Xbox 360 - Image 1A lot of us can agree that the PlayStation 3 really needs a price cut.

Just how badly does it need one? Well, the Xbox 360 now has a base of 28 million units sold worldwide, widening its lead over the PS3 by 8 million. Its continuing success is in no small part thanks to the price cut Microsoft introduced last year.

It's getting so that even Microsoft is openly expecting Sony to have a price cut soon. Says Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg:

We absolutely expect the PS3 price drop to happen in the next couple of months. We're frankly surprised it's taken this long. ... I would expect they'd have to move on price, sooner than later, for sure.

Sony isn't budging though. Just last month, SCEE's David Reeves stated that there will be no price cuts anytime soon, "whatever you might have heard to the contrary." Recently on the PS website though, Reeves is pretty confident about how this year will treat the PS3:

The most important thing for us as a company in the very short term is for us to start making money. This is a pledge that was made last March and is something that we are still very much on target to achieve. Once we have achieved this, I think it will be a very exciting time for PlayStation. Once we have alleviated that specific pressure, we can move forward at a rate of knots.

2009 promises to be a very exciting year for PS3, with blockbuster titles such as Heavy Rain and Killzone 2 coming out, whilst we have the music and video download service becoming available towards the end of the year.

Still no price cut? Man, I really want this awesome blu-ray player with Mgs4 and LBP gaming capabilities. Looks like I'm gonna have to wait on that, and they're about to add Killzone 2 compatibility. I'm gonna try to save up for one this year.

» 28 million sold...

but 3x that in replacements

Quite happy with my PS3 and was definitely worth the money.

» WTF!?!?!?!?!

Yup, Sony blew it. When the PS3 came out MS had a 5.6 million unit lead. Since then Sony closed that gap (5.1). Then after this last holiday MS not only killed their gain, they also increased the distance.

Smooth move Sony!

» Not so fast...

Divide 20 million units by 2yrs: 10 million per year. Divide 28 million units by 3yrs: 9.34 million per year. And that would still technically put PS3 2 million units out in front ....and they didn't have to resort to a drastic price cut to do it. (Not to mention, the M$ sales include "re-purchases", accounting for their longtime 30%? failure-rate.) What's going to happen in 2009 when the PS3 sells for $300 or $250? Is Microsoft going to lower their price to $150? .....Holding the profit line worked in the HiDef war between Blu-ray and HD-DVD, and I suspect it's going to eventually work in the Game Console war, too.

» WTF!?!?!?!?!

Um...NO. You are averaging units per year. That's completly different.

Yes, on average Sony sold more units then MS BUT REALITY is what maters. In the END the totals are what they are and to date MS sold more then Sony. Yes, you can argue that the numbers are only what they are because of these past two months AND that could quickly change. But I doubt Sony will catch back up in the next two months.

It just aint gonna happen and this quater will still show MS ahead. So, this last season MATERS very much and can not be ignored.

The facts are, Sony lost ALL PLUS MORE of the lead they made for themselves.

Every time I come to this site and read an article, I always see one about MS bragging and saying stuff. Did Sony ever release their unit sales record yet?

» Tisk Tisk

Haven't Sony figured out that casual gamers is how to make profit? Nintendo has lots of evidence to prove it, Microsoft had to go to a last resort and do a major price cut, so whats sony's move now?...

by sickofitall - 2009-01-07 08:24
» sony still has it planned out

sony themselves said that their main goal is to break even with costs. Taking another price cut now will not help them get closer to that goal. And last I heard, sony did well themselves during the holidays.

» music and video download

They try themself against itunes and netflix at the same time? Well, if sony is really agressive on the pricing and the ads, they could win easily. I mean, they own the majority of the music industry and a part of the movie industry. They rent or sell their own movies and musics... They can sell it the price they want, WAY under the competition, that needs to pay sony studios before selling the same music. It,s not for everything, dah, but it's still a really big start. But please sony, also in CANADA! :'(

» Thing is....

That PS3 is selling more units per year, and without a price cut.

The only reason 360 has the lead is because it launched a year early.....PS3 is still selling on average more per year than 360, so Sony is far from being in danger.

People need to calm down, Sony knows what they are doing for the most part....

by ISOHaven - 2009-01-07 11:55
» WTF!?!?!?!?!

You missed what I said. MS increased the gap. Sony sold more then MS every year EXCEPT this year. This year MS sold more.

The price of the 360 can very well continue to hamper PS3 sales. That's why people claim Sony MUST MUST MUST lower their price.

