XBL's Greenberg: PS3 online is "yet another knockoff" |

Ó
During a Gamers' Day press event in San Francisco, Sony finally showed the public a few features that their PlayStation Network will have; video streaming from PS3 to PSP, downloading games directly to the PS3's hard drive, etc. Naturally, this drew a huge crowd, and we think it's safe to say that Microsoft engineers were probably part of this crowd and tuned in too. So, after the whole PS Network shindig, Gamespot thought it would be interesting to hear what Xbox Live's group marketing manager Aaron Greenberg had to say about Sony's PlayStation Network and its features.
The interview also touches on what Greenberg thinks this could mean for Xbox Live, now that Sony's PlayStation Network looks like it's shaping up to be a really worthy adversary of Microsoft's XBL. First, Gamespot asked Greenberg what his impressions were of Sony's online initiative, and here's the console-wars-inducing reply: "We're proud that we've created a smash hit service that has prevailed over four years by growing to 4 million members during that time. And we're flattered that we've created a service that is breeding yet another knockoff."
Tsk tsk tsk. But before fanboys start swarming our site, Greenberg pulls back a bit by saying that it's still too early to comment on what the PS Network has to offer because there are still a lot of questions left unanswered like (and we quote): "Is this a fully connected service with one identity across your entire gameplay experience? Is every game online with voice chat integration? Do they have Achievements and Gamerscore? How are they handling safety, security, hacking, viruses, and parental controls?"
In addition, Greenberg said that they welcome competition but at this point, they're sure that XBL will continue to thrive and the fact that they have a four-year AND four-million member subscription headstart keeps them confident in the continuing success of XBL. Gamespot also fished for info on the fall update, whether there are plans for a bigger hard drive, as well as backward-compatibility updates for XBL.
Oh, and here's another kicker, when asked how Microsoft will justify charging their users for games when the PlayStation Network will offer FREE downloads, here's what Greenberg had to say: "There is so much more for gamers to experience on Xbox Live and so little new news in Sony's online announcements. Heck, do they have exclusive titles that can compete with Halo 3, Gears of War, Geometry Wars, Next Splinter Cell, Halo Wars, and exclusive episodic content for Grand Theft Auto IV that you won't be playing on the PS3?"
Also, Gamespot prods Greenberg on whether there are plans for integrating Web browsing functionality into XBL since the PlayStation Network will have this and Nintendo seems to be moving in the same direction with the Wii. The interview tackles a whole lot more, so if you're interested in reading all about it (as we know you guys are), simply click on the read link below to see the full interview. We'll keep you posted for more.

psp has been online for years, and it stinks.
nintendo has the biggest market with the DS since not only is it free but it was the fastest growing compared to xbox live on both the original and 360 service.
playstation 2 stunk online, the psp stunk,so i'm sure the 3rd time is the charm.

The fact is, XBOX LIVE is currently dominating. You can accept it or not. When the PS3 network is INTRODUCED thats when you can actally talk. Right now you have nothing to go by. Like all other Sony promises- who knows if it'll end up being scraped.

As for the knockoff comment, I had forgotten how MS had invented online gaming... although I will admit LIVE is pretty good.
And I guess Gear of War online 8 vs 8 (or is it 4v4?)is suppossed to be good compared to Resistance 20 vs 20... riiiiiiiiiiiiig ht.
FREE and good works for me Sony, do your thang.

Soooo... this is a different company that ISN'T the one that is trying to make Vista look and feel like MacOS X? Or maybe it's the company that is NOT making Internet Explorer 7 with 'all the tabs and toys' of Mozilla's Firefox?
More 'game specifically': Has anyone overlapped the button layout for the PS2 controller, and the X360 controller? *gasp!* SHOCKING!!! Even better yet, now they're offering an HD-DVD movie 'addon' to their console after b1tching about it being 'not needed'.
Ladies and Gentlemen, the Pot is indeed calling the Kettle black- er... 'Cast-Iron American'. HA!

Client Servers have been around since games were plyable over a network and the technology is over a decade old.
The only thing unique to Xbox Live is Achievements.
Also as far as Sony and Gamespy are concerned, it was said they were working together for the PS3 online network.
Meaning Developers wont have to maintain their own servers because Gamespy would be able to create and maintain it for them.
Dont underestimate free services from gamespy. They make more profit then Xbox live from the people they charge "nothing" to because all you have to deal with is little advertisements.
So saying that the PS3 Online Network is a knock off of Xbox live is such a Microsoft way of trying to make it seem they were first.
Xbox Live gets less then 1/10th the traffic the Gamespy network gets. They dont even come close to how much is downloaded off Fileplanet in a single day. Since Gamespy merged with IGN, they will continue to be the largest online network in existence.
Its funny for a major PC software company to exclude the PC out of every claim they make for the Xbox360.
Talk about knock offs, they only offer 1080p support because the PS3 does. They will only offer Browser Support because the PS3 does.
Gears of war is still the better game even with less players. LOL
Claim cant be made since neither game is in the hands of gamers. With more players, your allowed to make the game faster pace, and more wide open maps for more options.
With less players you have to limit the size of your map or else people will get bored.
You have to limit the amount of complexity in your gametypes or else it will take too long to get multiple objectives dont to win the round.
take Battlefield 2142 for example. In order to take down whatever those huge ships are called, you must first capture several key attack points on the map. Then you must attack the ship directly. If the game ever came out on the Xbox360 or PS3 with fewer then 32 player capabilities, the maps would have to be make smaller because on the PC, even with 32 players in one server, the game doesnt progress as fast as you may think, you need at least 40 people in one server to be able to have the ability to capture and hold key positions on the map and have enough people left to make strikes against the points the enemy has control over.
CoD2 for the Xbox360 is a horrible counterpart to the PC version. the maps are a fraction of the size thats available on the PC version because of the fact that theres less people that can play at one time.
You wanna talk splinter cell then consider this. Double Agent is a piss poor example of a Splinter Cell game. It looks no better in terms of graphics from Chaos Theory and from the Videos it doesn't seem to offer any extra gameplay elements. So it is very undeserving to call this game next-gen. MGS4 blows Double Agent away in every category.

There's a fanboy statement if I ever heard one...
some guy
More players doesnt mean better gameplay
Indeed. But I fail to see how 4v4 is something to brag about. Can you? Keep in mind that RFOM 20v20 is the maximum, you can go lower.

People actually care about those? I thought they had no purpose whatsoever?
LIVE is a great platform, but if SOny gets even close to it and its free, then we'll see a free version of LIVE in 2 years, my prediction.
And there's what? 3 million LIVE 360 owners? Sony we'll catch up it that area in no time.

The xbox cost them money, thye hope to make money this gen. If, by some chance the 360 was a huge failure, they would definitely hesistate to blow more money.
But you are right, they can afford to screw up many more times.
