Word on the street: Rockstar goes exclusive for Sony after GTA IV? |

Whispers have been going around the backstreets and alleyways of the Internet for the past few weeks about the company famous for their GTA series. Rumors, rumors, rumors. It's all just hearsay until Rockstar officially announces anything. The latest word on the street though is that Rockstar might actually be heading off into a Sony exclusivity regiment after the release GTA IV (for the PS3 and Xbox 360).
As pointed out by N4G, in a recent podcast from CheatCC, an interesting point of discussion follows up on previous reports of exclusivity deals surrounding Rockstar. Transitioning from talking about their woes of buying Microsoft Points, the hosts in the podcast talk of (somewhere along the 51:10 mark) upcoming games in Rockstar's lineup.
"Apparently, Rockstar is going to be PS3-exclusive from now on," says the female host. "So, I remember you guys were looking for those exclusive games, so you might just get them... They mentioned Grand Theft Auto... which we all know is going to both [360 and PS3]. But I guess future titles are just going to be PS3..."
It sounds more like speculation of what Rockstar's future direction will be, and it's quite reasonable too, especially considering that Rockstar has already announced a new PS3 exclusive franchise. But then again, if Rockstar does go Sony-exclusive, then this goes against the confirmation of 360-exclusive episodic content for GTA IV, in a sense, doesn't it? So for now, we tag this under both Rumor and Opinions & Analysis.
What's your take on it though? What are the chances of Rockstar going exclusive for Sony, post-GTA4? Maybe Captain Planet in our comments section has something to say about it... given, of course, that someone out there would summon him first.

Microsoft got their episodes although the schedule for them are now all scrambled cause of GTAIV's...
there are even talks of exclusives episodes too for the PS3 that R* and Sony are talking about which depends on how the install base will be after the holiday period up to the initial GTAIV launch... and said episodes could follow several months after that... and ofcourse they are also busy making future exclusive games for the PS3.

I'm getting a ps3 for sure. Straight after a £100 price cut announcement , it should happen here in europe soon. I also own an xbox360 and i love to play gears of war online so i will still keep my 360 but ps3 is better and all it need now is a price cut of at least £100.

one still unnamed PS3 exclusive but there was an article (actually several saying the same thing) which says that La Noire will be a PS3 exclusive but that will be separate from the still unnamed PS3 future exclusive...
i'll try to look for the link so you can judge the authenticity of the report for yourself... for me it doesn't really matter which games or how many... what i find to be good news for Sony fans is the relationship between R* and Sony what with the exclusive episodes for the 360 and R* not sending a video to Sony in the recently concluded E3 to be part of Sony's presentation... I'm just saying that knowing that the relationship is infact healthy and there is a rich future of the two working together is good news for PS3 gamers.

It could be in the realm of possibility, remember R* wanted GTA4 to be PS3 exclusive but they said they had difficulties communicating with Kutaragi. So who knows, until it's officially announced it's still just a rumor and we'll treat it as such.

what strikes me as odd there has been a lot of "speculation between M$ and Rockstar". After the announcement of GTA IV they quickly announce La Noir is a PS3 game, then an exclusive franchise is in the works, and now it seems that even Red Revolver II might become an exclusive. Something is cooking between RS and SONY, and I think that maybe the whole rumor thing about GTA IV being delayed because of the 360 might be in fact be true! Yet Bully is coming to the Wii and the 360, so the rumor thing might very well be that, just a rumor. Why is this posted now? This is old news I posted on one of the links a few hours ago!

While Rockstar may be developing a few titles for the PS3 and only the PS3, to assume that Rockstar will become a Sony exclusive company from here out has got to be the dumbest thing I've ever heard...until I read the posts here that is.
The ONLY way that will happen is if Sony buys Rockstar outright. There is no way any neutral, third party developer will cut out 75% of the gaming base (between Nintendo and MS) and lose all that revenue. I'm not ruling out the type of incredible stupidity that might be the CEO of R*, but it takes an incredibly blind fanboy to even think that a company this big would shoot itself in the foot (financially speaking).

