Gamers always wants to argue about which console will be better: the Xbox 360 or the PlayStation 3. However, will the average joe's final decision come down to who can find a specific console on the shelves in stores?Microsoft continues to try and extend its lead over Sony's upcoming PS3 by increasing supplies for the Xbox 360. Microsoft Chief Financial Officer Chris Liddell said yesterday that Microsoft has once again ramped up shipments of the 360 console. Microsoft raised the bottom line of its Xbox 360 sales target range for the year ending June 30 from an earlier range of 4.5 million to 5.5 million to 5.0 million to 5.5 million units.
Liddell said Microsoft wants to build a loyal base of Xbox 360 users before Sony launches the PS3 in November. Sony, the current game machine market leader with its PlayStation 2, has said it plans to ship 6 million PS3 units by March of 2007.
"We made a conscious decision to be very aggressive on selling Xbox 360 consoles to get as much into the installed base as we possibly could ahead of Sony's launch," Liddell said. "We haven't yet reached the positive position of having supply equal demand, because to some extent we continue to see very good demand."
In January, production shortages forced Microsoft to scale back its Xbox 360 shipment estimates for the first 90 days after the console debuted in North America on November 22. The introduction of a third contract manufacturer, Celestica Inc. for the Xbox 360 helped to ease some of the supply constraints during the quarter, Liddell said.
No one yet knows how the launch of the PS3 will go, supply-wise, until the console debuts in November. But the real battle will come over the Christmas 2006 holidays when shoppers go looking for game consoles and games.
The real question is how many will they find? And if they don't find their first choice, will they simply go for whatever console is available? The battle for gaming supremacy has begun, and the war heats up this holiday season.

Its amazing how this price put so much fear in you and other fanboys alike that you must denounce it and call it a lie and an impossibility. And then simply say, SONY will lose. That alone hints at you knowing deep inside that the next generation will be dominated by the PS3. I you love the Xbox dont worry PC games wont go anywhere but why have a PC and an 360 I wonder.

sony often talk big and don't deliver, but it seems microsoft have mainly talked medium sized and are havign a hard time making good on that.
sony ought to be expensive, and we'll see when the time comes... i mean if microsoft are willing to simply throw money at xbox360 then perhaps sony will play that kind of game too.
personally i doubt it, that's why i'm saving up.

i WAS going to get one, but if the price is £300 or more, i dont care when its coming out, how many final fantasy sequels are on it, or anything.

yea PS3 will probably be more expensive than that because of blu-ray. xbox 360, they said its gonna be sold out every where but like #9 says i couldve picked one up on day 2 or even day 1 by just walking into the shops. The Rev.... i mean 'Wii' i will get because its something different but PS3 i will definately get.
P.S. xbox360 isnt THAT bad, if youm get the right games its pretty good. i just play it my mates house, waste of money getting it

Sony's business is costly and they have very low margins.
Manufacturing new hardware such as PS3 will increase their revenue COST big time. Their business is not easy and it's risky. As the Flat screens gets cheaper, their profit margins are getting tighter and costlier because of the demand for higher technology.
Here is big thing. SONY can not afford to sell PS3 cheaper than it's cost. Microsoft can. If they do, they're taking big risk by increasing their cost. It's a gamble over the company and investors will not like that. Every console could bring them LOSS of upto $300 or more. For 6 million consoles they predict in 2 quarters that would be roughly 2 BILLION LOSS from console only. There is also huge MANUFACTURING COST which could be over 1 BILLION. There is MARKETING AND ADMINISTRATION COST about 1 BILLION.. PS3 could be an entry to bankruptcy for Sony.
And what if they don't sell enough? Not only the damage will increase but also, the game developers will support less for PS3 if they don't see quantity. PS3 games are already expensive and hard to produce.
Plus game developers like to make money from other sources such as IN-GAME advertising, xbox live download and others. Not to mention Windows Vista compatibility. Urge.com, biggest music service ever which works with XBOX live, windows and other portable devices. Realtime and On-demand movie and IPTV services coming to 360 soon. HALO3 and other great titles. Tons of new accessories. What about PRICE REDUCTION. Xbox live gold could be free.
Bottom line is :
PS3 has lot to fight for with NO POSSIBLE MONEY.
It will damage the company big time.
PS3 reminds me Netscape browser. Netscape browser had 95% of the browser market and when Microsoft got in, everything reversed to other way and Netscape literally disappeared from the market and IE became standard.

Its been estimated that the ps3 will cost about $800 ($900?) to make.
If Sony sell it for $300 thats a loss of about $500 per console, to make that up in games (providing Sony gets all the money from a sale, ie the can produce games freely ... lol), every person who buys a ps3 will have to buy at least 10 games at full $50 price.
The average Joe that buys a playstation usually has at most 10 games for it, in general people who have larger libraries are usually 'into' gaming, and people who buy the playstation consoles are usually 'casual gamers'.

-So your saying that a single ps3 console sold at the price of $399 will LOSE sony $633 dollers? -Why the ***** woud it not sell SONY has monster movie studios backing blu-ray up (ps3 will be the cheapest player around a reason to get it even if ur not a gamer). And how are the ps3 games going to be expensive to develope it makes it easier for the dev team beacuse of blu-rays added space and copy right features.

-Ps3 also hasa FREE online service that is to have better service than the 360 (HD group video chat anyone) and will also have downloadable content such as games, movies, and more goodies. and when you say tons of new accessories where are u going to attach these the 360 has only 3 usb ports. and what would these accessories be i havent heard of any.
BOTTOM LINE is that 360 is disasster (IGN recently put an article on why they hate the 360)
and that the ps3 is gonna own the ***** out Microsoft with the help of:
-linux
-Cell processer
-RSX
-Blu-ray
-1080p ready
and the fact that they have the Japan market in the bag and pretty much the rest of the world too.

so remeber this,
and im not a fan boy i won ps2 and psp and even a hd tv and can afford to buy the hddvd but wont because its not a proven format ether.