MS completly UN-DID (new term for the day) everything Sony has done (since day one) in the last two months alone.

That is quit a feat!

Sony is just trying to keep their heads above water at this point, in these financial times they just can't afford a price cut because they would lose even more money.

by xXxZEROxXx - 2009-01-07 20:56
» ugh

Lets stop hating on two excellent consoles, and hate on some thing that really sucks, the Wii

by PS3_Geek - 2009-01-07 21:41
» Damn straight

PS3 has been tested to be one of the best Blu-Ray players out there, with all of the best speeds and blahdy blah. Its just doesn't support one or two things, which it can probably handle anyway. Last time I checked, it was also the cheapest, as well

by PS3_Geek - 2009-01-07 21:43
» >_>

Iso, are you forgetting the standard Red Ring of Death?

A good portion of sales is probably from replacement units or something

by PS3_Geek - 2009-01-07 21:45
» Exactly

Its costing Sony a lot to pump out the console, even after the removal of PS2 support.

Sony is just trying to stay financially stable, they can't afford a price cut right now

by Stealth! - 2009-01-07 22:11
» LOL!!!

Big whoop, Wii is outselling both by hardware units but their library is consisted of Shovelware and they have a low attachment rate compared to PS3 and 360. In retrospect, this Wii dominance is nothing more but being blind by the facts.

What's Sony's move? Hmm lets see, 8+ kickass exclusives which includes Uncharted 2 and God of War 3, Killzone 2, white knight chronicles Heavy Rain and iNFamous. And what does 360 has to combat this? Halo Wars? lol, what about the Wii? Yea nothing there. 2009 is looking to be PS3 dominance with another outstanding list of exclusives.

by PS34ME - 2009-01-07 23:02
» oh many, not this again

thing is stealth, i heard all this last year. 2008 was 100% going to be the year of the ps3. i mean, lots of gamers were listing all the ps3 exclusives like mgs4, lbp, r2, ffxiii (at the time), haze and more and saying "what has 360 got to combat this? only gear2 lol!" blah blah blah, heck i even did it myself, but 360 did combat it with some great exculsives of its own, though not as many as ps3, and a price cut which was perfect timing. the result is that the 360 has extended its lead over the ps3 by millions. did we underestimate the 360 or what.

so yeah, i'd like to believe the ps3 will dominate 2009, but i just don't think that's going to happen.

by Tyrant156 - 2009-01-07 23:46
» ....

LOL agreed.

by Nerveless89 - 2009-01-08 02:46
» Like it matters!

It’s obvious that Sony will come out of this "Two-Way" War on top. People don’t think of the Sony strategy, yes the console costs more, but its selling well and you get a lot of console for the money! Ya know the saying, you get what you pay for, that’s why XBOX Live is better for online, but for a monthly fee. People forget that Sony is A Year behind the XBOX 360 in sales and that the PS3 has a set 10 year product life. I mean just look at the PS2 now, its still selling, even though it was released before the XBOX. I can’t see Microsoft supporting the 360 as long as Sony with the PS3.

by sesa - 2009-01-08 02:47
» PS3 doesn't need a price cut

What they need is someone to hack the system.

I'm only being honest

» ^^^nah

replacements dont count as units sold

by PS34ME - 2009-01-08 04:19
» depends

at the rate sales are going, ps3 wont catch up to 360 until the next consoles from microsoft and sony are ready, and by then, it wouldn't really matter any more.

by ISOHaven - 2009-01-08 04:56
» WTF!?!?!?!?!

Yup, I agree. Same shlt, different year.

Plus, the Wii's attachment rate is just fine. You forget it's the Wii that has the longest #1 titles of all three as well. With software selling like that HTF do you figure the Wii has no attachment rate? I'll tell you, because you listen to the same BS lies that people like Mr. Common Douche Bag spread around.

There are now TWO consoles with great libraries for $250 and less. So unless you are MAJOR FF fan, why spend $400?

by ISOHaven - 2009-01-08 05:04
» WTF!?!?!?!?!

Exactly! People forget where the real money comes from. GAMES! Why do you think games are $60!!! A huge flat fee goes STRAIGHT to Sony and Microsoft. So, console sales are VERY important. Market share is their livelihood.

by sesa - 2009-01-08 14:17
» It's not about the price

PS3 is the best system around but the game is a bit pricey.

What I'm saying is, people will buy the system if it's get hacked no matter the price tag.

by saldude2 - 2009-01-17 07:04
» WTF!!

Are u kidding me

If that happens PS3 will become PSP

And will have no more good games comin out just like psp (i'd love that to happen)
