Wolfenstein pulled out from Germany for Swastika

Wolfenstein (PC, PS3, and Xbox 360) is not welcome in Germany. Because of the presence of the Nazi symbol, the game has been consequently denied in the said country. In case you weren't aware, the Swastika and other Nazi-related symbols are forbidden from within games in the country.

Developer Raven Software and publisher Activision did try to preempt this by removing all such symbols from the German version, in consideration of such sensitivities in the country, but still the recall was given the green light as of this week. It would appear that the clean-up was not thorough enough, and in fact, there were still some signs that evaded the erasure, caught on cam, such as the one pictured below.

As to what's gonna happen next for the German version of the FPS, we'll have to wait until Activision Blizzard decides how they want to deal with this.

» just saying

but you guys know that the 1st peepz to use the so-called" swastika" are Buddhists right? and more so Buddha himself

if you go to just about ANY statue of buddha, you should see it somewhere in his robes or something, lest im getting buddha mixed up with another buddhist god or something

» Actually...

If you watch Angels and Demons Robert Langdon is actually doing a speaking about ancient symbols and one of which is the Swastika, it's been used all over the globe in ancient cultures.

» You Forgot!!!

That so called country is still butt hurt for getting its ass kicked some 60 years ago. Ive been there its true like in the movie euro trip its like they try to act like WWII never happened and yes the Swastika is a sign for peace but Hitler totally butt*****ed its reputation.

by Master Chef - 2009-09-22 21:51
» um no

I've been there as well, I think you misinterpreted the general feeling among the people of Germany. They're not "butt hurt" that they lost, they're mostly deeply ashamed of letting Hitler take power and of the Holocaust. They definitely take the "no Nazi imagery" thing way too far, but I can understand it.

» opression

they're merely replacing one form of harsh oppression with another

just like after WWI, they are letting their emotions get the better of them and are making silly, stupid decisions

» Wrong.

I'm German myself, and live in Germany. We aren't "butthurt", we simply hate Hitler more than anyone else in the world. Get educated...

First of all, we were in a severe depression before Hitler was elected. He told our people that he would restore Germany to glory (what people don't want that for their nation in a time of crisis?), and being the sophisticated speaker that he was, we believed him. Soon after he enacted laws that made him unable to be expired from his position and declared himself basically, a king. From there he started killing our people and trying to take over the world for HIS own gain, not for the people of Germany. The nazi party was not supported by true Germans, and we were his first victims. We didn't get our ass kicked, in fact, we were liberated by the Americans.

Also the swastika was originally used as a sign of good luck (NOT peace, like you think), protection, the changing of the seasons (hence the four quadrants), and the materialization of life.

You need to realize that the reason why we have such laws about anything to do with Nazism is so we don't have to be reminded of the oppression and fear we all felt in our country's darkest hour. Much like people in Iraq today don't want to see Sadam's face all over the city anymore, they tear it down. The wound isn't that old. Most Germans my age lost grandfathers to Hitler's fanatical reign. If someone who murdered most of your relatives and friends had a symbol associated with their terror you probably wouldn't want to see it on a daily basis either.

» lol

It drives German people crazy - it's their cryptonite...

by Orlyeh - 2009-09-23 05:03
» CORRECT

I would totally enact laws prohibiting the use of my family's murderer's name or his image! I would make it AN OFFENSE to paint a picture of his face and I would BAN everything and anything with MERELY A HINT OF IT.

Also, I laugh heartily at the thought of "true Germans" not being part of the Nazi party. Hitler and his cronies had the bulk of Germany's population under their spell regardless of what your books and teachers tell you. Whether it was willful membership or propaganda-induced blindness, Germany was pretty united and determined in starting and winning WWII.

Sublime85, don't even try to explain it to intolerant fools. They will never understand our true feelings. It's like fighting against Windmills.

@Orlyeh: Yeah, like you know better what actually happened in Germany, you of course know better than any German....

I could try to explain how Americans robbed the land from the Indians and killed nearly all their people, but then again, that's your history, so you probably understand that better. Same situation.

» yeah but

they shouldnt have allowed their grandaddy's get tricked by Hitler's monkey a**

lol but come on man, just because of a swastika?? why dont you just censor it?

» It's different in buddhism...

It's not tilted in buddhism, hitler just based it on the chinese symbol and gave it it's name.

» YOU both are right

just a little background on me before you flame me.... I am german and american, much of germany was very united during the time of WWII but as sublime said, they were in a time of crisis before that is why they elected hitler. Both nations America and Germany have done terrible things because the majority believed it was the right thing to do at the time. The germans saw the Jew's doing very well for themselves because of their work ethics and thought that they must be the reason that they are suffering so much thus hitler used them as a scapegoat and uniting the majority.

While for the Americans, we believed it was our destiny to take over the North american continent because of all of the struggles we had been through to survive in the new world, they believed that It was god's will for Them to take over. -------- (manifest destiny) . We americans killed and stole so much land from the natives that it was an absolute genocide.

Both nations were flawed, as every nation has their darkest hours. My personal opinion on the the game being taken out of germany is that it is very ignorant, The only way to make sure that the holocaust or any terrible event never happens again is to remeber it and be reminded of it. Those who fail to know their past are doomed to repeat it - i think that isnt exactly how the quote goes but you guys get the idea.

PS don't flame me for grammar and i didn't mean to be offensive to anyone

» not being German

It's because I'm NOT a German that I know what happened. Germany and Japan are so ashamed at what THEY DID during World War 2, that they won't even teach to their children what really happened.

Do you think that the average Japanese young adult is taught about what happened in Nanking? Are they taught about the CRAZY HUMAN EXPERIMENTS conducted by the Japanese' Unit 731 (Wikipedia it and prepare to vomit) on prisoners of war and Chinese civilians? How about the BATAAN DEATH MARCH in the Philippines?

You're right, I would know better than any German. Many of my family were sent to work camps and concentration camps. Some never made it out. Many of my family hid Jews from various parts of Europe.

The Germans and Japanese and Americans and everyone alike don't teach what they did to those who didn't deserve it.

In the US, however, we don't outlaw the use of symbols and phrases and actions because we're ashamed of them and are oppressing people by not allowing their use.

You are so proud of a country that has a ridiculous election system, allows guns in every home, where people die cause they got no health insurance and let the self declared "War-President" present you in a most unfortunate way in front of the world for two legislativ perdiods... Well... before calling my or other countries pathetic, take a critical look at your own country.

All of the stuff you mentioned would be stuff conservatives support and I absolutely hate conservatives. But, they exist in all countries, just because they got their way here doesn't mean they cant get their way in other countries too. The only country that is really better then America is the UK, though they have a horrid video game rating system similar to Germany.
