sony not delivering, he better make sure that M$ and their Green monster has at least meet par with what comes out of the box on all PS3s. Plus I don't have to worry about my PS3 killing over from overheating.

Now, if we take a look at MS's other letdowns

Win ME

Win Vista

the Zune, should I go on?

The PS3 games that matter come out in japan first usually.

Translating games takes time. Especially when your freakin redoing lip sync for another language. PS3 has the leading edge on gaming while creating new genres and working on making the old ones even better.

Xbox sucks in japan dude. Im sorry more ppl want to ride the final fantasy air ship or play the next best 'side scrolling action games' and JRpgs than go steal a car or decapitate someone in the latest gta clone.

Good things take time and I believe sony has biding their time more effectively than M$.

MS sounds like sega to me now a days. Like a little fish that needs to be thrown back into the pond.

What makes a good game these days is flashing lights and screaming words like BONUS at the end of short goals.

Long live japanese gaming genres, good night the next crap game that rockstar or ea brings out.

No collector alive wants to spend $60 on a game that is built with a half life of ONE YEAR tops. They hope their game will have and keep some of the value they spent on it yknow. (NFL200X, NHL200X, CARDRIVING OFFROAD, ONROAD and FORMULA will take a HARSH backseat to GranTurismo or most other J racers too.

They know how to make money without making decent games it seems. Enjoy the best PC has to offer 'better' on your Expensive ass 360. I hope you dont loose a cord too.

What in the hell does buggy MS software have to do with their console system? Is Vista buggy as hell? ABSOLUTLY!!! So again i ask, what does buggy PC operating systems have to do with the console war?

I'm a hardcore Sony supporter, but this Greenburg is right. Sony delivers a lot of the time, sometimes overdeliver, but we were promised Home a long time ago, and it was supposed to be done by May 2008. Now we have to wait basically almost an entire year to get it. He's right but Microsoft needs to fix that Red Ring of Death issue before they try to talk about someone else. You do NOT know how many friends came to me and told me their 360s died.

Sony on the other hand, uses Hype, and empty promises ALL the time. And i have All THREE PS systems.

I can't believe you people that use to love the xbox organal and then you buy a 360 then went to PS3 and then ***** at microsoft for no damn reason becasue newer consoles are better.

but remember the good memories that Microsoft did bring us?

Windows 98 ah the joy it was so cool back then and run smooth

Windows ME well yeah that suck but we move on did we?

Windows XP bad untill microsoft work all the bugs out and now everybody that uses 98 loves it now!

Windows Vista I dont have no problem with it, if you guys do have a problem. Buy one and dont download one and MAKE sure you update.

Microsoft has been in our home for years longer then Sony. bet yet you guys *****ing at Microsoft like their the worst company ever set on earth. Hell without them we would of been on DOS or Mac and chease or Linux. Their wouldn't be a internet like this today.

Sony does over promise and under-deliver on pretty much everything, but MS does it too. For instance

Xbox 360 in general, not selling as well as MS and consumers thought it would, not the media center powerhouse MS said it would be

XBLA not nearly living up to the both the publics' and MS' expectations

XNA Game Studio not being anywhere near the product MS said it would be. There STILL are no signs of usermade titles releasing anytime soon

LIVE Anywhere, same as above, not the service MS said it would be

Well, besides the fact that Windows Vista did NOTHING worth the upgrade, and XP still has many bugs and random performance issues to this day, I'll make a comeback. You think Microsoft is awesome with customer service *cough*33% failure rate*?

Ok, take Halo 2 for PC, the BIGGEST disgrace to ports known to *****ING MAN.

Halo 2 on PC encourages EVERYONE to buy the PC-360 controller to play. If you want to use keyboard/mouse, it will STILL say things like "Press A to jump" even though Spacebar is to jump. You think you will play online for free on the PC version? LIEZ. You must SUBSCRIBE to play a PC FPS ONLINE. You have to make a separate Xbox Live account even if you already have one to play. The hell is that? To make it worse, they use matchmaking to put you in a server. That's the first PC game EVER that I have seen to use matchmaking. That's *****ing ridiculous.

The Slim PSP offered no advantage over the classic PSP. All it had were 32mb more of RAM, which was useless as this was only used for the UMD Data Cache function, and you could use Skype on the slim PSP. Neither of those are essential.