That's why it's soooo secret! Sony wants PS3 fans to get excited about this upcoming franchise, about rumble that may never come, and about a 2008 game linup because 2007's games pretty much suck.
If I somehow did make the mistake of getting a PS3, I would either sell it on ebay or return it if I could! Screw waiting and hoping for over a year for games! When I got my PS2 in 2000 I only had to wait 6 months to get some badass games for it and the other systems had the inferior games.
I think the fact sony and Rockstar are so quiet on this new secret franchise says something. They didn't even say what type of game it would be!

You figure microsoft will charge $10 for each series ($30 for the 3 episodes) and multiply that by what... 5 million (figure half of the user base wants this game) and you get $150 million. Microsoft definitely did calculations to see how much they could offer and still turn a profit.

If, when the PS2 sold over 100mil consoles last gen, they didn't go exclusive with Sony, what the hell would make them with their slow crawling 4 mil people install base? Microsoft paid for the exclusive rights to the content only! Rockstar gets the downloaded game sales revenue, just like everyone else who offers content for download.

2. They ship them to retailers and SELL THEM to the retailers.
3. The retailers MARK UP THE PRICE, and SELL THEM for their OWN profit.

even someone like me isn't totally against ever getting a PS3, but if that crazy occurance was to happen, sony would need to do the following:
1. Put far more effort into quality 1st party games, reminiscent of the PS1 and PS2 days.
2. Introduce an impressive permanent price cut, maybe like $450 for the new 80gb model if they are getting rid of the 60gb model. No "value packs" or "starter packs" that just add crap you might not want with trivial discounts. The increased sales from this will increase 3rd party software support.
3. Fire dumbasses like peter dille and phil harrison, who are horrible at PR and only lie to make playstation seem better. I like the truth, even if it isn't horribly optimistic, I have far more respect for companies that are honest and don't unfairly attack the competition.
4. Get rumble into controllers and quit stalling!
5. Get some decent firmware features like the XBOX 360 had forever, like ingame music playing and XMB access.
6. Make the PS3's Linux useful by unlocking the GPU, or having some kind of restricted access to it.
Yeah, I don't think I will ever be getting a PS3, because I don't think sony will ever change. They're too concerned with blu ray, their movie studio, and their electronics divisions.
I think many PS3 owners may be frustrated with the lack of quality titles, or waiting forever for them and get a 360 instead. It is cheaper, has the best warranty, and the quality will only get better with the new chips coming this fall.

i hope its true, and the 360-exclusive episodic content is part of the GTA IV, so R* Probably means that after Manhunt 2, Table Tennis Wii, GTA IV and the episodic content , it will go Sony Exclusive
and for the guy that said GTA V wont be out till 2011, thats probably true, but there will probably be another 1 or 2 GTAs before that, maybe Vice City and San Andreas again, or hopefully a GTA with Detroit, Toronto and a.. Buffalo

What *****ing store would spend money to BUY another console if MS is fixing them for FREE. MS just REFURBISHES THE CONSOLES or repairs them, very rarely will they give them a new one, and regardless, the STORE DOES NOT PAY FOR BROKEN SYSTEMS, MS REPLACES THEM FREE OF CHARGE.
Second, you don't get "double the sales" in some cases, it doesn't work like that clown. Very few people (excluding you and your circle of "friends" if you really have them), would sit there and go, "alright well I can wait a week and get it fixed for free, or I can spend a weeks paycheck (and thats like an average americans paycheck, not the *****ty checks teenagers get) on a new system." Yea, that makes sense. Idiot.

Lol, well, read a lot of comments of yours and I never though I would ever say this, but for once, I completely agree with you Mr. Common Sense... Rare as that may be, all the points you made are absolutely valid, and some of them are reasons why I have yet to buy EITHER console... Both Consoles (I dont count the Wii as a console... It's a novelty...) have their weaknesses, for Sony its so far underwhelming first party games, whereas for MS its a relatively underwhelming third party games. What I like is that Sony is actually doing something about it by releasing some major first-party games throughout this year and next, and continuing to try and snatch and keep exclusives, wheras MS is slowly losing their third parties even further. I'm gonna wait till sometime next year to get a console, (Huge RPG fan, so even though I'm currently favouring the PS3, if Fable 2 is anywhere near amazing... It could definitely sway my decision) and I hope that by that time at least some of your 6 points come true, because that would definitely make my decision a lot easier...