The Slim PS2's only advantages over the fatty PS2 were that it had the network adapter built in, was way smaller and used up less space, and was just awesome. I bought slim ps2 right when they came out. They weren't high as hell, and you can get one nowadays for just $129.99...

The slim PS2 didn't come out until 4 entire years after the original, and the slim PSP 3 years after it's original Japanese debut, so there's no way anyone got shafted. There was no self-destruct timer that prevented older systems from working when the slimmer systems were released.

Sony + Nintendo were in the console gaming market long before Microsoft was, and I'm sure not many people cared for crappy DOS games or anything back then.

Neither of them are laughing at me and they're not stealing my money. I love gaming, I love their products, so I'm happy.

mainly because they know their console is stronger and dont need to defend it

Bill Gates said" If sony made a million bricks people would buy them" and then went on to pay 50,000,000 dollars dfor exclusive DLC for 360 as well as rumours that they made payments to a few reviewers about halo 3. Sony doesnt do stuff like this because they have a stronger consoloe and dont need to.

Microsoft is the rumor king, remember all the "proof" that MGS4 was gonna come to the 360? The love to spread rumors, and make false accusations, as well as mention all the exclusives companies give them, exclusives aren't exclusive if the company (Microsoft) has to pay for them excessively. I love my 360 and PS3, but M$ needs to seriously STFU.

Sony has already surpassed Microsoft console wise in technology, so who is really under-delivering? The only thing Microsoft has going for it is shooters and mini games off the Marketplace. Sony has got Blu-ray, PSP and a growing library of bulk content. It seems Microsoft is the one who needs to catchup if they don't want to be left in the dust.

For the record, the PS2 Slim was a piece of junk and there were (and still are, mind you) incompatible games on it. And before i get flagged as a XBOX fanboy, i have PSX, PS2, PS3, and PSP, (both fat and slim), and my 360 is sadly sitting in my closet because of a RROD...

anyways, look, Microsoft shouldn't be flaming anyone, considering their last generation of hard/software. It's been pathetic to say the least. and though Sony DOES take an eternity to do everything they do, most of the time, the final product is worth it (i said most ...lol) I sincerely hope Sony doesn,t respond to MS in retaliation, because i think that would make them just as pathetic as MS in this case. As they did last time, they should ignore the comment and go on with their work days. No one can criticize them for that. Microsoft is like the 2008 American Democratic running, trying to slander their opponent, so they can win.

I don't predict that working for them though, and in the long run, all they're really doing is injuring their own credibility, and hurting their image.

It's too bad they released their system with all of those flaws, the major ones being the RRoD, and the RBoD, because with all the money they lost on repairs, they could have released a later, better system, worth being proud of.

anyways... i should get back to work lol

Are you mad ad MS for re-release a re-release of a system that was suppose to be dominate? You specifically pointed in your post early that you were mad at Sony for their slim line they use. How about all the 360's sold from 05-06 that did not have the hdmi port and even not a choice for the 120gb drive. The only thing Sony hasnt done correctly in my opinion is how much they have promoted home to just not have any level of a release to the public that one it. That is the worst thing they have done. But that is also a good thing because if they release a bad product they they are grilled for that. OH and that bogus figure of 33% 360 failure rate i think is false. If you ask 20 people that own the system if it ever died and MS has to fix it only 3 would say there system works great no issues.

The way I see it every firm as it's pros and cons but MS is a more of a let down than Sony.

ex.)

1.) MS just acknowledges the RROD after 2 years when the 360 first came out.

2.) MS promises you that their HD DVD Player will win the format war and then it loses.

3.) MS promises you HD but doesn't give you an HDMI Cable until 2 console models later.

4.) MS promises to give you great games like Halo and yet they rush games.

5.) MS promises great online but now you have to pay /year and you need to get the Wi-Fi Connector for 0.

6.) MS promises you a great line up and only offers 3 games that are appealing but only advertises 1.

Gears 2 over hyped by media, GTA IV DLC content which we have no prior knowledge what it is or when it's going to come out.

I can go on all day.

I'll admit I'm still mad at Sony for not giving me a confirmed date when Home will release and not delivering on the XMB.

But I'll get over it it'll come out when it's ready.

Quality takes time to make which now I understand.

Home comes out in Autumn 2008 (Confirmed on Playstation Day).

XMB still not sure maybe It'll be released at E3 2008.

Sony (2 problems) compared to 10 problems (Microsoft).

I gave you my list of pros and cons.

Where's yours people?

I tried to catch the gist of what you're saying here, and i agree with what you say. From my point of view, Microsoft is scared of being utterly crushed by Sony, and they therefore use slander, and made up figures to try and make themselves look good, while trying to make Sony look bad. What i was trying to say before is that they would have had a chance at being even close to being able to compete with Sony if they would have released their console a bit later, and had the time to test their systems, like Sony did. As for your comment about home, i try not to pay too much attention to what is going on in the rumor mill, and usually, whenever Sony puts something off, it's because they're working to make it better. Hopefully. Binary seems to be a borderline MS fanboy (i'm not calling you a fanboy by the way, before you start flaming me), because i would be more pissed off at the points you brought up lol. No first generation HDMI, and btw the REAL defect rate for the 360 is still hovering around a whopping 50%, even on the Falcon Motherboard, which is ridiculously noisy for those of you who don't own one. I can say that this is true personally, because MY falcon elite RRoDed about a week ago, and i barely ever have time to play, so i know its not from overuse.

Anyway, people should stop bad mouthing a company that bides it's time, until it has a product worth distributing. Especially loud mouthed execs at Microsoft's XBOX district. SRSLY!

anyways back to work again!

My point is that Sony is the only company that gave us TRUE HD capabilities from the get go on all versions of their platform. Without HDMI, you'll never get full 1080p HD picture and sound. The best you could hope for is 1080i through a component connection and limited audio through optical.

I give a crap about MGS4, I like those types of games. :D. I think its got a big chance at being the killer app, you saw how the sales went up for PS consoles when GTA4 came out.. a lot of gamers bought the PS3 because they're used to seeing GTA on the PS console :D or something, I forget. But still, when MGS4 comes out I think a whole lot more people are going to buy a PS3 if they havent already.

Resistance looks *****ty, I hated the first game, but hey, I'm not a big FPS fan. Oh and I hate both Sony and Microsoft equally, but I'll more than likely go out and buy a 360 for Mass Effect! looks a good game :)

# Promises?Syrah 2008-05-28 11:36
Making promises and breaking them is something everyones guilty of. Maybe Sony has done it more then they should, but whats the end result? I think the PS3 is an awesome console. Its processing power is on par with a 360, doesnt have the gaming library... but its packed with features. In my honest opinion, I put both my consoles together, and I think if they were both released at the same time, the PS3 is just a slightly better machine (based on all its features). Just like the original Xbox was better then the PS2, the PS2 came out first, so it obtained that huge library of games to where Xbox couldnt catch up, and Xbox was clearly a superior machine. But Sony made the mistake this time, and its blu-ray will go to waste on games for the most part since multiplatform will always be made to fit DVD9.

Anyways, id basically say to this guy... Sony makes promises yes, they break them, yes. Whats the variation? look at how much Sony has added to the PS3 since its launch. Look at how much MS has added to the 360 compared to that. Sony promised a ton, gaves us less then that. MS promised basically not much, and gave not much. This is only speculation and my personal opinion. Not intended to imply anyone elses views. Sorry if I offend anyone or sound like a fanboy, I love both consoles.

For the most part I agree, but I also disagree because I don't think going with Blu-Ray was a waste, because even though multiplatform games are generally comprised to fit DVD9. There's also the benefit of better disc based add-ons, or not having to worry about cutting features out, or having to compress things. I also think having the best all around HD movie player format incorporated into my gaming system (even though I don't use it that much). Plus Blu-Ray live is also another great thing. Either way I think for the most part you hit the nail on the head but Sony has the bigger fanbase and a wide range of exclusives coming this year and Sony has already gained a strong foothold in the world wide market. Still good points mate.

# Thank youSyrah 2008-05-29 19:43
Yeah actually I didnt describe as much as I should have on the Blu-ray subject. I didnt mean to imply it was a waste, Just that it wont be used to its full potential. I did post that it would go to waste on games, but I was saying that loosely. basically on MyQJ.Net I wrote an article on it (GTA 4), just stating how alot of multiplatform games could go to waste because of DVD9 and not living up to the Blu-Rays potential. Remember, data streams from these drives and as 360s not having guaranteed HDDs, it puts developers in an awkward position on how to stream more then 8.54gb of data. You cant stream 2 discs at once. Either way, I hope MS can find a solution to this problem otherwise, weve seen our consoles limits (multiplatform) and PS3 is in for alot of extra content.
